Welcome to Wowhead's guide to Adapting to Battle for Azeroth's pre-patch guide as a Restoration Shaman. Patch 8.0 brings a lot of changes from BFA to the world of Azeroth and this guide is made to make sure you are prepared for all upcoming changes. This guide gives you an overview of all the changes happening with patch 8.0 for Restoration Shaman.
This pre-patch page is intended to help you know the changes to Restoration Shaman during the pre-patch. Note that during pre-patch, while artifacts
no longer work
, we do not have our
azerite powers
yet, meaning this isn't the final picture for specs in BFA. However, we still retain the powers from legendaries, which will continue working
up to level 115
, creating some interesting situations, as some effects from legendaries
became baseline effects or talents in BFA
.

When you cast the first charge, the totem has to be recalled or it has to time out before you can use another charge. It is not possible to place multiple

at the same time.
This makes

a lot easier and more forgiving to use. For example you can always use 1 charge on cooldown while you hold the other one for specific situations you planned out beforehand. Also makes it possible to cast 2, or if you start with 2 charges ready even 3

s back to back in the case of extended incoming AoE damage.

This will feel very odd, as you'll effectively have a keybind less, and have to decide whether to use your old

or the

keybind for both spells.
Artifact Trait Removal
Our artifact

lost all the traits with the 8.0 patch. Most of them were purely numeric and have no impact on gameplay, the ones that did are listed here.

Keep in mind to not use

early anymore, as the removal of REMOVED

means that you won't gain an advantage from that trait anymore.

now heals the same on the first and last tick of healing.
Overall the
gameplay
impact of losing the artifact isn't huge, most of the things you will notice can be brought back by using talents for it.
War Mode
Another change from Legion into BFA is the addition of
War Mode
. War Mode is a new World PvP system in the Battle for Azeroth pre-patch, along with the new Honor system and Honor Talents. You are now able to toggle War Mode while in a capital city to gain access to PvP Talents in the outdoor world as well as other bonuses, like increased rewards from World quests and 10% extra experience. The downside is that you will always be in PvP combat mode, with the rewards counterbalancing that risk.
Changes to the Global Cooldown (GCD) for Resto Shamans
The Global Cooldown, or GCD, is a short lockout period which controls the rate with which abilities can be used; spells that are on the GCD are unable to be used simultaneously, while only abilities off the GCD can be used at the same time or during that lockout period. The global cooldown starts at 1.0 second for energy resource classes, and 1.5 seconds divided by haste for all others.
In Battle for Azeroth, many abilities which used to be off the GCD are now controlled by it. For Resto Shamans the abilities affected by this change are:

addition is the only impactful change. Why a reactive spell that needs immediate spellcasting to have any effect receives a GCD is unknown.
You won't be able to rely on it as much as you were able to before, activating it won't give you an immediate boost of healing to save multiple people at once. Where you used to be able to activate
升腾
as an emergency in dungeons, you now run into the risk of group members dying before the GCD ends and the follow-up cast finishes, as that will be a gap of 2 to 3 seconds.
Returning Legendary and Artifact Effects
In Battle for Azeroth, many old artifact traits and legendary effects from Legion were turned into talents and baseline abilities. It is known that we will lose our Artifacts
in a future event
. To add to that, Legion legendaries
will stop working at level 116

We are quite unchanged in the grand scheme of things, the only baseline ability change is rebalancing the power between

, most of the talent changes are to incorporate old artifact traits. Little changes also mean little impact for our stat priority, so it's unlikely that you'll have to change anything. We did lose a lot of burst healing, however, so don't expect to still be able to solo-heal things like multiple

stacks in the Mythic Aggramar encounter and other similar things that require a lot of healing at once. Consistent healing is our new (old) strength - while that might not fit perfectly into the Antorus fights, it will transition greatly into BFA raids.
Now that the expansion is on the last stretch, I recommend trying out new things. As

got weakened a lot for raiding, try out

also is as strong as it always was. Get a feel for the new talents and how they interact with each other. There is nothing brokenly strong that I would be able to recommend, the opposite, many talent rows are very balanced, even more so than in

General Shaman Changes

Summons an Earth Totem with 5 health at the feet of the caster that shakes the ground around it for 10 sec, removing Fear, Charm and Sleep effects from party and raid members within 30 yards.

Summons a totem at the target location that gathers electrical energy from the surrounding air and then explodes after 2 sec to stun, stunning all enemies within 8 yards for 53 sec.
Name changed from Lightning Surge Totem to Capacitor Totem
Cooldown changed from 45 sec cooldown to 1 min cooldown

Transforms the enemy into a frog for 1 min. While hexed, the victim is incapacitated, and cannot attack or cast spells. Damage may cancel the effect. Limit 1. Only works on Humanoids and Beasts.

Reduces the cooldown of Spiritwalker's Grace by 60 sec and increases your movement speed by 20% while it is active, and increases your movement speed in Ghost Wolf by an additional 10%.

Unleashes elemental forces of Life, healing a friendly target for (350%87.5% of Spell power) and increasing the effect of the Shaman's next direct heal by 45%.

Honor Talents

Summons an Air Totem with 105 health at the feet of the caster for 15 sec.
Whenever enemies within 20 yards of the totem deal direct damage, the totem will deal 100% of the damage dealt back to attacker.
You link yourself and two closest allies within 0 to 15 yards together. When linked targets take damage, 50% is distributed among the other linked allies. Linked targets receive 100% increased healing from your Chain Heal and Healing Rain. Lasts for 20 sec.

Your Healing Rain is 10% larger, and casting Healing Rain instantly restores 208 health to allies within its area.

Every 3 sec a wave of water flows from your Healing Stream Totem to an injured ally, restoring 82 health to allies in its wake.
Artifact Traits

Heals up to six injured allies within 12 yards for (400% of Spell power) and increases their maximum health by 10% for 6 sec.
