What are Essences?
Essences are a system of power progression for the Heart of Azeroth introduced in patch 8.2. These legendary-like bonuses are unlocked through pre-determined activities including dungeons, raids, open-world activities, PvP, reputations, and achievements, and come in four ranks: Uncommon, Rare, Epic, and Legendary. The second and third ranks add to or improve the base effect, while the last unlocks a flashy visual. Each Essence has a unique Major and Minor power, which can be socketed into the Heart of Azeroth upon completing a short introductory questline. For more information on available Essences and the drop locations for each rank, see our
Heart of Azeroth Essences Overview Guide
.
Essences may be changed in any rested area, or by using any
type item, but the same Essence cannot be used in multiple sockets, resulting in a total of 1 Major and 4 Minor powers active at any one time. You can pre-plan and preview your Essence setup in our
Essence Calculator
.

Account-Wide Essences for Alts
While Essences have been a chore to unlock on characters until Ny'alotha, Blizzard has introduced a new system in Patch 8.3 to speed up the process of obtaining Essences for subsequent characters: Echoes of Ny'alotha! Most current activities completed, like Mythic+, PvP, or Emissaries will reward a given number of Echoes, which can be traded at MOTHER at the Chamber of Heart for a Rank 3 Essence that you have already unlocked in another toon.

Retribution Paladin Essence Simulations
We have comparative simulations for each of the different Major and Minor essence powers, courtesy of SimulationCraft, Bloodmallet, and other class tools. Don't forget that this is simply an overview; you can create your own comparisons as well as combinations of different essences you have unlocked on your character using
Raidbots
Top Gear function. If you are not already familiar with Raidbots and how to use it, take a look at our
How To Guide
.
Again, this is simply an overview. Certain Essences, such as Worldvein minor, may be worse in practice on encounters with heavy movement or when you are the only player in your group using it. Reference the Essence notes and recommendations below to see how your spec can best take advantage of each individual power.
Warning: Vision of Perfection Major may not sim this high for you. Take into account the RNG nature of this essence if you do choose to equip it.
8.3 Essence Changes
A new Minor Slot can be unlocked at neck level 75.
3 new essences were added

Best Retribution Paladin Major Essences
Essences can be changed like talents so be prepared to know which Essences perform well in multiple different situations.
Although other Essences may perform well in specific circumstances, this is by far the best performing option.

Rank 1: Defeat King Mechagon.

, dropped by King Mechagon.

Abilities have a chance to activate
for a short duration. You and 2 allies also gain a small haste buff.
This Essence has high variance but is the best overall Essence for both single target and AoE situations, especially when paired with
and
Azerite traits.
These Essences are either only good in specific circumstances or are just not quite as strong as the best option.

Deals damage to enemies but most importantly grants extra critical strike and critical hit damage against those targets for a short duration. It is on a 1.5 minute cooldown making it an ideal Essence to use with
.
This is a powerful burst option if consistent timing is required. Performs well on both single target and AoE.

Rank 1: Combine 9
.
Rank 2: Combine 18
.
Rank 3: Combine 27
.
Rank 4: Defeat Queen Azshara on Mythic difficulty.
Summons a guardian for 30 seconds that deals damage to your target and deals AoE damage at less frequent intervals. The guardian also provides haste every time it casts a spell stacking up to 5 times. While the buff from this is nice, the 3 minute cooldown poses a problem.
Another decent option for consistent damage that can be synced with
, but not the best choice after the 8.3 nerf.
Source: Mythic+ (click for details!)
Rank 1: Complete a +4 Mythic dungeon in season 3.
Rank 2: Complete a +7 Mythic dungeon in season 3.
Rank 3: Combine 15
from the weekly cache.
Rank 4: Complete
.
A channeled, damage dealing cone on a 1.5 minute cooldown. You can move while channeling. Abilities will cancel the channel.
Strong AoE burst, usable in M+ if you don't have better options or want more consistent burst without needing to sync with other cooldowns.
Deals significant damage to your target. The cooldown is reduced if your target has more than 80% or less than 20% health. Resets the cooldown if it kills the target and increases damage of its next use.
If you're able to snipe low health enemies consistently for its reset then this can be a very strong option, but outside of that situation it's not anything special.

Rank 1: Complete the weekly quest

.
Rank 2: Combine
from island expeditions.
Rank 3: Complete the mission chain starting with "A Disturbing Rumor".
Rank 4: Complete a specific
mission.
Activating this Essence summons a Lifeblood Shard buffing you and your allies within range (who also have this Essence) with a primary stat buff that stacks up to 4 times.
The Major Power on this Essence was buffed considerably at rank 1 in 8.3. This Essence loses effectiveness if you are spread out from others or if you are the only one with the essence equipped. Coordinate with your group in situations where you could spend a considerable amount of time stacked with your party or raid members.

Deals damage over time to a target. You are given a buff that increases the damage of your next cast stacking twice. The third cast resets the buff and you start again from 0.
You get this Essence by doing the intro quest chain for patch 8.2. It's an easy essence to obtain if you're just starting out, but outside of that it's generally worse than
.
As a 2 minute cooldown this Power can increase our burst significantly. It may be somewhat difficult to play with as it will be harder to avoid overcapping Holy Power.
This Essence looks powerful, but if you're not using
as a Major Essence you'll almost certainly be using it as a Minor, which would cause it to desync with
. If you need burst damage on exactly a 2 minute cooldown this is worth considering though.
Gain access to Rank 1 of your targets Major Essence. Does not work on passive essences. The Formless Void is put on cooldown for 30% longer than the cooldown of the Essence you replicated.
There could potentially be uses on fights such as Vexiona where you could use another player's
to kill adds in the first phase and then
to do more single target damage in the second phase, but situations where this comes up are rare and the fact that it puts the essence on cooldown for longer make its potential more limited.
These Essences are generally considered weak because they are extremely niche or are meant to give utility at the cost of damage.
Increases damage from Azerite Essences for all nearby party members for the next 20 seconds.
It's hard to quantify the effectiveness of this Major Power since it doesn't provide personal gain. Generally not an option worth considering.

Fires off several bolts of damage at your target. If a bolt critically strikes it deals 300% increased damage and fires off an additional bolt. There is a cap on the number of extra bolts that can be fired off.
Generally weak in comparison to other Essences.

This essence offers little to no damage increase and should never be used.
Best Retribution Paladin Minor Essences
These are the strongest Minor Essences available. For most content you will want a combination of these, with at least one

Spells and abilities have a chance to give you a stacking Versatility buff. If you are afflicted by a loss of control or movement impairing effect you also will also gain a stack.
This buff doesn't usually drop once it reaches full stacks unless there's significant downtime during a fight and is just generally one of the better damage increases you can gain from a Minor Essence.
Abilities have a chance to refund half of the Holy Power spent on them. When you use
, for example, you have a chance to be refunded some of the Holy Power. Since
costs 3 Holy Power the refund will alternate between 1 and 2. So the first refund will always be 1 Holy Power, the second 2 Holy Power, the third 1 Holy Power etc.
A strong option that gives you a bit of extra Holy Power over the course of a fight, reducing downtime by a small amount.

Dealing damage against a target gives you a stacking Haste buff. The buff is lost if you change targets.
Loses a lot of value if there's consistent target swapping, but otherwise a strong Haste buff that stacks quickly.
Chance to strike your target for fire damage. Chance is drastically increased while target is below 20% health.
A strong passive damage proc, but also provides a unique bonus of +10 corruption resistance making it one of the best options available.
Gain a strength and haste buff whenever an ally within 40 yards uses an Azerite Essence.
This essence also provides the +10 corruption resistance bonus. While it's usually not quite as strong as
, at higher gear levels it can overtake it.
These Essences are either only good in specific circumstances or are just not quite as strong as the best option.

Since you automatically gain this Minor when you use it as a Major the only situations you'd want to use it are when you are using a different major for some reason. In those situations this is extremely strong as most of Ret's damage output happens during
and it will allow additional casts over the course of a fight.

Randomly summons Lifeblood Shards buffing you and your allies within range (who also have this Essence) with a primary stat buff that stacks up to 4 times.
This can be a powerful option as long as you have multiple group members also using this trait and there isn't a lot of movement, since you need to be in range to receive any benefit from the shards.

Spells and abilities have a random chance to deal AoE damage, dealing 50% additional damage to Aberrations.
Can do a lot of damage in AoE situations if it procs a lot, but lackluster on single target.

Worse than any of the other passive damage proc Essences.
Spells and Abilities have a chance to increase your haste and reduce the cooldown of your Major Essence. Effects are also granted to 2 nearby allies. Corruption Resistance is increased by 10 (Unique).
Since the best Major Essence is a passive without a cooldown this option is close to useless.

Abilities that do not critically strike have a high chance to give you a stacking buff which gives you a huge critical strike chance buff when fully stacked.
