Lor'themar Theron Lore Videos by Nobbel87
Before the Second War
Not much is known about Lor'themar Theron's youth, other than he was a ranger - and a Farstrider lieutenant by the time the High Elves of Quel'thalas found themselves seriously clashing with the Amani Trolls of Zul'Aman. On a mission to inspect the runestones that guard Quel'thalas, Lor'themar was ambushed by the Amani, who brought him, as well as the high priestess Liadrin, her apprentice Galell, and the magister Dar'Khan Drathir, before their leader, Zul'jin.
Zul'jin interrogated the Elves about the runestones and the power of the Sunwell, and personally tortured Lor'themar, even painting himself with Lor'themar's blood. However, Lor'themar was able to fight back, and Dar'Khan managed to teleport the group to safety. The incident would cause a strong bond of friendship between the four Elves.
The Second War
By the time of the Second War between the Alliance and the invading Orcish Horde, Lor'themar had been promoted to second-in-command to Silvermoon's Ranger-General,
Silvanas Windrunner
. While the High Elves had sworn an ancient oath to the Humans, promising to aid them in times of trouble, King Anasterian Sunstrider was at first reluctant to send any more than a token force to assist with the war effort. However, when the Horde allied itself with the Amani Trolls and together lay siege to Quel'Thalas, Sunstrider joined his forces with the Alliance in earnest.
During this time, Lor'themar met with Alleria Windrunner and Turalyon, a human Knight of the Silver Hand. Together, they took on the Dragonmaw clan who had brought with them their red dragon mounts. The dragon flames proved too much for them, and Lor'themar convinced Alleria that they needed to retreat. Cut off, now, from Silvermoon City, Lor'themar convinced Alleria to retreat, and they joined the defenses of Lordaeron City, which was being besieged by Ogrim Doomhammer.
Ogrim was betrayed by his warlock Gul'dan. The Dragonmaw, who were tasked by their warchief to keep an eye on Gul'dan, discovered the warlock's treachery and retreated from Quel'Thalas to warn Orgrim Doomhammer, who abandoned the siege of Lordaeron after hearing the news. The Amani Trolls were soon beaten back, and Zul'jin was captured and tortured by Lor'themar's friend, the ranger Halduron Brightwing, who intended to hold on to the Troll leader until Lor'themar could return and decide his fate. However, Zul'jin cut off his own arm to escape.
For his part in the war, Lor'themar was promoted to Ranger Lord.
The Third War
By the time of the Third War, Lore'themar had become tasked with watching over the Sunwell. His old friend, Dar'Khan Drathir, used their friendship during this time to learn all that he could about the Sunwell and Quel'Thalas's defenses. Dar'Khan, who was always ambitious, had become bitter and resentful over what he felt was a lack of recognition, so when the opportunity came to betray his people and align himself with the death knight Prince Arthas, who was invading with his Scourge, Dar'Khan did so eagerly.
Up until now, Quel'Thalas had been protected by an impenetrable shield powered by three hidden mooncrystals. Dar'Khan was able to tell Arthas about the mooncrystals and how to take down the shield, but it was knowledge he learned from Lor'themar. Lor'themar discovered something was wrong while he and his rangers were on patrol. They discovered that the first of the three mooncrystals had been stolen, and rushed to the location of the second, where they encountered undead High Elves, killed and risen by Arthas's Scourge. During the following battle. Lor'themar was wounded badly, and he lost his left eye. However, Halduron Brightwing arrived just in time to save his life.
Arthas had come to Quel'Thalas because of the Sunwell - he needed its magic to resurrect the necromancer Ke'Thuzad. While the Elves fought bravely, they were overpowered by the Scourge forces. Arthas killed Sylvanas and raised her as a banshee - a punishment for the trouble she had caused him. The city was sacked, and King Anasterian Sunstrider, as well as the rest of the ruling council of Silvermoon, were killed. By the time Lor'themar fought his way to the Sunwell, it was too late. Arthas had gone, his goal accomplished, and the resurrection ritual had corrupted the Sunwell.
As the highest-ranked of the remaining Elves, Lor'themar was made temporary leader, and he set to work trying to clear the remaining Scourge. When
Prince Kael'thas Sunstrider
returned, Lor'themar was the one to bring him to his father's body. The corrupted Sunwell had become a danger, and needed to be destroyed. The remaining Scourge were still a threat, and the Amani Trolls were circling once more. Lor'themar was one of the Elves who helped Kael'thas destroy the Sunwell and take out some of the remaining threat with the explosion.
In honor of those who had fallen, Kael'thas declared that his people would be known no longer as High Elves, but as Blood Elves from that moment on. He refused to allow anyone to call him King, stating that his father would remain the last King of Quel'thalas. He named Lor'themar Regent Lord of Quel'Thalas before taking some Blood Elf forces to assist the Alliance against the Scourge in Lordaeron. Halduron Brightwing was named Ranger-General of Silvermoon.
Kael'thas found himself under the command of a racist human named Lord Garithos. Pushed repeatedly into completing nearly impossible tasks, Kael'thas accepted the help of the Naga Lady Vashj rather than see his people killed, even after he was commanded not to by Garithos. This disobedience was all the excuse Garithos needed, and he commanded Kael'thas and his Blood Elves be imprisoned in Dalaran. With Lady Vashj's help once again, Kael'thas escaped prison and escaped through a portal to Outland, where he determined to build a new home for his people. Lor'themar was left to face the challenge of being Regent Lord.
Aftermath of the Third War
The Sunwell
When the Sunwell exploded, it wasn't quite destroyed. The red dragon Korialstrasz noticed that some of the Sunwell's energy lingered. Fearing that Prince Arthas would want it, he transformed it into a human girl named Anveena Teague, gave her false memories and a family, and hid her away in Tarren Mill. Anveena had no idea what she really was, but through a series of events during which she befriended (and eventually fell in love with) the blue dragon Kalecgos, found herself face to face with Dark'Khan Drathir, now undead, who had realized some of the Sunwell's energies had remained and had been seeking it ever since.
Dark'Khan was able to capture Anveena and he brought her to Quel'Thalas, where he planned to harvest her energies. Lor'themar and Halduron were out fighting the Scourge when they learned of Drak'Khan's presence in their kingdom. Lor'themar, still guilt-ridden over Drak'Khan's betrayal and what it cost his people, was determined to destroy his once friend. During this time, he came across Sylvanas Windrunner, who was still a banshee but by now had regained control over her choices, and who also wanted revenge on Drak'Khan.
Eventually, Anveena awakened her powers and defeated Dar'Khan. Lor'themar learned of her origins, and placed her under the protection of the Blood Elves, swearing to keep her and her identity a secret. Sylvanas also promised to keep the secret.
A New Way of Life
Left in charge of a broken city, Lor'themar found his troubles were just beginning. Remnants of the Scourge still lingered throughout Quel'Thalas. The loss of the Sunwell was causing the Blood Elves to go into magic withdrawal. Kael'thas sent Grand Magister Rommath and some of his magisters to Silvermoon to teach the Blood Elves a new method to sate their appetite for magic - they could harvest arcane magic from living creatures. This new method horrified some of the Blood Elves, who saw it vampiric in nature. Worried about division tearing his people apart even more, Lor'themar made the difficult decision to exile those who refused to follow the new method, sending them to the Plaguelands.
Some Elves became overwhelmed by their magic addiction, constantly trying to sate a hunger that would only grow. These Elves would start to deteriorate, becoming mindless, near-skeletal creatures known as the Wretched.
Lor'themar continued to show affection to his old friend Lady Liadrin, even sending her some of his own mana crystals to make sure she never felt overwhelmed by her magic addiction. The fall of Quel'Thalas affected her greatly, as it affected all Blood Elves, and she lost her faith and was unable to continue being a Priestess of the Light.
Kael'thas had sent Silvermoon the captured Naaru M'uru, who the magisters kept bound so that he could be used as a source of power. This Naaru provided a connection to the Light that those who had become disillusioned and lost their faith could still use. Instead of calling on the Light through faith, these Blood Elves would forcefully siphon the Light from the captive Naaru. A new order of Blood Elf paladins was formed, called the Blood Knights. Lady Liadrin became the first and the leader of these Blood Knights.
As it turned out, Dar'Khan survived the battle with Anveena, and he resurfaced, this time under the name of Thadirr. Lor'themar pursued the traitor and was able to corner him, but he nearly died in the confrontation. The Blood Knights came together to heal him, and Lor'themar was able to defeat Dar'Khan once more.
After this, Lor'themar found Lady Liadrin in the cave he, Dar'Khan, Liadrin, and her apprentice Galell had once been held captive and tortured by Amani Trolls. She was deeply shaken - having just been forced to kill Galell, who had been hiding out in the cave and was transforming into a Wretched. Of the four friends, now only two were left.
Lor'themar, a ranger rather than a leader at heart, would come to rely heavily on his two advisors: Halduron Brightwing and Grand Magister Rommath.
Burning Crusade
Joining the Horde
With Kael'thas in Outland, the Scourge still lingering in the lands of Quel'Thalas, and the Amani threat growing again, the Blood Elves found themselves in desperate need of allies. Lor'themar tried writing letters to the Alliance, but while they sent an ambassador, it was only as part of a plot to sabotage their arcane sanctums. In the Burning Crusade, a quest was introduced that allowed Horde players to uncover this plot and
kill the Alliance ambassador
. The Alliance were still too angry with Kael'thas's decision to align himself with Lady Vashj and the Night Elf traitor Illidan Stormrage.
However, help would come from a surprising source - the banshee Sylvanas had become the leader of an Undead faction known as the Forsaken. Unlike the Scourge, the Forsaken were free from the Lich King's influence and had regained control over their own minds. Rejected, also, by the Alliance, they had joined the Horde, and Sylvanas reached out to her old second-in-command. She offered Forsaken assistance in the Ghostlands, and arranged a meeting with Lor'themar,
Warchief Thrall
, and Cairne Bloodhoof. Though suspicious of Sylvanas's motives, Lor'themar accepted the help in Ghostlands and attended the meeting.
While the Blood Elf position in the Horde was still being considered, Dar'Khan appeared yet again. In a Burning Crusade questline, Horde players were asked to kill the traitor once more and
bring his head to Lor'themar
.
The Ghostlands secured and the Blood Elves officially accepted into the Horde, Lor'themar became a lot more confident about his people's future. However, like many of his race, he still longed for the day Prince Kael'thas would return.
Journey to Outland
Lor'themar became convinced that Anveena was the key to bringing Kael'thas home. If he could just let the Prince know about the Sunwell, surely he would return. He tried to send messages to Kael'thas. However, by this time Kael'thas was under Kil'Jaeden's control, and the demon lord did not want him to receive any news that would bring him hope. Kil'Jaeden had already infiltrated Quel'Thelas with his demons, and they intercepted the messages.
When the Blood Elves journeyed to Outland along with the Horde, they discovered the truth - that Kael'thas was addicted to fel magic and had joined Kil'jaeden. Lor'themar was horrified and saddened by the news, but also recognized that it was the Blood Elves' duty to deal with their own treacherous Prince. The Horde assaulted Tempest Keep, where they defeated Kael'thas. However, Kil'jaeden wasn't done with the Prince yet. He saved Kael'thas's life, though not his sanity, drove a fel crystal into his heart, and made the Blood Elf his servant.
The Prince's Homecoming
Kael'thas returned home after all, but to wage war. With an army of demons, he invaded Silvermoon, kidnapped both Anveena and the Naaru M'uru, and headed to the Isle of Quel'Danas, where he used resources gathered from Outland to reignite the Sunwell and attempt to use it to summon Kil'jaeden into Azeroth. However, the Horde were able to defeat him again, this time for good. Lor'themar found himself facing an old problem - a tainted Sunwell, its corruption a growing danger to his people. Lor'themar feared he would have to destroy this Sunwell as well. Thankfully, the prophet Velen was able to cleanse the Sunwell by using the heart of M'uru.
While the Sunwell's return meant a new dawn of hope for the Blood Elf people, for Lor'themar it also meant something else. The war with Kael'thas was over and he, Lor'themar, was officially the leader of the Blood Elves. Since he never sought out or relished power, the moment was bittersweet for him.
Aftermath of the Burning Crusade
Lor'themar, never quite comfortable with ruling, began to really feel the burden of leadership once the promise that Kael'thas would one day return and take over had disappeared. He conflicted with both Halduron and Rommath over this, who constantly tried to pressure him to present himself in a way that was less ranger-general and more king. While Lor'themar was still adjusting to these new expectations being placed on him, Aethas Sunreaver, leader of the Sunreavers - Blood Elf members of the Kirin Tor of Dalaran - arrived with a request.
The leader of the Blue Dragonflight, Malygos, felt that mortal magic weilders were using arcane magic too recklessly, and so had decided to kill them all. Aethas had come to request aid. Rommath, who was with Kael'thas when the Blood Elves were imprisoned in Dalaran, objected that the Kirin Tor didn't deserve help, but Lor'themar promised to consider the plea.
A few days later, Lor'themar journeyed to Quel'Lithien Lodge in the Plaguelands, where he visited those Blood Elves he had exiled for refusing to suck arcane magic from living creatures. He spoke with Ranger Lord Hawkspear and Aurora Skycaller, shocking them with the news of Kael'thas's betrayal and death and the Sunwell's restoration. Now that the Blood Elves no longer had to rely on draining magic from living creatures, Lor'themar's intention was make amends, offering aid and supplies. Hawkspear was not having any, still blaming Lor'themar for banishing them in the first place, and angry that the Blood Elves' new undead allies in the form of
Nathanos Blightcaller
had attacked the lodge. He even threatened to kill Lor'themar and send his head to Sylvanas.
Lor'themar returned home, deeply upset, and troubled by the accusation against Nathanos. Once more, he found himself wondering if the Forsaken could be trusted, but also knew that the Blood Elves had no other choice. They needed allies, and no one else would fight for them. Soon after, Sylvanas herself visited Lor'themar to inform him that his Blood Elves would be needed in the coming war against Arthas. Lor'themar objected that his people were not strong enough yet - they needed more time to recover. Sylvanas reminded him, on no uncertain terms, that the Blood Elves needed the support they were getting from the Forsaken, and that that support could be easily pulled. Lor'themar was forced to agree to send Blood Elf forces to Undercity.
Rommath was furious with Lor'themar and confronted him, but Lor'themar responded that he has to do what he must to ensure the survival of his people. Rommath warned him that Kael'thas said the same thing, leaving Lor'themar even more uneasy. However, since he was being forced to send Blood Elves to Northrend anyway, he promised Aethas the aid the Sunreaver had requested. Aethas expressed concern that Lor'themar's decision was not quite his own will, and Lor'themar insisted that it was. However, his journal entry afterward revealed the fact that he lied.
Journal of the Regent Lord, entry 83
I cannot remember the last time I told anyone such a bald-faced lie, even since I was forced
into politics. But I did lie to Aethas, and he knows it, and I know it, and anyone who heard me say
it knows it. My will means very little, in fact. I can pretend my power is real, but in the end, it is all
an act, and none of it is honest. I can wash my hands of it, play martyr, be victimized, and
accomplish nothing, or I can fight and victimize others in my turn and thus become the essence of
all I have battled. If I have ever rationalized my choices using any other logic, I was certainly lying
to myself. Hawkspear was right: I deal with the devil indeed, but the Sunwell may never have
been restored had we not sunk to those levels. He and Aurora can sleep soundly, knowing they
have never compromised their ethics, but if they deny that they prosper in the wake of those who
have, then they delude themselves as much as I.
Here I find myself so close to believing that the ends justify the means. But the ruins of the
Magisters' Terrace will haunt me forever, reminding me of the fate I tempt with that thought. This
is the line I walk, finally knowing that the actions I take in necessity are nonetheless indefensible.
Those truths can never be reconciled, but sometimes I can hold them both side by side and
almost understand. I might call this revelation profound if I were ignorant enough not to realize
that I am only learning what Kael'thas, and Anasterian before him, had also learned in their turns.
All we can do is walk the road we are given with such dignity as we can muster, each to our own
glory or demise, and pray that there yet remains something of our own hearts when all is said and done. By the Sunwell, I hope that there will remain something of mine.
Wrath of the Lich King
Lor'themar kept to his word and Blood Elves join the other Horde forces in the war against Arthas, the Lich King. While in Northrend, players could
pick up an object
that would allow them to begin a questline to restore the legendary blade of Quel'Delar. At a point in this questline, players needed to cleanse the blade in the Sunwell. If the player was not a Blood Elf, Lor'themar would thank them for returning it to its "rightful owners" and try to claim it. The blade itself would wound Lor'themar, as the player would be the rightful owner. However, with Blood Elf players, Lor'themar would simply honor them and call them heroes of his people.
Cataclysm
While most of Azeroth was torn apart by the Cataclysm - with classic zones receiving an overhaul, both geographically and in quest rewrites - Quel'Thalas remained mostly unaffected. However, the old enemy that was the Amani Trolls, began to gather again in Zul'Aman. Ranger-General Halduron Brightwing and his Farstriders left Silvermoon to take care of them, joined by
Vol'jin
, leader of the Darkspear Trolls. Halduron also called on the High Elf Vereesa Windrunner for aid, a call she answered.
Vareesa had founded the Silver Covenant, a group of High Elves that opposed the acceptance of Blood Elves into the Kirin Tor. When Lor'themar discovered she was in the Ghostlands, he was extremely annoyed and sent a messenger to Halduron, demanding to know why she was there.
After the Cataclysm, Thrall, Warchief of the Horde, stepped down so that he could focus on his Shaman duties of healing the earth. He appointed Garrosh Hellscream the new Warchief. In a meeting between the Horde faction leaders in which Garrosh discussed plans to attack Theramore, Sylvanas, worried that the attack would bring retribution on her city, objected, and tried to convince Lor'themar to back her up, as his city would also be at risk. Lor'themar, no doubt still angry about being forced to send Blood Elves to Northrend before they were ready, ignored her. Garrosh approached him afterward to thank him for his loyalty, but Lor'themar's response makes it clear that he was loyal to the Horde, not to Garrosh itself. Lor'themar did send Blood Elves to assist in the attack on Theramore, though he didn't go himself despite being expected to.
Mists of Pandaria
Growing Dissatisfaction with Garrosh
During the invasion of Pandaria, Lor'themar and the Blood Elves joined the Horde forces at the command of Warchief Garrosh, and were given the task of recovering mogu artifacts. Lor'themar was angered when the Warchief failed to warn him of the strength of the Mogu presence in Kun-Lai Summit, putting his Blood Elf forces at risk. At this time, Lor'themar was growing increasingly frustrated with Garrosh.
Later, once Lor'themar had returned to Silvermoon, Garrosh sent him a mogu artifact to inspect. Rommath and Aethas Sunreaver experimented on the artifact until it nearly released an ancient sha on Silvermoon. The threat was contained, but Lor'themar was furious at the close call, and made a comment about considering "old Alliances". King Varian Wrynn of the Alliance had begun to communicate with Lor'themar, hoping to bring the Blood Elves back into his faction. With Garrosh treating the Blood Elves with such disregard, Lor'themar was strongly considering switching sides.
Shortly after, Garrosh, determined to get his hands on the Divine Bell that was being held safe by the Kirin Tor, sent Horde agents to steal it.
Jaina Proudmoore
, leader of the Kirin Tor and already furious with the Horde since the bombing of Theramore, blamed the theft on the Blood Elf Sunreavers, and purged them from Dalaran, imprisoning some and killing others. Aethas Sunreaver managed to escape, and when he told Lor'themar of Jaina's actions, the Ranger Lord was furious. After completing the quest
One Last Grasp
, Horde players could witness this fury:
Lor'themar Theron says: She's gone too far. I'm certain the Alliance can move their war mages through the city at will. That human ... witch!
Lor'themar angrily flips a bench into the nearby fountain.
Lor'themar Theron says: When will they learn? When will they see that the Horde exists BECAUSE of the Alliance? Because of their prejudice and their bigotry!? They force us ever closer to Hellscream's Horde.
Though this made Lor'themar angry enough with the Alliance to end all negotiations, he also expressed anger with Garrosh, who he blamed for the death of his people.
Lor'themar Theron says: And get this damn thing out of my sight! Hellscream bought this treasure with the blood of my people. I hope it destroys him.
Grand Magister Rommath says: My Lord. YOU would make a fine Warchief.
Lor'themar Theron says: It may come to that. Bring me my blades. The next move is mine.
The Thunder King
Over time, the Zandalari Trolls resurrected their ancient mogu ally, Lei Shen the Thunder King, and Lor'themar was given the command of the Horde forces that took on this threat - the Sunreaver Onslaught. Horde players were able to join Lor'Themar Theron on
the Isle of Thunder
. By this point, the rebellion against Garrosh was beginning to be seriously considered, enough for Lor'themar to be making specific preparations. At the end of the quest
The Storm Gathers
, he made the following statement:
Lor'themar Theron says: Hero, you have served the Horde nobly across many campaigns. I feel I can take you into confidence.
Lor'themar Theron says: Our Warchief's campaign across Kalimdor and Pandaria is pulling the Horde apart at the seams.
Lor'themar Theron says: We are here to fight the Thunder King. Justice demands it, and Hellscream is too preoccupied at Domination Point to pay attention here.
Lor'themar Theron says: But, in defeating him, we must seek out the source of his great power. We must claim it for ourselves, as leverage against our "Warchief."
Lor'themar Theron says: In the event of an uprising, we must be prepared.
With the help of the player, Scout Captain Elsia and Aethas Sunreaver, Lor'themar's preparations for the assault on the Thunder King's stronghold were successful.
However, as he entered the courtyard of the Throne of Thunder, he met Jaina Proudmoore, who was in charge of the Alliance assault against the Thunder King, the Kirin Tor Offensive. Lor'themar and Jaina instantly began arguing. Jaina demanded that Lor'themar hand over Aethas Sunreaver. Lor'themar, for his part, demanded that Jaina release the Sunreavers she still had imprisoned in Dalaran.
Their argument was interrupted by Taran Zhu, leader of the Shado-Pan, who angrily accused them of being part of the reason why the Horde and the Alliance would never stop fighting. He challenged them to break the cycle. Despite his anger and mistrust, Lor'themar was the first to agree, and ordered his rangers to lower their weapons. While Jaina also agreed to stand down, she warned Lor'themar that there could be no peace between the Alliance and the Horde while Garrosh was Warchief. Lor'themar told her that he agreed, making it very clear that he fully intended to rebel against Garrosh. Both
Horde
and
Alliance
players could witness the confrontation between them during the quest The Fall of Shan Bu:
Lady Jaina Proudmoore yells: Hand over the Archmage and I may yet allow you to walk out of here, Lor'themar.
Lor'themar Theron yells: Proudmoore! You will release my people from the Violet Hold, or I will cut you down myself!
Lady Jaina Proudmoore yells: Your people are legitimate prisoners of war. They orchestrated an attack on Darnassus from MY city-
Lor'themar Theron yells: The Sunreavers knew NOTHING of Garrosh's raid on Darnassus!
Aethas Sunreaver shifts uncomfortably.
Taran Zhu yells: ENOUGH! There will be no more bloodshed today.
Taran Zhu yells: I see now why your Alliance and your Horde cannot stop fighting.
Taran Zhu yells: Every reprisal is itself an act of aggression, and every act of aggression triggers immediate reprisal.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore yells: They have undermined EVERY attempt at peace!
Lor'themar Theron yells: I must protect my sovereign people.
Taran Zhu yells: SILENCE! YOU must break the cycle.
Taran Zhu yells: It ends TODAY. Here. The cycle ends when you, Regent Lord, and you, Lady Proudmoore, turn from one another. And walk. Away.
Lor'themar narrows his eyes.
Jaina takes a deep breath.
Lor'themar Theron yells: Rangers. Lower your weapons.
Scout Captain Elsia yells: My Lord!
Lor'themar Theron says: Do it.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore says: Very well. We will stand down.
Vereesa Windrunner yells: They killed my husband!
Lady Jaina Proudmoore says: This won't bring him back.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore says: But know this, "Blood" Elf: There can be no peace while Hellscream is Warchief of the Horde.
Lor'themar Theron says: That is precisely why I wish to conserve our strength today.
Jaina's expression softens.
Lor'themar Theron says: Lady.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore says: Lord.
Lor'themar Theron yells: Gather the wounded. Withdraw to the harbor.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore yells: Everyone, regroup back at the camp. Our work here is done.
Rebellion
While Lor'themar fully supported Vol'jin's rebellion, he stayed in Pandaria until the
Siege of Orgrimmar
itself. When Garrosh's obsession with finding power unleashed the Sha of Pride on the Vale of Eternal Blossoms, near destroying it, Lorewalker Cho called on both Lor'themar and Jaina for help. They noticed that Garrosh had left Gorehowl behind, and Lor'themar commented that it meant the Warchief was "completely unhinged".
On the ship to Bladefist Bay, Sylvanas approached Lor'themar with an idea. She had gained Val'kyr, and with them, the ability to raise new undead, shortly after the events of Wrath of the Lich King. Sylvanas suggested that she raise any fallen Blood Elves, a suggestion that Lor'themar strongly rejected, even threatening Sylvanas if she tried anything. However, he did allow her to raise any fallen humans, reasoning that that would be the Alliance's problem.
Lor'themar Theron says: Bladefist Bay is fortified -- by the Sunwell, we're getting slaughtered! Heroes. Port over to the docks and take out their shore defenses. Put a stop to this bloodshed.
Sylvanas Windrunner says: I can raise your dead, Regent Lord. Your rangers can fight again.
Lor'themar Theron says: Sylvanas! You will leave our corpses alone, or I will deal with you here and now.
Sylvanas Windrunner says: I'm sorry to see your lack of commitment... What of the human corpses?
Lor'themar Theron says: ...well, I suppose that's between you and the Alliance, isn't it?
Later, another exchange illustrated the odd relationship between the Blood Elf Ranger Lord and the Undead Banshee Queen. Sylvanas expressed a regret that Lor'themar hadn't died, as he would have made an attractive corpse. He chose to take her comment as a compliment.
Garrosh was defeated, and Vol'jin named the new Warchief, a choice that Lor'themar seemed happy with. Garrosh was arrested and put on trial for his crimes. Like all the faction leaders, Lor'themar was present at the trial.
Lor'themar did not visit alternative Draenor. For the duration of Warlords of Draenor, he remained in Silvermoon.
Legion
Lor'themar took part in the assault on the Broken Shore, and did not object when a dying Vol'jin named Sylvanas the next Warchief.
When the Horde needed to find new allies, Lady Liadrin suggested the Nighborne, who she said were very similar to the Blood Elves. Lor'themar agreed, and invited
First Arcanist Thalyssra
to Silvermoon. At the same time, the missing Windrunner sister,
Alleria Windrunner
, had returned to Azeroth, and had requested to visit Lor'themar as well. Since Quel'Thalas was once her home, Lor'themar welcomed the visit.
As it turned out, Alleria's intention was to bring an offer from
Anduin Wrynn
, the new King of the Alliance, that Lor'themar leave the Horde and join his faction. Lor'themar rejected her right out, expressing a regret that she was using her visit to act as the "boy-king's messenger". Alleria asked him if these were his own words, or if they were really Sylvanas's. Lor'themar retorted that he had heard about Alleria's links to the void.
It's easy to see why Anduin might have thought Lor'themar would be open to switching sides. He had been involved in negotiations before, and he had personally set aside his differences to work with the Alliance during the assault on the Thunder King - long before the Alliance and Horde had to work together to fight the Legion. It's possible Anduin even knew about the slight resentment Lor'themar still felt towards Sylvanas for using threats to force him to send Blood Elves to Northrend before his people were ready, and now she was Warchief. Alleria's barb about being Sylvanas's mouthpiece should have specifically stung. However, perhaps Jaina had something to do with it.
When Khadgar pushed for Horde mages to be allowed back into the Kirin Tor, Jaina refused, and even resigned from the Kirin Tor in protest, insisting that the Horde could not be trusted. Jaina had been the Alliance member that Lor'themar had learned how to put aside his differences and work with, but now she showed she was no longer willing to do the same. Considering the fact that Jaina's purging of Dalaran was what drove Lor'themar to end negotiations with the Alliance in the first place, it's easy to speculate that her attitude was what made him so fiercely against any further negotiations with the Alliance.
Either way, while Lor'themar had no interest in any discussion about joining the Alliance, he did grant Alleria her request to see the Sunwell, despite Rommath's objections, and invited Thalyssra to join as well. However, Alleria's presence caused void creatures to spawn, which attempted to corrupt the Sunwell. Though they were able to stop the attack, Lor'themar and Rommath were furious with Alleria, with Rommath calling for her to be arrested. Lor'themar was more restrained, but he did still exile Alleria. Alleria would go outside of Silvermoon, where she would discover the Void Elves - Blood Elves who had also been exiled for their interest in the Void - and recruit them for the Alliance instead.
Lor'themar apologized to Thalyssra for having to witness the conflict, but she was impressed by his handling of the situation. During the quest
Remember the Sunwell
, Horde players could witness this exchange:
Lor'themar Theron says: I regret you had to witness that exchange, Thalyssra. This is not how I planned your visit to unfold.
First Arcanist Thalyssra says: On the contrary. This conflict has demonstrated your dedication to your people. I can see that the Horde has allowed you to uphold your traditions--something that is very important to us.
Thalyssra and the Nightborne joined the Horde, and Lor'themar welcomed Nightborne visitors to Silvermoon.
Aftermath of Legion
Though the Legion was defeated, the planet of Azeroth was left badly wounded, with Sargeras's sword embedded in Silithus. A new, powerful substance called Azerite was discovered, almost instantly igniting tensions between the Alliance and the Horde. Sylvanas greatly accelerated these tensions, eventually leading the Horde in an assault on Teldrassil, which she burned.
Whatever thoughts Lor'themar might have had about his warmongering leader, he kept them quiet. When the Alliance retaliated at the Battle of Lordaeron, Lor'themar helped with the defense of Undercity. Sylvanas raised Horde races during this battle, including Blood Elves, but it's unclear whether Lor'themar knew about it.
Battle for Azeroth
Lor'themar continued to quietly obey his Warchiefs orders, until
Baine Bloodhoof
, leader of the Tauren, was arrested for freeing
Derek Proudmoore
. When Horde players completed the quest
A Display of Power
, they turned it into Lor'themar, who expressed a worry that Sylvanas has "set in motion a ruinous path for the Horde".
Nazjatar
When the Horde and the Alliance found themselves in Nazjatar after
Queen Azshara
attacked their ships, Lor'themar took command after Nathanos Blightcaller disappeared on his own mission. Together with Thalyssra and Horde players, Lor'themar helped to establish new allies in the Unshackled. He made the discovery that Lady Ashvane was making weapons for the Naga, and began to plan the assault on Azshara.
At this time, Spiritwalker Ussoh approached Lor'themar with the news of a vision, in which Sylvanas ordered Baine's death. This was a turning point for Lor'themar, who declared that he could not longer follow the Warchief's orders, and organized a
rescue mission
that Horde players could take part in for Baine. Alliance players
also played a role
in the rescue, and Lor'themar was surprised to learn that Jaina and Mathias Shaw helped.
After this quest, Thalyssra and Lor'themar spoke a bit about the conflict between the Alliance and Horde, and conclude that it's more important to focus on defeating Azshara. Jaina's actions, and the personal history he had with her, seemed to have an impact on Lor'themar.
Lor'themar Theron says: Proudmoore and Shaw risked their lives to rescue Baine? Unexpected.
Lor'themar Theron says: Cooperation between our sides has been the exception, not the rule. More often, we are at each other's throats.
First Arcanist Thalyssra says: That animosity only benefits Azshara. Her power is considerable. Divided, we are no match for her--or the master she serves.
Lor'themar Theron says: Sylvanas has the loyalty of the people. So long as she is warchief, this war will rage within their hearts. We cannot stop it.
First Arcanist Thalyssra says: Perhaps we do not need to. It might be enough to direct our attacks against Azshara rather than the Alliance.
Lor'themar Theron says: A lesson once taught to Jaina Proudmoore and me. Your counsel is wise, Thalyssra. Our focus must be on ending Azshara's reign.
Lor'themar Theron says: But if the Alliance undermines our efforts, the flames of war will rise again.
Lor'themar and Thalyssra continued to focus their attention on Azshara, and, as they prepared their final assault, they ran into Jaina and
Genn Greymane
, who were preparing theirs. Once more, Lor'themar was forced to set differences aside due to a greater threat. Though the Alliance and Horde leaders still bickered, they were able to work together to defeat Azshara, and it was Lor'themar and Jaina who approached Azshara when she fell.
Rebellion... Again
Unfortunately,
N'Zoth
was released at this point, and the old god rescued Azshara. Faced with a far greater threat than before, Lor'themar and Jaina agreed that they could no longer waste their efforts on a pointless faction war. Lor'themar and Thalyssra would join the rebellion
Varok Saurfang
had begun against Sylvanas. At the end of the
Eternal Palace
raid, players could witness this dialogue between Lor'themar and Jaina:
Lor'themar says: Our victory rings hollow. Azshara's master will rise. Nothing can stop that now.
Jaina says: For all her lies, Priscilla Ashvane spoke one truth. The war between the Alliance and Horde has kept us distracted. Divided, we have no hope against N'Zoth.
Lor'themar says: We may have found common cause here in Nazjatar, but the battle still rages beyond these waters. So long as Sylvanas holds Orgrimmar, there can be no lasting peace.
Jaina says: The war needs to end, Lor'themar. You know this to be true.
Lor'themar says: I had hoped that reason would prevail. But the time has come to finish this.
Lor'themar says: I will tell my people what transpired here. Of how Azshara fell because we stood together. Of the threat rising from the depths, and all that is at stake if we should fail.
Lor'themar says: Then I will take my place beside Saurfang and Thrall, and pray that the sin'dorei stand with me.
Once again, Lor'themar was part of Horde forces who stood outside of Orgrimmar, ready to attack the city and remove the Warchief, but this time, Saurfang challenged Sylvanas to Mak'gora. Sylvanas, who had strange new powers, killed Saurfang, declared the Horde to be "nothing", and fled. Lor'themar was shocked, he had never seen the powers Sylvanas had used before. He wondered why she would reveal them now, or what she was gaining by abandoning the Horde.
Lor'themar helped to organize and attended Saurfang's funeral. The Horde and the Alliance turned their attention to defeating N'Zoth, and once the threat of the old god was gone, an armistice between the Alliance and Horde was declared. The Horde decided not to select a new Warchief, and instead, the faction leaders chose to rule together equally on a new Horde Council. Lor'themar would represent the Blood Elves on this council. After the quest
A Gathering of Champions
, players could witness the following conversation:
Lor'themar says: The Alliance has sent word. They have agreed to the armistice. This bitter war is finally over.
Baine says: At last we can begin to heal our wounded Earth Mother... and the wounded Horde as well.
Lor'themar says: One question remains. Who will serve as warchief? Perhaps, you, Thrall, would--
Thrall says: No. I told Saurfang I would not lead the Horde again.
Thrall says: But perhaps the question is not who will become warchief... but whether there should be one at all.
Lor'themar says: Though the Horde has changed through the years--for good or ill--our people have always looked to a warchief to guide us forward.
Baine says: That legacy must end. The war nearly cost us everything. There is no place for a warchief in a time of peace.
Thrall says: It is true--the Horde has changed. Our ranks have grown, and new voices have stepped forth to lead.
Thrall says: This is what makes us strong. All of us, building a new future--together.
Relationship with Thalyssra
Lor'themar and Thalyssra grew close during their time on Nazjatar, and, once all the threats and chaos had calmed down, were able to look forward to being able to spend more time together. Upon completing
Warchief of the Horde
, players could witness this dialogue:
Lor'themar says: Thank you again for leading our forces in Nazjatar alongside me, Thalyssra. Your insight and courage were key to our victory.
First Arcanist says: It was an honor, Lor'themar. I am relieved the war is finally over. Now you have no excuse to refuse my invitation to visit Suramar.
Lor'themar says: Well, uh... I have been away from Silvermoon for some time. No doubt my people require--
First Arcanist says: Halduron has assured me that Quel'Thalas is quite secure. And Rommath said that if you put up a fuss, he will teleport you to the Nighthold himself.
Lor'themar says: It seems my closest allies are conspiring against me!
First Arcanist says: Would it really take a conspiracy for you to spend time alone with me?
Lor'themar says: No, my lady. It would be my pleasure.
First Arcanist says: A suitably chivalrous answer, Regent Lord. There may be hope for you yet! Perhaps I can even teach you to relish the... simpler joys of life.
Lor'themar says: Perhaps you can, First Arcanist. Perhaps you can.
First Arcanist says: I will accept, if you will stand by my side, as counselor... and friend.
Before long, Lor'themar had quite fallen in love with Thalyssra. Though his role on the Council meant he was burdened with even more leadership responsibilities than ever before, he still managed to find the time for a visit to Suramar, during which the two Elves participated in a friendly poetry contest before retiring to talk more privately. Thalyssra noticed that Lor'themar's poem still revealed lingering regrets over Kael'thas Sunstrider, while her poem was about truly experiencing the pleasures and pains of life. She gentle suggested the reason why Lor'themar dwelled on old wounds because they were familiar, and encouraged him to focus on the present. They kissed, and for once Lor'themar was able to decide to enjoy the moment - the outside world could wait.
Lor'themar and Thalyssra continued their relationship, and in fact the Alliance spymaster
Mathias Shaw
later received news of Lor'themar's love-struck state in a report from one of his Blood Elf spies.
Horde Council
Soon after the formation of the Horde council, the Zandalari Queen
Talanji
visited Orgrimmar requesting support against the Alliance. She was still angry about the death of her father, King
Rastakhan
, and wanted revenge against Jaina Proudmoore in particular. The council ultimately refused her request - though willing to offer Queen Talanji support and assistance, they were not willing to risk the new armistice and would not take up arms against the Alliance. Lor'themar reasoned that they needed to act cautiously, particularly as the Horde's resources were stretched thin as it was, and suggested a diplomatic solution - which Talanji rejected angrily.
The Horde council decided to send the troll
Zekhan
as a Horde ambassador to Talanji's kingdom of Zandalar, and Lor'themar explained that they would expect him to report any information he could gather.
Later, Jaina sent word to Thrall. The Alliance spymaster, Alliance Shaw, had been captured and taken prisoner by Talanji's forces in Zandalar. Jaina explained that Mathias had evidence of Dark Rangers in Zandalar, and requested a meeting with Thrall. When Thrall reported this to the Horde council, Lor'themar was skeptical, finding the tales of Dark Rangers hard to believe, and suspecting the Alliance just wanted their spymaster back. However, he ultimately supported the meeting with the Alliance.
When Talanji needed support from the Horde against her enemies in Zandalar, Lor'themar joined the other Horde council members in offering aid. He sailed to Zandalar with a Blood Elf fleet and took part in the battle against Nathanos Blightcaller and the troll Apari, who had organized a rebellion against Talanji. The battle was won by the Horde, though Nathanos managed to escape.
