Changes for Mages in Burning Crusade
Changes to existing abilities & talents
寒冰屏障
—You become encased in a block of ice, protecting you from all physical attacks and spells for 10 sec, but during that time you cannot attack, move or cast spells. Also causes Hypothermia, preventing you from recasting Ice Block for 30 sec.

—Ice shards pelt the target area doing 1472 Frost damage over 8 sec.

—Reduces the mana cost and chance targets resist your Frost and Fire spells by 3%.

—Counters the enemy's spellcast, preventing any spell from that school of magic from being cast for 8 sec. Generates a high amount of threat.

—Increases your total Intellect by 15%.

—Gives your Fire spells a 70% chance to not lose casting time when you take damage and reduces the threat caused by your Fire spells by 10%.

—Reduces the mana cost of your Frost spells by 15% and reduces the threat caused by your Frost spells by 10%.
There are a few key changes to existing Mage spells in The Burning Crusade. The first one is

which has received a ton of changes. It is no longer a Frost talent so every spec can use it, but it now causes a debuff which means you can only ice block once every 30 seconds. Another big change in the Frost tree also comes in the form of

, which has been reduced from 2% per point to 1%, meaning Mages will need to find a touch more hit on gear.
One of the biggest changes, however, is the introduction of an "AoE cap" - this means that area of effect spells, like

, now have a limit as to how much damage they can do. This essentially means the end of massive pulls for Mages, as there's only so much damage we can do now and pulling too many mobs will just make it very inefficient, if not impossible to kill.
Then, there are two more notable changes,

now increases Intellect, instead of Mana. This is a pretty strong change, as Intellect now converts partly into Spell Power for Arcane Mages, so you still get the benefit of more Mana, as well as more Spell Power. Meanwhile,

and

both saw a change in threat reduction, dropping from 30% to 10% at max rank - this is likely due to tanks being able to hold aggro better, but the talents still serve the same purpose.
Finally, a smaller change means that

's spell lock only lasts eight seconds in TBC, from 10 in Classic.
New abilities & talents

—Steals a beneficial magic effect from the target. This effect lasts a maximum of 2 min.

—Fades the caster to invisibility over 5 sec, reducing threat each second. The effect is cancelled if you perform or receive any actions. While invisible, you can only see other invisible targets and those whom can see invisible. Lasts 20 sec.
奥术冲击
—Blasts the target with energy, dealing 668 to 772 Arcane damage. Each time you cast Arcane Blast, the casting time is reduced while mana cost is increased. Effect stacks up to 3 times and lasts 8 sec.
冰枪术
—Deals 173 to 200 Frost damage to an enemy target. Causes triple damage against Frozen targets.
熔岩护甲
—Causes 75 Fire damage when hit, increases your chance to critically hit with spells by 3%, and reduces the chance you are critically hit by 5%. Only one type of Armor spell can be active on the Mage at any time. Lasts 30 min.
冰冷血脉
—Hastens your spellcasting, increasing spell casting speed by 20% and gives you 100% chance to avoid interruption caused by damage while casting. Lasts 20 sec.
龙息术
—Targets in a cone in front of the caster take 680 to 790 Fire damage and are Disoriented for 3 sec. Any direct damaging attack will revive targets. Turns off your attack when used.

—Summon a Water Elemental to fight for the caster for 45 sec.
减速
—Reduces target's movement speed by 50%, increases the time between ranged attacks by 50% and increases casting time by 50%. Lasts 15 sec. Slow can only affect one target at a time.

—Begins a ritual that creates a refreshment table. Raid members can click the table to acquire Conjured Manna Biscuits. The tables lasts for 3 min or 50 charges. Requires the caster and 2 additional party members to complete the ritual. In order to participate, all players must right-click the refreshment portal and not move until the ritual is complete.

—Conjures a mana emerald that can be used to instantly restore 2340 to 2460 mana. 3 charges. Conjured items disappear if logged out for more than 15 minutes.
There are a slew of new abilities and talents for Mages and all of them are very good. The main things to look at are - a powerful new Arcane damage spell which enables Arcane Mage to actually be a viable spec in TBC Classic. - a powerful new armor spell that increases crit chance by 3% - it's likely the one you'll be using all expansion! Also, is a great new tool (mostly in PvP) that allows Mages to do some insane burst while being mobile.
We also see the addition of some great new utility spells like which can be used to leave combat and avoid fights.

is an all round amazing tool, allowing Mages to steal beneficial effects, this plays a massive role in PvP, as you can, for example, steal

before burning someone down, it also comes in handy for PvE and is crucial in the

, both of which are great quality of life tools. You can finally make a refreshments table rather than having to individually trade your group, and the newest mana gem comes with three charges!
Last but not least Mages also receive three cool new spells, one for each talent tree.

are the new talent spells and while they are interesting and unique, sadly they have little use outside of PvP. Slow focuses on control and while it does fit an Arcane Mage theme, it doesn't have use in PvE and Arcane is not a strong PvP spec, Dragon's Breath suffers the same fate, with it's damage not being enough to be worth taking in PvE. However, Water Elemental is useful in both PvE and PvP, but Frost is the weakest PvE spec, so you'll only be summoning elementals as a control tool in Battlegrounds and Arenas.
Viability of Mages in Burning Crusade PvE Content
Mages are a top tier pick in The Burning Crusade. The class provides some of the highest damage in the game, as well as a massive amount of utility - you can't go wrong with having one (or multiple) in a group or raid. Over the entire expansion, they only slightly fall behind to the highest damage classes (Warlocks and Hunters), but more than make up for it with other tools.
Mages provide some of the most useful utility in the game, from being able to control mobs with

to granting extra Intelligence with

, and of course supplying the raid with food and water, which has been buffed to be an all in one package in TBC with

! The expansion also gives Mages a fancy new trick in

When it comes to damages, Mages excel in both single target and AoE fights. The damage output is strong all throughout a fight, although Mages really shine in their burst phases by combining

together with their trinkets of choice. Using this during bloodlust or heroism and drums provided by a group member is a mage's bread and butter for dps.
They also have multiple strong spells like

so, if there’s a group of mobs, Mage’s are one of the best classes to call to take them down.
Strengths of Mages in Burning Crusade
Very High Single Target and AoE Damage
Mages have some of the highest damage in the game and will always be useful for both single target and AoE fights. At first, Arcane Mage is the best spec and enemies absolutely melt thanks to

. These two abilities combined with the plethora of crit, int and spell power modifiers in the arcane tree lead to insane burst phases.
They also have access to powerful AoE, with a ton of different options like pre-cast

, providing very strong damage to enemies in an area. Ideally you'll be mostly casting

for most of the AoE fights due to low threat from

Great Control and Utility
Mages come equipped with some of the best control and utility spells in the game.

can take care of a large amount of mobs in the game, making dungeon and raid trash pulls significantly easier. Meanwhile, a Mage's party will never have to wait for Mana to regen, with

which benefits any Mana user in a Mage's group.
Strong AoE Farming
Despite the introduction of the 'AoE cap' and a nerf to Mage's AoE farming abilities, the class is still one of the strongest in the game at killing large groups of monsters. With

any melee mobs can still be kited and taken down in numbers, it may just be a bit slower than in Classic.
Weaknesses of Mages in Burning Crusade
Gear Dependent
Mage has always been a quite gear dependent class and this doesn't change in TBC Classic. There is a bit less of a need for crit in the expansion as Fire takes a more Spell Power route, however, getting the right gear for a Mage can be tough.
This is especially the case for Arcane Mages, which are practically not worth playing until you can pick up two pieces of the

, which increases the damage of Arcane Blast by 20%.
Mana Hungry
This has always been an issue for Fire Mages and will continue to be so in The Burning Crusade. Mage spells simple cost a lot of mana and as a Mage you'll spend a ton of time drinking, casting

, and eating

The problem intensifies when it comes to Arcane, as

as a increased mana cost after each cast (up to 3 stacks) and you'll be running out of mana very quickly while spamming this spell. This goes so far that some of the top guilds even reserve

s for their Mages.
Very Squishy
Much like in Classic, Mages are very squishy in TBC. Sure, there are armor spells, shields, and even Ice Block, but when it comes down to it, getting hit hurts. This means that as a Mage positioning and taking smart fights is key, so you'll always need to stay on top of your game to stay alive.
Class Mechanics for Mages in Burning Crusade
Mana
Mages make use of Mana to power their spells. The amount of Mana available to a Mage depends on their level and their Intellect, the higher the level and Intellect, the higher the total Mana pool.
Mana regenerates over time, both in and out of combat. However, regeneration can be interrupted through spell casting. At the start of a spell cast, Mana regeneration is suspended for five seconds, this is known as the “five-second rule”. Sometimes, players will choose to avoid casting spells to regenerate Mana at a faster rate, especially while leveling. Note: spells that do not cost mana do not interrupt mana regeneration.
Mana regeneration can be increased with Spells, Spirit or items that give additional Mana regeneration, known as Mana per 5. Additionally, potions and various other items can be used to restore a set amount of mana instantly.

Alliance
The best race for Alliance Mages in Burning Crusade is

. This comes down to the

passive, which provides an extra 5% intelligence. Considering Mage's are mana hungry, this comes as a massive boost as intelligence increases total mana pool, it also provides some extra crit chance, which is a direct increase to damage.
Gnome's also have access to

, which is an amazing class skill that allows Mages to get out of sticky situations, and can be useful in both PvE and PvP.

are also a solid choice thanks to the very useful 1% hit buff given by

-- although as this applies to the entire party, the ideal scenario is to play a Gnome Mage with a Draenei in your group.
Horde
For Horde, the best race is split into PvE and PvP. For PvE players, the best Horde Mage race is

. This is mainly because of the

racial ability, which provides a very strong increase to casting speed. Although, in reality the other Mage races just don't give any useful bonuses for PvE.
When it comes to PvP,

take the cake. This time it's due to a very strong racial skill,

. WotF provides a very strong CC removing cooldown, which is especially important when playing against Warlocks, who are one of the better PvP classes in TBC.
Alliance Races for Mages in Burning Crusade

: Expertise with Maces and Two-Handed Maces increased by 5.

Humans have minimal benefits for Mages. The essential advantage of playing as a Human is the

racial, which reduces the amount of time investment required for raising reputations. The

will slightly boost Mana Regeneration but is not massively helpful, while

is only useful when looking for Stealthed Rogues and Prowling Druids in PVP.
As a Mage, you will never need to make use of your melee weapon, so the weapon specialization racials are useless.

: Arcane Resistance increased by 10.

: Intelligence increased by 5%.

: Engineering skill increased by 15.

: Escape the effects of any immobilization or movement speed reduction effect.
Gnomes are the best of the three races for both PvE and PvP. The

racial will provide a boost to your total Mana and damage. Meanwhile,

is an amazing tool to have access to in PvP, allowing you to escape from immobilizing effects such as

The main benefit of Draenei for Mages is the

racial. Even 1% is a lot of hit and having the buff will allow you to spent talent points or gear into more damage instead of hit. However, as the racial affects a whole party, it's best to leave Draenei to Shaman's, if you want to min-max.
Horde Races for Mages in Burning Crusade

: When activated, regenerates 7% of total health every 2 sec for 10 sec. Only works on Humanoid or Undead corpses within 5 yds. Any movement, action, or damage taken while Cannibalizing will cancel the effect.

: Shadow Resistance increased by 10.

: Underwater breath lasts 300% longer than normal.

Undead mainly benefit Mages in PvP. The

The key benefit of picking a Troll is the

racial. This passive provides a substantial damage boost, especially when low on health. This doesn’t happen very often, however, as you are liable to die quickly if left on low health, especially in raids.
The other passives are relatively insignificant.

Specializations for Mage in Burning Crusade
The Mage class features three different specializations: Arcane, Fire, and Frost. In TBC Classic, all three of these are actually very good. Arcane and Fire are both very strong in PvE and provide unique advantages, while Frost is the go-to spec for PvP as it provides a ton of control and survivability.
Arcane Mage
Arcane finally get's its own identity in TBC, with

becoming a focal point of this spec. Essentially, Arcane revolves around putting out heavy damage with Arcane Blasts and managing Mana enough to avoid running out before a fight ends. It's best suited for end-game raids, as the

is incredibly powerful, as it provides a massive 20% increase to Arcane Blast's damage.
A key benefit of the spec is the

talent, which lowers the hit requirement on gear by a ton. This means Arcane Mages can focus almost entirely on damage gear and are one of the best performing DPS classes overall. That combined with

gives arcane mages leeway to burst high amount of damage straight from the get-go of boss pulls without worrying too much about threat.
Fire Mage
Fire falls of significantly in TBC, and is now one of the weakest PvE specs. Fire Mages are still capable of pumping okay burst damage during execute phases, but also have a general increase in damage thanks to the new

talent.
All this means that as a Fire Mage you'll still be spamming Fireballs, especially once a target is below 20% Health. If this spec is to your liking more than the enjoyment you get from dps'ing, feel free to play it. If you actually intend to perform the best you can - I recommend against it.
Frost Mage
Frost Mage is the all out PvP spec for Mages. It's not really used in PvE at all, as Arcane is a great starter spec for Mages. Instead, Frost focuses fully on control in PvP, with an exciting extra bit of burst and control added thanks to
冰枪术
and
召唤水元素
.
Hitting targets with a
冰霜新星
and being able to Ice Lance them while on the move provides a ton of extra gameplay possibilities to the class. The Water Elemental also offers an extra Frost Nova, which makes it very tough for melee to ever close in on a Mage in PvP.
Best PvE Spec for Mage in Burning Crusade
Arcane is absolutely the top-level spec for Mages in TBC, especially once they get their

two-set bonus. It's a very strong spec and the damage difference between it and Fire are insanely high upwards of 500-600 at top-end with full support for fire. A key thing to note, though, without proper mana support from

, and a shadow priest's

feels somewhat awkward. Even if lacking these support abilities arcane is still better than the two other options.
This spec is also cheaper and easier to gear since int gems tend to be a lot cheaper than spellpower gems as there's less competition for yellow gems than there is for red ones. Arcane focuses a lot of intelect gear which most of the other casters avoid, instead focusing on spellpower and more offensive stats. Meaning there's not much competition on some key arcane mage items.
Best Professions for Mage in Burning Crusade
Engineering
Engineering is quite honestly absolutely broken in TBC and basically a must have for any Mage who wants to do well. It allows you to use

all of which will be a significant portion of your overall raid dps. If you're gearing up you can also craft

which is really good for PVP as well as equivelent in performance to

Enchanting
The second profession for Mages has a great impact and is borderline mandatory for most of this expansion. TBC adds an enchant for Enchanters only,

. This gives a 24 spell power boost that is otherwise unobtainable.
This is really good, especially when you compare it to the other options that barely provide anything past the initial part of the game.
