Welcome to Wowhead's guide about flying, riding, and Pathfinder in Shadowlands! Learn about Shadowlands Pathfinder, which will allow flying within Covenant zones starting in Patch 9.1, as well as changes to riding and flying with the Shadowlands expansion! This guide covers information for Shadowlands Pathfinder, riding skill for leveling characters, previous expansions' Pathfinders, and the fate of the Flight Master's Whistle.
How to Unlock Zereth Mortis Flying
Flying in Zereth Mortis is unlocked accountwide through a series of achievements and quests. For full information on unlocking Zereth Mortis flying, please see the following guide:
Flying in Zereth Mortis
Flying and Riding in Shadowlands Covenant Zones
Patches 9.1 and 9.1.5 opened the ability to fly in certain Shadowlands zones, as well as the ability to use any ground mounts within the Maw. There are some steps you will need to take to open these skills. Flying in Shadowlands is account-wide -- open it for one and it opens for all characters entering Shadowlands with no level restrictions. Riding ground mounts in the Maw can be obtained at level 60 and is character-specific, although once you've completed the requirements on one character, you are offered an easy quest skip and can get it with no effort.
How to Unlock Shadowlands Flying
When you start Patch 9.1 at Renown 40, you will begin a new series of Covenant campaign chapters -- 9 in all. Good new: completing all of them isn't required to fly!
Renown 44 opens Chapter 12,
The Last Sigil
, the third Covenant Campaign chapter in this second series of campaigns. At the end of this storyline, you will get the quest
兵主归来
and receive the reward
阴云回忆
.
Note that you must also have completed your 9.0 campaign and completed Chapters 3/9 in the 9.1 campaign to open
The Last Sigil
.
Clicking
阴云回忆
will teach you and all characters on your account Shadowlands Flying, with no level restrictions. If they're high enough to enter Shadowlands, they can fly immediately.
Where You Can and Cannot Fly in Shadowlands
Shadowlands Flying will allow you to fly in the following zones:
Bastion
Maldraxxus
Ardenweald
Revendreth
Shadowlands Flying
does not
allow you to fly in the following zones:
Oribos
The Maw
Korthia
The In-Between
You will not be able to fly from one continent to another; you will still need to use flight points to get from one Covenant zone to another.
Covenant Flying Mounts in Patch 9.1
9.1 also includes new Covenant-specific Flying Mounts, which become available at Renown 45. There is also a Renown 70 mount, and a Covenant-only mount purchased from
磨破的布料
in Korthia for 0
冥殇
and Exalted reputation with
死亡先锋军
, and a Covenant-only mount that drops off a specific Rare mount in Korthia.
If you wish to collect the flying mounts for all four Covenants, you will need to complete this requirement for each Covenant, but these mounts will be accountwide for any alts who belong to the same Covenant.
The Kyrian mounts:
极乐北风长
- a flying Aquilon Centurion mount earned at Renown 45

Ground Mounts in the Maw in Shadowlands Patch 9.1.5
As part of the opening quest line to enter Korthia, you will also gain the ability to use any ground mount in the Maw. You will be offered this quest at level 60.
Shortly after you enter Korthia for the first time on your first character, you will encounter the attendants responsible for the City of Secrets. In the quest
噬渊行者是哪位?
(fifth quest in the story line
Maw Walkers
), your anima will be analyzed. This will awaken the power of the True Maw Walker within you, allowing you to summon any of your mounts in the Maw -- and by extension, in Korthia.
This effect is not account wide, so every character who wishes to use ground mounts in the Maw will need to complete this quest. The good news is that once you've completed this once on one character, you can skip this quest line entirely by talking to
塔尔-伊纳拉
at level 60, who will offer you a chance to skip the entry quests into Korthia. This automatically opens the abilty to use ground mounts without having to repeat the actual quests.
As an added bonus, the True Maw Walker effect opens Perdition Hold and Beastwarrens in the Maw without needing to grind rep with Ve'nari.
Adjusted Riding and Flying Skill Levels 1-50
Skill Levels and Costs 1-50
Riding skill levels and costs have been adjusted in Shadowlands to account for the level squish. All of the following riding/flying skills can be trained from Flying Trainers in Shadowlands:
Rank
Speed
Type
Training cost
Required level
初级骑术
60%
Ground
10
中级骑术
100%
Ground
20
高级骑术
150%
Flight
30
大师级骑术
310%
Flight
40
The heirloom mount
代驾型摩托
still works from level 1 as normal. It is usable in all 1-10 zones, including Exile's Reach.
Artisan Riding, the 280% flying level learned at level 70 pre-squish, is not available to learn in Shadowlands. However, characters who learned it prior to the squish will retain the ability (70 translates to level 27, even too low for standard Expert Riding in Shadowlands).
Characters who learned
高级骑术
(base flying skill) in BfA are able to fly, even if their current level squishes to below level 30.
However, you will have to relearn
中级骑术
for faster ground mount speed, and
高级骑术
, the lowest level flying skill as a prerequisite to
大师级骑术
. If you learned it before going into the prepatch,
高级骑术
doesn't actually appear in your spellbook as a learned ability. If you get on a flying mount, you'll be able to fly, but there's no confirmation in your spellbook that you have the skill, and it looks like you may need to reacquire it as a prerequisite for higher level flight skills.
The retained ability to fly may have to do with having earned the achievement
向远方奔跑
for learning the Expert Riding Skill prior to the the release of Shadowlands. This achievement remains even though the Expert Riding skill doesn't show up in the spellbook. Later expansions learned flying through the Pathfinder achievements, so it makes sense that retained riding skill is actually hooked to achievements and not to the skill itself. (It also explains why you appear to "forget"
中级骑术
, since there is no achievement associated with it).
Since level 10 in Shadowlands = level 20 in the current expansion,
初级骑术
(normal riding skill) remains parallel.
Druids Need to Train Expert Riding
Druids who wish to fly will need to visit a riding trainer and pay for
高级骑术
to use their
飞行形态
to fly. This means that although Druids get
飞行形态
at level 24, they will need to wait until level 30 to get off the ground with it.
Pathfinder in Previous Expansions
You no longer need to earn the achievements
德拉诺探路者
or
破碎群岛探路者,第一章
/
破碎群岛探路者,第二章
to fly in Warlords of Draenor or Legion zones.
You will automatically be able to fly in those zones upon earning
高级骑术
(or coming into with a character 25-30 who already has flight skill). You can still earn these achievements for the mounts and other perks, but you don't need them to fly in these zones anymore.
You will still need to earn
争霸艾泽拉斯探路者,第一章
and
争霸艾泽拉斯探路者,第二章
to fly in Battle for Azeroth zones.
Flight Master's Whistle
飞行管理员的哨子
does not work in Shadowlands.
Mounts in Shadowlands
Mounts are being constantly datamined as Shadowlands development progresses. Right now we don't have information about what is required to get all of these mounts, but as we learn more, we will post more information on the following guide:

Maybe change the title to "Flying in old content redesigned in Shadowlands" or something like and change it back to what it is now as soon as there is information on the Shadowlands-pathfinder (personally, I find the title a little misleading now)

Will our new characters have to train for flying in Draenor and the Broken Isles even if we've unlocked those pathfinders prior to that change?

Interesting that right now you can get flying as soon as you hit level 60 so you can do all of Burning Crusades and Wrath with flight, but with the squish you won't get flying until the equivalent of level 80 (max level for Wrath). Why do they always do this?
Also, you might want to show the level squish on this page so everything makes more sense.

So if my character has Artisan Flying now, will that character be upgraded to max flying or dropped to the 150%?

Sounds like it is going to be a time gated rep grind to me, even worse. Stop this crap. It isn't the rep that is annoying, it is the fact that it is time gated after the rep grind. Seriously, blizz and wowhead don't get it.

Battle for Azeroth Pathfinder, Part Two will still be required to fly in BfA zones.
Wonder who the hell wants to go back and do those boring achievements.

I can tell you these facts from having access to both the beta and PTR.
The character I used has expert riding (280% on Live) Upon the copy to Beta and PTR it is still 280%. I did receive a popup quest to learn
riding again. I went to the flight trainer and completed said quest and was offered another to find the mount vendor in Elwynn Forest.
I noted that the trainer had Master riding for sale to me for 4k gold...which means another 4k from my coffers on top of the 280% riding I already paid for...
so nothing has changed for characters that have expert riding at this point... no bump to 310 from what I have seen
Also I have a test toon that is 26 in the squish and 65 prior to the squish...he can fly without the level 30 skill for flying since I already paid for it before the copy...but will have to buy it again with I find distasteful after already purchasing it.

I carried over my level 72 shaman and I could fly at the squish of level 28.

Making us all stuck at 150% flying until we fork over 5k for 310% kinda sucks, imo.
Why not make the lvl 30 flying training give us 280% instead of 150%, then make it 5k to get to the final 310%?

Would it be possible to post a copy of the Flight Paths for all the zones in Shadowlands?

I am leveling a Heralds of the Titans twink that I plan to keep at (post-squish) level 30 even after (hopefully) getting the achievement. I am eligible for 280% flying now because I am over level 70 (pre-squish). The article above states that as it stands now on the beta (which I know can change), players who have trained 150% flying have not lost it despite squishing to below 30. So what about 280%? I am currently eligible for 280% flying (which would convert to 310% after the 9.0 changes). The new 310% flying is eligible to (post-squish) level 40 (but a level 80 toon would squish to 30). So if pay the 5,000 gold I trained 280% now and do not plan to level past level 80 ("30"), will I get to keep the new 310% when I squish to level 29-30 or will it revert to 150% despite buying it because I would be below 40 until I level it to or above 40?

since Artisan Riding 300 skill is Flying 280% and costs 5k gold at lvl70 in BFA, if this is removed from the next expansion. do we get a refund of 5k per character?

sivla
You will instead train Expert Riding at level 30 from flying trainers to fly anywhere other than in Battle for Azeroth and Shadowlands. -- This is untrue for BFA, you can fly at level 30 in BFA if you have both pathfinder parts.

For me, this whole unlocking thing for flying spoils the game, I don't see why there is a need for it.
Having to grind out all the requirements to unlock it is time consuming and stops me doing the main things that I want to do ingame, so much so that I left the game for two years because I didn't want to go through the process prior to Legion.
I recently returned having missed the whole of BfA, and began by doing the Legion content, which of course meant, I didn't have to unlock flying.. But upon starting Shadowlands it's back to being chased everywhere by a multitude of mobs, which I then have to fight because they pull me off my mount, or I fight everything between me and my objective, IT'S TEDIOUS Blizzard.
And I/we have to suffer all of the above to get to level 60 before again, more of the same, while trying to complete a stupid achievement to enable flying? Who on Earth thought THAT was a good idea? not me I can tell you.
Legion was sooo much better because I DIDN'T have to suffer unlocking flying.

Am I missing something? I was expecting some details on how to accomplish flying in Shadowlands, but really didn't see anything. I'm assuming there is multiple rep goals. I know I'm getting old but I didn't think I could miss that much info in a "guide" lol.

As usual
Blizzard is highly favoring people that have the required 4 or 5 hours a night
to constantly run dungeons and raids and continually do dailies over and over to gain reputation before you can fly, or get gear or anything else for that matter. Making WoW feel more like a job than a game. I'd be happy to go back to paying $200,000K or more gold to fly. Crazy the amount of time is spent just reading how to run all the content let alone still having time to complete the content. I am sure there will be many reactions to this opinion but seriously, I still enjoy playing this game but it has just gotten so darn complicated. I can either read how to do something on Wowhead or try to actually play the game...hummmm?

So cant start flying till renown 44 then jump through hoops?....no. I'm at 25 and not sinking in weeks to catch up. Blizzard better get a better system. This daily crap gets tiresome after awhile. I'll just mess around on alts here and there and keep enjoying Hitman which is more fun that this lol.

HOW TO FLY IN SHADOWLANDS?
- First, you’ll need to work your way through the main storyline and explore all four Covenants of the Shadowlands.
- Complete all of the zones’ main quests.
- You’ll now need to reach Renown level 44. Once that’s done, from the second week of the patch dropping, Chapter 4 of the campaign, ‘The Last Sigil’ will be unlocked.
- Once this is completed, you’ll be rewarded with ‘Memories of Sunless Skies‘, a usable item that will then unlock flying completely account-wide.
IT WASN'T TOO DIFFICULT TO WRITE A SIMPLE, NICE GUIDE TO HELP, FFS.

a part in this guide is confusing
Here it states
Shadowlands Flying does not allow you to fly in the following zones:
Oribos
The Maw
Korthia
The In-Between
while here it states
Starting with Patch 9.1, all ground mounts will now be usable in The Maw after completing a quest. Flying mounts will still be grounded until you open Shadowlands Flying

Just a tip once your in the Maw try and avoid killing things so you don't start being hunted. You could finish so much more if you are not being picked up every 30 seconds. Otherwise ignore side quests and just do your Campaign quest listing.

The quest
塑造命运
appears to show up in my quest log under Chains of Domination Campaign 3/9, however this appears to not be required to complete the
最终印记
storyline (the true Campaign 3/9 required for flying).
So don't waste your time trying to complete it; if the quests for
最终印记
are not available to you, you likely need to complete your covenant questline.
