Overview of Marksmanship Hunters in Raid
Marksmanship Hunters excel in single target situations, especially on fights like
with extended execute phases. We are also very strong in burst AoE situations with quick add spawns.
allow us to quickly burst down adds on demand. Marksman Hunters also have one of the best single target priority add damage. Between 50% bonus
damage on initial hit,
,
and
, we’re able to quickly and efficiently swap to new targets. While not as good as Beast Mastery Hunters, Marksmanship Hunters have very good mobility and excel in high movement fights, rarely having to sacrifice damage for movement.
Marksmanship’s primary fault is simply our lack of overall damage. While our toolkit is very good for raids, we perform slightly worse than both Survival and Beast Mastery. While not a huge deal, this may discourage some people from playing Marksmanship over the other two specs. Another pitfall that Marksmanship runs into is our talent selection. We must select either very straight forward single target talents or very AoE centric talents. This does not affect us in raids as much as it does in dungeons, and some minor modifications can be made as discussed above, however, it can still be noticeable.
Talent Builds
The below talent setups are recommendations based on beta testing and personal experience and opinions of multiple top Hunters and theorycrafters. They are preliminary and will be updated once the fights are actually released.
Tier 7 (Level 100)
- Calling the Shots is better than Lock and Load as soon as you have 1 or more
traits. Since they are so plentiful, this is assumed as the default trait. If you do not have any of these Azerite traits, take Lock and Load instead.
- Lock and Load can be taken over Calling the Shots if you do not have any
traits. In certain scenarios where you cannot make use of the additional cooldown reduction granted from Calling the Shots or if the boss encounter favors 2 min cooldown timings (such as Vectis in Uldir), Lock and Load may be a better option.
Tier 4 (Level 60)
- Streamline should only be taken in consistent AoE situations. Streamline loses a ton of value in single-target so there has to be enough AoE to warrant the loss in single target. Streamline gains value with one or more traits of
or
.
- Hunter's Mark should be taken for most raid encounters. It is better in single target and mid-range AoE fights. Hunter's Mark starts to lose value at 4 targets, however, it has better priority target damage compared to Streamline which should be taken into consideration. Since Hunter's Mark is on the GCD, it also loses value when consistent add swapping is required (i.e Mythic+).
Tier 6 (Level 90)
- Barrage is only viable in heavy AoE situations or fights with consistent spread AoE. It may be usable in M+ depending on the affixes, however, I highly discourage using it as it will pull unwanted mobs with improper play. Barrage loses a ton of value in pure single target situations. I recommend sticking with Double Tap in almost every situation.
- This is the default talent for both single target and AoE. Unlike Barrage, you do not lose single target value by taking this target. The downside of Double Tap is that you are limited by the target restrictions imposed by
. Luckily, there are very very circumstances with consistent mass AoE so Double Tap is typically always a better choice.
Azerite
Below is a list of desired Azerite traits, specifically useful for Raids. These may very well change with tuning and will be kept up to date so check back often!
Single Target Traits
These are typically desired for Raid.
- While
is active, you gain Critical Strike rating every sec, stacking up to 10 times. Unerring Vision paired with
makes
a very strong cooldown. With 2 or 3 of these traits, we can reach 100% critical strike rating during Trueshot. This trait is by far our best trait in every situation and at least 2 is recommended.
- Your primary stat is increased while you are above 50% health. You take 15% additional damage while below 20% health. This is a very strong trait that gives an immense amount of primary stat. It adds a bit of risk but in most instances, your health will be above 50% health.
- Increases Haste after
finishes channeling. A very strong trait with the reworked Marksman in 8.1. It also syncs up well with our
s, making our windows a bit cleaner. Strong in both single target and in AoE.
or
- Both of these traits are simple single target damaging spells. They are excellent choices for single target situations.
AoE Traits
These are typically desired for Mythic+ or heavy AoE raid fights.
- While
is active, you gain Critical Strike rating every sec, stacking up to 10 times. Unerring Vision paired with
makes
a very strong cooldown. With 2 or 3 of these traits, we can reach 100% critical strike rating during Trueshot. This trait is by far our best trait in every situation and at least 2 is recommended.

- Increases Haste after
finishes channeling. A very strong trait with the reworked Marksman in 8.1. It also syncs up well with our
s, making our windows a bit cleaner. Strong in both single target and in AoE.
- Increases
damage per shot fired.
has a 15% chance to reset the cooldown of
. This trait is decent in single target and is very strong in AoE. I only recommend taking this trait when paired with
.
- Increases
damage. Each shot of Rapid Fire has a chance to refund additional Focus. This trait is decent in single target and is very strong in AoE. I only recommend taking this trait when paired with
.
- Has a chance to deal damage to your target and splash damage in a 3 yard radius. Our highest damage trait in this tier. It is strong in both single target and AoE situations.
- Deals a fair bit of damage throughout the fight and much more often against targets below 30% health. Very good passive execute mechanic which pairs well with
- Has a chance to grant a large amount of Haste, which decays over time or when you take damage. Very good trait for Marksman Hunters since Haste is one of our best stats.
- This is a Marksman specific Tier 3 trait. The shield that it gives us when we
can be used as an on demand defensive. The added cool down reduction to
is another bonus as well, especially in Mythic+.
- This trait works anytime something dies around you. That includes Mythic+ mobs, adds during a raid fight, mobs during open world questing, etc. The heal is a decent amount and procs fairly often which can be very useful.
- This is essentially a mini
shield. Its small, but it negates the damage and is preventative rather than reactionary like most of the other traits.

It is suggested that you use a Pet on this fight, since the fight is primarily single target.
Tips for

If you are in a group that crosses over, you will primarily be killing waves of adds, 2-3 at a time. Adds need to be killed swiftly so I suggest using

Finding your Best Next Upgrade
While it is important to know how your gear should look like at the end of the tier, the next step is almost as important. With that in mind,
Raidbots
have created a tool to allow you to plan for your near future: the
Droptimizer
. The Droptimizer simulates your current gear against every single other piece of gear in a raid or dungeon, showing you which pieces would provide the largest immediate DPS upgrade for you.
That said, it is not a tool focused on finding your best-in-slot items from the new raid. The Droptimizer only looks to one item at a time, finding you which pieces are the largest upgrade, compared to your current gear. With that, the Droptimizer also calculates which bosses offer the best odds in providing you with a strong upgrade.
Note: the Droptimizer ignores Titanforging mechanics
.
Simulate your Character with the Droptimizer
Note that
SimulationCraft
,
Raidbots
, and the Droptimizer are community tools created and maintained by players like you and are only functional for DPS purposes.
Raid Tools and Analyzing Your Performance
There are many ways to getting better at raiding, and while understanding the encounter and your specialization's role within it is one of the most important ones, being able to review your performance will help you better understand what is happening, what went right, and what went wrong.
Logging is a powerful tool which allows you to make a record of everything that happened during an encounter.
WarcraftLogs
uses that record to create analytical charts detailing the positioning, damage dealt and taken, who had which buffs and debuffs, even a full real-time replay of the entire encounter. Check out our full
WarcraftLogs Guide
to see what the number one raiding resource can do for you.
WoWAnalyzer
is more personal. It uses the same WarcraftLogs report to create a detailed analysis of a single player's performance, with less emphasis on what happened during the encounter and more tailored to improving that specific player's rotation, cooldown use, survivability, and role (tanking, healing, damage dealing). Give our
WoWAnalyzer Guide
a read, and find out how it can help you improve.
Raidbots
is a simulation site, which allows you to simulate your character under a variety of conditions, create stat weights, compare gear choices, talents, and much more. It is a web interface for SimulationCraft, a long-running simulation project maintained by prominent community theorycrafters, made even more accessible through the simplicity of Raidbots format and dedicated servers. See our detailed
Raidbots Guide
to learn more.
Deadly Boss Mods
