Lots change from expansion to expansion or major patch to major patch. Rotations, flying, tradeskills, reputation grinds, etc. However, when going from an expansion, you have been doing end content for the last several months, to a brand new expansion there are several things you can do to get you ready for that rather you have tested out on beta or not.
This is a quick little guide if you need help on what things you should consider doing to prepare for the launch of a major patch or expansion.
It's always good to start a new expansion or major patch with as clean of a slate as possible.
You by no means are required to do any of these things to prepare for any new expansions or patches, however, I have found that doing these things have made going into the new content more fluid and less issues/down time.
If you do something to prepare for an expansion or major patch, which you think could help others, let us know down in the comments down below!
Clean House
Over the course of the expansion, which runs several years, we gather a lot of junk and resources that take up a lot of room. So start cleaning house.
TIP:
If you don't have a
bank character(s)
set up already, to handle specific mats and items. Assign each of your characters specific mats (e.g., tailor may be cloth, enchanter may be shards, dust, and crystals, etc.) . This will then allow you to compile your mats into specific locations so you know how much you have and where they are located.
Clean out your bags
Start by going through each of your characters bags and getting rid of anything that is no longer of any use.
Grey items
Items that have been made useless that you do not want around for nostalgia reasons. Things like extra
神器研究纲要:第1-6卷
or
巨魔调和剂
.
Things you no longer need because you have completed the content or wish not to revisit it. Items like left over
重型强化护甲附魔
Old gear. This is gear that is no longer needed to equipping or transmog.
Go through pots and foods, and get rid of any that are not useful for your level, and those you plan to use for alts send to a bank character to hold onto them.
Clean out your banks
Go through your bank and void storage for anything that you no longer need. If you have bank alts with guild banks you may want to clean out old stuff as well. Somethings you can do to help clear out your bank alt:
Use extra mats to stock up on
故往神器 I
,
故往神器 II
,
故往神器 III
,
故往神器 IV
,
故往神器 V
for future leveling characters.
Mats in expansions you don't plan on leveling through limit to 2 stacks. This will be about 400 for most things.
Limit to a stack of currencies you don't need, and get rid of old currencies you have bought everything you wanted with it. Good chance nothing more is going to be added that uses that currency.
Get rid of any tabards you can repurchase or don't need for special equips.
What to do with stuff
If you are wanting to save an item that is not unique and soulbound consider putting it in your
void storage
to save space for things you access often.
Mats and resources you will want to compile in one location. So send any mats or resources to your assigned character(s).
Mats and other useful items may be worth something in the Auction House. Consider posting things there to make some extra gold for the new expansion. Otherwise find you local neighborhood merchant and pawn the junk off on them for a few coins.
Level Up
Now that you have all your bags and banks cleaned consider leveling up anything left to level up.
Tradeskills
Use the mats you have to update any lingering tradeskills to be ready to take on the next expansion. Even though tradeskills are changing how they are leveled in BFA. Old items will still be beneficial for leveling alts in Shadownlands with the use of
故往神器 I
,
故往神器 II
,
故往神器 III
,
故往神器 IV
,
故往神器 V
.
Battle pets
If you do pet battles there are several things you can do to prepare for the upcoming expansion. You can start by checking out what new pets will be released.
Check out what are good lineups for the next expansion.
Get as many of your battle pets ready to go by leveling them.
Check out the new achievements for pet battles.
Consider selling off any unneeded duplicates you have that can help you earn gold and clear room for new pets.
Alts
If you find yourself a bit bored you can level some new alts. If you already have done that, consider working on your alts a bit more. Each expansion does have a bit of end game stuff that alts tend to skip through cause our mains have done it.
TIP:
If you feel like your in a rut and want to try something new consider starting a new character on a new realm. If you tend to play one faction; try the other.
Level up their professions if you haven't already.
Work on some rep for reps that have things that are not Account wide.
Get a good ilvl of gear to prepare for going into the next expansion.
Do things that are specific to the expansion that you may not go back and do.
Use them to make a bit of extra gold. For the last 3 expansion (WoD, Legion, and BFA) we have tables with missions that reward gold.
With Allied Races maybe consider leveling a few for the heritage armor. Can use my
Leveling Up Allied Races for Heritage Armor
if you need some help to get started.
Finish Up
As an expansion or patch comes to an end there may be things that you will want to finish up so that you either don't miss out on them, or you don't have to return to old content to complete later on.
Clean out your quest log
We still have a limit to how many quests we can have in our log at any given time. Come end of expansions you have all kinds of trade skill, faction, or other quests hanging out in your log. Now's a good time to either turn in, complete, or abandon those quests. This will make sure that you don't waste time in the new expansion trying to figure out which ones to get rid of when you quest log in full.
This will also help clean out your bank of any items you are holding onto to complete quests like
其拉命令腕轮
or
超维度幽灵显形器
Reputations
In many expansion you are given ways to get exalted with reputations for that expansion. Now would be a good time to start using anything you can put towards those reputations. Things like
黑曜石作战念珠
or
大型瓦拉加尔徽章
.
Exalted reps means you can get any tabards, mounts, recipes, or battle pets from that faction if you so choose to do so in the future.
TIP:
With a lot of the newer Heritage Armor sets you are needing to have old rep. Right now it's for the core playable races, but this may change in the future.
Collection
If there are any collections you are working on now is a good time to get those knocked out as well. Collections could be:
Mounts
Battle Pets
Armor
Achievements
As we move to a new expansion many things of those older expansion become harder or more difficult to do as compared to when the content is current. Not to mention some mounts, achievements, etc. will be removed, and you won't be able to get them when the new expansion (or prepatch) drops.
Stock Up
With a new expansion / patch comes new adventure. Along with new armor, enchants, leveling up tradeskill, and new pet and mounts. So it's a good idea to maybe start gathering items you may find useful in the upcoming expansion / patch
Gold
If you are not spending all your gold on tokens. Consider setting some aside for up coming things you may need to buy.
Training
Gear from the AH
Mats from the AH
New Mounts or Battle Pets
It's always a good idea to have a stash of gold set aside for a rainy day.
Useful Items
As the new expansion opens a lot of things happen -- mainly we start from scratch in the new adventure. We don't have flying, or tons of mats available on the AH for reasonable prices, and we aren't the most powerful thing around. So stocking up on a few things to help get your through at the start.
地精滑翔器工具包
The best Healing Potion from the last expansion (e.g.,
古代治疗药水
)
The best stat food from the last expansion
TIP:
If you are planning on leveling any Allied Races you may want to hold onto consumables that would help leveling them. Check out my guide
Leveling Up Allied Races for Heritage Armor
for some of those useful items.
Special Currency Items
Use up the currency that is current in the expansion before the prepatch drops. Get the stuff you need/want from using that currency because there is a good chance some of that may change.
This happens a lot with PvP currency, which often times is converted into gold, or like
闪亮的宠物符咒
, which won't be able to buy a lot of things they currently can. Using these up will help clear out your bank, and help with finishing up your collections.
User Interface
To help prevent any issues with performance in the upcoming expansion you'll also want to clean out your UI.
Before starting do the following to save you a lot of heartache later:
Backup your stuff. You can find out how to do this with the
Backing up Important WoW Data and You!
.
Take a screenshot of how your UI is set up.
If you want to go even further write down what addons you are using.
TIP:
Instead of writing down all the addons you can make a quick batch file if you are using Windows. dir /b "C:\World of Warcraft\_retail_\Interface\addons" > %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\AddonList.txt Just change the location of the World of Warcraft to where you have it installed if it's not installed to the default location.
Unused/Outdated Addons
If an addon isn't something you use anymore, or it hasn't been updated for a very long while you may want to remove it. This will help prevent with unused addons using memory as well as addons that haven't been updated causing error or issues with the game. However, if the addon is something you use and you just haven't update -- update it!
This is where the Twitch App or the Minion comes in really handy. I have broken down
AddOns: How to Install and Maintain
them in my guide.
Macros
If you use macros you will also want to clean these up. With each expansion things change. So these should be updated, as well, to work with your rotation or whatever you use your macros for. If you don't need it anymore delete it. Find out more about macros in the
Macro Guide
.
UI Rest
To help prevent any issues from the start - you may just want to do a complete
UI RESET
. This will pretty much make your settings be the same as if you had done a fresh install. You will need to redo your addon settings as well as many things in your systems and interface tabs. This will clear out your cache, interface, and WTF folders.
Check Out What's New
Some people do not mine spoilers of what's to come in the new prepatch or expansion. So there are several things you can do to see what to expect and what's to come.
Beta/PTR
If you have access to the Beta give it a try. Most people should have access to the PTR when it is up. Both of these are a great way to get your hands on the newest content that is coming out.
Be warned though -- that things can change between Beta/PTR and released. Blizzard will remove cutscenes, NPC may be replaced with
普莱斯霍德队长
, items, NPCs, and mobs may not be there complete and final form (drops, appearance, speech, etc.) while in beta/PTR. Still trying our the Beta/PTR is still a good way to get a pretty good idea of what's to come.
TIP:
For more information and help with PTR check out Blizzard's
Public Test Realm
article.
YouTube
Check out some of the YouTube creators that focus a lot on World of Warcraft content, and things that are coming out. Some cover everything, some hit on specific aspects of the game, some are a constant stream of news, and some are every once and awhile. Whatever you are looking for there is someone covering it! You just need to search for World of Warcraft in the YouTube search.
Here's a quick list of some to start with:
Taliesin & Evitel
Hazelnutty
Bellular
MrGM
SoulSoBreezy
World of Warcraft Official Channel
Resources
Another good source of what's to come is from Blue themselves or from fan sites. If you are looking for news directly from Blue check out these place:
Blizzard News
Blizzard Posts on WoW Forums
World of Warcraft Twitter
For some good fan sites to check out -- here's a start:
Wowhead
MMO-Champions
Warcraft Pets
In Closing
So these are a few things to do before the launch of a prepatches, expansions, or major patches to get prepared for what's to come.

Even though you would think the majority of this would be common practice for anyone thats gone though the launch headaches by now, its nice to have a quick overview like this. Nice work
