Welcome to Wowhead's Retribution Paladin Arena PvP Guide, up to date for 9.2! In this section of the guide, we will cover the best talents for Retribution Paladins in Arena PvP, optimal PvP Talent builds, and the best racials for both Alliance and Horde Retribution Paladins in PvP. Retribution Paladins currently have many options when it comes to choosing talents, allowing you to make changes based on your situation or your playstyle. There aren't too many standout racials to choose from for Retribution Paladins.

Recommended Talent Build for Retribution Paladins in PvP

The new

after the nerf.
The initial damage is reduced by 31% in PvP
and it cannot crit. Combo'ing it with

can still deal an enormous amount of burst but since it can't crit, pressing Final Verdict will usually pull ahead unless you were able to execute your burst sequence perfectly and your opponent didn't react at all.
Beware, it is now a proper spell and it will be reflected by Spell Reflect and similar anti-spell mechanics. In BfA, it behaved more akin to a ranged missile.
You're going to want to focus on the 20% damage accumulator part of the ability to make the most of this since the initial hit deals far less damage than a standard Templar's Verdict. That means don't bother to prebuff Final Reckoning like you would in PvE, use it after.
If you are just starting with PvP and want to keep it simple, choose
Zeal.
I am recommending Zeal over

because it only buffs Templar's Verdict by 10% in PvP, which is an effective 33% nerf to the talent while engaged in PvP. Zeal will pull ahead in terms of overall damage against cloth and leather. Zeal also increases Art of War procs, which synergies well with Blade of Wrath and Law and Order. Zeal does not penalize you for downtime like Righteous Verdict does.

has been our bread and butter for multiple expansions now. You will want to constantly be using finishers to get the cooldown on this reduced as much as possible. Pair with the PvP talent

does not break on Holy Damage. You can deal some ranged damage into it and get some cheesy kills, especially with multiple Paladins attacking into it. It's also a great pick combined with a Sub Rogue!

is your go-to talent if you don’t know what to expect. It is useful in all situations.

is useful if you need the mobility and you can afford to give up some defensive utility.

is the best defensive option against double melee cleaves that deal physical damage.

. They are both 45 second cooldowns, it is one of your hardest hitting abilities and therefore should always be buffed by Seraphim and the Holy Power generation directly offsets the cost of Seraphim.

is nerfed in PvP however it can still be good if you find teams are reacting to your
and shutting you down with CC. If you're a Necrolord, the free Divine Storm from Vanquisher's Hammer can trigger Divine Purpose and it appears that free finishers are once again reducing the cooldown of Fist of Justice so it can be a great pick.

is best utilized for very short games or games that require pinch burst healing, reminiscent of our Cataclysm days when this spell was called Zealotry.

is powerful but it is nerfed 50% in PvP as of 9.1. Still a decent choice, the nerf makes

a little more competitive.

is still useful for games where you cannot afford to spend your Holy Power on anything other than damage. This can also act as dispel protection.
If you're facing Rogue/Mage, a setup comp similar or a team with a lot of offensive dispels I think

is better. If you're able to dish out finishers and the pressure is more consistent, I think

pulls ahead.

is more suited to solo play and duels with

. It's not a great talent for competitive PvP. It's important to note that with Sanctified Wrath, the damage scales off Holy Power spent and because this costs 5 Holy Power, it can hit HARD.

. This is a great pick for rated and unrated Battlegrounds because your wings uptime will be so high with these auras. This is also the case for many matchups in 3v3 and in cases where the consistent Avenging Wrath damage is valued more than the 1 minute burst windows. For example, if a Restoration Druid is using Ironbark on every Final Reckoning, you're going to be more effective using Sanctified Wrath. There are many teams that can shut down 8 seconds of Final Reckoning but they can't deal with 25 second wings and more powerful wings procs.

the damage bonus increase has been nerfed by 50% in PvP. It can still be effective when used with our other 1 minute/45 second cooldown abilities, especially in comps like Ret/Rogue. It hits hard and the passive is also nice, you aren't penalized for holding your cooldowns for an opportune moment!
Ultimately which is best is going to depend on the situation you're in. Good teams can shutdown

windows by trading defensives or CC'ing you. On the other hand, If you and your team can set it up properly and if you can crank during the Windows, this talent can land you a kill. Finishers can hit 20k+ easily with this talent!
On the other hand, because of the high Wings uptime from

. Get used to both, because you should be swapping between them from matchup to matchup. If you watch the best Rets stream, you'll find they are swapping these talents not only matchup to matchup but even depending on the strategy within the same matchups.
Recommended PvP Talents for Retribution Paladins
PvP Medallions are now trinkets, and I strongly recommend taking

This talent is mandatory for 3v3 unless the enemy team has no Silences, Fear, or Stuns. You should almost always have this selected for 3v3 Arena.
Choice 2 - Utility OR Damage

For choice #2, we're going to ask ourselves a few questions.
Are there any useful Magic debuffs worth dispelling?
If so, talent into

If not, do we need additional mobility for our team? (Do you have a Warrior?)

is a great option if you're up against a team that purges your Freedom and abuses your mobility, or you have another melee like a Warrior that could benefit from the double Freedom.
Does your team have a reliable snare?
If not, talent into:

. In 2v2, the snare is very useful. I would go so far as to say some matchups are unplayable without it.
You can also consider the newly buffed

if you don't need the double freedom for your team and you don't need the magic dispel.
If you value damage more than any of the utility, go with

Choice 2/3 - Damage - ranked in order.

This talent stacks up quickly and although it is a proc you can actually keep track of the stacks on your buff bar or with a Weak Aura, and you can control the proc with your auto attack!
By turning your autoattack off, de-targetting your enemy, or by staying out of melee range, you can decide when this goes off. Managing your proc and setting up your burst window properly like this will get you CR, guaranteed.
If you're against a team that crits a lot like something with a Demon Hunter or teams with a lot of DoTs, you can get a ton of value from this talent because each crit, no matter how small, will build a stack.
神罚者
This talent is very underrated, it can provide a lot of extra healing or burst if you can make the most of it. It's not great against things that can get away easily.

This adds reliable cleave damage. I think there are better choices than this in most scenarios now for 3v3 but this can really rack up the cleave damage in longer fights, especially if a team fight goes on long enough where you can maintain it on 3+ people. This will be a strong talent if you're playing a comp like Ret Shadowpriest or Ret Warlock.

Use this against Destruction Warlocks and other specs with lots of small duration Crowd Control. it's a situational choice. Remember, if there is enough CC going around to get you max stacks, you probably aren’t going to have the uptime to make use of it. I find the issue with this talent is the buff expires while you are in CC. in 9.1 this offers a maximum of 12% crit which is nowhere near as good as it was.

It's not worth the talent slot for 3v3 in my opinion but if you are able coordinate a swap with your team in an RBG it could easily turn around a fight so it has value in some scenarios.
If you pull this off and turn around a game in a tournament I will buy you a coffee :)

I don't see this talent being a priority for 3v3 but for RBGs and other larger scale content it may be worth taking.
Optimal Racials for Retribution Paladins in PvP
Alliance
Dark Iron Dwarf is, in my opinion, the best option for either faction. The racial is so versatile - you can use it to escape from Magic roots, you can use it to get rid of

, and the extra burst from

is
good
very strong. This can account for upwards of 20% of your strength during a burst! One thing to be aware of is it does put your PvP trinket on a short cooldown so you have to me more mindful using this than you otherwise would with say a DPS trinket or another racial. It's totally possible that you press Fireblood to go for a burst and then immediately get Kidney shot and die because you can't trinket. This can be mitigated with intelligent play.
The stun escape from Human's

is also very powerful. Human also increases your secondary stats which means more Versatility and it opens up the possibility of using different trinket options together with Sephuz, discussed more in-depth in the gearing section.
Horde

Which one is best honestly depends on your matchup. Blood Elf and Tauren are both underrated. Both racials can win games!
Zandalari Trolls can combine

with Divine Shield or Blessing of Protection to heal to 100% without using any mana. This can be a game changer in dampening.
