What is Corruption?
Corruption is a new system of power progression which replaces Titanforging; instead of item level bonuses, they will now have a chance to be Corrupted by the Old Gods, represented by the purple-colored stat which adds both a positive effect and stacking negative attribute which incurs penalties at various thresholds. Although the negative effects can reach a point at which they become debilitating, carefully managing the bonuses and penalties allows for a great deal of customization and individual power gain.
Corrupted gear can be freely cleansed by MOTHER in order to remove both effects and revert them back into normal items. Corruption can also be added on non-corrupted items, by purchasing
Preserved Contaminants with MOTHER
. Corruption resistance can also be gained over time, both from new minor essences, and the legendary cloak
, allowing more corrupted effects to be worn. For more information on all potential Corruptions, see our
Corruption Overview Guide
.
Buying Corruptions with Echoes of Ny'alotha for Shadow Priests
What Corruptions should I Buy from MOTHER on a Shadow Priest?
Corruptions now can be
purchased from MOTHER
using
. Every few days, a new set of Corruptions will be accessible.
With that in mind, we present a list of the best corruptions to purchase from MOTHER on a Shadow Priest.
We have found that the best combo for your potential 9 corruptions (8 with a 2h weapon) is an even split of
and
. There is a potential for
to be better than
at certain levels of Crit, but it's largely gear dependent and doesn't scale on multiple targets as well.
Additionally, we have found that running 3x
, 2x
and 1x
can be a DPS increase with at least
2300 Crit before any corruption gear additives. This isn't easily achievable and requires a lot of crit/haste gear in order to hit this. This setup isn't too far ahead of the standard setup of 3x
, 2x
and 1x
, but is still worth mentioning.
As with everything, it's best to sim your own character to find out what is best for you.
Best Shadow Priest Corruption Bonuses
We have comparative simulations for each of the various Corruption affixes which can roll on gear, courtesy of SimulationCraft and Bloodmallet. While this overview should give you a good general idea of how each compare to one another, your specific character may see slightly different results based on how you are geared and what Corruptions are available to you; you can create your own comparisons as well as combinations of different essences you have unlocked on your character using
Raidbots
Top Gear function. If you are not already familiar with Raidbots and how to use it, take a look at our
How To Guide
. When looking at corruption effects it is important not to look at the overall power of a given effect, but at how much power per corruption is gained while staying below your safe threshold. By using Top Gear, you can play with the Max Corruption bar, allowing you to maximize your damage based on your Corruption risk choices.
This is simply an overview and doesn't take into account the negative effects of stacking Corruption. While increasing Corruption will continually increase player power, it comes at the cost of serious side effects, which may be debilitating in some activities or encounters. Reference the Corruption Effect notes and recommendations below to see how your spec can best take advantage of these bonuses and deal with the detriments.
Please also note that when using more than one of the same corruption, even different tiers of the same corruption, the effect/benefit (damage, statistical gains, etc) stack while durations and proc rates remain unchanged. The only exception is
, unique to the Ny'alotha raid weapon
, which will proc independently when dual wielded.
Data from Bloodmallet. Click here to learn more about it.
Best Effects
Shadow Priests will generally prioritize
, although, increased Critical Strike Damage
, increased Critical Strike
, and increased Haste
can be useful as well.
- The best damage proc
- The best damage proc with the best corruption value.
Note: with the recent nerf, this has lost a lot of value and likely isn't worth buying.
- The best stat proc
Good Effects
- This is not as good as the haste proc, but is better than nothing.
- Somewhat useful , especially in higher stacks of Voidform
- Somewhat useful, especially if multiple people have the same corruption.
- Passive damage that procs fairly often. Not useful on short lived adds.
Bad Effects
- Not very useful, as Versatility is one of our worst stats.
- Not very useful, as Mastery is one of our worst stats.
/
- This requires you to be in melee, not something shadow priests should often find themselves doing.
- Not very useful, as the cooldown amount is quite low and we are still trapped by the GCD.
- Actually procs off of spell casts, not just attacks like the tool tip states.
Best Shadow Priest Ny'alotha Weapons
Besides random corruption effects, weapons from the new Ny'alotha raid also have exclusive effects on them, which can be quite powerful. Similar to random corruption effects, if you obtain a weapon with a subpar effect, you can always cleanse it. As a Shadow Priest, you can obtain weapons with the following effects:
-
-
and
are about equal in value. Ideally you'll want
on an armor piece, since a weapon that we can use doesn't drop with it on, and will want to spend your corruption budget there instead of on these weapons.
Dealing with Negative Effects of Corruption
In addition to the bonuses, corrupted items also increase the Corrupted stat by varying amounts based on the tier of the effect. Corruption stat incurs penalties that the player must deal with, and while these effects start out rather benign, they quickly ramp up in both potency and impact, to the point where it can be very hard to deal with during a Dungeon or Raid encounter, and even become outright debilitating at the highest levels.
There are five effects unlocked at different total corruption levels:
- Unlocked with 1 Corruption
- Unlocked with 20 Corruption
- Unlocked with 40 Corruption
- Unlocked with 60 Corruption
- Unlocked with 80 Corruption
Learn more about Corruption in our in-depth guide!
At Rank 6, the legendary Cloak
gains an on-use effect which will remove and immune all currently active negative corruption effects.
You can use
, but at the cost of your only defensive cooldown. Since good placement is key to playing Shadow well, you should only use
as a last ditch effort for a big move.
For
, Priests can stutter step out of the void zones with ease.
- Since the Thing from Beyond disappears when stunned, picking
can actually be a very valuable tool in tight quarters where it's impossible to avoid the creature.
- Highly recommended to have
or
ready in order to get out of the effect, though you should be wary of letting your corruption get this high in the first place.
How Much Corruption Should a Shadow Priest Take?
Shadow has one of the best tool kits to deal with all levels of corruption. While you should not exceed 80 corruption by too much as the damage increase and healing reduction from
can become unmanageable quickly, all of the corruption effects have a random proc rate of once per minute. This means that the effects will proc at least once a minute, maybe more. In reality, the adds can chain spawn on top of you making you lose a ton of DPS dealing with it. Unless you're pushing for bleeding edge progression where every bit of DPS matters, I recommend erring on the side of caution when it comes to corruption. A good rule of thumb is to try and stay below 40 corruption to deal with only the slowing effect.
Here's an example situation:
You have two pieces with
, one piece with
, and another with
. As you've been raiding, you've noticed that you're spending more time dealing with corruption effects rather than DPS'ing. To deal with this, you'll want to purge
and possibly
from your gear as they contribute the least to your DPS. By doing this, you'll have less corruption effects to deal with, and you'll actually gain DPS as a result.

Twisted Appendage - Useless to us as we don't attack.
I'm pretty sure I've seen damage from this in the damage meter when I used it on one boss. Maybe it's just wrong/confusing description and it also procs of damage spells and not just melee attacks.

I don't understand why Twisted Appendage is listed under "Bad Effects" when it essentially ties at rank 6 with Void Ritual in the graph just above it and Void Ritual is then listed as a "Good Effect" despite the value being virtually identical. It's a pretty top tier corruption to have and it does lots of damage and works well for Shadow Priests. I was running 3x T2 Twisted Appendage in Ny'alotha the longest time and often ended up being a major contribution to my overall damage, such as in the below log.
https://www.warcraftlogs.com/reports/CbrFJLvM4HZwtQRc#fight=27&type=damage-done&source=152
Similarly, Twilight Devastation is actually REALLY GOOD to run in Mythic+, especially in Fortified weeks. Again, I tend to run T5 Twilight Devastation (1x T3 and 1x T2) and the damage from this cannot be ignored. Take this recent Motherlode run, for example:
https://www.warcraftlogs.com/reports/GyjYhwA23VdmtQf7#fight=1&type=damage-done&source=1
Granted, my group usually runs ~15-17 only, so we don't run super high keys, but listing these effects as "Bad" is misleading at best. In a raid situation Twilight Devastation is certainly not the best for a Shadow Priest as positioning becomes an issue (which is really a non-issue in Mythic+ most of the time) and long boss fights strongly favor corruptions like Infinite Stars.
This guide should perhaps clarify where these corruptions are useful to run and where not. And it should certainly take another look at calling Twisted Appendage "bad". I don't disagree with the other recommendations at all, they're very spot on and it's otherwise a very well written guide, but the guidance on these two irks be because it makes the effects seem really bad when they are actually pretty good and even Twilight Devastation can be used very successfully as a Shadow Priest.
Is it strictly better to stack Severe and Expedient? Yes, no doubt about that. But that doesn't make the above effects "Bad" as a rule. Until just this week it wasn't possible to choose corruptions and if you happened to get a lot of Twisted Appendage and Twilight Devastation, like myself, those are superior effects to run with if you don't have Severe or Expedient in your options.

May also be worth noting that the Thing from Beyond no longer disappears when you stun it. It will stick around for the full duration and can definitely still hit you when it comes out of the stun if it's close enough/the duration hasn't expired yet.

Forgive the potentially silly question. The guide suggests stacking severe and expedient, seemingly in lieu of infinite stars, yet infinite stars appears to be the single best effect. Infinite stars has a high purchase cost, and I don't want to purchase it if it is not deemed worthwhile. Thoughts?
