Welcome to Wowhead's Retribution Paladin Arena PvP Guide, up to date for 9.2! In this section of the guide, we cover effective strategies for Retribution Paladins in PvP, including how to deal with your low mobility, using your utility, and some common mistakes that Retribution Paladins make (so that you can avoid making them yourself). Strategy is crucial for winning arenas, so knowing how to use your toolkit will prove useful. We also cover ideal rotations for Retribution Paladins in PvP. Although PvP isn't necessarily rotation-based, it is useful to know how to output as much damage as you can (when it is possible to do so).

Effective Strategies for Retribution Paladins in PvP
Most Retribution compositions follow a similar strategy. Hit what you can, don’t let yourself get lured too deep out of position and walk into a setup, and prioritize supporting your team with your utility. Don’t be afraid to use
复仇之怒
early to force out cooldowns which will setup a kill opportunity later!
Using your

to allow your team to follow up with CC will be more effective than throwing it out on your own as you please.
If you are new to Retribution, simply running at healers is, and has always been, very effective. This is especially true when running a double melee cleave at low ratings, and especially against Shamans, Priests, and Holy Paladins! Just don’t go chasing around a Mistweaver or Resto Druid...
Finally, don’t be afraid to hug a pillar and start healing when your team is in trouble and needs to recover. Retribution off-healing is strong in Shadowlands. Make the most of it!
General Rotations for Retribution Paladins in PvP
Retribution uses a priority system that revolves around Holy Power. Use Judgement as much as possible, don't over generate Holy Power and you can't go wrong. Blade of Justice resets off auto-attacks, so use that before engaging in melee range. My advice here is to make the most of
灰烬觉醒
no matter what build you are. It is your hardest hitter, so save it for when you use

otherwise your damage will easily be healed through.
Rotationally, you're going to get very little use out of Crusader Strike because we are far more global starved than we are in PvE, which is why we don't talent into anything involving pressing it. It is great if you can keep 1x charge on cooldown, but don't worry much about it.
Your burst sequence is by far the most important part of your rotation. Here are a few pointers:
Combo
with
灰烬觉醒
. If you don't have big damage ready, don't press
. Spend the HP on a finisher instead and be patient.
If you're specced into
神圣意志
, be sure to pop your

with a proc and full Holy Power so you can spam as many finishers as possible. The same holds true for if you're specced into
.
Kyrian (Pelagos) Burst Sequence should look like this:
Seraphim -> HoJ -> (Wings) Divine Toll -> Final reckoning -> Finisher -> Wake -> Finisher -> Judgement -> Finisher
Necrolord looks like this:
Vanquisher's Hammer (prebuff) -> Judgement Debuff -> Generate 5HP -> Seraphim -> HoJ -> (Wings) Wake -> Final Reckoning -> Finisher -> Judgement -> Finisher
The Necrolord buff lasts 20 seconds so if you time it properly you can actually get two empowered finishers in one Seraphim window, and if you've specced into Divine Punisher you can get another Finisher inside the Final Reckoning Window.
With Kyrian we wait for Divine Toll before Waking because of the Mastery buff from Pelagos. For Necrolord, there is no need to wait.
I recommend following
up immediately with a HoJ or big damage instead of trying to generate 5HP again before the burst.
The reason for this is your opponents will see your Seraphim and they will try to CC you. You want to give them as little time to do this as possible, even though we would get one more finisher during our 8 seconds of Final Reckoning if we built up a few more Holy Power first. Do not take this as law, just a guideline. If you're confident you can squeeze in a BoW and CS before initiating the sequence, do it and get your CR! :)
Common Mistakes Retribution Paladins Make
Retribution is one the least mobile specs in the entire game. A mistake I see a lot of Retribution players make is that they tunnel vision one target for too long or get baited into poor positions and cannot make it back to safety.
If you can, try to anticipate CC on your healer and keep your global cooldown free to use
庇护祝福
instantly. Retribution is a spec without much disruption. You have plenty of escapes and utility in exchange for that, so don’t let yourself walk into a setup with cross-CC you could have avoided!
If you’re playing with a specialization that relies on your
制裁之锤
to land CC, be sure to coordinate with them to help land the CC. Throwing out your stun as you please while your partners struggle to land CC on their own is counterproductive!
Countering Other Classes, Tips & Tricks
Using your utility, like
庇护祝福
on enemy CC or using
保护祝福
to negate offensive cooldowns such as
宿敌
or
致盲
, or even using it creatively to negate defensive cooldown such as
业报之触
is how you counter other classes as Retribution.
Don't be afraid to use
庇护祝福
on your non-healer teammate! If the enemy team cross-CCs during the stun on your healer, you can still shut down the attempt by rescuing, say, your Warrior from a Kidney and the Warrior could Intervene to save you or place a War Banner down to disrupt the next chain of incoming CC. Nobody really expects this, so it's often very effective, albeit risky.
Using
牺牲祝福
properly is important to counter enemy crowd control. Any crowd control that can be broken with damage can be broken with the redirect damage from
牺牲祝福
. Since it's off the global cooldown, the only variable to preventing yourself from getting peeled close to a kill when it could have been Sac'd is your awareness.
Your heals can break Crowd Control on your team if you heal them while you're affected by
控心术
.
