Arena Role for Mage in Burning Crusade Classic
Mages continue to play a control and damage role in PvP with TBC Classic. As always, the class is a master of controlling their opponents through a variety of tools, and this has been further improved with some great new spells in Burning Crusade.
As a Mage, you still have the classic tools like
冰霜新星
,

, and

to be able to counteract practically anything your opponents can do, but you also gain access to

for extra damage and control, as well as

which is particularly effective against classes which use buffs, especially Disc Priests.
When it comes to damage, one key tool has been added in TBC.

is an amazing spell that can be used to burst down frozen opponents, be it from your Frost Nova, Frostbite procs, or even your elementals nova.
Arena Viability for Mage in Burning Crusade Classic
Mages excel in arena. Their combo of control, utility, survivability, and damage is practically unmatched and as such a Mage is a top pick for players looking to play arenas. Mages are especially strong in 2v2 and 3v3 arena matches and some of the best compositions possible (like Rogue, Mage or Rogue, Mage, Priest) feature a Mage.
As a Mage you can counter just about everything thrown at you, be it burst with
寒冰屏障
and
寒冰护体
, tough spells with Counterspell, melee attackers with Frost Nova and Frostbolt slows, or even just purely shutdown a target with an unanswerable Polymorph.
Thanks to things like
碎冰
, you're also able to quickly pull out a ton of damage, combining it with a
寒冰箭
,
冰枪术
, or even other instant cast spells. Overall, Mages are practically an entire package and other than no healing have few weaknesses.
Strengths in Arena for Mage in Burning Crusade Classic
Incredible Control
Mages have some of the strongest control tools in the game. They're able to shut down just about any class and excel at slowing and stopping movement. Between
变形术
,
冰霜新星
,

and a ton of other slows, moving at normal speed against a Mage is almost impossible.
Mages are also able to set up great CC chains, combining
变形术
with their teammates stuns to disable a target for a long duration.
Strong Burst Damage
Mages have some of the strongest burst damage possible in PvP. This is mainly due to
碎冰
which practically guarantees a critical hit against frozen targets. You can also this effect with
寒冰箭
and
冰枪术
to instantly deal masses of damage.
The class also has a ton of other strong spells in it's arsenal, allowing Mages to put out a ton of damage.
奥术飞弹
, for example, ignores line of sight after the initial cast and can be used to finish off enemies trying to hide behind a pillar.
Survivability
Despite being cloth wearers with a (relatively) low HP pool, Mages are actually one of the tougher classes to kill. You have a lot of very useful defensive tools, most notably with
寒冰屏障
saving you from damage for up to 10 seconds and
寒冰护体
providing a powerful shield. You can even use
急速冷却
to reset the cooldown on these if you really get into trouble.
Then, Mages also have
闪现术
which can not only get you away from danger, but also removes and stuns and roots when used. This is a great tool for getting out of trouble, making you very difficult to pin down.
Weaknesses in Arena for Mage in Burning Crusade Classic
No Healing
Mages have no way to heal themselves or others (outside of First Aid). This is an obvious weakness as even the best player in the world will end up taking damage. This means as a Mage you'll either have to play with a healer on your team, or be extra careful to avoid taking damage.
It also means when facing certain matchups without a healer, such as Warrior and Resto Druid in 2v2, the game can become somewhat of a race. You have to kill one of your two opponents fairly quickly, or they will be able to outlast and slowly wear you down.
Dispels
A Mage lives and dies by spells. This means that Dispels, and Priests specifically, are one of Mage's biggest weaknesses. Dispels can absolutely ruin a Mages life, be it dispelling beneficial buffs like
寒冰护体
and
寒冰屏障
or removing things like
变形术
,
冰霜新星
, or other freezes and slows from your targets.
There's not much you can do to counter dispels and you'll always have to respect that the slow/freeze/poly can be removed by a dispel.
Cooldown Dependent
Mages are fairly cooldown dependent, especially when it comes to defense.

all have fairly long cooldowns and are very important for a Mage to use correctly.
For example, Blink is a great tool for creating distance, but without it you are very vulnerable for 15 seconds. If you Blink too early or don't have Blink available, you are very susceptible to stuns and being locked down and killed. Sure, you can Ice Block, but then that's gone for 5 minutes and you'll be in the same trouble again. It can be tricky to manage cooldowns as they're crucial for Mages.
Best Arena Talent Build for Mage in Burning Crusade Classic
Standard Frost 17/0/44 Mage DPS Talent Build
This is the standard Frost PvP spec for Mages. The core focus of this is survival and control, which is something Frost excels in. It is a very adjustable build and you can easily take talents in and out depending on personal preference, or to suit a specific opponent.
However in this build we focus on overall control, with things like
强化冰霜新星
and
极寒冰霜
making life tough for melee, while
强化法术反制
can really shut down a spellcaster. Then there's also
寒冰护体
and
奥术坚韧
to increase survivability, it's really just a great all rounder.
Preparation Room for Mage in Burning Crusade Classic
The preparation room is quite important for Mages, you have a ton of buffs you need to set up, as well as creating Mana Emeralds and refreshments before each fight. Here's a list of everything you should do in the arena prep room:

Rogue / Mage is one of the most powerful team compositions in the 2's bracket, because of how strong both classes are. Both Rogues and Mages have potent crowd control abilities such as

Both Rogue and Mage also have the ability to quickly swap targets and pump out major burst damage. Mages have the ability to control when a

and using the Pet's Freeze. On top of that burst damage, the Mage has the ability to use

to take away protective buffs from the target, such as

A Healing class can easily be swapped to once a Trinket has been burned from getting out of a Sap, Blind, or Polymorph. Once the Rogue swaps to the Healer and begins stacking

, if a five point Kidney Shot connects to the Healer without any defensive cooldowns, that Healer can die in 1 Shatter combo from the Mage. Because of this massive burst, swap potential, and potent crowd control, the Rogue / Mage composition is extremely dangerous in 2's.

Mage / Disc Priest is another solid, but weaker, 2v2 comp. It focuses more on sustain, with the Priest offering healing,

, and Priest heals, neither of you should really be dying. However, there is somewhat of a lack of damage and in most matchups, your chance of winning comes from cooldown windows.

, and other cooldowns as well as some damage support from the Priest.
3v3 Arena Teams for Mage in Burning Crusade Classic

Rogue / Mage / Disc Priest (RMP) is one of the most popular and arguably the best 3v3 comp out there. It's also one of the most difficult ones to play, as there are constantly multiple moving pieces and setting up strong plays takes a lot of communication and strong gameplay fundamentals.
It plays as an extensions of Rogue / Mage, where the comp is based around control and setting up kills with a mass of CC. This means utilizing abilities like

to limit what your opponents can do, then kill off opponents when their healer is unable to react. This can be through either stunning the healer and killing them, or locking down the healer and killing a vulnerable damage dealer. Meanwhile, the Priest can both keep his team alive, while supporting the damage with strong spells like

.
Outside of damage, this comp is also amazing at staying alive. With

Rogue / Mage / Druid is a similar comp to RMP, it focuses on a very similar core, utilizing the Rogue and Mage synergy to control and shut down opponents. However, it replaces the healer with a Resto Druid, which adds a different set of utility to the mix.
The biggest difference between the two is the addition of

. This gives the comp another very strong CC tool, as a target can be disabled for a long time by cyclone, opening up more avenues to focus someone down while disabling their teammates. Druid's are also very mobile and quite tanky due to

, as well as healing over time spells like

for burst healing.
Overall, the comp plays mostly like RMP, but with a few differences. There's less damage reduction for the dps without

. However, the key benefit is that there is less worrying about the healer being killed, as Druids are much tankier and very mobile.

Mage / Shadow Priest / Resto Shaman, aka Shatterplay, is an entirely different comp from the two mentioned before, but is also strong in it's own way. It's a different take on what is a bit of a cult classic in TBC, Shadowplay, as this variation features a Mage instead of a Warlock, but still aims to do similar things.
The biggest benefit of this comp is its massive burst damage. As we know, Mages provide huge damage with their

combo, meanwhile Shadow Priests add a ton of sustained damage with their dots, as well as very strong burst with

and

. Then, there is the Resto Shaman, who can not only add to the burst with

beneficial spells.
The comp also has a solid amount of utility and survivability. We've already covered the Mage portions, but we also get

from the Priest, as well as a myriad of healing and damage reduction from the Shaman, such as

. Then, there are also Shaman totems, which provide a ton of utility, like

Overall, this is a great comp if you're looking to try out something different, especially if you want to use some of the 'off-meta' 3v3 picks like Shadow Priest and Shaman.
