Kael’thas Sunstrider
, also known as Kael, was a blood elf mage and the last prince of Quel’Thalas.
Once determined to bring new hope to his people after the destruction of the Sunwell, he eventually betrayed the sin’dorei and the Alliance to partner with the Burning Legion and Kil’jaeden himself.
Early Life
As it is with most high elves, Kael’thas had been in contact with magic quite early. Over the course of his early life he became quite the promising mage which led him to visit the magical city of Dalaran to further his magical studies.
He quickly climbed up the ladder within the Kirin Tor and eventually became a member of the Council of Six, a group of the most knowledgeable mages of Azeroth who governed the city of Dalaran.
As the only high elf member of the Council of Six, Kael’s societal appearance within the Kirin Tor and Dalaran had always awoken interest among the locals, and that also included an aspiring human mage called
Jaina Proudmoore
.
Both met multiple times, and Kael’thas fell in love with young Jaina. Despite an enormous age difference and his status as a high elf prince, he tried to pursue a relationship with the Kul’tiran teenager; the item
Prince Kael'thas Sunstrider's Gold Coin
provides players who happen to fish this coin from the Dalaran fountain a look into Kael’s thoughts:
Prince Kael'thas Sunstrider's Gold Coin
That young apprentice Jaina is quite attractive for a human. I hope she recognizes my elegance and power.
Jaina, however, fell in love with a young man called
Arthas Menethil
. The Prince of Lordaeron and Jaina had known each other since they were children, and they eventually found love while Arthas was educating himself in magical matters in Dalaran.
In a private moment between the two, Kael’thas entered their room and found out about their secret romance. Kael, filled with jealousy, now knew why Jaina wouldn’t return his affection. The high elf prince confronted them about their relationship and made clear that he despises Arthas for keeping a liaison private with such a wonderful woman.
Left with a broken heart, Kael’thas focussed on his role within the Council of Six. At that time,
Kel’Thuzad
, once prominent member of the council, had been displaced from Dalaran due to his involvement with necromancy.
Warcraft III
The Fall of Quel’Thalas
During the original Warcraft III campaign, Arthas and his troops managed to kill Kel’Thuzad, who had received orders by the Lich King himself to infest Lordaeron with the plague. After Arthas obtained his sword Frostmourne and slew Mal’Ganis with it, the Lich King started to take over the young prince. What followed may now be known as the most famous regicide in Warcraft history.
In the following story, the Lich King planned to summon Archimonde, one of the most powerful members of the Burning Legion, who eventually was going to destroy Dalaran. For that the Lich King needed his loyal servant Kel’Thuzad, and thus he ordered Arthas to resurrect the necromancer who once died to the blade of the prince of Lordaeron.
Enormous powers were needed to resurrect the dangerous necromancer; in fact, only the Sunwell based in Quel’Thalas offered such powerful magic to complete such a ritual. Thanks to the Key of the Three Moons, a mystical item combined through three mooncrystals, Arthas was able to enter enemy territory and eventually laid siege to the homeland of the high elves.
Kael’s father Anasterian Sunstrider, King of Quel’Thalas, tried to fight off Arthas but failed, and with him the majority of the high elves either died in the battle against the Scourge or were resurrected as slaves of the Lich King, such as Sylvanas Windrunner.
After this overwhelming victory, Arthas defiled the sunwell and resurrected Kel'Thuzad in the process. Kael’thas receives the horrible news about the downfall through Jaina whilst in Dalaran:
Arthas: Rise of the Lich King, Chapter 20
Jaina thought she might be sick.
She had been here in Dalaran when word had come, from a handful of survivors who had managed to escape, about what had happened to Quel’Thalas.
So too had been the quel’dorei prince. She had never seen Kael’thas so—so angry, so shattered, so raw. She had gone to him, words of compassion and comfort on her lips, but he whirled and gazed at her with such a look of fury that she instinctively drew back.
“Say nothing,”
Kael had snarled. His fists clenched; she could see, to her shock, that he was barely restraining himself from physically harming her.
“Foolish girl. This is the monster you would take to your bed?”
Jaina blinked, stunned at the crudeness of the words coming from one so cultured.
“I—” But he was not interested in hearing anything she had to say.
“Arthas is a butcher! He has slaughtered thousands of innocent people! There is so much blood on his hands that a whole ocean could never wash them clean. And you loved him? Chose him over me?”
His voice, normally so mellifluous and controlled, cracked on the last word. Jaina felt quick tears come to her eyes as she suddenly understood. He was attacking her because he could not attack his real enemy. He felt helpless, impotent, and was striking out at the nearest target—at her, Jaina Proudmoore, whose love he had wanted and failed to win.
“Oh…Kael’thas,” she said softly,
“he has done…terrible things,” she began. “What your people have suffered—” “
You know nothing of suffering!” he cried.
“You are a child, with a child’s mind and a child’s heart. A heart that you would give to that—that—he slaughtered them, Jaina. And then he raised their corpses!”
Jaina stared at him mutely, his words having no sting now that she knew the reason for them.
“He murdered my father, Jaina, just as he murdered his own. I—I should have been there.”
“To die with him? With the rest of your people? What good would throwing your life away do for—”
No sooner had the words left her lips than she realized that it was the wrong thing to say.
Kael’thas tensed and cut her off sharply. “I could have stopped him. I should have.” He straightened, and coldness suddenly chased away the fire in him. He bowed low, exaggeratedly.
“I will be departing Dalaran as soon as possible. There is nothing for me here.”
Jaina winced at the emptiness, the resignation in his voice. “I was a fool of the greatest order to ever think any of you humans could aid me. I will leave this place of doddering old magi and ambitious young ones. None of you can help. My people need me to lead now that my father—”
He fell silent and swallowed hard. “I must go to them. To what pathetically few remain. To those who have endured, rebirthed by the blood of those who now serve your beloved.
After Kael’thas had visited his shattered homeland, and to honor the fallen, he renamed his people blood elves and decided to join the Alliance resistance, a group that formed after the Reign of Chaos.
Together with the mages Astalor and Rommath he also destroyed the sunwell to prevent further corruption. For that, the three elves used the three mooncrystals which once sealed Quel’Thalas, and after the ritual, Kael’thas decided to keep these now corrupted and green-glowing artifacts, which have from there on been named Verdant Spheres, around him forever and always.
When looking at Kael’s character development in the world of Azeroth, telling the story about the Fall of Quel’Thalas and the corruption of the sunwell is essential. These events meant the rejection of his love, the death of his father, the downfall of the majority of his people, the loss of the magical life source of the high elves, and eventually the rise of his arch enemy.
Kael’thas and Illidan’s Task
After Kael’thas and his troops left Dalaran, they established outposts in Silverpine Forest to fight off the undead.
While looking for refuge due to the overwhelming amounts of Scourge attackers, Kael met
Tyrande Whisperwind
and
Maiev Shadowsong
. They had been on the hunt for
Illidan Stormrage
, who had betrayed the night elves once again during the Third War.
Kael and Maiev eventually tracked down Illidan while he tried to perform a ritual within the ruins of Dalaran. With the Eye of Sargeras, a mystical artifact, Kil’Jaeden ordered him to destroy the Frozen Throne because the Lich King disobeyed his master; but the two elves intervened at the right time.
However, Illidan made clear that his plans involved their common enemy, the Scourge.
Malfurion Stormrage
, who joined the scene, still wanted his twin brother dead, not last because he thought that Illidan had been responsible for his beloved Tyrande’s death - earlier in the story, she fell into a river after defending a bridge so that Kael’thas and Maiev could escape the threat of the Scourge. Later on, Maiev told Malfurion that she had died - a lie to justify her hatred and bloodthirst towards Illidan.
Kael’thas clears up the confusion by telling Malfurion that despite Maiev’s version of the story, Tyrande could very well still be alive. After Illidan and Malfurion teamed up to find their love Tyrande, the demon hunter decided to leave the world of Azeroth. Afraid of Kil’Jaeden and his punishment for not fulfilling the order to destroy the Frozen Throne, Illidan fled to Outland, once homeland of the orcs called Draenor.
Alliance Remnants
Left behind with no other options, Kael’thas joined the remaining Alliance forces.
Their commander, Grand Marshal Garithos, hated everything that wasn’t human, and that didn’t exclude Kael’thas and the blood elves. That is why Garithos didn’t want them to fight besides the humans on the front lines after the Third War, and decided to put them on restauration duty, which included the repair of Dalaran’s arcane observatories.
This seemingly simple task turned out to be difficult because the remnants of the Alliance had no ships to get over the lake of Lordamere. Luckily enough,
Lady Vashj
, a naga sea witch, appeared and offered the blood elves help. Due to their common history - the naga have been high elves once in their lives as well -, Kael accepts the offer and manages to fulfill Garithos’ orders.
The naga kept supporting the blood elves, most noticeably in a heavily unfavored fight against the undead. During these events, Garithos found out about the secret alliance and decided to lock up Kael’thas and the remaining blood elves.
Shortly thereafter, Vashj - who we know was sent by Illidan himself - once again helped Kael, and together they broke out from the prisons of Dalaran. However, Garithos managed to follow them up to the portal that Kel’Thuzad once used to summon Archimonde. After a heavy fight, they both escaped through the portal to Outland.
The Pact with the Betrayer
After Kael and Vashj had arrived in Outland, they seeked out Illidan. Days went by when they suddenly found him, once again captured by Maiev, who followed him through the portal.
Eventually, they triumphed over Maiev in combat and managed to free Illidan from his magical prison.
Warcraft III, The Search for Illidan
Vashj breaks Illidan out of the cage.
Illidan Stormrage: Lady Vashj, your rescue was most timely. The thought of spending another ten thousand years in Maiev's prison was not a pleasant one.
Lady Vashj: We could not forsake you, Lord Illidan. But you owe your freedom to them.
Vashj turns to the nearby blood elves.
Illidan Stormrage: Who are they, Vashj? The young elf looks familiar, but…
Lady Vashj: They call themselves the blood elves, my lord. They are the last mortal descendants of the Highborne who served you long ago.
Lady Vashj: This is Prince Kael'thas. He and his brethren have come to bask in your wisdom--and pledge themselves to your will.
Illidan then told Vashj and Kael’thas about his plans to overtake Outland. Without many choices, Kael’thas pledged allegiance to Illidan; in return, the blood elf prince hoped that Illidan could provide his people a cure to their addiction to magic. In Warcraft III, a dedicated interlude chapter unveils Kael’s despair and Illidan’s connections to the Burning Legion:
Warcraft III, Illidan’s Task
Illidan Stormrage: You were right to come to me, Kael. I share the pain of your addiction--your hunger for magic.
Prince Kael'thas: Can you help us, Lord Illidan? Can you cure us?
Illidan Stormrage: There is no cure, young one. But there are ways to feed the hunger. Follow me, and I will grant your people more magic than they can imagine.
Prince Kael'thas: So be it. Lord Illidan, my fellow blood elves and I humbly pledge ourselves to your service.
Illidan Stormrage: Then arise, young Kael. You shall be my right hand and the harbinger of my wrath.
Prince Kael'thas: What of your plans, master?
Illidan Stormrage: Hmm. Many months after the Legion's defeat at the Battle of Mount Hyjal, I was visited by one of the last great demonlords--Kil'jaeden.
A flashback occurs.
Kil'jaeden: Illidan, in the past you have been both friend and foe to the Burning Legion. But, by consuming the Skull of Gul'dan, you sealed our defeat in this world. I come to offer you a second chance to serve us.
Illidan Stormrage: What would you have me do, great one?
Kil'jaeden: My creation, the Lich King, has betrayed me. He dared to break the pact that binds him to my will, but his spirit still lies trapped inside the Frozen Throne of Icecrown. Destroy it for me, and I will grant you your heart's desire.
Illidan Stormrage: It shall be done, great one. It shall be done.
Flashback ends.
Illidan Stormrage: At Dalaran, I attempted to use the Eye of Sargeras to melt away the polar icecaps surrounding the Icecrown Glacier. If the spell had succeeded, the Lich King would have been vanquished forever.
Lady Vashj: But the cursed night elves intervened.
Illidan Stormrage: And the spell went awry. Given my failure, I fled to this desolate place to evade Kil'jaeden's wrath. Now, if I am to remain here in exile, we will need to ensure that Kil'jaeden's agents have been cleansed from the land.
In the next chapter of the blood elf campaign, Kael’thas and Illidan prepared to fight against the annihilan Magtheridon in his residence called the Black Temple.
Together with the Broken called Akama, leader of the Ashtongue Brotherhood, an exiled clan of draenei who had been exposed to fel energy, they fought down the pit lord and eventually took the citadel.
But suddenly, Kil’jaeden himself rose from a gargantuan storm cloud, confronting Illidan and his allies:
Warcraft III, The Search for Illidan
Prince Kael'thas: What is this, Vashj? Where did this storm come from?
Lady Vashj: Keep your head down, fool! Something terrible is drawing near!
Kil'jaeden: Foolish little mongrel. You failed to destroy the Frozen Throne as I commanded. And still you thought to hide from me in this forsaken backwater! I thought you to be more cunning, Illidan.
Illidan Stormrage: Kil'jaeden! I was merely set back. I was attempting to bolster my forces. The Lich King will be destroyed, I promise you!
Kil'jaeden: Indeed? Still, these servitors you've gathered show some promise. I will give you one last chance, Illidan. Destroy the Frozen Throne, or face my eternal wrath!
Illidan Stormrage: Perhaps hiding here was not the most prudent decision. Still, the quest lies before us. Will you follow me into the cold heart of death itself?
Lady Vashj: The naga are yours to command, Lord Illidan. Where you go, we follow.
Prince Kael'thas: The blood elves are yours, as well, master. We will drive the Scourge before us -- and shatter the Frozen Throne as you command.
The Frozen Throne
From there on, a race to the Frozen Throne between Arthas and the dynamic trio took place in Warcraft III’s Scourge campaign.
As both parties tried to control the four obelisks around Icecrown Citadel so that they could access the Frozen Throne, Illidan, Arthas and Kael’thas exchanged words:
Warcraft III, A Symphony of Frost and Flame
Illidan Stormrage: Hello, Arthas.
King Arthas: You look different, Illidan. I guess the Skull of Gul'dan didn't agree with you.
King Arthas: Are you still upset that I stole Jaina from you, Kael?
Prince Kael'thas: You've taken everything I ever cared for, Arthas. Vengeance is all I have left.
After both parties reached the Frozen Throne, Kael'thas and Arthas got into a fight. Despite the fact that Kael was able to parry Arthas' attacks with the reforged
Felo'melorn
, he teleported away just before the Lordaeron prince would have been able to kill him. Just moments later, Arthas found Illidan on the battlefield, and what followed has made history as one of the most important duels in Warcraft history:
And with that, Arthas took his place as the next
Lich King
.
Without their master, there was nothing Kael’thas and Vashj could do to stop Arthas. After they had retrieved Illidan’s body and fled from the scene, the blood elf prince and his naga companion decided to return to Outland.
World of Warcraft
The Beginning of Burning Crusade
After the devastating loss against the Lich King, Kael’thas and what was left of his people focussed on finding a new way to saturate their thirst for magic. And although Kael learned the basic art of draining magical power from Illidan, he started to doubt his master, as he lost countless blood elves that decided to join the Illidari.
That is when Kil’jaeden approached Kael, who promised to teach him more effective ways of draining magic, and eventually he persuaded the blood elf prince to abandoning Illidan and serve the leader of the Burning Legion instead. But despite his best intentions, Kael’s further plans didn’t come to fruition. During an attack on Shattrath, a large group of blood elves led by
Voren’thal the Seer
decided to
part ways with Kael’thas
after they had found out about Kael's pact with the Burning Legion.
Tempest Keep
With the remaining blood elven forces, Kael’thas moved to Netherstorm to explore new ways to drain magic. He managed to conquer
Tempest Keep
, once a powerful fortress used as a ship created by the naaru, mystical entities of light and arch enemies of the Burning Legion. Kael even captured
M’uru
, the naaru who was ordered to protect the fortress; thanks to his knowledge about portals and the technology of Tempest Keep, he transported M’uru to Quel’Thalas where its energy was used as a substitute for the sunwell. During that time, the first blood elf paladins emerged under the influence of M’uru’s pure and holy influence, led by Liadrin.
As Kael’thas already owned one of the Vials of Eternity and began to put his focus on the
Cipher of Damnation
, a powerful artifact of Outland that could have been used to summon Kil’Jaeden himself, both the Horde and the Alliance set out to end the terror within Tempest Keep.
In an intense final fight in
the Eye, the sanctuary of Tempest Keep,
Kael’thas' fate had been sealed. However, he had not been killed in fight, as players experience after turning in the the
Verdant Sphere to A’dal in Shattrath
:
Kael’thas and the Verdant Sphere, Kael’thas Monologue
Kael'thas Sunstrider yells: “Your monkeys failed to finish the job, naaru. Beaten but alive... The same mistake was not made when we took command of your vessel.”
Kael'thas Sunstrider yells: “All for what? Trinkets? You are too late. The preparations have already begun. Soon the master will make his return.”
Kael'thas Sunstrider yells: “And there is nothing you or that fool, Illidan, can do to stop me! You have both served me in your own right - unwittingly.”
Kael'thas laughs.
Kael'thas Sunstrider yells: “Lay down your arms and succumb to the might of Kil'jaeden!”
Magisters’ Terrace: The Return of Kael’thas
As we know from the
Dawnblade Blood Knights
in Quel’Thalas it was the shivarra called
Priestess Delrissa
that resurrected Kael’thas after his downfall in Tempest Keep.
From there on out, all Kael’thas - now just a pale and fel-addicted version of his former self - wanted was to bring his master Kil’jaeden and the Burning Legion to his world. He travelled back home where he and his felblood elves captured M’uru - the naaru that gave magical life to the blood elves of Quel’Thalas - to abuse its powers.
A task force consisting of the
Shattered Sun Offensive
,
Liadrin’s Blood Knights
and
Prophet Velen
tried to get hold of Kael’thas who entrenched himself in the
Magisters’ Terrace
, just northeast of Quel’Thalas.
He also stole away
Anveena
, the avatar of the Sunwell, who was put in place by the red dragon
Korialstrasz
above the well to store its remaining powers after it had been corrupted by Arthas and then destroyed by Kael’thas and his magi.
Thankfully, Kael’thas plans to sacrifice Anveena and M’uru were thwarted by the combined effort of Azeroth’s adventurers and the Shattered Sun Offensive, and The Prince of Quel’Thalas had finally been slain.
And not only that: Later on, Prophet Velen restored the power of the sunwell thanks to M’uru’s pure heart, resurrecting the hope of a whole people. From there on, the blood elves under
Regent Lor’themar Theron
have rebuilt Quel’Thalas as well as the political connection to the rest of Azeroth.
Shadowlands
In World of Warcraft’s upcoming expansion
Shadowlands
,
Kael’thas Sunstrider will appear as a part of the Venthyr Covenant of Revendreth
, where he atones for the sins he once committed to the people of Quel’Thalas.
