Welcome to Wowhead's Windwalker Monk Arena PvP Guide, up to date for 9.2! In this section, we cover how gear works in PvP in Shadowlands, the best stat priority for Windwalker Monks in PvP, the best pieces of gear and legendaries for Windwalker Monks in arena PvP, as well as the best enchants to use on your gear. Gearing plays an important role in arena PvP in Shadowlands, and stats are again taken into effect when you enter a PvP instance. With new gear being added to the game in every patch, this up-to-date guide will help you decide on which pieces to prioritize obtaining as a Windwalker Monk in PvP.

Windwalker Monk PvP Gear
In Shadowlands, your endgame gear is obtained by earning weekly rewards from the Great Vault and from PvP Vendors. 9.1 we saw additional upgrading added and in 9.2 we saw the return of tier sets.

Windwalker Monk PvP Stat Priority
The stat priority has not changed, except Critical Strike has become a bit more of a valuable stat since they buffed it in PvP. I also recommend wearing your highest item level gear if it does not have Haste on it.
Versatility > Mastery=Agility > Critical Strike > Haste
The reason you want
a lot
of Versatility is because in PvP you want to take the least amount of damage as possible, especially as a Monk. Technically point for point you gain more damage value from Mastery but survivability is more important. You stack Mastery over Haste and Critical Strike because, in case you did not know, Haste does not affect WW’s global cooldowns - that's right. So Haste is far lower of a priority in PvP than flat damage increases like Versatility and Mastery.
There is a new Diminishing Returns effect to stats in Shadowlands which you can read about here.
Essentially when you get too much of one stat, you start needing more of it to get its effectiveness, but considering the amount of Haste you have already in PvP from

and just how important having a lot of Versatility is due to the PvP set bonus, you are not really worrying about the DR to stats much.
You might ask, "Why wouldn’t I want more Critical strike even over Mastery? Wasn’t it buffed?" While on one hand it is true that Critical hitting during your burst can be game changing now that it’s buffed, on the other hand when you fail to Critical strike it’s wasted damage potential you could’ve had just by having more Mastery. While over the course of a match Critical strike might overall generate more damage, it’s in those burst windows where the extra damage really matters for scoring a kill. It’s a hard thing to consider as of right now but in time we will know. Just know it is safe to keep stacking Mastery.
Haste does have a use other than generating energy and making your attacks faster - it also lowers the cooldowns on

. This is why you run

to have more balanced stats while stacking Versatility and Mastery.
Optimally Gearing
In 9.1 gearing became far easier since 100% of the PvP gear you can purchase from the Conquest vendor is just the highest item level gear you can obtain in PvP which makes it indisputably the best. The new weekly chest, also makes gearing easier because it gives you the option to pick a piece of gear from as many options as you farmed for the week. That being said, gaining as much Versatility as possible is the goal, and PvP gear is going to be your likely outlet to obtain it. You will be using PvP gear in nearly every slot due to its heavy Versatility.

Windwalker Monk Trinkets
PvP trinkets have been significantly buffed with the addition of the set bonus as stated before, now when you have two PvP trinkets equipped you will be gaining 40% more effectiveness from the damage and healing portion of Versatility, That, paired with the fact that PvE trinkets have been significantly nerfed in PvP, makes them pull ahead in nearly all situations with possible outliers we’re unsure of as of right now.
Without a doubt currently, this is the trinket setup you will be using:

because the base stat it gives you, Critical Strike, is more valuable than Haste. Additionally, the effect of the badge is very strong and consistent, being a 1 minute cooldown essentially being able to line up with every

One very notable legendary that you will want to have alongside your main legendary is

Covenant Legendaries
We'll talk about Kyrian first since the Kyrian legendary is the only good one.

Is very simple but strong, it gives you an extra Xuen. This Xuen is notably weaker than your own

but is still very strong as just getting for free when paired with

Venthyr was looking promising with
罪邪古训
but it was swiftly nerfed by half due to Mistweaver Monks. Previously we could see this legendary reducing the cooldown of
陨落僧众
to nearly a minute would make it very powerful now the playstyle you would have to enact to get the cooldown to even two minutes would just not be worth it. This is the weakest of the four.
Night Fae gets
妖魂祥和
which can add up to some meaningful damage ONLY in stun chains though, which at that point if you just went Necrolord you would see double the results in the same scenario. You might think this legendary would also make you do more consistent damage but then you'd have to imagine a scenario where your opponents are standing still on your faeline not moving at all. They would have to buff the base Night Fae ability to ever make you consider this.
Necrolord also didn't get much worth mentioning.

is a cheap RNG mechanic that is highly inconsistent and can sometimes proc when you have 0 damaging abilities off cooldown making it useless. BUT it also can proc during your burst window which would extend the duration of your already existing
骨尘酒
. Or maybe your opponent is waiting for you to use
骨尘酒
to counter with abilities like
心灵尖啸
or
铁木树皮
thinking your proc was your actual
骨尘酒
giving you ample opportunity to take advantage of their mistakes. This ends up making the arguably most useless on paper legendary one of the more useful because of the nature of PvP and the mind games involved.
Tier Sets
2-Set -

- Increases Fists of Fury damage by 40%.
4-Set -

- After 10 offensive abilities, your next 3 offensive abilities deal an additional 22% damage.
On the surface, you see damage increases and get excited but out of the two only the 2-set is worth going for as of right now because a 40% increase is just huge. The 4-set is a very complicated set to talk about for it would require you to set up 10 globals in advance before you burst which COULD in theory be a big deal for Windwalkers in this patch. On the other hand it could also just be completely unreasonable to consistently set it up in the windows you're looking for because the buff does not last forever so the 4-set is one that needs to be tested first.
2h Vs. 1h
As you may know, WWs are now able to equip 2 handed weapons again so now you have the question - which is better? In Warlords of Draenor it was situational because of a passive talent that gave you benefits to using each style, but that is not the case in Shadowlands for that does not exist. One handers are in most situations way better as far as our current knowledge is. Not only do you gain an extra enchant but you gain many auto attacks because when you cast Spinning Crane Kick and Fists of Fury it actually resets the timer on your auto attacks, meaning you'd lose many auto attacks using a 2h. However, if you have a higher ilvl 2h than your 1hs with good stats, go ahead and use it.
Enchants and Gems
There are a lot more enchants this expansion but they’re easy to figure out. Weapons in particular though have more breathing room, one enchant in particular can be quite niche because

can kill totems as of right now.
