Marksmanship Hunter Strengths and Weaknesses in Torghast
Torghast is fairly easy for Hunters in general. While we may not be the fastest class to complete it, we generally have no issue due to having our pets take the majority of the incoming damage. Typically the only time you'll die as a Hunter is when you pull too big for your pet to handle as we don't really have too many personal defensives to keep ourselves afloat. Our pets are perhaps our biggest strength, along with the amount of burst damage we're able to output. If we do get into trouble, we have
假死
which can be a nice reset, often saving us from death.
Marksmanship Hunters have two main pitfalls during Torghast. First off, the powers that we get are pretty mediocre compared to most other classes. We have a ton of useless traits such as
and the anima powers we do have aren't really exciting or super beneficial. Generally, we opt to go for the generic traits offered to us as they're often better than the Hunter specific ones.
The other major weakness Hunters have is spread cleave, which you'll often encounter in Torghast with caster mobs that refuse to move. We don't really have any method of grouping enemies, so we have to use our utility such as
and
误导
along with utilizing our environment and line-of-sighting enemies to properly group them.
That being said, Hunter is one of the strongest classes in Torghast and generally has little to no issues completing even the highest layers with ease.
Navigating the Twisting Corridors as a Marksmanship Hunter
We have two very different playstyles in Torghast with a few different talent setups depending on what you choose. Below I talk about how to approach Torghast as a Marksmanship Hunter.
Solo Marksmanship Hunter in Torghast
First off, if you're going solo as a Marksmanship Hunter, make sure to be using a pet. We have very little survivability and heavily rely on our pet to tank enemies for us. You'll want to run a tanky pet to survive as much incoming damage as possible. I suggest using either a
or a
, both of which are the tankiest non-exotic pets Marksmanship Hunters have access too (Gorillas have
银背
while Scalehides have
).
Since our pets are our front line, you'll want to pick up a
if possible. Make sure to always
误导
enemies to your pet and maintain
as much as possible. If your pet gets low, don't be afraid to use
to keep it healthy. If your pet happens to die, make use of
假死
and
to quickly revive it.
As a Marksmanship Hunter, we typically can't pull very big unless we gain a couple of traits that help us do so. I don't suggest pulling any bigger than 5-6 mobs, partially due to our target restrictions but also due to how squishy our pet can be (compared to Beast Mastery Hunters at least). The biggest fault that causes deaths as a Marksmanship Hunter is either pulling too big for your pet to handle, or incorrectly grouping up mobs (specifically caster mobs). Our damage is fairly bursty and can kill enemies quickly, but we aren't good at spread cleave so try to group up enemies as much as possible by utilizing line-of-sight or interrupting far enemies. On higher floors, you may even need to use
to isolate dangerous enemies.
Don't forget, we have Bloodlust! Both pets I suggested have access to
. Remember, cooldowns reset every floor in Torghast! don't be afraid to use both Bloodlust and
fairly liberally, especially on harder packs or end floor elites.
Beyond this, Torghast gameplay is similar to Mythic+ in a sense. The spec will feel way better to play, especially once we start getting some anima powers.
Group Delving
Assuming you have a tank in your group, doing group Torghast is identical to our Mythic+ playstyle. We no longer have any need for a pet since we'll have someone tanking for us, so be sure to go with
. Traits such as
and
are very useful in group gameplay.
Similar to Mythic+, be sure to
误导
enemies to your tank to help gather enemies. Barrage may be useful for this if overall damage isn't necessarily needed. With a group, you'll ultimately be dealing with enemies the tank pulls and you'll simply be doing your normal AoE or single target rotations. The mob health and damage scales based on group size and composition so you won't be able to quickly burst down enemies as you can with solo play.
If you're Kyrian, be sure to take anima powers such as
and
to help the group out!
Best Torghast Marksmanship Hunter Talents
You'll actually want to swap between two builds for optimal Torghast performance. The build you will be using for most of Torghast is similar to the build you normally run in Mythic+ and for bosses, you'll be using your typical Raid setup. That being said, there are a few talents that may change which I describe below. Ultimately, talents don't matter too much and will vary depending on how you decide to approach Torghast.
Careful Aim vs Explosive Shot
The difference between
and
is pretty minimal. Generally, you'll stick to Explosive Shot for the earlier floors where trash density is higher and pulls are bigger. As you climb floors and have to pull smaller, Careful Aim will start to take over. You'll generally want to swap to Careful Aim for bosses as well (where you're able to). You may also want to swap to Careful Aim depending on what specific talents you obtain.
for instance has really good synergy. On earlier floors,
even has merit as it can be used to mass
误导
mobs to your pet, however, I don't recommend it, especially with those pesky caster mobs. Ultimately, talent choice in this row matters very little and Torghast can be completed with any depending on your playstyle.
Streamline vs Chimaera Shot vs Steady Focus
All three talents in this row can be used at some point during Torghast. Generally, you'll be sticking to
for the earlier floors with higher mob density. As you climb to higher floors and are forced to pull smaller, you may want to swap to
as Streamline loses value unless you're consistently pulling 4+ mobs. Finally, for bosses, I recommend swapping to
assuming it's a pure single target boss. Once again, the difference in these talents is pretty minimal (although I don't recommend Steady Focus for anything other than bosses).
Volley vs Lock and Load
乱射
is generally the go-to in this row. If you're trying to min/max, swap to
for bosses, otherwise, sticking to Volley the entire time is perfectly fine.
It is worth noting that seven anima powers grant you the following talents:
狩猎大师密文
grants you
grants you
grants you
grants you
grants you
grants you
grants you
Most of these talent-acquisition anima powers are relatively unimpactful and basic quality-of-life picks with the exception of
. Having both
and
can be really good, especially for trash.
Covenant-Specific Information for Marksmanship Hunters in Torghast
Kyrian
Kyrian Marksmanship Hunters gain a slew of powers that buff both
and their Steward! While most of the Steward buffs are simple utility gains such as increased movement speed or more healing from
, the buffs to Resonating Arrow are pretty good.
The two most important Kyrian specific powers in solo play are:
匿踪投掷
- Now causes targets affected by
to suffer 20% additional Arcane damage when struck by a Critical Strike.
- The critical strike chance of
is increased by an additional 25%.
Kyrians also have a couple of unique abilities for group content:
灵魂追踪者之契
- The 30% Critical Strike bonus now applies to the entire party.
- Your Steward now provides
for the entire party.
Overall nothing really changes your playstyle with these powers, but you gain a ton of extra damage. If you're trying to push Torghast as a group, Kyrian is definitely the optimal choice for group gameplay.
Venthyr
Venthyr doesn't really offer much for Marksmanship Hunters, unfortunately.
isn't great for us and most of the Venthyr powers simply buff Flayed Shot such as
or buff the
s such as
. These traits do help for single target scenarios, so they'll be useful for bosses, but they won't really help much for a good chunk of Torghast.
Perhaps the best and most notable Venthyr specific power comes from
causes all enemies you pass through to suffer 20% additional damage. Paired with some other Door of Shadows traits such as
it can be pretty good
Necrolord
Necrolords gain access to a
ridiculously strong
anima power:
. If you're lucky enough to get it, it somewhat makes up for how bad
is in terms of overall damage. The other powers related to Death Chakram are mediocre such as
and
, but paired with Bag of Munitions they can be quite powerful. That being said, it doesn't help much for bosses which are typically the hardest part of the instance.
One of the other cool anima powers Necrolord Hunters have access to is
. This effectively turns each
tick into a bomb. You, quite literally, start channeling in the middle of packs, and watch as they essentially kill themselves on it. Even better: channel Fleshcraft fully, then walk into a boss and watch it detonate. On floors with Mawrats, you can even use
to get a 50% shield (and therefore 100% of your max HP in damage to everything when it breaks). Other traits that bolster your health such as
or
which are typically mediocre, gain a ton of value!
Night Fae
Night Fae have some pretty solid powers that buff
. The traits that buff
are typically just movement speed enhancers with the exception of
which can be pretty beneficial at times. The following two abilities are traits we typically want to aim for:
纯净月光包囊
- Targets that die within Wild Spirits will explode, dealing additional Nature damage to nearby enemies.
- Targets affected with Wild Mark take 25% increased damage from you and your pets.
Both of these make Wild Spirits an insane cooldown, especially in AoE. You'll typically destroy any pack you use Wild Spirits on, even ones with multiple rares. Getting these powers means that you'll want to do some larger pulls centered around your cooldowns (which we should be doing anyway) so nothing really changes in terms of gameplay.
Best Anima Power Builds for Marksmanship Hunters
Unfortunately, Hunters don't really have too many unique "builds" as many other classes do. We typically just go for traits that do a bunch of damage. A good majority of our traits buff our pet's damage (
, and
for example), which unfortunately are fairly useless as Marksmanship considering our pets do a measly ~10% of our overall damage (even less in AoE). Below is our one "build" that we can aim for, along with some other highly desirable traits.
Trap Build
There are quite a few ways you can make this build, but the essence entails buffing your
to either increase damage done to enemies inside of it, or to reduce the damage they do to you. The trick here is properly grouping up enemies. You'll want to make use of line-of-sight tactics, along with interrupting caster mobs and using
to properly position enemies. Once enemies are grouped, simply use a Tar Trap, and depending on which anima powers you've picked up, enemies should fall over pretty quickly.
The two most important pieces to this build are
and some combination of
or
. If you're worried about controlling the enemies a bit more, you can invest in traits such as
and
or even
(which is amazing for grouping enemies as well as pure survival). To get more damage traits, go for
which annihilates enemies and is by far one of our best traits, period. Finally, you can get some other cool traits such as
which synergizes really well with this build.
Best Traits to Go For
As I mentioned earlier, Marksmanship Hunters don't really have too many "builds" to aim for. We typically just build as many powerful generic traits, along with some of our covenant specific traits. Below are some really good generic traits to get if they happen to pop up (in no particular order).

Now that Twisting Corridors are out, I wanted to share my own
solo
tips about Torghast here.
I'm currently a 210 MM Hunter with the
Venthyr
covenant.
The builds I used for my first 4 layers of Twisting Corridors were mainly focused on Kill Shot damage (especially how Kill Shot gains a lot of value as Venthyr) and Tar Trap.
3x
ends up in a 95% slow. This is incredibly useful against any melee mob (including bosses), and even against casters since MM has extra range, you can hit stuff without them hitting you. Combine it with 1x
and 1x
and you got a pretty deadly combination.
1x
should be picked-up whenever possible. If used properly, you can burst anything down in just a few seconds with Aimed Shot/Kill Shot/Explosive Shot and even
.
As many
and
as possible to straight up buff our top damaging spells.
Any Disengage power. The majority aren't strong when used alone, but when you have a few, all combined, it can turn Disengage into something quite amazing.
and
.
As many
as possible. This makes
and the Tar Trap build super strong.
For Venthyrs,
and
. All of those on top of
makes Kill Shot super strong. On last bosses, I was able to throw huge 500k+ Kill Shots.
Any other stats/damage procs powers if none of the above are available. Some self-healing powers can also be used, especially if you lack the Tar Trap ones.
I wasn't using any pet, though one may be good on early levels before you start accumulate good powers. In that case, avoid any powers that affect your pet or Misdirection if you're alone. Make sure to take your time to collect as many powers and phantasma as possible, as well as waiting on CDs to be available before pulling risky packs/bosses.

Completed layer 8 last night on a 209 MM Night Fae hunter.
I will tell you there is a nutty defensive combo you should aim for. You'll want to get 3x Sticky Tar, Bursting Tar and the power that makes it to where only enemies in melee can target you. This combo effectively makes you invincible if you're keeping your enemies trapped and out of casting distance. The Soulforge Ember ability should
not
be a priority. Its damage never scales up and spreading aim shots will kill things much faster. This should be your priority as getting this combo enables you to complete this layer naked, with powers only speeding things up.
Outside of the defensive combo, you're main goal should be burst damage. The main 4 you want to aim for as a night fae: 3x 25% increased damage during wild spirits, 3x 25% increased damage after you put a trap down, 100% crit/crit damage binding shot and lastly, 2x 15% more damage from hunters mark. Prioritize setting up your defense and getting these abilities if you have the choice, even above killshot/aim shot damage buffs.
I would keep my pet(scalehide) next to me on passive, essentially an extra health bar with heroism.
The rotation I used when I pulled large packs/boss's went like this:
Pre Pull - Hunters mark, md pet, double tap, heroism, put a tar trap half way between the boss and myself, pull with binding shot. then immedietly put down wild spirits where the boss gets bound.
After spirits is down, just aim shot whenever available, rapid fire if you can't aim shot. Don't cast too many arcane shots, you'll starve yourself out of aim shots.
All but the final boss of each layer die within the burst. In the event that they don't. thats why we put down the tar trap. Just keep them within the tar trap, if it looks like they're about to get out before you can put down another one, burst shot them back into it.
I was usually able to have my "ultimate defense" by floor 6/7. and globaling boss's the second I got the binding shot abilitiy.
First post here on wowhead. hope I helped :D

Any tips for Kyrian MM hunters on the final boss? I got unlucky not seeing the 2% health per maw rat killed power until level 18 (thanks RNG), but even with relatively low 50k hp, I feel like it shouldn't be so hard to kill at 208 ilvl and decent offensive power synergy given the 3 hour time investment to get there.
Or should I just wait until I get my alt guardian druid up to that part of the quest and go with him?
