Torghast, Tower of the Damned
Once, the Jailer kept only the most dangerous souls in the cosmos confined in this eternal prison. Now, some of Azeroth's greatest heroes are trapped here, and you'll need to rescue them from the Jailer's tower before he expends their very souls.
Quick facts:
托加斯特,罪魂之塔
was introduced in Shadowlands.
Storywise, this tower is first encountered during The Story of Revendreth, and the events within overlap with Covenant storylines.
The chapters Torghast and A Fateful Vision were removed in 9.1, with players now skipping ahead past these chapters to the Chains of Domination storyline.
For more information, check out our Torghast Overview.
Walkthrough
Summary
Sylvanas Windrunner and the Jailer, Zovaal, have sent Mawsworn to capture Baine Bloodhoof, Lady Jaina Proudmoore, Anduin Wrynn, and Thrall. It's up to you to find and rescue these Peacebringers from their prison, Torghast, Tower of the Damned.
In the
Introduction
, soon after you join a Covenant and begin your Covenant's campaign, you are summoned to Oribos by Highlord Bolvar Fordragon, who suggests you ask Ve'nari in The Maw if she can help you find Baine Bloodhoof. Ve'nari is already expecting you and she helps you access Torghast, where you rescue Baine from Warden Arkoban. You discover a strange object on the warden and soon learn it unlocks a special area in the tower, where the Runecarver is being kept chained by The Jailer, Zovaal. You help the Runecarver recover some of his memories and unshackle one of his arms. In return, he promises to help you gain more power.
In
Torghast
, you head back into the tower, this time to see if you can find any trace of Lady Jaina Proudmoore. You discover various clues that hold traces of her essence, finally using them to pinpoint her location in the tower. By the time you reach Jaina, she is confused and traumatized, not even certain at first that you're real, but you are able to rescue her and bring her back to Oribos. You return to Torghast, where a Captive Dredger tells you about the "big green fella" he saw shouting about "lock the tar", which leads you to Thrall. Once he's safe, the only person left to still find is Anduin Wrynn, but he seems to be particularly well hidden. In a vision that Bolvar Fordragon is able to summon, you witness Sylvanas Windrunner working hard to try convince Anduin to join her and The Jailer's cause. It seems they plan to use him as a weapon.
In
A Fateful Vision
, soon after the defeat of Sire Denathrius in Castle Nathria, Bolvar Fordragon is beset by flashes of horrifying visions that cause him immeasurable pain. With your help, he peers once again into Torghast, this time to witness Zovaal telling Sylvanas that her time is up - she has been unable to convince Anduin to join their side, so he has to be forced instead. Sylvanas approaches Anduin and seems determined to make him the weapon, one way or another, but surprisingly, he appears to get through to some mortal part of her that still lingers. Anduin ultimately challenges Sylvanas to make a choice, and she seems to hesitate. The vision ends, and while trying to see more, Bolvar is noticed by Zovaal who sends chains through the Shattered Helm of Domination to grip him in a chokehold. You manage to free him, and though he is shaken, Bolvar is safe... for now.
As Shadowlands began,
希尔瓦娜斯·风行者
and
典狱长
sent their Mawsworn to kidnap
Baine Bloodhoof
,
吉安娜·普罗德摩尔
,
安度因·乌瑞恩
, and
萨尔
- some of Azeroth's most heroic leaders. This story deals with your attempts to find these Peacebringers, and rescue them from their prison of
托加斯特,罪魂之塔
.
Bolvar Fordragon: I knew she would come... one day... to seize this power for herself. Instead, she has done the unthinkable. Now, she will come for them all... to finish... what she started... And break all who opposed her. Those who held Azeroth together... Will be in her sights.
Genn Greymane: No! Sylvanas!
Bolvar Fordragon: And when she comes... Our end... Begins...

You head into
噬渊
and find Ve'nari, who it seems was already anticipating your desire to enter Torghast, and has set up portal for you. Of course, she won't go in with you, but she does gift you with an
调谐碎片
that will help guide you to Baine. (

)
Ve'nari says: Torghast, eh? Once I told you that your friends were being held inside, I knew it was only a matter of time before you came to me for aid.
Ve'nari says: Because I was able to anticipate your request, it just so happens I have already acquired a portal device that leads into the tower.
Ve'nari says: I will dispense with the usual warnings and disclaimers, as your unique combination of courage and foolhardiness would render them moot.
Ve'nari says: Do not ask how it was obtained. Simply consider it a gesture of goodwill that you are now obligated to repay. I look forward to our future transactions, Maw Walker.
You take the
调谐碎片
to the Wayfinder at the entrance of Torghast, and it sends you into Arkoban Hall within the tower.
Mawsworn Guard yells: Intruders are here!
Warden Arkoban yells: Guards! It seems there are interlopers among us! To your posts!
As you fight your way through the tower, you catch the attention of
狱卒阿尔柯班
himself, and even meet him on Floor 4, but he sends his minions to intercept you as he heads further up the tower. You pursue him through his halls until you finally confront and kill him.
Warden Arkoban says: Still you continue? Very well, the scavengers will feed on your essence.
Warden Arkoban yells: Ah, the vermin have arrived. Know that none can escape these halls.
Warden Arkoban yells: The invader finally steps foot into my stage. Let us begin!
The warden has a strange object on his corpse - as you stare at it something tells you that it can help lead you to another part of the tower. You decide to bring it to Ve'nari to learn more. (
被遗忘的囚笼
) Before you leave, you find Baine, disorientated and in chains. You quickly release him, and together, you escape the tower.
Baine Bloodhoof says: I was dreaming of home... only to awaken in this place of torment.
Baine Bloodhoof says: Champion! I... I saw you escape before we were recaptured. Do you have the means to take us out of the Maw?
On your way back to
奥利波斯
, you can stop by Ve'nari to ask about the object, but she will insist you deal with Baine first.
I do, and I shall tell you after you see to it that your friend there is in Oribos.
Come back to me once he is safe.
Baine seems nervous about traveling through the waystone, but you make it through ok.
Baine Bloodhoof says: The waystone! I hope your presence allows me to travel through it as well.
Baine Bloodhoof says: I will stay close. May the Earthmother guide our path.
Baine Bloodhoof says: The waystone worked! What a... remarkable place!
Once Baine is safely with Bolvar Fordragon, you can return to Ve'nari and question her once again about the object. This time, she will say,
I believe this is a key, of sorts, to a chamber within Torghast.
Search the antechamber for a device that will accept it.
Where it leads after that... I could only speculate.
Back into Torghast's antechamber you go, to find a Domination Lock that will accept the key. Behind the door you discover a strange creature in chains, named the
刻符者
. You approach the creature to find it confused and disorientated, having been imprisoned and abused by the Jailer, Zovaal. (
囚牢深处
)
Runecarver says: One of his, are you? No. Not his. Something... else's.
Runecarver says: A mortal? No. Yes... A mortal walks the Maw, all the way to my prison. To save me? Hmm. To use me?
Runecarver says: I was used by him. The Jailer, they call him. Used to make... to make... Hmm. My memories. Did you take them? No. He took them.
Runecarver says: Used me for his purpose. Then left me here. Bereft of memory for... how long? It matter snot. Time, after all, is not a construct of Death.
Runecarver says: Maw Walker. You come. You go. To free me? Perhaps. To aid me? Yes. To aid me, as I aid you. Fate, you see, has bound us.
The Runecaver's memories were taken by Zovaal. He promises to help you if you get these memories back. (
再度苏醒
) You head out into
噬渊
and soon collect a stolen
刻符者的记忆
from
欧达力克
, one of Zovaal's lieutenants.
You bring it back to the Runecarver, who is thankful to finally be able to have the beginning of his memories again. What's more, he remembers how to help infuse some of your equipment with great power. All he needs is one hand - if you can discover a way to free him from just one of his bonds. (
被诅咒的契约
)
You go to Ve'nari for advice, and she thinks she might know a way. It's dangerous, of course. First, you will need a special vessel that can house and expel anima. She can sell you that. Once you've bought an Anima Supricifer, you can take it to Zovaal's Cauldron in
噬渊
to collect molten anima - it's so hot it should be able to melt anything, even the Runecarver's metal chains. (
机会渺茫
)
Before you go break the chains binding the Runecarver, Ve'nari has a word of warning to offer. Be careful. No creature imprisoned in the Jailer's Tower should just be trusted freely. (
脆弱的链节
) Nevertheless, you use the molten anima on one of the Runecarver's chains, allowing him to break one arm free.
Runecarver says: Yes... Yes! Bonds weakening...
Runecarver says: A taste... of freedom. A place to start.
As promised, he will use this arm to help you gain power, but for now, your Covenant calls.

However, he cannot tell where. The Tower is filled with captured souls. Perhaps if you venture back in and help free some of these poor souls, they'll be able to help. (

Unfortunately, the souls you free can't help you. After thinking the matter over, Bolvar suggests you try speaking with some Brokers instead, as they seem willing to trade anything for a price. (

From the Brokers, you are able to acquire
加密的字条
and
冰裹残骸
. You bring these items for Bolvar to study, and he tells you that the notes contain information on how to contain Jaina's power, while he can sense her magic lingering on the debris. He sends you back into Torghast, to an area where Zovaal's prisoners are relentlessly burned and smelted, to find Jaina before it's too late. (
折磨密室:吉安娜
)
Highlord Bolvar Fordragon says: The souls here are forced to burn. Smelted into raw material for the Jailer's vile creations.
As you work your way through the tower, you notice shards of ice along some walls and corridors - evidence of Jaina's magic.
You finally discover Jaina herself, being held by
破冰者特拉克图斯
. As you fight the creature, you're interrupted when Jaina breaks free of her bonds, and freezes Tractus easily. She seems confused by your presence at first, taking you for another vision sent by Zovaal to torment her, but slowly realizes that it really is you.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore yells: Enough of this!
Lady Jaina Proudmoore yells: How many times must I defeat you?
Lady Jaina Proudmoore says: What's this? Another one of your games, I suppose.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore says: Tormenting me with a vision of a trusted ally who's come to help me escape.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore says: No doubt you want me to think this portal is a way out, when in truth it leads deeper into this accursed tower. But... what choice do I have except to try?
Lady Jaina Proudmoore says: Wait. It's really you, isn't it? Yes... I saw you use the waystone to escape, <name>. It seems so long ago...
Lady Jaina Proudmoore says: If I attune my teleportation spell to your ability to leave the Maw, I can finally be free of this place!
Lady Jaina Proudmoore says: Unless... unless this is just the cruelest trick of all.
Jaina returns with you to
奥利波斯
, where she instantly starts talking about making plans to rescue
安度因·乌瑞恩
and
萨尔
... before Bolvar gently convinces her to take some time to rest and recover from her ordeal.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore says: Baine! Thank the Light you're alive!
Baine Bloodhoof says: It is good to see you safe, Jaina. Though my wounds are healing, I confess... the horrors of the Maw still haunt me.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore says: I... understand. Any news of Anduin and Thrall? We need to return to Torghast and--
Highlord Bolvar Fordragon says: With respect, Lady Proudmoore, you need to recover your strength. Let the Maw Walker resume the search for the others.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore says: Wise words, Highlord. I trust your judgment.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore says: Thank you, Maw Walker. I owe you... everything.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore says: I am in your debt, Maw Walker. Though we've been on opposites sides in the past, we now face a common enemy.
As for you, Bolvar asks if you'll search Torghast for a witness - any witness - who might be able to give you a clue to Anduin or Thrall's location. (
目击证人
) This time, you come across a
被囚的泥仆
. You release him from his chains, and he tells you about the "big green fella" he saw shouting about "lock the tar".
Captive Dredger says: The Jailer's boys took your green friend higher in the tower, they did. Nasty business! I'd tell ya more if I could, but this place is a real maze.
It's obvious the Dredger saw Thrall, and you hurry back to Bolvar to inform him.
Bolvar warns you not to let Thrall's trail go cold, and so you head straight back in until you find an item that belonged to the old Warchief - a
烧焦的图腾
. (
紧跟线索
) You bring it back to Bolvar, who is able to use it to alter the
调谐碎片
so that it can guide you to Thrall's location. (
折磨密室:萨尔
) He warns you to take care - the deeper you venture into the Jailer's Tower, the closer you get to the Jailer himself.
Highlord Bolvar Fordragon says: Each time I gaze into Torghast, I sense malevolent eyes staring back. The risk grows ever greater, but we cannot relent.
As you climb the Tower, you nearly run into Zovaal and
希尔瓦娜斯·风行者
. You quickly hide and listen to their discussion. They seem to be speaking about Anduin, who they plan to use as a weapon. Sylvanas is arguing that it would be better to convince Anduin to join the Jailer's cause willingly, and she asks to be allowed to try bring him over to their side. Zovaal agrees... for now.
The Jailer says: ...All that matters is we now possess the necessary instrument. We must begin its preparation.
Sylvanas Windrunner says: Leave him to me. You've seen what he is capable of, when he believes in the cause. A measure of patience may yield... superior results.
The Jailer says: Very well. We have our weapon. Now we shall hone it.
You keep climbing the tower until eventually Bolvar's voice echoes in your mind. He sounds concerned.
Highlord Bolvar Fordragon says: Maw Walker... Have you lost your way? A darkness... looming...
The Jailer says: An intrusion into my domain.
Highlord Bolvar Fordragon says: Be on guard! He senses us!
Almost immediately after this, you find Thrall, chained by Suppressors
Cer
,
Vellon
, and
Hersi
- and guarded by
大暴君泽里欧斯
. As you face off against the Mawsworn, Thrall calls to the elements, shooting lighting down the chains to disable his captors. You approach the former Warchief and help him up, and together, you escape Zovaal's tower.
Thrall yells: Elements... hear me. Give me the strength to...
Thrall yells: RrrraAAAARRRGH!
Thrall says: At last. The torment is over.
Thrall says: I've had enough of this place. Let's go.
You bring Thrall to
奥利波斯
- he's impressed and pleased to find a city so peaceful, as up until now his experience of the Shadowlands has been limited to Torghast and
噬渊
.
Thrall says: I have seen only the darkest reaches of the Shadowlands. It is good to know there are places of hope as well.
Thrall says: May the spirits of my ancestors be safe in realms of comfort and peace.
Thanks to your efforts, Thrall, Jaina, and Baine, are all safe.
Thrall says: My friends!
Baine Bloodhoof says: Thrall! Praise the Earthmother! I am glad of your return, brother.
Calia Menethil says: It is a relief to have you back, Thrall. I will send word to Aggra and the Regent Lord at once.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore says: I feared the worst. Baine and I both know the horrors that the Jailer inflicted.
Thrall says: The things I saw in that place. The torments I endured...
Lady Jaina Proudmoore says: ...are best not relived. At least, not now.
However, one still remains in Torghast: Anduin. Bolvar asks you to venture into a new area of Torghast, the Twisting Corridors, to search for the young king. (
狮王的线索
)
Lady Jaina Proudmoore says: Thrall, do you know where they've taken Anduin?
Thrall says: My captors spoke of a valuable prisoner held in a chamber deep within the Jailer's tower.
Thrall says: It has to be Anduin.
Baine Bloodhoof says: Highlord. You have peered into Torghast and guided the Maw Walker through its torments.
Baine Bloodhoof says: I beg you to look deeper. To find the king you once safeguarded as a boy.
Highlord Bolvar Fordragon says: What you ask... poses a terrible risk. To all of us.
Within the Twisting Corridors, you discover a
皇家戒指
, a
雄狮纹章
, and a
圣光灌注长链
. You bring these clues to Bolvar, who is deeply concerned by the fact that you are unable to find Anduin himself. Though it's dangerous, he thinks you need to use the
碎裂的统御头盔
once again to peer into the Tower and see if you can locate Anduin that way. (
王入敌手
)
It works, and you witness an exchange in which Sylvanas is trying to convince Anduin to join the Jailer's cause willingly, arguing that the entire system of Life and Death is unjust, and that she and Zovaal are planning to rip it all down and build something new - something better. Anduin is naturally skeptical, and challenges her on her supposed belief in free will. Sylvanas counters that there is no free will - in fact, that injustice seems to be one of the flaws that she sees in the current system.
Sylvanas: I do hope you've settled in. The accommodations are a bit...sparse, I know.
Anduin: Where are the others? Are they safe?
Sylvanas: Safe? No, I wouldn't say any of them are...safe.
Anduin: I am so tired of your games.
Sylvanas: As you wish.
Sylvanas: No more secrets. No more lies. You are a weapon we will use to achieve our ends.
Anduin: I will not become an instrument of death.
Sylvanas: So you favor...life, is that it? That momentary flicker. Every cruel second spent delaying the inevitable in an endless war that you, like every Wrynn before you, will not survive.
Sylvanas: You know the truth. Nothing is fair. Not life, not death.
Sylvanas: So we're going to tear it all down.
Anduin: And what purpose will that serve? Everyone suffers, Sylvanas. But destroying everything will not take away the pain.
Sylvanas: Ah, you misunderstand. We're breaking a system that has always been flawed, and remaking it into one that is just.
Anduin: Do you expect me to believe that, after all this time, you've been fighting for justice?
Sylvanas: How can I convince you? From our first breath to our last, every decision is made for us. Then the afterlife decides what eternity we must endure. We can't even choose who we... We couldn't control anything. But through the Jailer, control of our fate will at last be possible.
Anduin: Look around you! At what, and who you've joined. What makes you believe you're not just a weapon to achieve his ends?
Sylvanas: You have a choice to consider. Join us willingly...or be made to serve.
Anduin: I thought you believed in free will, Sylvanas.
Sylvanas: We've never had free will, Little Lion. But that...is about to change.
Your friends are naturally shaken by what you've all seen. They wonder at how Anduin can possibly be used as a weapon, and are even more determined that you must find the young king and bring him home.
Highlord Bolvar Fordragon says: That is... all I can see.
Baine Bloodhoof says: Anduin... a weapon? What could she mean?!
Lady Jaina Proudmoore says: At least he's alive and seemingly unharmed. Whatever the Banshee is after, he will not give in.
Calia Menethil says: The Light is strong with Anduin. I know his heart will see him through this.
Taelia Fordragon says: Sylvanas was toying with him. She spoke of breaking everything. She couldn't mean that... could she?
Highlord Bolvar Fordragon says: I do not know. But we must be cautious. Deliberate.
Highlord Bolvar Fordragon says: The Jailer's malevolence permeates everything in that tower. If he believes his prize is in jeopardy, he may decide to... discard it.
Thrall says: Then we must remain patient. Maw Walker, continue your efforts to undermine the Jailer's cause.
Thrall says: When the time comes, we will find Anduin... and bring him home.

Bolvar explains that his visions of Torghast are what's causing his intense pain. He can sense a mourneblade being forged within
典狱长
's Tower. Jaina, whose love
Arthas
was once destroyed by the mourneblade Frostmourne, is understandably horrified.
Thrall says: What is it, Highlord? What do you sense?
Highlord Bolvar Fordragon says: A weapon... forged in the fires of Torghast. A mourneblade is born.
Jaina Proudmoore says: A... mournblade? On, no...
Taelia Fordragon says: Anduin's still captive there! Has something happened to him, father?
Jaina Proudmoore says: I fear for Anduin as well. But is it safe for the Highlord to peer inside? The toll it takes on him...
Highlord Bolvar Fordragon says: There is a price to be paid for communing with that darkness again. But I must see. We all must know!
Though it will cost Bolvar, you need to know what's going on, and whether
安度因·乌瑞恩
is safe. Once again, you peer into Torghast.
In the vision that follows, you see
希尔瓦娜斯·风行者
bringing the news of
德纳修斯大帝
's capture to the Jailer, Zovaal, as he oversees the forging of the weapon Kingsmourne, a mourneblade forged from Shalamayne, the blade of Anduin's father,
瓦里安·乌瑞恩国王
.
Lore Spotlight: Kingsmourne and Shalamayne
Shalamayne was a legendary sword weilded by Anduin Wrynn's father, King Varian Wrynn. Years ago, in a plot to weaken him and take the kingdom, the black dragon
奥妮克希亚
used magic to split Varian into two people. During this time, Jaina Proudmoore obtained twin Night Elven blades, Shalla'tor and Ellemayne, which were forged during the War of the Ancients. She granted these blades to each aspect of Varian, to use in the fight against Onyxia. When Varian became one person again, the twin blades were forged into a single weapon - Shalamayne. After Varian died, the blade passed down to Anduin, and went with him when he was captured by the Jailer's forces at the start of Shadowlands.
The fact that Kingsmourne is forged from Shalamayne was
officially confirmed
by World of Warcraft's Narrative Lead Steve Danuser on Twitter in April, 2021.
Sylvanas assumes Denathrius will be rescued, but Zovaal dismisses him as having served his purpose, and instead indicates to Sylvanas that her time is up on convincing Anduin - he needs to be brought over to their cause whether he's ready to do it willingly or not.
Sylvanas: Sire Denathrius has been taken prisoner. What is our plan to recover him?
Jailer: Every soul has its purpose. Denathrius has fulfilled his.
Jailer: We must forge our next weapon.
Sylvanas: He is not ready.
Jailer: Then a more direct approach is necessary. We have not come this far for you to falter now. You know what must be done.
The scene changes and we watch Sylvanas approaching Anduin once again. She seems to be giving him one last chance to join the Jailer willingly, but this time, Anduin turns it around. He appeals to the small shred of mortality still lingering in Sylvanas, and challenges her to make a choice. In the final moments of the cinematic, Sylvanas is holding up Kingsmourne and pointing it at Anduin, but for the first time, we see her uncertain.
Anduin: Ah... there she is again. You know, these endless lectures of yours...
Sylvanas: ... have failed to convince you. Regardless, the conversation is over. One way or another, we will have you.
Sylvanas: So I will offer this... one last time. Join our cause, or be made to serve.
Anduin: What kind of choice is that? Why even give me...
Anduin: ... It's the choice you never had. Despite all your grand designs, there's still some shred of your mortality haunting you. As if the Banshee Queen hasn't entirely eclipsed the Ranger-General.
Sylvanas: Don't.
Anduin: Now I understand why you brought me here. Why you tried so hard to persuade me. Because if you can get me to let go of hope, you finally can too.
Sylvanas: Enough!
Sylvanas: Submit! You are only making this harder on yourself.
Anduin: Not harder on me... right now, you, with all the power... how would you use it?
Sylvanas: I've not come this far to falter now.
Anduin: Then why do you hesitate?
Anduin: Make your choice, Sylvanas Windrunner.
Bolvar is livid to see Anduin in Sylvanas's control like that. You give him a moment to stew, then you ask him what comes next. (
哀伤剑的诞生
