So far I've had a very good drop rate (7 of 28) from the Dreadfang Widow's on this item. All of the ones on AH are 10g+, and considering how high the drop rate I find it hard to believe that people would pay that much for it.

Well, drop rate is not 80% but much more like 10% now.

Great way to farm!
kill the ones in northern terrokar, fly around on mount , there are about 3 in little packs, dismount kill all 3, very high drop rate, on gurubashi they sell for 10g+ a piece, because u can sell them to the poor saps trying to level their tailoring :( (me)

Very true. If you can manage to solo or due farm Black Morass, the drop rate is fantastic. In addition, the mobs usually give more than one leather (regular or scraps) per skin.

Im farming them right now. I have counted the number of spiders in Terokkar forest, and I have killed 50. I have gotten absolutely none.
Either my luck really really SUCKS or with the new patch only high-level spiders can drop it now.

as with many things in this game, it depends on your luck - or more realistically what the computer rolls for you, so please stop lamenting how WoWhead is wrong or you drop rates are bad. Just like rolling a dice, you only get an even chance of each number occuring after rolling thousands of times, and since no one has single-handedly killed this many widows, many would be experiencing what seems to be "unfair/uneven" rates, while others maybe getting a drop every kill. Other than that, the area outside Allerian Hold is a reasonable place, running from north to south; respawn rates are enough to keep up with at most 2-3 people at the same time, especially if there's no one trying to do For the Fallen

I would agree, BM is the best place to farm these. Lots of spiders, no other farmers. And if you're an engineer w/ your gadgetzan transporter it's not even a very long trip to get there :-) I port to gadget, farm some spiders for 30 minutes, hearth back to wherever I need to be.

Just did a 65 minute session in Terrokar. 124 kills, 10 silks. Either I got very unlucky or the drop rate is noticeably less. I remember getting 1 in every 4-6 here before but now it's not even 1 in 12.

The other day I went farming in TF, and I had a run of 56 kills without a drop. Poor luck, really. The rate seemed to be about 15%, but similar to the old Essence of Air in silithus, it feels like you'll get them in bunches, then go dry for a while.

Well... I just went to TF to get 2 (two) silks for my Frozen Shadoweave Mantle... On the first spider it dropped... for the second I had to, literally, kill all the spiders in Terrokkar twice(!). That means all the spiders all around Auchindoun... twice. So I was rather unlucky. :D

Just finsihed a run in BM to farm some silk, having read it was the 'best' spot.
I was getting somewhere in the range of 1:12 (silk/kills).. not a drastic improvement at all on my part over Terrokar. My other problem with the BM spiders is that they either drop a silk, or nothing at all (unless you get a green item, which again is rare). Which puts them at a disadvantage over the TF spiders.
Personally, on my server, I have had no problems with the TF spiders being over-farmed so I can go there and farm away on my own. Which for me would be the only visible advantage that BM spiders have. And of course the BM spiders are harder to kill as well.
So, in short; if your server has a lot of people farming the silk in Terrokar, use BM.. otherwise I wouldn't worry that you're missing out on big numbers by staying in TF.

I can confirm the best place to farm them, is Terokkar. Spiders have 5000-5500 hp instead of 7000 of those from BM so you can kill them very fast and raise the amount of silk gathered.
Moreover best to go south-east of Auchindum because there you can find only spiders and not be attacked by warps.
Be aware they spit venom so if you can't cure it, bring some potions in your bags

Good place also is a small area behind Sha'tari Base camp down in the south western corner of the bone wastes, near the edge of outland. There's a small group of maybe 10 spiders and a few infested root walkers on the outer edge. No adds to worry about and depending on how fast you kill them, a nice respawn. Definitely good to farm if you're doing the easy quests in that camp, plus you can sell any grays.

If you're farming the silk Southeast of Auchindown, I actually suggest going after Deathskitter in between killing the widow spiders. Deathskitter, upon each kill, dropped the Netherweb Spider Silk. Deathskitter's fairly easy to kill at level 70, and as a Warlock with about 13k health, I took her down without needing to use any health restorative items.

On my high pop server Terokkar is always on farm becuase of this i decided to try Bm. The drop rate is pretty good but you will have to fight off more then just spiders(you cant lose aggro in here) on the other hand ive seen mages clear half the instance in one pull.

do note that while farming in terrokkar you also have a chance of getting dreadfang venom sacs, which could also be a source of income as it is used in the reputation conversion from scryer to aldor.
so if you are just farming spider silk as a money source than i'd say terokkar is way better than BM :)

For those going to Black Moreas, the spiders and the rest of the trash mobs are not usual. They have around 9K hp and they hit at cloth for at least 500 dmg. So be carefull.

Forget the Black Morass. As a mage, orloxgr is right; they have almost 10k health and hit around 500 on cloth. I can go to the Netherweb spider cove in Terokkar and farm them way faster. Just think it takes me 20 seconds to kill one spider in BM or it takes me 5 seconds to kill one spider in Terokkar. Not to mention less pauses for food and water and no adds that I don't care about (Crocs and stealthed panthers).
The drop rate may be a little higher in BM but productivity in Terokkar trumps it. I farmed 4 silks in 15 mins before going back to work this afternoon.
Terokkar wins hands down.

I wouldn't recommend Black Morass, too many other mobs that get in the way. Terrokar Forest gives approx 5 silk every 10min, and you just have to kill spiders, it's quite a bit easier I feel. BM has too many crocs and stealth hyenas that get in the way, it's very annoying.

Since I had to farm these anyways to increase tailoring skill, I decided to keep count of how many kills and the assorted drops rates for the items. I only killed Dreadfang Widows and I fought along the edge of The Bone Wastes, making a circular pattern to make sure I hit all the areas the Dreadfang Widows spawn.
The results:
Kills: 150
Dreadfang Venom Sacks: 55 (36.67%)
Netherweb Spider Silk: 22 (14.67%)
Huge Venom Sack: 4 (2.6%)
Assorted Green Items: 3 (2.0%)
Did this in about 3 hours, with detours to hit mining nodes on occasion. Hope this helps you with your farming. Good Luck!

Killed about 20 or so spiders outside Allerian Stronghold netting 1 silk. Went to CoT and got a 100% drop rate till about 5. Then I killed 20 with a ZERO drop. Exited, reset instance, went back in and got a ZERO drop rate. I'd call this nerfed.

Did some grinding of the spiders just outside Allerian Stronghold in Terrokar, mainly to level up my cat that had been left stabled since BC release. Fast respawns and a 5 second ride to vendor off the huge grey drops that only stack in 5's.
20 in about 2 hours of casual killing, and that's 200G on AH..

On 5/20/2008, Blizzard banned an estimated 10,000 accounts because they were then able to track the widely used bot program called Glider. Essentially, there are no more bots in WoW farming for goods. As a result, prices are skyrocketing on AH because there is not near the supply there was before. This is really good for sellers, but really bad for buyers.

Farming from dreadfang widows in terokkor forest. Good drop rate. They're expensive right now on my server, 10g a piece, so it's best to farm em w/ this drop rate. 20% drop rate i'd say

It would seem from my experience that the best drop rate for this is infact from the Blackfang Tarantulas in the Black Morass. It also has the added benifit of the instance being all for you and being able to reset when you run out of mobs.
However there is the added annoyance of extra mobs and the fact that these spiders are harder but I think it is worth it.
I forgot to mention, it would probably be more productive if you took a skinner with you as he can benifit from the cats & crocs while you get all the silk. Also makes things faster.

1st of all, black morass spiders have 2x as much Hp than the spiders outside Alerian Stronghold. 2nd u have to complete Durnholde in order to even enter black morass, 3rd traveling to black moras every time u need silk, well good luck on that one, as to say i spend 95% of all play time in outland now anyway. 4th if u pull 2-3 mobs by acciden u can get owned fairly easy, 5ht i can just AOE farm 5-6 spiders in Terrokar withou much problems
now in conclusion: maybe the drop rate is higher YES, but if u like the idea of speding your full mana pool to kill 1 mob and to travel ALOT just for silk than sure its the place for u.
im not saying its a bad place its just in my expirience and many ppl here Terokkar is far better farming spot than BM

I wonder if Blizzard stealth nerfed the drop rate recently on these from the Terrokar spiders. I used to get about 1/5 from Dreadfang Lurkers and Widows, now I'm getting about 1/30. I asked someone else farming in the area and he confirmed that rate as well.
Guess I'll have to level up and hit the CoT if I want this stuff.

Im a lvl 70 priest with lvl 375 tailoring. I have being doing a lot of farming for Netherweb Spider Silk as well as the elemental primal motes. I can tell you without fear of contradiction that the drop rate is NOT constant. I think it is reset every so often and like much else in WOW there is an algorithm that returns a random number which determines a drop rate. I have tried mapping the drop rate agains the clock to see if there is a clock based drop-rate of primal motes. It was not successful. I think the game generates a random number every hour that defines (within limiting parameters) what the drop rate shall be. Sorry if this is not helpful but it is at least a suggestion of why there is great variance of perception of drop rate. On the positive side it is likely that ALL the posters above are therefore correct.

I can se alot of reasons not to travel all the way to Black Morass.
Blackfang Tarantula
lvl 70-71
9500 hp
350 avg dmg (on cloth)
25% drop (With MobInfo2 in ~260 kills)
Dreadfang Widow
lvl 64-65
6000 hp
200 avg
14% drop (With MobInfo2 in ~300 kills)
Now, first of all Black Morass is far away, in the time it takes to fly there you can kill 15-20 spiders in Terokkar and get a few silks already. The spiders in BM are not alone, you have to kill crocolisks, sneaky panthers etc just to clear the way to the spiders, waste of time. And the spiders both have alot of hp and do alot of damage.
In Terokkar, as a 70 mage I could gather 6-7 spiders and AoE them easily. Any other class kill them alot faster than ½ the time it takes to kill a spider in BM because level difference increases your crit chance on the 64-65 spiders if you are lvl 70.
And when you have killed those 25-30 spiders in Black Morass (and 20 other crocolisks and panthers) you have to go out, reset and go back in. This can only be done 5 times per day then you have to go to Terokkar for more anyway.
Even if the drop chance is higher in the Black Morass you still don't have an advantage other than that you can be alone for the farming. But go to Terokkar in the morning and I think you'll have the spiders to yourself most of the times.

I also think these were nerfed, at least for the ones in Terrokar. I can't claim much evidence since I only did about two farming runs before the Black Temple patch. But before, I did indeed used to get about 1 in 6, whereas now it's more like 1 in 12.
The greater evidence for a nerf here is that the AH price has risen sharply since then (on Kirin Tor), from about 5-7g to 12-15g apiece, and some going as high as 20g in peak hours. There has been an echo-effect, too, on Imbued Netherweave Bags and other items that require netherweb silks. If the economics have changed, my first instinct is that the supply has as well -- and this would fit with the halved drop rate I experienced.
We know for certain, however, that Motes of Fire were nerfed, and like Motes of Fire, the Netherweb Silks are necessary for many high-level tailoring goods. The patch also included several changes in materials for some high-level tailoring goods, e.g. it now takes 6 fewer Primal Mooncloths for a Primal Mooncloth Robe. I postulate, then, that the netherweb silks are part of a greater effort by Blizz to make it harder to get materials, but require fewer materials altogether to make BC tailoring goods.
Unfortunately, it seems the Netherweb Spider Silks will still be required in the same numbers as previously, and have become more difficult to farm. It might be worth it -- if you need to farm more than a few of these -- to grab a skinner and goof around in Black Morass. The drop rate there seems to be at least 35 percent, though I've experienced about 50 percent in all my runs.
Recent Farming Runs (including travel time from Shattrath Aldor Inn):
Terrokar: 25 minutes, no silks
Terrokar: 35 minutes, 4 silks
Black Morass (with friend): 58 minutes, 8 silks
Terrokar: 45 minutes, 3 silks

To whom it may concern, I farmed for like 20 minutes at Allerian Stronghold without a single drop. Then I moved just outside to 53. 57 and the drop rate improved immensely--about 50% (11 silk for killing 24 spiders).

As a level 64 Hunter I do quite well comparatively getting NW silk in Terrokar just about anywhere. Yes, there are times I get zip from 5-6 spiders but usually after a run like that I do much better:
45 min run: first 10 spiders= 2 silk
2nd 10 spiders= 4 silk
Keep in mind I dropped app. 12 wolves and 2 basilisks in that
same time frame as well as sat for mana etc.
that's 6 out of 20 and I do better at times and also worse other times.
I believe it all evens out. A rough estimate I have is after a 3 hour stint
between Tureem and Shatt I realized about 20% but that was a good day
and I have had worse. Every spider you kill is another, separate roll of
the dice and you have to take it that way one spider at a time not how
well or how poorly you've done on 10 spiders because the variance is
too great with such a small sampling. I feel there may be 2 seperate controls on drop rates; 1 is a regional count and another may be a character count.
I mean why not? The game knows whether or not you have a quest and
drops accordingly, how hard would it be for Bliz to actuate a character drop
vs. a straight "free for all" drop rate? Not very hard....

I farm these on my rogue for my warlock, and I find I can farm really well from the southern wall of Allerian Hold south all the way to the edge of the continent. Sometimes there's a couple more people there, but a lot of the time I'm alone, and there's lots of spiders and no wolves or anything to get in the way. I almost never have any trouble with waiting for mobs or anything. I spent around an hour or two there today and got 14 silk, along with about 20 stacks of spider guts. Really helpful when you're trying to level the last 15 points of Tailoring...

I read the comments here and spent some time in the little pocket south of Allerian Stronghold as well as a few other likely spots in Terokkar Forest. As a healy priest, I'm not the fastest at taking down mobs solo... after 38 spiders dead (felt like it took *forever*) and only one silk dropped, I decided to give BM a try.
I walked in BM and got 2 netherweb spider silks off the first two Blackfang Tarantulas I killed. About 10 more kills, got another. Adds were more annoying and the BM spiders are harder to kill than the Terokkar ones. But I think that's offset by the fact that there's no competition for the spiders in BM... they're all yours. And it's especially offset by the conspicuously higher drop rate.
If you are lower level and/or not that great geared... or if you are a dps class that can quickly take down many, many spiders at once (e.g. a mage)...then you might prefer the pocket of spiders south of Allerian Stronghold.
But if you are higher level and/or well-geared... or if like me, you are slower at taking down mobs and want a better drop rate per mob for the time you invest... then you might prefer farming these in BM.

Hi everyone,
As I wanted to level my tailoring to 375 I needed this silk. it goes for 9g/piece on our server (Aszune) so I prefered to farm it. Place of farming: the ridge under Veil Shalas in Terrokar (where you got all those cocooned warriors).
At first we - I did it with a guildie - killed about 30 Dreadfang Widows without a single drop. We thought "let's go to BM, perhaps the drop rate will be better" when we killed our last spider. And it dropped! Just like the next 20+ spiders. 100% drop rate! And then suddenly, they stopped dropping. Ten more spider: no drops.
So what I think: they drop following a timed pattern. It's just too improbable that no spiders drop, then all spiders drop, then again no spiders drop.
BTW: if you go farming there, don't kill the Tarantula boss if you don't have the Q. Killed it 3 times and never gave any loot. Waste of time and mana.
Regards,
Deadyellow

I am at Black Morass right now. I've been farming say... oh about 40 minutes to an hour... I've got just 4 silks. That might also because because the adds got me twice, what with the stealthed jaguars that pop at you out of nowhere. I thought the drop rate here would blow my mind away. Not so. Right now I don't find it so much better than Netheridge. Maybe it's a timing issues but THE DROP RATE IN BLACK MORASS IS ****NOT**** 30% TO 40% PERCENT. It's more like 10%.

I was farming this in the south east corner of the Bone Wastes and experienced a pretty good drop rate of about 15-20%. I wandered up to northern Terokkar, in the area outside of Shatt near the lake, and seemed to experience more of a 30-40% drop rate, though that may just be luck. This is VERY easy to farm and sells very well on my server (~10g per piece) so I prefer it to farming motes (~30g for Air and Water primals on my server.)

Oh, and it's ill advised to pull more than 2 Blackfang Tarantulas at once. Bad things will happen... >_>
