Venthyr Unholy Death Knight Covenant Abilities
Venthyr Death Knight Class Ability:
The Venthyr Class Ability for all Death Knights is
. This is an AoE cooldown that also generates significant amount of Runic Power. It hits a total of 9 times (there's an initial tick when you activate the ability) and scales with our mastery
. Every time it deals damage, it generates 3 Runic Power, up to a maximum of 15 Runic Power. The maximum only applies on overall damage tick, meaning that it can generate up to 15 Runic Power
every second
. On single target, this means that you'd generate 27 Runic Power total (+10 from the rune used on the ability). In AoE, it's 135 Runic Power total (again +10 for rune).
This spell is solid in single target, having the highest damage output of any Covenant Ability (as long as your mastery is higher than your haste). The Runic Power is also nice on single target but truly shines in AoE. You'll often be able to use this ability in conjunction with adds, fully taking advantage of the AoE damage and Runic Power gain. It's in these AoE scenarios that the ability excels, allowing you to spam
back-to-back.
Venthyr Death Knight Signature Ability:
This ability is a teleport with a 1.5 seconds channel. The channel does present a nuisance but the spell is still solid for us. Death Knights are notorious for bad mobility and this does help. It's especially good when you need to move across fire or obstacles on the ground, or if you're moving a large distance. The larger the distance, the less of a penalty from the required channel.
Venthyr Conduit for
- Simple damage increased with an additional dodge increase. Okay for AoE and is a possible pick for Mythic+. The dodge doesn't really do anything for us but that's fine.

Venthyr Exclusive Legendary for Unholy Death Knight
NEW Venthyr Legendary
: When
ends, deal damage to up 5 nearby enemies and heal you for 25% of the damage dealt. The damage is increased by 2% for every 1 Runic Power spent while
is active.
A solid legendary in AoE scenarios. It's not unreasonable to expect up to 360% modifiers to the end blast. Unfortunately, the legendary only really shines in AoE and is lackluster for single target. One of the more highly tuned covenant legendaries but still far from being competitive with our best choices.
Other Legendary Interactions for Venthyr Unholy Death Knights
There are no other interactions with our Legendaries and the Venthyr Covenant.

Nadjia is generally the most versatile and good choice. Theotar is a viable option for Mythic+ content.

Venthyr Unholy Death Knight Soulbinds
4 important Soulbind Traits:
- A solid DPS trait in pure single target. Also works great in mythic + since you'll generate stacks more quickly by killing mobs. It's important that you don't stay out of combat for too long since you'd then lose the stacks you generate.
- Multiple benefits from this spell. Both the Well Fed and Flask buffs are solid, but it's the weapon enchant effect that's the most important. Our Runeforges are much more powerful than regular weapon enchants, making this ability more potent for Death Knights. It has the drawback of sitting at the end of a path with only a single Potency Conduit, so we do need to compare the strength of the spell versus picking up an extra Potency.
- Solid single target DPS spell. Doesn't scale at all in AoE but is close to
in pure single target,
- Generally a 20% increased critical strike for 10 seconds at the end of
(assuming your stats are good with crit above versatility). Solid trait that gives a good boost to our secondaries. Unfortunately, it's on a 80 second timer which doesn't align well with any of our cooldowns (in single target). For AoE, the cooldown is reduced sufficiently to bring great value from this trait.
Nadjia brings good damage in both single target and AoE. Maybe most importantly, it's consistent damage that isn't proc based. You can expect the same good damage output independently of movement or mechanics. Overall the best soulbind for Venthyr.
4 Traits to consider for Theotar.
- A great damage increase when you can make use of it. We love mastery and this spell provides a significant amount of it. However, movement can easily force us out of the umbrella, greatly reducing its effectiveness. This makes the spell less versatile.
- Increasing the effect of your combat potions is a strict DPS increase. However, it doesn't compete with the power of one of our Potency Conduits. Since this spell lies on a path with only a single Potency Conduit, it isn't picked.
- Versatility to both you and your team is a solid boost, both in DPS and survivability.
- Effectively another flask in a way. Gives a nice amount of stats but unfortunately not always the stat you are looking for.
Solid soublind that has a small liability due to the restricted AoE of
. Still a good soulbind overall.
3 Traits to look out for in this Soulbind.
- A really strong Trait if you can enable it with interrupting. Generally mostly useful in Mythic+.
- This ability probably reminds you of the
Azerite trait from BFA. It will be a strong DPS increase if you can stay healthy. Somewhat unreliable but overall a good trait.
- Flat damage increase that can scale up to 3% with 3 nearby enemies. Overall quite a weak soulbind spell, especially in single target.
General Draven overal doesn't have that compelling soulbind spells. You can pick up efficient double potency but the damage simply isn't there. I'd say he's the worst Venthyr soulbind overall.
Venthyr Unholy Death Knight Covenant Rotation Changes
As usual, this page only highlights the specific use case of the Class and Signature Abilities. To see how they fit within the context of the entire spec, we encourage you to check the other pages in the guide related to the context you are looking for:
Unholy Death Knight Rotation Guide
should be used on cooldown in single target. It can be worth it to delay it for a wave of adds in order to gain value from the increased damage and Runic Power gain. For mythic +, try and use this as much as possible. It's generally not worth to hold it for that one big pick, much more useful to fully utilise it and press it when it becomes ready! You can start by tabbing 2
, popping your cooldowns followed by
and
. Coming out of this spam, you move directly into your
window.
Good piece of mobility that is mainly used in one of two scenarios. If you need to move a large distance you use the teleport to help cover a lot of the ground. If you need to move across some obstacle and utilize the teleport to do so. Do use the ability whenever you can extract value from it! If you've picked up
, you can use it offensively to interrupt a pack of mobs!
Venthyr Unholy Death Knight Talent Builds
The Venthyr Covenant doesn't synergize specifically well with any given talent.

Since
scales with mastery, it will increase the value of this stat slightly. However, this impact will be small and most likely won't affect your stat weights significantly.
Double Legendaries for Venthyr Unholy Death Knight
Patch 9.2 adds the option of using two legendaries at the same time, with the restriction that one of them is your Covenant legendary. This change empowers Venthyr Unholy Death Knight even more. You can learn more about it in our Legendary Guide.

Please stop using Bloodmallet as a form of charting DPS comparisons. While it seems like a good idea, the problem is in the fact that they don't adjust their Sims based on certain combinations. Directly from their Website:
"Secondary stats aren't changed during simulation, but some talents might favor a different distribution.
Different Covenants might synergize with talents differently, but aren't changed during simulation.
Soulbinds might affect talents, but aren't changed during simulation.
Legendaries might support specific talents. So consider your result legendary specific.
Conduits might affect the worth of talents. But yet again Conduits aren't changed during this simulation."
So, a Sim simply has one preset combination and that's how they determine their graphs. This does not necessarily mean it's reflecting the best options on each Sim for each object. Often times the choices on Bloodmallet that they make in Talents is NOT what is recommended on this website, which simply means the Sim data would not be relevant at all.
An example of this is you recommend Infected Claws/Bursting Sores/Pestilent Pustules/Unholy Pact/Unholy Assault for a M+ Build.
The other one you recommend is Infected Claws/Unholy Blight/Pestilent Pustules/Unholy Pact/Army of the Damned.
The ONLY build they use in their Sims is: All Will Serve/Unholy Blight/Soul Reaper/Unholy Pact/Army of the Damned.
This is 2 talents different than either of your recommendations, which means the values given from their Sims are different than what somebody would get using your recommendations.
To be fair, Bloodmallet is a great tool for easy/quick comparison (like Noxxic was) but it fails to have the depth needed to be used for DPS comparison charts. Another of it's now-problems is that it only uses the Emeni Soulbind from Necrolords in all other Sims. Yes, it would take a lot of power to keep up Sim data for each Soulbind, but it's just further reasoning that Bloodmallet cannot be used to depict accuracy thanks to how many moving parts there are and that each Sim is run with a singular Build, regardless of AoE or ST. (Using Unholy DK as my example for this, have not looked at other classes.)
So, please, stop referencing Bloodmallet in Guides because the information provided by it is so limited compared to the actual options.
