Welcome to Wowhead's guide to Adapting to Battle for Azeroth's pre-patch guide as a Shadow Priest. Patch 8.0 brings a lot of changes from BFA to the world of Azeroth and this guide is made to make sure you are prepared for all upcoming changes. This guide gives you an overview of all the changes happening with patch 8.0 for Shadow Priest.
This pre-patch page is intended to help you know the changes to Shadow Priest during the pre-patch. Note that during pre-patch, while artifacts
no longer work

yet, meaning this isn't the final picture for specs in BFA. However, we still retain the powers from legendaries, which will continue working

Core Shadow Priest Changes
The current iteration of Shadow is much slower than it was in Legion. This is in part to do with an increased drain rate of insanity, a lesser cooldown reduction of mind blast in voidform, and general changes in our kit. The shifting of stats, as well as the
stat squish
, hit shadow especially hard. Additionally, the loss of our artifact passive traits that helped generate insanity is very noticeable. However, not all is bad, the new shadow is a bit burstier due to more Voidforms, and thus more Void Eruptions, additionally we’ve received a few new talents that help address some of the weaknesses of the spec.
How are we affected?
Impact of Removed Spells and Artifact Traits

No longer being baseline almost removes us from being an execute class.

This artifact trait is one of the few that made staying in

for so long as possible. While

did receive a buff and now generates insanity it was not enough to compensate for the lack of

Allows us to quickly dot a bunch of mobs all at once. While this does compete with

, the additional insanity generation and short cooldown help make this very useful.

lets us interrupt every 30s, rather than 45. This is very useful for fights where you may need to be in an interrupt rotation.

A 4-second single target stun with a 45-second cooldown is great in any content and helps shadow bring more utility to the table

This behaves exactly as it did in legion as an artifact ability with a cooldown of 45 seconds rather than 60 seconds. Unfortunately, this competes with

which does superior damage and extends our

longer, making it a subpar choice

This use to be baseline, unfortunately, it is now a talent. Paired with the reduction of

damage and the fact it competes with

, both of which are superior talents, this is, unfortunately, a dud talent.
Impact of Changed Spells and Talents

The increased cooldown while in

and the reduction in generating insanity have had large impacts on the spec as a whole.
Now gives less insanity, causing the threshold for dropping

to be slightly higher

A bug that made the spell increase DoT duration beyond 3 seconds has been fixed, meaning we will need to manually recast our dots more often.

3 seconds less duration is very noticeable and will result in recasting quite often

2 seconds less duration is very noticeable, even when using

, you will need to recast this often, especially on multi target

The reduction of insanity generated per hit further reduces our insanity generation

Received a large nerf and it is advised its avoided at all costs.

Due to a lot of stun abilities being changed, this talent was unfortunately hit as well. The disorient effect breaks almost immediately making this talent almost useless in any situation

, doesn’t make this a very attractive talent
Miscellaneous Discussion

Unfortunately, most of what made
虚空形态
good has been removed. The loss of
and the reduction of haste gained has made
虚空形态
feel very awkward to upkeep. This paired with a slower playstyle, lower dot durations, start of an expansion gear, and general sluggishness contributes to the state of shadow. Thankfully, the devs are aware of this and have promised some fixes in patch 8.1.
Stats
While this is covered more in-depth in the
stats section
of the guide, it's better to be forewarned that shadow
will feel and play differently
. The loss of haste from
虚空形态
in addition to not taking
延宕狂乱
in most cases will have the spec playing slower. Naturally, you will feel like you want more haste to get back to that fast playstyle of Legion, however, that went away with patch 8.0. Be sure to read the stat section to see what stats to go for and why they are important.
Pre-Patch Shenanigans
Some specs get to have some ridiculous synergy with their legendaries. Unfortunately shadow has a bit of the opposite, but we do have some nice perks.

War Mode
Another change from Legion into BFA is the addition of
War Mode
. War Mode is a new World PvP system in the Battle for Azeroth pre-patch, along with the new Honor system and Honor Talents. You are now able to toggle War Mode while in a capital city to gain access to PvP Talents in the outdoor world as well as other bonuses, like increased rewards from World quests and 10% extra experience. The downside is that you will always be in PvP combat mode, with the rewards counterbalancing that risk.
Changes to the Global Cooldown (GCD) for Shadow Priests
The Global Cooldown, or GCD, is a short lockout period which controls the rate with which abilities can be used; spells that are on the GCD are unable to be used simultaneously, while only abilities off the GCD can be used at the same time or during that lockout period. The global cooldown starts at 1.0 second for energy resource classes, and 1.5 seconds divided by haste for all others.
In Battle for Azeroth, many abilities which used to be off the GCD are now controlled by it. For Shadow Priests the abilities affected by this change are:

Returning Legendary and Artifact Effects
In Battle for Azeroth, many old artifact traits and legendary effects from Legion were turned into talents and baseline abilities. It is known that we will lose our Artifacts
in a future event

The following abilities have been removed:

A word of dark binding that inflicts (325%187.5% of Spell power) Shadow damage to the target. Only usable on enemies that have less than 20% health.
Generates 15 Insanity, or 30 Insanity if the target dies.
Now a talent
The following abilities have been added:

Pulls the spirit of a party or raid member, instantly moving them directly in front of you.

Infuses the target with vitality, increasing their Stamina by 10% for 1 hour.
If the target is in your party or raid, all party and raid members will be affected.

Disperse into pure shadow energy for 6 sec, reducing all damage you taketaken by 60% for 6 sec, but you are unable to attack or cast spells. Clears all snare and movement impairing effects when cast, and makes you immune to them while dispersed.
Voidform does not drain Insanity while dispersed.
Castable while stunned, feared, or silenced.
Voidform's Insanity drain is temporarily reduced by 100% while dispersed.
Castable while stunned, feared, or silenced.

Increases the damage of your Shadow Word: Pain, Vampiric Touch, Mind Blast, Mind Flay, Mind Sear, Void Eruption, and Void Bolt by 20%9.6%.

Blasts the target's mind for (310%120% of Spell power) Shadow damage.
Generates 1512 Insanity.
Cooldown changed from 9 to 7.5 sec

Generates 65 Insanity over the duration per target hit.
Now a separate ability

Shields an ally for 15 sec, absorbing Spell power * 5.5) + 0 * (1 + Versatility) * 1 * 1] damage, and preventing damage from delaying spellcasting.
Cooldown changed from 7.5 sec cooldown to None
Cost changed from 2.3% of base mana to 2.5% of base mana

Removes all Disease effects from a friendly target.
Cost changed from 2.6% of base mana to 1.3% of base mana
Wraps an ally in shadows which heal for (750%180% of Spell power), but at a price.
The ally will take 750%180% of Spell power) / 20] damage every 1 sec, until they have taken 750%180% of Spell power) / 2] total damage from all sources, or leave combat.

A word of darkness that causes (31%20% of Spell power) Shadow damage instantly, and an additional (279%120% of Spell power) Shadow damage over 1816 sec.
Generates 4 Insanity.
Cost changed from 2.2% of base mana to 1.8% of base mana
暗影魔
Summons a shadowy fiend to attack the target for 12 sec.15 sec.
Generates 3 Insanity each time the Shadowfiend attacks.

Assume a Shadowform, increasing your Shadowspell damage dealt by 10%, and reducing your Physical damage taken by 10%.
When your Shadow Word: Pain damage over time critically strikes, you also create a shadowy version of yourself that floats towards the target and deals (27.5%25% of Spell power) Shadow damage.

Silences the target, preventing them from casting spells for 54 sec. Against non-players, also interrupts spellcasting and prevents any spell in that school from being cast for 34 sec.
Now requires Level 52, up from 50

Fills you with the embrace of Shadow energy for 15 sec, causing you to heal a nearby ally for 40%85% of any single-target Shadow spell damage you deal.
Cooldown changed from 3 min cooldown to 2 min cooldown

A touch of darkness that causes 80 Shadow damage over 21 sec, and heals the Priest for 50%you for 50% of damage dealt.
If Vampiric Touch is dispelled, the dispeller flees in Horror for 3 sec.
Generates 6 Insanity.

For the duration of Voidform, your Void Eruption ability is replaced by Voidbolt:Void Bolt:
Sends a bolt of pure void energy at the enemy, causing (220%120% of Spell power) Shadow damage.
Generates 16 Insanity.

Releases an explosive blast of pure void energy, activating Voidform and causing 1200%80% of Spell power) * 2] Shadow damage to all enemies afflicted by your Shadow Word: Pain or Vampiric Touchwithin 10 yds of your target.
During Voidform this ability is replaced by Void Bolt.
Requires 100 Insanity to activate.

Activated by casting Void Eruption. Twists your Shadowform with the powers of the Void, increasing Shadowspell damage you deal by 20%10% reducing the cooldown on Mind Blast by 3 sec1.5 sec
and granting an additional 1%0.5% Haste every 1 sec. Your Insanity will drain increasingly fast until it reaches 0 and Voidform ends.

Mastery is actually our best, not our worst stat. Maybe the information that was the basis for this guide, is too old. Please check the newest patch notes.
I don't agree with the low value given to Mastery. While Haste still is better (especially in Multi target encounters where you spend a lot of time refreshing dots), Mastery trumps Versatility and is on par with Critical Strike (a bit lower but by a small percentage and thus should not be ignored).

This entire post being "Ah #$%^ it's all gone WRONG" is pretty sad. I really enjoyed Shadow when it was all about ramping up those Voidform stacks and being this unstable artillery cannon of Shadowy death, but it seems that's just dead in the water now.
