Welcome to this guide on how to use
Wipefest
! We're going to learn how to use Wipefest to easily find potential problem areas while raiding. We'll start by making sure our logs are available on Warcraft Logs. Then, we'll dive into an example fight to see what analysis Wipefest has to offer. We'll also see how subscribers can analyse an entire report of fights at once. After that, we'll look at how we can find example logs where groups have performed really well on a particular mechanic. Finally, we'll look at how to setup and use the
Wipefest Discord bot
to watch us raid, providing us with feedback after every pull.
What is Wipefest?
Wipefest is a website that will analyze your raid encounters to give you a high-level overview of a fight, while highlighting potential problem areas. Wipefest can help you understand the order of major boss abilities within a fight, as well as the major actions that your fellow raid members are taking to try to defeat the encounter. It can help you organize raid cooldowns, check who is dying to what, work out phase timings, and more! Wipefest tries to make analyzing combat logs easier, by providing the answers to common questions, such as "Who is standing in the fire?", "How many interrupts are we missing?", or "How many people are soaking this mechanic?". You can also analyze combat logs from other guilds, to work out what your best tactic could be.
Getting Started
Wipefest uses data from Warcraft Logs to build your fight summaries, so the first step to using Wipefest is ensuring that your logs are available on Warcraft Logs.
Uploading Your Logs
If your guild already logs, then you're most of the way there. Simply copy the Warcraft Logs URL from the address bar of your browser (such as
https://www.warcraftlogs.com/reports/FTdm9fHMZXCP7ADy
or
https://www.warcraftlogs.com/reports/FTdm9fHMZXCP7ADy#fight=9
) into the
Wipefest Link Search
page. You can also find a guild's reports by searching for them on the
Wipefest Guild Search
page.
If you don't have any uploaded logs, then you will need to record and upload your own. To make sure that your logs have enough data in them, you will need to enable
Advanced Combat Logging
, which you can find in
Game Menu
->
System
->
Network
.
Then, type "/combatlog" in-game. This causes all of your combat data to be written to a file on your computer. Once you've pulled a few bosses, you'll be ready to upload this file to Warcraft Logs. To do this:
Create a Warcraft Logs account
Download the Warcraft Logs Uploader
Open the uploader, sign in, and select
Upload a Log
Locate your combat log file (by default, this is
Logs/WoWCombatLog.txt
in your WoW installation folder), and upload it
Every time you re-open WoW or log out, combat logging will be disabled. You have to re-enable it by typing "/combatlog". There are addons that can automate this for you, such as
Loggerhead
.
Searching Wipefest
Once your logs are available on Warcraft Logs, there are 3 ways for you to find your fights on Wipefest:
Copy and paste the Warcraft Logs URL into the
Link Search
Find your guild's reports using the
Guild Search
Find your character's parses using the
Character Search
Once you have chosen the fight that you want to analyze, Wipefest will build and display a summary of the fight.
Your Summary
Wipefest separates your summary into two main sections:
Insights
and
Events
, as well as giving you options to show/hide certain events, or to ignore anything that happened after a certain number of deaths. We're going to use
this Heroic Maut kill
as an example.
Insights
Insights appear at the top of your summary, and aim to answer common questions that people will have about a particular encounter. For example,
Maut
might show the following insights:
Some of these insights, such as Healthstones, Combat Potions, and Corruption, will appear on all fights. The rest, are specific to
Maut
.
Clicking on an insight may expand it to reveal more information. For example:
This simple insight shows you which players were hit by
Black Wings
. More complicated insights might show you interrupt rotations, soaking groups, or how many debuff stacks tanks are swapping on.
Percentiles
You'll notice that many of the insights have a number between 0 and 100 displayed to the left of their title. In our example, it was
81
. This number is a
percentile
. If you are familiar with percentiles on Warcraft Logs, these will be familiar to you.
This number represents how well your group has performed on a particular mechanic. The higher the number, the better the performance. In our example, it means that we have taken less damage from
Black Wings
than
81%
of successful heroic kills in the past week. This is important information because it provides context. Even though we have taken damage from
Black Wings
, it lets us know that, actually, a lot of groups take damage from this ability, and we're doing much better than most of them. Instead, we should focus on improving the mechanics that scored low percentiles.
The data for these insights is built from a random sample of successful kills from Warcraft Logs in the past 7 days, and is re-generated every day.
Some insights don't have a percentile. This is usually because the insight is purely informational, and may vary based on tactics (so it wouldn't make sense to assign a score to it).
Weights
You'll also notice that the insights section has a message at the top that says the insights are ordered based on mechanical importance, and that the most important mechanics are at the top. This means that, if you want to improve, it would be best to focus on the insights near the top that have low scoring percentiles.
The weighting of the insights is calculated every day, based on the data that is collected to calculate the percentiles. Once the percentiles are calculated, the algorithm then finds the top 50% of fights based on average percentile (i.e. the cleanest kills). Of this top 50%, the average percentile for each insight is then used as the weight. If this weight is low, it means that the insight didn't need to score highly for a team to kill the boss cleanly. However, if this insight is high, then it means that the cleanest kills usually performed this particular mechanic very well.
If a boss did not have enough data for a particular difficulty, then the insights won't be displayed in weight order. For example, this can happen during initial mythic progress, when not enough guilds have killed a particular boss yet.
Player Contributions
If you click on the
By Player
tab under
Insights
, you can view a chart that aims to show each player's individual contributions to the fight, spread across multiple mechanics. This should be helpful in situations where, for example, you have a feeling that a certain player is consistently good at dodging fire and helping to soak, and you want to check their contribution to multiple mechanics against the rest of the raid group.
For example,
N'Zoth
is a fairly complicated fight with a lot of mechanics. For this fight, players are scored negatively for taking damage or getting mind-controlled, and positively for using Healthstones and potions, for interrupting, and for soaking:
This would be difficult to put together manually.
As of writing, this feature is in
beta
, and is subject to change. It is currently only available to Wipefest subscribers.
Death Threshold
On wipes, it can be common for the raid to suicide when it is clear that they are no longer able to defeat the encounter. This then involves players being hit by mechanics that they normally wouldn't. To exclude these events from the timeline and the insight calculations, you can specify a death threshold. For example, if your raid typically calls for a wipe after 2 deaths, then you can set your death threshold to 2. This ensures that, on wipes, events after 2 deaths are ignored, and your insights will be more accurate.
Timeline
Below the insights is a timeline of Events. You can swap between
Timeline
and
Table
views for this, using the tabs.
The
Timeline
view shows events side-by-side, with events that the raid had some control over displayed on the left, and events that the raid had little control over displayed on the right. The
Table
view shows events on top of each other, and is better suited for smaller screens.
Let's take a look at the start of the fight:
We can see that this group started by casting
Time Warp
, and then the boss cast his first major ability:
Devour Magic
.
Events are grouped into "Phases" that can be collapsed and expanded by clicking on them. If we collapse all phases except for phase 2, we see this:
This gives us quite a bit of information. Firstly, we notice that a
Dark Manifestation
is casting
Dark Offering
. This is giving
Maut
more mana and extending the duration of this phase. Ideally, all
Dark Manifestation
adds would be killed before phase 2 starts. We then see that the raid starts taking frequent damage from
Forbidden Mana
. This happens whenever a raid member collides with a mana orb, which we can see the timing of as they gain the
Forbidden Mana
debuff. Mirha soaks the first one, followed by Syné. This raid damage can be reduced by intercepting the orbs straight away. We take quite a big hit from the first one, so maybe we could have intercepted it sooner. Alongside these, we can see the major healing cooldowns that we are casting to counteract the incoming raid damage: Zenami starts with
Incarnation: Tree of Life
, followed by Lambkorma's
Power Word: Barrier
, and so on.
If we were looking at this log to plan for our own pulls, we could take inspiration for a healing cooldown rotation, or for which classes might be good for soaking the mana orbs.
Filters
To reduce clutter, not all events are shown in the timeline by default. If there are particular mechanics that you want to get more information about, you can enable them using the filter menu on the left. At the top of the filter menu is a search box that can make it easier to find the abilities you are looking for. We can use the filters to hide everything except for Healthstones, Healing Potions, and Personal Defensives. Click on a filter to toggle its visibility,
Our timeline now shows us what our raid team was doing to help themselves stay alive during phase 2, which is the most damage-intensive part of the encounter.
When you toggle filters, the URL in the address bar is updated accordingly. This means that you can share the URL with other people, and they will be able to see the same events that you were seeing.
Multi-Pull Analysis
Wipefest subscribers get access to a feature that allows you to analyse an entire night of fights at once, and provide aggregated insights so that you can see how well you've performed in total, as well as letting you know how your percentiles changed (hopefully improved) from fight to fight as the night progressed.
To access this feature, navigate to a report on Wipefest. If you are a logged-in subscriber, you will see an
Analyse all pulls
button.
Clicking the
Analyse all pulls
button will place your report in the analysis queue. Reports typically take less than a minute to be analysed. You can see the progress of this analysis as it happens.
Once the report has been analysed, you will be able to choose between different bosses within the report.
For each boss, you can then choose an
Overall
view or an
Individual Fights
view. The
Overall
view lets you see the aggregated insights for that boss for the entire night, and the
Individual Fights
view lets you quickly click between different pulls to see the insights for one pull at a time.
In our example, let's look at the
Overall
insights for
Carapace of N'Zoth
. The percentiles shown are an average of the percentiles each insight scored across all pulls. If we look at the
Madness Bomb
insight, we can see how well we've been able to avoid the splash damage from
Madness Bomb
explosions.
The chart shows how our percentile score for this insight has changed pull-by-pull. We can see that, each pull, we perfomed a little bit better. Note that this chart shows the
percentile
and not the
damage taken
. Because our aim is to reduce the amount of damage we take, our percentile increases as that damage is reduced. So, while the line goes up, that actually represents our damage taken going down. The blue line on the chart represents the 50th percentile, which is the average performance for a mechanic. If we score above this blue line, that means we are performing better than 50% of guilds on that mechanic.
We can also view an aggregation of player contributions for a fight by clicking on the
By Player
tab in the
Insights
section.
The contributions for each player/mechanic are averaged across the pulls that the player was present for. This is to make it easier to understand how players performed even if they weren't in the group for every pull. This can be a really useful guide to see which players are contributing to different mechanics, especially on progress bosses.
Beneath the
Insights
section is the
Deaths
section. This shows you the first 5 deaths for each pull on that boss. Similarly to the timeline, clicking on a death will let you see further information about it.
When browing
Individual Fights
, you can still get to the regular fight summary page (with the full timeline) by clicking the
View a full timeline of the fight
link in the lower-left.
Statistics & Top Logs
If you are struggling on a particular mechanic, and consistently getting a low percentile on a certain insight, you can go to
the statistics page
to find the best performing logs for any mechanic. Pick the boss that you are interested in, and scroll down to find the relevant mechanic. Each mechanic has a chart that shows the performance of groups across each difficulty. It also has a table of the top ranking logs (in the sample) for each difficulty. Clicking on one of these logs will take you to the fight summary page, where you can dig into it deeper and discover any tactical differences or improvements that you might want to make.
For example, if you were struggling to deplete
Maut's
mana shield before the end of his
Obsidian Skin
cast, you might want to look at logs with the fastest phase 2 times, to find out when they are using their damage and healing cooldowns, and how they are managing the various mechanics that will give
Maut
more mana.
Private Logs
Due to restrictions on the data that we can retrieve from Warcraft Logs, your logs must be
public
or
unlisted
to be analyzed by Wipefest.
Discord Bot
You can also access Wipefest data straight from Discord, using the
Wipefest Discord Bot
!
Once the bot has been added to your server, simply type
!wipefest
to find out what commands you can run:
"Woah! You're not actually expecting me to type any of those commands, are you?". Don't worry, the easiest way to use the Wipefest bot is to send a Warcraft Logs link as a message to your channel. The bot will respond with the relevant Wipefest link for that report, as well as the commands that you can run for that fight:
You can then copy and paste the commands. The summary command will report a brief summary of the insights and deaths within a fight.
If you execute the
listen
command, then Wipefest Bot will start listening to your report. Whenever it detects a new fight, it will post a summary. This is great for quick log analysis while live-logging.
The
--death-threshold
part of the command indicates how many deaths are allowed before events will start being ignored. You should set this to whatever number is appropriate for your raid (typically, the usual number of deaths that will need to happen for your team to decide to wipe the encounter and try again). If you set this to 0, then no events will be ignored. Events are never ignored on a kill.
If Wipefest Bot doesn't detect a new fight within 20 minutes, it will stop listening to the report.
Wipefest Bot is particularly helpful when combined with the Warcraft Logs Discord webhook, which will automatically post Warcraft Logs links to your server whenever your guild starts logging. You can setup a webhook for your Discord server by
following the instructions here
, using the webhook from the "Discord" tab of your guild page on Warcraft Logs:
How to Subscribe
As mentioned earlier, some bonus features are only available to Wipefest subscribers. This is to help ensure that server, hosting, and development costs can be met, and so that the project can continue to live for years to come. Subscription is handled via Patreon. To gain access to bonus features, users will need to pledge to Wipefest on Patreon, login to Wipefest via Battle.Net, and then connect their Wipefest account with their Patreon account. This is a fairly simple process, and can be done in just a few clicks.
1. Becoming a Patron
The first step is to become a Patron. You can do that by visiting
Wipefest's Patreon page
.
Then, scroll down to select a membership level.
Patreon will ask you for your payment information. It's worth noting that Patreon will take your membership fee immediately, and then again on the 1st of every month. If it's very close to the start of the next month, you might want to wait a few days to avoid being charged twice within a short period of time.
Once you have finished, you should see the following message:
2. Logging into Wipefest
Once you are a patron, the next step is to log into Wipefest. You can do this by clicking on the "Login" link in the top-right corner of the
Wipefest home page
.
Wipefest uses Battle.Net to login. This means that it doesn't need to store any of your personal information, such as password or email address (check out
Wipefest's privacy policy
for more information). You will be presented with the following screen, where you need to choose the region of your Battle.Net account so that you are taken to the correct login page:
3. Connecting Patreon to Wipefest
Once you have logged in, you should be able to go to your
Wipefest account page
.
From here, click on the
Link your account to Patreon
button.
Patreon will show you the information that Wipefest is asking for.
Wipefest needs to know your Patreon user ID and pledge amount. Click

Hi guys,
First of all - Wipefest is very interesting service :)
But I can't test it and view any data. May be you forgot, but WoW has not only US realms.... :)
Here is my character -
Каазгул @ Galakrond EU
And when I try to open the link above, I see: "
Error "SyntaxError: Unexpected token I in JSON at position 0" occured while executing JSON.parse on the response body - Invalid character name/server/region specified..
Please, don't forget to decode params from URL :)

I would love it if this could work for mythic plus runs too!

having just started raiding seriously, (or semi-seriously), I found Wipefest, and when I clicked 'help' i got here. Great, but I'm not seeing "insights" ANYWHERE. My top set of options seems to be Mechanics, Players, Timeline, and Guides. Am I missing something, or is this guide out of date?
-Barleduq
If Insights are only available for SUBSCRIBERS then that should be MENTIONED in the first mention of INSIGHTS. Telling us about a service that does not require subscribing for basic functionality and NOT mentioning what functions require subscription is really misleading.
