Early Life
When Zekhan was young, his father taught him to "keep ya hands busy and ya mind sharp, and ya will never want for work nor amusement". Zekhan has lived by these words every since.
Zekhan and the Old Soldier
, also popularly known as "Zappy Boi" by the WoW community due to his lightning abilities displayed during the Battle for Lordaeron, is the son of a troll shaman named Hekazi who fought beside Varok Saurfang in the Third War.In the Old Soldier cinematic (which you can watch directly below), Saurfang can be found standing on the roof of Lordaeron's ruins, reminiscing the loss of his son and the destruction of Teldrassil.
greets Saurfang with "Oh.. Lord Saurfang!,", lights the fire behind Saurfang with a lightning spell similar to the one that gave him the nickname "Zappy Boi" in the opening Battle for Azeroth cinematic, and asks Saurfang for advice. The Battle for Lordaeron will be the first war the young troll fights in, but the only advice he's able to get out of Saurfang is "don't die". After Saurfang takes off his armor, he starts heading towards the battlefield to take on the Alliance by himself; however, before he is able to reach the front lines,
quickly catches up to him and hands him the necklace of his deceased son Dranosh that he had left behind. Similar to how he lit the fire at the beginning of the cinematic,
was able to light the fire in Saurfang's heart, inspiring him to take on the Alliance with the rest of the Horde rather than by himself.
The Old Soldier Cinematic
The Battle for Lordaeron
In Battle For Azeroth's opening cinematic,
can be found fighting alongside the Horde in his first war: The Battle for Lordaeron. This was
's first appearance in the game, but he did not have a name until the Old Soldier cinematic was later released.

Patch 8.1: Tides of Vengeance
In Patch 8.1 (Tides of Vengeance),
aids Saurfang
by fighting off the Horde who were sent to either capture or kill him for siding with the Alliance. During the Horde war campaign in 8.1,
approaches the player and asks for their help retracing Saurfang's steps and bringing him back into the ranks of the Horde. After some battles against Warchief Sylvanas’ soldiers, Saurfang insists that the troll and the player return back to the Horde without him so Sylvanas doesn’t exile them as traitors — associating them with the traitorous orc.

Player Choice Within the Saurfang Questline
In the
news post about player choice during the Horde questline
, we learn that players will be given the chance to choose between helping Saurfang by taking
's quest
or siding with Sylvanas. If you choose to side with Sylvanas, you will not receive the
toy at the end of the questline, but other rewards may become available as the story of Battle For Azeroth advances. Thanks to
For the Queen
, the quest for Sylvanas loyalists, we know that Sylvanas has special plans for Zekhan should she get him in her hands.
Zekhan and the Search for Saurfang
In
, we head to Swamp of Sorrows in search of Saurfang.
Dark Ranger Lyana says: I must report back to the warchief. You are to take no further action until you hear from me again. Undersood?
Zekhan says: Ey mon, over here! I be needin' your help!
Zekhan says: Saurfang's hidin' out at a small farm nearby. We best be gettin' dere before dey do!
After we reach Saurfang's farm in Swamp of Sorrows, we see it cornered by Dark Rangers - They beat us there! Looks like Sylvanas' plan was not to uncover Saurfang, but to kill him. On
, we defend Saurfang against the rangers.
Dark Ranger Lyana says: Varok Saurfang! You are guilty of treason against the Dark Lady. Exit the hut or I will burn it down... like that tree your Alliance friends loved so dearly.
Zekhan says: Ya ain't got a shred of honor between ya! How ya gonna turn ya backs on Saurfang, after all he's done for da Horde?
Dark Ranger Lyana says: Champion, you and that troll need to stay out of this. My orders come from the Warchief herself!
Varok Saurfang says: And what orders might those be?
Dark Ranger Lyana says: You turned your back on your duty to the Horde, Saurfang.
Dark Ranger Lyana says: And worse, after you abandoned your people, you conspired with humans against your warchief.
Dark Ranger Lyana says: You will throw down your weapon at once and come with us.
Dark Ranger Lyana says: Or you will die here, in the swamp, alone.
Zekhan says: Not alone!
Varok Saurfang says: I see you still have not learned to fear impossible odds, my young friend. It is an honor to stand at your side.
Varok Saurfang says: Enough of your prattling, dark ranger! If you came seeking a fight, you shall have it!
Varok Saurfang says: For the honor of the Horde! Lok-tar ogar!
Dark Ranger Lyana yells: Kill the traitor--and all who stand with him!
After the battle:
Zekhan says: Ey! We did it, mon! What a battle! You see all dem sparks I be shootin?
After we defeat the Dark Rangers, Saurfang concocts a plan: You need to convince Sylvanas that you faced Saurfang and lost, and on
, Saurfang strikes a
on you. Sylvanas does not seem to believe this, but lets it slide anyway.
Varok Saurfang says: If you are to remain in the Banshee's favor, she needs to believe that I defeated you. But it has to look like you put up a good fight.
Varok Saurfang says: Ready? Take a deep breath. I fear I lack practice in pulling my punches.
Varok Saurfang says: Ah, good. You are still alive. Bruised... but alive.
Varok Saurfang says: Return to the Banshee Queen. Tell her that I will be no one's pawn.
Varok Saurfang says: Zekhan, I need you to remain in Orgrimmar. Let those who wish to restore the honor of the Horde know that they must not give up hope.
Zekhan says: No way, mon. I'm comin' with ya! Where da high overlord go, I go.
Varok Saurfang says: Not today, my friend. This path I must travel alone.
Varok Saurfang says: Go with honor. You will see me again.
Zekhan says: We betta'. We be countin' on ya.
Zekhan says: Okay, hero. We best get back ta Orgrimmar... before more enemies show up!
After turning in Queen's Favor:
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner says: Let me see if I have this right... Saurfang single-handedly slew my elite forces and a veteran dark ranger?
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner says: How fortunate that you escaped with little more than a bruise. Fortunate... but disappointing.
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner says: Let me be perfectly clear. You will find the traitor Saurfang. You will deliver him to me. And you will not fail me again.
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner says: Now go. Remember your duty to the Horde. We have a war to win.

Patch 8.2.5
Partly thanks to Zekhan, Varok Saurfang's plan to start a revolution comes to full fruition. Eventually, the Horde leaders together with Anduin reach the gates of Orgrimmar to confront Sylvanas Windrunner. To protect the remaining Horde members inside the capital, Varok decides to challenge Sylvanas to a Mak'gora, and that turns into one of the most monumental duels in the history of Warcraft:
Zekhan fails to try to intervene, and Varok Saurfang finally finds honorable death in the duel against Sylvanas.
With Varok's funeral and the end of the war campaign, Zekhan plans to honor Saurfang's heritage by staying in Orgrimmar,
telling heroic stories about his role model
. Thankfully, Varok's end doesn't finish Zekhan's storyline;
in 8.3, he will play a part in the Horrific Visions of Orgrimmar (beware of spoilers!)
.
Shadows Rising
After Sylvanas abandons the Horde, the decision is made to form a Horde Council rather than elect a new Warchief. Zekhan becomes page to Thrall, who serves on this council.
During a visit from Queen Talanji of the Zandalari Trolls, Zekhan, who finds the queen beautiful, helps prevent an assassination attempt against her when something shoves him forward, causing him to crash into a servant and spill the poisoned wine they were carrying. Zekhan realizes the wine is poisoned as he sees the stain it makes on Talanji's dress, and throws himself between the assassin and the queen as the assassin draws a dagger. Thrall kills the assassin, a Zandalari Troll, and as they die, Zekhan hears them say "She will know our bite" the words of rebels from Talanji's kingdom. Zekhan is congratulated for saving Talanji's life, but he reflects that he was pushed, and wonders who pushed him.
Talanji's visit to the Horde was to request the Council to assist her in her desire to get revenge against the Alliance for the death of her father. The Horde Council is ultimately unwilling to give into her demands, as open hostility would risk the recently signed armistice with the Alliance. They vow that they will support Talanji in her rule in Zandalar but not in her desire for revenge. Talanji is angered by this, and leaves for her kingdom. Concerned by the increasing tensions with the Zandalari leader, the Horde Council decide to send an ambassador to Zandalar. Zekhan is chosen for this role.
Zekhan is nervous when he is summoned before the Council, and when they tell him they're making him ambassador, he thinks it's a joke at first, and requires some convincing. Thrall points out that Talanji is more likely to be kindly disposed towards him because he risked his life to save her. He also mentions that Zekhan's youth and inexperience will be an asset, as Talanji is likely to underestimate him. First Arcanist Thalyssra explains that he will be expected to report to the Horde Council on Talanji and on the city of Dazar'alor. Zekhan is uncomfortable with this, and asks if it's OK to spy on allies. Rokhan, leader of the Darkspear Trolls, responds that they are not sending him to do any harm, just to bring them information to make it easier to help her. Zekhan is convinced that the Horde Council really does mean no harm, and accepts the duty.
Afterwards, Thrall encourages Zekhan further, reminding him that Saurfang always saw something in him. Rokhan gifts Zekhan with one of his own daggers, telling him that he will never know when he needs it.
When Zekhan arrives in Dazar'alor, he speaks nervously at first. He introduces himself as the new ambassador, and General Rakera interjects, calling him a spy. Zekhan decides to be honest, and agrees that he is, indeed, a spy as well, claiming that the Horde has no intention of giving up on Talanji. Talanji accepts his presence, stating only that they could have sent worse.
As Talanji shows Zekhan the palace, they speak a little of the difference in their upbringing. Zekhan describes the Echo Isles, and how different those islands are to this grand city. Talanji seems amused by his descriptions, but is distracted when they approach the hall where her father died. She speaks angrily about the Alliance, and about Jaina Proudmoore in particular. Though he is nervous, Zekhan speaks up in Jaina's defense, arguing that people change, and pointing out her role in rescuing Baine and fighting against Azshara. Talanji asks Zekhan if he will bring a report of her grief to the Horde, and he responds that he will not, as her grief is her own. He tells her that he's lost two fathers, and when she questions what that means, tells her about Saurfang. He regrets Suarfang's death and wonders if the old Orc is at peace, even asking if Talanji could ask Bwonsamdi, the Loa of Death, about it, as he is her Loa. At the end of this conversation, Talanji concedes that Zekhan is smarter than he looks.
Shortly after, rebels attack the palace, and Zekhan stands with Talanji to help protect her. While he's fighting, Bwonsamdi appears, distracting an assassin just long enough for Zekhan to finish him off. Once the rebels are dealt with and Talanji has departed to speak with her council, Bwonsamdi appears again, calling Zekhan "little zappy boy". After some initial shock, Zekhan asks what Bwonsamdi wants from him, and the Loa replies that he wants to thank him for protecting his "investment" - Talanji. Zekhan replies that he was just at the right place and the right time, but Bwonsamdi says that's how everyone gets power. Zekhan doesn't want power, but he is worried about Talanji, and Bwonsamdi agrees that a sickness is in her kingdom.
Bwonsamdi offers Zekhan a deal: He will give Zekhan a vision of death, and in return, Zekhan must convince Talanji to properly rejoin the Horde. Bwonsamdi believes that the Horde will be important in helping to protect her from the threats she faces. Zekhan agrees, and in return Bwomsamdi shows him a vision of Saurfang, happy in an afterlife with his wife and children. (Zekhan doesn't know this at the time, but the vision is false - like anyone who died after a certain time, Saurfang's soul is in the Maw)
Zekhan continues to serve as ambassador, sending messages to the Horde Council when necessary, and continuously pressuring Talanji to join the Horde Council. The rebels, who are being assisted by Nathanos Blightcaller, become more and more of a danger to Talanji, destroying Bwonsamdi's shrines and eventually attacking the Necropolis in an attempt to cut off her access to her loa's power. In a meeting where Talanji is planning to send her own forces to face the rebels, Zekhan speaks up, entreating her to call on the Horde for help. His words are enough to cause Talanji's council to at least consider them, though the meeting breaks up before any real decision is made. Zekhan is disheartened, thinking he did badly, but he cheers up when Bwonsamdi tells him he did well. A compliment from a loa is not something easily ignored.
Talanji ultimately decides to agree to accept Horde help, but she cannot wait for them. She sends some of her own soldiers to the shrines, and Zekhan volunteers to go with them, stating that while he serves the Horde, he serves Talanji as well.
During a skirmish with some of the rebel Trolls, Zekhan sees that they have captured children, and risks his life to save them, though he realizes it's a trap. In fact, he gives his life to save them, and is overtaken by flames - while the children get to safety, Zekhan is burned to death.
Zekhan's soul begins to travel to the Maw, and he catches a glimpse of that hellish realm. Bwonsamdi, however, intervenes, saving the Troll before his soul can entirely cross over. He accuses Bwonsamdi of lying about what awaits in the afterlife, and Bwonsamdi explains to him and Talanji about the Maw, and that it's been consuming almost all souls lately. Bwonsamdi has been saving as many as he can, sending them to his own realm instead, but he can only do so much.
Talanji is greatly shaken by Zekhan's injury, even feeling like she's failed him. After a sleepless night beside Zekhan's sickbed, she resolves to attack the Necropolis, alone, as the Horde's reinforcements have not yet arrived, However, the Horde reinforcements do arrive in time. Talanji fights in part for Zekhan, and together the rebels are defeated.
Talanji agrees to join the Horde Council. As Zekhan is preparing to depart for home, she asks him how she can thank him. Zekhan tells her with a kiss, but then winces and tells her better not as he is still too burned for physical contact. He also tells the Troll ambassador Talanji sends with him, Tayo, that he's handsome underneath his bandages - or at least will be once his hair grows back.
