Welcome to Wowhead's guide to Shadowlands Optional Reagents. Optional reagents are crafted ingredients that you can add when crafting armor, weapons, and jewelry created with Shadowlands manufacturing professions. These include the various level of Crafter's Marks that change both the item's iLevel and the minimum level required to wear that piece of crafted gear.
For general information about professions in Shadowlands, please see our guide:
Shadowlands Professions Overview
Optional Reagents in Patch 9.2, Eternity's End
Patch 9.2 will add several new Optional Reagents that can be added to equipment recipes. In addition, Rare crafted gear will now have a second Optional Reagent slot, allowing you to add up to two Optional Reagents (please be aware that Crafter's Marks will not stack). These will be fully integrated into the guides once the patch is made live and more complete information is available.
New Crafter's Marks
Patch 9.2 will introduce the

While not exactly a crafter's mark, a third type of Optional Reagent called a

New Optional Reagents in Patch 9.2
The following Optional Reagents have been found so far in Patch 9.2. Full recipe information will be integrated into the guides once the patch goes live and information is finalized. We do not yet know all the sources for these reagent recipes.

What are Optional Reagents in Shadowlands Professions?
Optional reagents are crafted ingredients that you can add when crafting armor, weapons, and jewelry created with Shadowlands manufacturing professions. There are a few created with Inscription that can also apply to Darkmoon Cards to control the type of card created, but nearly all Optional Reagents apply to crafted armor.
Optional Reagents can add many things, including:
guarantee the initial stats of a crafted armor armor, weapon, or jewelry, eliminating selected random elements
change the item level of a crafted armor from the start
increase the iLevel and rank of Legendary base items
add gem sockets
Optional Reagents vs. Enchants
It's important to note the differences between Optional Reagents and other types of armor enhancements, such as enchants, armor kits, etc.:
Optional Reagents can only be applied when
creating
crafted armor, weapon, or jewelry.
They cannot be applied to dropped items.
They cannot be applied to crafted items after they have been created; they are part of the creation process.
They cannot be removed or changed from an existing item; they are permanent to that item.
The only way to "change" the Optional Reagents of a crafted item is to make another of the same type with different Optional Reagents.
How many Optional Reagents can I use?
Most crafted armor pieces are showing up with 1-3 Optional Reagent slots. Right now, it appears that the one slot is always reserved for Set Item Level, and the next 2 are Specify a Secondary Stat.
It isn't required to add Optional Reagents at all (hence the name). If you're just creating items to skill up, these can be left out entirely.
You also don't need to fill both Optional Materials slots; you can add just one if you prefer or lack the necessary materials. You can craft items with no Optional Reagents, but it will roll up with random stats (like how crafted items are created in previous expansions).
You cannot go back and add them in later if you leave one or more Optional Reagent slots empty.
However, you also cannot double up on a single stat. You can define up to two different secondary stats for a crafted armor or weapon item, but you cannot choose two of the same type to double up on the stat (for example, you can choose to increase Mastery and Critical Strike, but you cannot choose two Mastery optional reagents for the same item).
Categories of Optional Reagents
For every crafted piece, there are three categories of Optional Reagents that can be added.
Set Item Level - this can either be set up or down depending on the Crafter's Mark used
Specify a Secondary Stat - must be different from one another
Increase Legendary Base rank - only available on Legendary armor/jewelry base items
Quick Facts: Summary of Optional Reagents
Optional Reagents:
Apply only to player-crafted gear made with Blacksmithing, Leatherworking, Jewelcrafting, and Tailoring with Optional Reagent slots.
Are added during the creation process only, and may not be changed or removed later.
Are not required to create crafted items for skill.
Add many different types of beneficial effects.
Types of Optional Reagents
There are four basic categories of Optional Reagents: Crafter's Marks, Relics of the Past, Missives, and the Vestige of Origins.
Crafter's Marks
Crafter's Marks are Optional Reagents that change the item level and required minimum level on crafted gear. There is only one slot for setting the item level on any piece of crafted gear. Crafter's Marks can be created by most of the manufacturing professions; however, Enchanters and Inscriptionists can only make them through Crafter's Mark II.
Novice Crafter's Mark sets the item level to 87 and the required level to 50.
Crafter's Mark I sets the item level to 117 and the required level to 55.
These are usually created to
reduce
the minimum iLevel and required level of a crafted piece. This is so crafters can make gear usable for a level 50 or level 55 character.
Crafter's Mark II sets the item level to 168 and the Required Level to 60.
Crafter's Mark III sets the item level to 200 and the Required Level to 60.
Crafter's Marks II-III are used to
raise
the iLevel of a crafted piece to a level higher than the average manufacturing level. Most of the blue-quality armor and jewelry pieces for level 60s have a starting iLevel of 151. These don't change the required level of the piece -- just increases the iLevel.
Crafter's Mark of the Chained Isle sets the item level to 230 and the required level to 60.
Crafter's Marks are learned through the following:
Novice Crafter's Mark and Crafter's Mark I: profession trainers
Crafter's Mark II : Cordial with
in The Maw
Crafter's Mark III: Honored with
in Korthia
Crafter's Mark of the Chained Isle : Tier 4 research level with
in Korthia.
Relics of the Past
Relics of the Past are used to reduce both the iLevel and required level to create crafted items low-level characters can wear. Since only Shadowlands-era crafted items have Optional Reagent slots, these can only be used by crafters who can make Shadowlands gear. These are comparable to other gear you can get for that level.
Relic of the Past I - Set the Item Level to 19 and the Required Level to 14.
Relic of the Past II - Set the Item Level to 28 and the Required Level to 23.
Relic of the Past III - Set the Item Level to 39 and the Required Level to 32.
Relic of the Past IV - Set the Item Level to 48 and the Required Level to 41.
Relic of the Past V - Set the Item Level to 54 and the Required Level to 47.
Relics of the Past are learned through trainers, and may only be learned by Blacksmiths, Leatherworkers, and Tailors.
Missives
Missives are Optional Reagents that add a desirable secondary stat to a piece of crafted gear. This is great because crafted gear generally rolls up with randomized stats, with no control over the end product. Missives give some control over what stats the item will have. These are created through the Inscription profession only.
- Guarantees a crafted piece will have Critical Strike as a stat.
- Guarantees a crafted piece will have Haste as a stat.
- Guarantees a crafted piece will have Mastery as a stat.
- Guarantees a crafted piece will have Versatility as a stat.
Missives are learned through the Inscription profession trainer.
Missives are interesting because although they are Optional Reagents for most crafted gear, the are mandatory reagents when creating Legendary Armor with the Runecarver.
Vestige of Origins
is an Optional Reagent that adds 2 levels to a Legendary base item when crafted into it. This allows you to create a Rank 5 (iLevel 249) base item by adding
to a Rank 3 base item, and a Rank 6 (Level 262) base item by adding
to a Rank 4 base item.
This is learned through the recipe
, which requires Honored reputation with
. It is purchased from
for 0
.
Manufacturing Professions: Optional Reagents
All professions have some core Optional Reagents they can make. Crafter's Marks increase the Item Level of armor and can be created by all manufacturing professions. Blacksmiths, Leatherworkers, and Tailors' Relics of the Past can create Shadowlands-era items that you can adapt for lower level characters to wear. Blacksmiths, Leatherworkers, Jewelcrafters, and Tailors can also make the optional reagent to raise the iLevel and rank of Legendary items.

Seems to me, that Luxurious Feather might be made by scribes. :)

I had to swap to the WOW UI professions view instead of TSM 4's Professional view in order to apply the Crafter's Mark's. Not sure if I am missing something with TSM 4, but, I only found how to apply the Crafter's Mark after swapping views.

It appears that
匠力印记 II
can only be applied to blue crafted items. As such, Enchanters, Alchemists and Scribes are out of luck as far as this item goes in 9.0.

I just wanted to make sure, since the wording is a bit unclear: can you use Crafter's Mark's to increase the ilevel of Engineering Goggles as well? The only says BS, LW, TL, and JC gear can be upgraded

Thanks for the guide. Glad I checked, before grinding out rep with the Archivists Codex to get the Unchained Isle crafter's mark, because as a scribe it's useless.
So now it's official: no way to make a halfway decent staff for one's warlock or other character that needs them, and the chance of getting both a decent dagger AND off-hand from some drop or quest is practically nil. LOL
I guess back to grinding dailies anyway, but with a different goal: hoping a decent offhand will be available at some point as reward (been waiting a month already)...
(fun irony: an alt priest got an offhand as a reward but is looking for a dagger...too bad the two can't get married.......)
I mean honestly, is it that hard to give a STAFF as a daily reward? sigh.......
