What are Essences?
Essences are a system of power progression for the Heart of Azeroth introduced in patch 8.2. These legendary-like bonuses are unlocked through pre-determined activities including dungeons, raids, open-world activities, PvP, reputations, and achievements, and come in four ranks: Uncommon, Rare, Epic, and Legendary. The second and third ranks add to or improve the base effect, while the last unlocks a flashy visual. Each Essence has a unique Major and Minor power, which can be socketed into the Heart of Azeroth upon completing a short introductory questline. For more information on available Essences and the drop locations for each rank, see our
Heart of Azeroth Essences Overview Guide
.
Essences may be changed in any rested area, or by using any
type item, but the same Essence cannot be used in multiple sockets, resulting in a total of 1 Major and 4 Minor powers active at any one time. You can pre-plan and preview your Essence setup in our
Essence Calculator
.

Account-Wide Essences for Alts
While Essences have been a chore to unlock on characters until Ny'alotha, Blizzard has introduced a new system in Patch 8.3 to speed up the process of obtaining Essences for subsequent characters: Echoes of Ny'alotha! Most current activities completed, like Mythic+, PvP, or Emissaries will reward a given number of Echoes, which can be traded at MOTHER at the Chamber of Heart for a Rank 3 Essence that you have already unlocked in another toon.

Best Mistweaver Monk Major Essences
While only one Major power can be used at a time, whichever Essence is socketed into the center node of the Heart of Azeroth will also activate its Minor Power, so both effects should be taken into consideration when determining which to use. Below is a short ranking of notable Top Tier, Mid Tier, and Bottom or strictly Situational Tier Major Essences you should consider using when playing a Mistweaver Monk. Anything not listed is currently considered undesirable or has no noteworthy interaction.
Keep in mind that each rank of each essence comes from a predetermined source and some cannot be unlocked until Season 4 begins, two weeks after patch 8.3 goes live, so plan accordingly. While the first rank of each essence is intended to be acquired relatively easily, the following ranks are meant to be increasingly time consuming, and many cannot be rushed within the first week of Season 4.

Use on: As the initial essence and potential go to if Conflict and Strife does not interest you
This essence provides you with a mana regeneration buff on a 2 minute cooldown. The mana regeneration has been changed and buffed over the course of PTR. Currently it provides a fair amount of additional mana from the major component. The minor also provides a chance to refund 50% of you mana spent on a cast. This is another good essence trait, that will be used as at least a minor and potentially a major as the rest of the tuning solidifies.
Effect on gameplay
Again, this is an essence that doesn’t impact our gameplay too much. The on use if a simple click and forget, and the minor is a passive proc. Generally speaking, use this on cooldown throughout a fight as long as you will not overcap on mana.

Use on: Mythic+ or Boss fights you may not be able to be in melee for
This essence stores a percentage of all overhealing, which can then be used as a single target heal. This provides an additional burst single target heal, which is something lacking in the Mistweaver toolkit. You will potentially run this when you cannot be in melee range where you could take advantage of
. Also, with the minor activated, there is additional healing that is applied from the well storage, when you heal a target below 50% health.
Effect on gameplay
Again, not a large impact on your gameplay. This just provides an additional button to heal someone with if they dip low in an emergency. Also, with the minor redistributing your overhealing, there is additional efficiency in recapturing that lost healing.

Use on: Fights where you need an additional raid wide healing cooldown
This essence blankets the raid in 2 stacks of
, which will heal them after they take damage. This provides the ability to blanket the raid in Seeds and then they are healing on the next damage event. There is not much more beyond just ensuring that you use this ability as close to on CD as possible .
Effect on gameplay
The major just provides an additional healing cooldown to press at appropriate times. There is no real magic beyond just making sure you press the button when the entire raid needs some sort of healing.

Use on: General Healing Fights
This essence will attach a HoT to an ally that steals healing from the highest HP ally in range. This essentially redistributes the overall raid health from a high HP target to a low HP target. This can be a solid essence to use on an target where they are taking a large amount of single target damage, while the rest of the raid remains relatively healthy.
This may be useful in some specific situations, but generally there are better essence options to fill this type of single target healing.
Effect on gameplay
No real effect on gameplay. Just use this on a priority healing target on cooldown.

Use on: General gameplay
Ever Rising Tide with some specific play to game the buff, you could potentially see this as a default essence when played correctly. For the general population, there are easier to use essences that do provide greater benefits.
In its current form, Ever Rising Tide provides a 8 second buff, that will increase your overall healing for every cast you have during the buff.
Effect on gameplay
The impact here is that you will need to ramp with the essence before damage occurs to make the most use of the buff from stacking the healing increase. This is a slight change since Mistweaver generally has very little setup in its normal rotation and healing kit. You will now need to understand damage patterns slightly better for fights so that you can begin your ramp at an appropriate time.

Use on: General gameplay
This is the first essence you will get during the introductory quests. It is a very straight forward essence with an active that heals a single target and a passive that has a chance to proc additional healing on a target of you heals. Power wise it is mid to low tier when compared to all of the available essences, but this may be the first one you are able to equip and you should use it until you get access to better essences
Effect on gameplay
None, other than to make sure you use the active on cooldown. Generally use it as a nice single target heal on a raid member taking some additional damage to help prop up their health.

This essence unlocks the use of
, the PvP talent for Mistweaver Monk. This talent is a 25 second reduction in your
cooldown.
Effect on gameplay
This will have a minor impact on your overall gameplay. If you can make use of a shorter CD on
then this will gain value, but considering your other options for a major essence, and the current gear levels, this will almost never been needed.

Use on: For any single target high damage events on a specific timer
This essence provides a large single target heal, and at rank 3 will heal up to 6 other allies who are also hit by the beam. From a Mistweaver perspective, we have spells in our toolkit that can handle pretty much any single target healing situation. Currently there are no fights with Ny’alotha that would take advantage of this additional single target healing.

This essence will send out 12 orbs from the player, that when they impact another player, provide an absorb shield to that player. This allows you to pre cast this essence for any upcoming damage event and shield about half your raid. The benefit here is that you will prevent some initial damage.
Unfortunately, in its current state, this essence does lag behind others in terms of pure HPS. There are much better options available within the 8.2 pool of essences to use.

This has a chance to activate a revival on any spell cast. It is extremely weak even under perfect circumstances and with the random nature of the proc, you can never predict when it will be useful. Avoid this essence unless there are no other options.
The Minor Power includes a reduction on Revival’s cooldown, which may potentially be useful if a fight has a specific timing window for Revival. Generally speaking though, there is little use for this in most content.

Use on: Specific Soak Mechanics
The major provides a single target buff that essentially delays all damage and healing up to a certain threshold on a target for 4 seconds. That damage and healing is then distributed over the course of the next 10 seconds. This functions much like a Brewmaster Monk’s Stagger mechanic.
This may see some potential use on specific soak or boss mechanics, but generally this is one essence you could forget exists.
The Minor Power is just a general haste buff on your healing targets. So no direct gain or buff to your own healing output from the minor.

Use on: Nothing
The major allows you to create 2 or 3 Lifeblood Shards instantly. These shards grant your increases Intellect when you stand in range. The shards themselves spawn around your character on a random interval. You can also benefit from other raid member's shard spawns to keep stacks of the Intellect buff.
This major is fairly weak, because the underlying shard mechanic is a liability on any high movement fight. There are a few fights in The Eternal Palace that require a fair amount of movement that will pull you away from these shard spawns. Also, the buff itself is not as impactful as other options. As a major, you will never equip this essence.

Use on: Nothing
The major allows you to put a beacon at a location and then teleport to that location after 2 seconds, and deal some amount of damage. This essence as a major has zero impact on your healing. There should never be a situation where you would equip this major.
Best Mistweaver Monk Minor Essences
Two additional Minor Essence slots can be unlocked over time, providing additional benefit. While the above rankings already detailed several minor bonuses, the rankings below consider only the Minor or how it might interact when using it alongside a different Major Essence. Anything not listed is currently considered undesirable or has no noteworthy interaction.
Note:
Essences are continuing to be tuned, so as such the below rankings will change over time as we get closer to their final iterations. Please check back often for updated information.
Use on: General Fights
This will provide a near constant buff of Versatility throughout a fight. You can think of this minor as just a Versatility stat increase. There will be generally only rare instances where you should lose your full stack of the buff. In those cases, the minor would lose value, but based on the current fight design, there aren’t many times where you have a large amount of downtime with nothing to do.
Effect on gameplay
Literally none, this is an entirely passively stacked buff.
Use on: All general content
The minor power for this essence releases some of the stored healing every time you heal someone below 50% HP. This is included on all healing events, so it would proc on say a Renewing Mist tick or Soothing Mist tick. Again, with the Well storing a portion of your overheal, the ability to reuse this healing make it a strong throughput option.
Effect on gameplay
Honestly, none. This is just an overall passive healing increase. You should not try and game the overhealing portion of this. Just play normally and enjoy the nice boost every time you heal someone below 50% health.
Use on: When not using the Major
This minor is extremely strong. This is a strong minor in any fight where mana is a potential issue, and generally speaking that is any time your are progressing. Even beyond progression, this may just be an equip and forget minor for most folks. Along with the Versatility proc at Tier 3, this will continue to be a strong choice.
Effect on gameplay
Passive proc, so with no control over when you receive the mana refund, just ensure you are using as much mana as possible during a fight. The Versatility buff is a nice touch at Tier 3, but again, no change in healing / playstyle from it.\
Use on: Later, as you unlock a second minor slot
Much less interesting of a minor power than the major. The minor provides just a chance to either grant an intellect buff for 10 seconds or restore some mana. The intellect buff portion is the much better option, unfortunately the proc chance being intellect decreases as your mana decreases. You are far more likely later on in a fight to get a mana proc which generally is not what you are looking for out of this essence.
This is a potential second minor slot choice once you unlock that neck.
Effect on gameplay
None. It is another passive proc, so potentially get excited when you do proc intellect and have a nice boost to your healing output.
Use on: Most fights, as it is a solid passive HPS increase
This essence applies a shield to allies within 15 yards every 10 seconds. This shield will stack up if it is not used within those 10 seconds. This is a great minor essence to increase your HPS in a passive way. In terms of new essence with 8.3, this is your go to essence to farm and work towards as you until that 3rd minor slot.
Effect on gameplay
None. It is another passive proc.
Use on: Passive, ticking AOE Damage Fights
The minor provides a chance for your heals to buff targets with
. This is the same buff from the major on use, except it is a chance to apply on each heal. These seeds will stack fairly often, so to ensure you get the most use out of them, fights where there is a constant low ticking damage may favor the use of this.
There are stronger options, but if you do need the additional healing for the low ticking damage, this is a potential option.
Effect on gameplay
Literally none, this is an entirely passively stacked buff.
Use on: High movement, into damage fights
The minor adds an Intellect buff after a large amount of movement in a short period of time. With the ability for monks to move quickly via
or
, there is the ability to game this essence to provide a nice buff. The buff itself lasts about 20 second and you can gain it every 30 seconds, so it may have a large amount of uptime if you can keep track of it.
Generally though, this minor is outclassed by others in power and ease of use.
Effect on gameplay
You will want to try and proc this before any big damage events. Just make sure you have moved the required amount and then plant your feet to start healing and leveraging the buff. One thing to note, since
is castable while moving, you could get this to proc mid
cast as a setup.
Use on: Any general healing fight
This essence provides a stacking buff to
every 5 seconds, stacking up to 5 times. In previous PTR builds, this affected the cleave targets of
but it has since been changed to just the main target. This has reduced a lot of the essences minor power and moved it well down the list of useful minor essences.
Effect on gameplay
Generally this passive buff won’t impact your healing too much. The quick heal portion affects only the main target
so there is nothing to particularly play around.
Use on: General Use
I am mentioning this minor just for completeness sake, but in reality, you will never equip this. It provides the chance that your healing spells will apply a haste buff to the target. While it does have a high chance to proc, the buff itself is generally worthless.
Effect on gameplay
Literally none.
Use on: Generally no bosses
For this essence, you gain primary stats and some haste at Rank 3, whenever another ally uses their major essence. .
Effect on gameplay
None, unless your are able to time essence usage of your raid team with specific events. In general this will be a passive buff to your player.
Use on: General Use
This is another minor that may see some very specific usage, but at this point is lackluster when compared to the other options. The minor essentially transfers health to your target from the nearest high health ally. This is just another way to re-balance the raids hit points and is in line with how the major functions.
This is not a true HPS increase, and may help in situations where you have varying levels of raid hit points, but again, there are stronger options which were outlined with the other sections.
Effect on gameplay
Another passive, and with the lack of targeted Monk healing spells, something we cannot control.
Use on: Very specific Raid Cooldown Timing Fights
The minor power for this essence reduces the cooldown of
by 13%. This makes your Revival a 2 minute 36 second cooldown. This is potentially useful only instances where having an additional raid cooldown is needed and worth the minor slot. In almost all cases though, this will never be used as a minor.
Effect on gameplay
With the reduction in
cooldown, you will need to use
every time it is off cooldown to make use of the passive reduction.
Use on: Nothing
The minor power for this essence spawns Life Blood shards. With the other options from an essence perspective, even with multiple people in your raid using this, it still falls short from a minor essence power perspective. There is generally no reason to equip this as a minor, unless you have no other options.
Use on: Nothing
The minor power for this essence adds a HoT on any target of your healing. No gameplay impact to using this, and also because of how weak it is, no impact on your healing power. Just equip anything other than this essence.

I have a question to author of this post. Following you guide, I have extremly fallen behind all other healers in my guild. How this essences are supposed to be that good? Cause from my experiane, conflict and strive can't compete with Resto shaman and ever rising tide (with more group/raid healing they can dish out huge amounts of healing) or Holy priest with Vision of perfection (Skillful priest will do extremly well with Divine Hymn's buff). Looking at our "top" essences, none of them are actually buffing our healing that much (comparing with some other specs!). Ever rising tide is useless cause we can't use it everytime it goes off cd. It buffs our Revival like crazy, but outside of it - essence font channel time makes it extremly useless. Vision of perceftion is meh - cause our CD doesn't give us any benefit, compared to Divine Hymn. Well of existence might be good but there is a problem - in HC progression I haven't even met 1 fight where i actually needed it. And like i've said - Conflit and strive is not giving us healing buff that is on par with what Shaman or Priest can do with right essences (pure HPS powerhouses) and is useful only as ... a short dps fun time...
