Good place to farm these in my experience are the
in Nagrand. They are easy fast kills and drop the motes at a decent rate.
Least valuable of all the varieties of motes. The primal goes for less than a gold on my server, where other primals go from 15-30 gold.
I made a quick outline of where all the best places to farm motes are. Very useful if, like me, you are farming many of them for a recipe of some sort.
(Zone) NPC name - Coordinates - % drop rate - link to page at Wohead
Mote of Air:
(Nagrand) Storming Wind-Ripper - 69.21 (Throne of Elements) - 33.9% -
Mote of Fire:
(Nagrand) Raging Fire-Soul - 69.21 (Throne of Elements) - 34.1 -
Mote of Water:
(Terokkar Forest) Crashing Wave-Spirit - 63.17 (North-Western Throne of Elements) - 33.7 -
Mote of Earth:
(Blade's Edge Mountains) Sundered Rumbler - (Basically above and all below Area 52) - 18.8 -
Mote of Mana:
(Netherstorm) Mana Wraith - 36.60 and 31.73 (Anywhere above Area 52 and more below. While you're at it, kill the Nether Rays as well, they have just as good of a chance to drop and are mostly in the same area) - 25.8 -
Mote of Life:
(Zangarmarsh) I didn't find any specific place to farm for these because the zone is just rich with them. But I would suggest farming the Bogg/ Starving Bogg Lords and Fungal /Starving Fungal Giants because they are all very close. - The Spawning Glen (SW Zangarmarsh) and East of there is the Quagg Ridge - Very similar drop rates on all 4 mobs that I pointed out, 18.2 to 18.8 -
Mote of Shadow:
By far the most commonly found mote. This is dropped in almost every zone and can be easily farmed anywhere. But there may be a few exceptional areas just because npcs that drop them are close together, non-elite, and easy to kill. Here's one spot in a few that are exceptional:
(Nagrand) Voidspawn - Again, no specific coords, but all around Oshu'Gun, the bigass crystal SW Nagrand. - 18.4 -
Keep in mind the motes are removed from most demons, and now only on the void elementals in patch 2.1, so they will no longer be common and prices will likely be rising significantly to match those of the other primals.
Theese are a hell to farm now. The drop rate is so low on the few mobs that drops them.
Wow... on the Draka server they went from 3g or less per Primal to 14g or more (Horde side). They are needed matts for Shadow Cloth and many other professions... This may make transmuting Primal Water to Primal Shadow viable since motes of water are still easy to come by.
Since Motes have a use function, you can drag them to your Action Bar to easily track how many you got while farming.
indeed these should have a higher value than what they do. farmed them for hours and only got 8 of them.
Motes of Shadow only drop off of void creatures now. This change was instated in one of the 2.1.x patches.
I have also killed the VW in hellfire. They aren't dropping them either. So....The other day I was killing VW in netherstorm, and they were giving me motes of shadow. I don't know what's going on.
Best place for farming motes of shadow is Nagrand around Oshu'gun. Drop rate is decent but you also get a lot of cloth which you could either use for tailoring if you have it or bandages...or just sell the cloth and buy more motes/primals! Win no matter what I say.
I think they may have changed the drop rate on these after patch 2.3. I killed about 20 voidspawns in Nagrand without a single mote dropping, whereas before the patch they had a pretty good drop rate, I was getting 2-3 Primals per hour before. I'm going somewhere else!
As of 2.3 Oshu'gun seems to be the way to go.
At first, you'll wonder if motes even drop at all from the voidwalkers. You can easily kill them and move onto the next mob, however, and after you've circled around a few times you'll know where to find them. Around one to two primals every cycle, just keep at it.
Well, 75% drop from Eyes and Hounds of Cuthulas isn't true....i killed 6 of them,no drop.
Best place to farm Motes of Shadow, you say? Voidwind Plateau. While it boasts a smaller population of Mote-dropping mobs than Nagrand, they have a much higher drop rate, and no one seems to realize how great this place is for farming them. Go between farming Primals and grining Consortium Rep seamlessly!
You can also gather Motes of shadow by using a
I just farmed 8 primals in about one hour yesterday
What profession/class is this used for?
I farmed for exactly 2 hours, 30 minutes, and came up with 8x
in Hellfire Peninsula's Void Ridge, with a few motes on the side.
It was nice to have all the mobs close together for Seed of Corruption,
and I was able to 3 shot the Vacillating Voidcaller with a SB+Searing+Searing combo.
Not sure if the droprates on the mobs in Voidwind Plateau have been nerfed or what, but I needed 2 Primal Shadows, so I decided to farm there for them.
In a little over an hour I killed 90 of the mobs there and received 21 Motes of Shadow. By my calculations, that's a droprate of slightly higher than 4%. A far cry from the 25% droprate listed on Wowhead.
Course I could have just been slapped with horrendous luck, but it's a caveat to anyone choosing to farm there. I had about the same droprate (10%) for the mobs in Nagrand where I farmed for 20 minutes, killed about 30 mobs and got 3 Motes. Closer to the listed droprate of 19%, but still frustrating.
Spent all day trying to find a comfortable spot for Primal Shadow, seeing as I need a ton of them. Tried getting good rates with the Voidspawns in Nagrand but they were just too spread out for it to really be effective (and not mind-numbingly boring and painful).
Found my best bet to be using my Hunter in Hellfire Peninsula at Void Ridge (you could use The Warp Fields but that's a bit of a quest zone so it could be crowded); just put my pet on Stay/Aggressive and parked him under one of the void disturbances. It'll attack them as they spawn and if it's 70, it'll tear them apart. You'll wnt to be careful going afk since if your pet kills them with no assistance from you (very quickly with a Cat or Ravager, etc), you won't get credit for the kill and you won't be able to loot the body. Only things you really need to be careful about is toss the occasional Mend Pet if it gets low and other than that enjoy looting.
Just as mentioned before, you'll have the odd single spawn somewhere, but they'll mostly spawn in small waves of 3-5 at a time and you just tear them apart and loot away.
"In a little over an hour I killed 90 of the mobs there and received 21 Motes of Shadow. By my calculations, that's a droprate of slightly higher than 4%. A far cry from the 25% droprate listed on Wowhead."
21 out of 90 is actually about 23% drop rate. The stat is based on the mote drop rate, not the primal rate.
These are best farmed in HFP at the Void Ridge, I was able to obtain 68 motes in exactly 1 hour (2 full MotW buffs). Whereas I only obtained ~40 in 90+ minutes in Nagrand.
Both types of Void mobs drop them at Void Ridge, kill'em all!
What are these used for?
can't alla update this? it's pretty annoying trying to figure out what I ought to be killing here.
I've been killing Hounds and Eyes of Culuthas for a good twenty minutes now, the only one at the camp, and have only managed to get two motes, both off the same mob.
So I wouldn't call that a 100% drop.
But I think you had a good day with it and I'm having a bad day so when you split the difference, you get about the 50% drop rate reported by Alla.
pretty easy just farmed as a 70 rogue 1 primal per 15 was good needed 5 more was crafting belt of deep shadow
dont think drop rates are still correct.
killed 12 eyes of culuthas and hounds no drop at all
The important thing to understand is they still drop from voidwalker-type creatures. Try farming the ones out by Mana Forge Ultris in Netherstorm. You can also go into the cave there and repeat-kill Arconus the Insatiable. He respawns once every minute or so. However, the drop rate from him isn't 25%. It's more like 8%, but I think he's easier to kill than any of the other voidwalkers.

The absolute best place to farm these is at the crystal in nagrand, south of the consortium post. Not only is the drop rate pretty good, you also get oodles of netherweave cloth and crystal powder to turn it at halaa for tokens. I also come away with a few greens on each run.
Farmed around Oshu'gun in Nagrad for about 50mins and picked up 31 motes.
Droprate seems correct. Farmed for about an hour in Nagrand and got 31 motes.
Various recipes for tailoring and maybe some other professions.
According to 2.1.0 patch notes, Mote of Shadow no longer drops of any demons so expect prices to rise. They still drop from void creatures.
try out hellfire peninsula 77,67, alot of low lvl void creatures
This whole page is worthless, erase all your drop rates and start over cause bliz did.
I killed over 20 Hounds and Eyes of Culuthas and the only thing i got was a grey staff for a drop. If you ask me the drop rate sucks on everything on these guys.
In 10 kills ( for the questin honor hold ) I picked up 9
Mote of Shadow
Interestingly.. I killed another 15 or so after the quest log had the 10/10.. and didn't get another one.
Blizzard nerfed the hell outta this drop rate! It like doesn't drop for crap anymore off anyone!
Nagrand is the best as of now. Tons of mobs with little agro and the drops are 20-30%. Sometimes they drop 2. Around 36,71
as of today, sept 11, 2007, Eye of Culuthas and Hound of Culuthas in Netherstorm, actually don't drop anything at all!
THe Oshug'gun Crystal to the west in Nagrand has Voidspawn's patrolling all around it these things drop 1-2 motes of mana each, sometime i can get 4 or 5 in a row to drop them and sometimes It takes 6 with nothing to get one, but an hour of farminf these got me 85 motes, so really it's not a bad place, and they DO drop.
Don't know if anyone cares but they drop VERY VERY nicely off of both, Eye of Culuthas and Hound of Culuthas in Netherstorm (53,22)ish. Like 100% drop rate average.
Ok, its pretty annoying tbh that i look for moes of shadow, and am told by allakhazam that the culutas hounds and eyes drop them. They turn out to drop nottin at all. UPDATE pls
They don't drop at all anymore. First I tried hellfire, I remember killing those voids when bc first came out and getting 2 primals out of 15 of them. I gave up after killing 30 of them and getting ONE mote.
So I goes to nagrand, try to kill the ones south of the consortium post, the drop rate sucks, about 1 in every 8 or 9 kills. I was getting more greens than motes dropping.
Go do a 5 min daily and buy one from AH.
Anyone know where a good place to farm for these is? I can't find anything that's even close to the other mote drop rate with the elementals.
got 1 mote of shadow in 35 minutes of non stop slaying of voidwalkers in void ridge, yes, i said ONE MOTE OF SHADOW IN 35 MINUTES wtf is up with these drop rates? i need 6 for my Fel Leather Gloves
and can't seem to get.... im omw right now to nagrand to see if higher level voidwalkers have a better drop rate than lvl 60-62 voids in hellfire...
horrible drop rate on all of these, i havent been able to get anything to drop them consistantly
Just so people will stop pulling their hear out :)
In Patch 2.1.0 the following changes occurred regarding Motes of Shadow:
Enraged Fel Sparks now properly drop Motes of Fire instead of Motes of Shadow.
Motes of Shadow now primarily drop from void creatures and have been
This basically means two things,
Yes, some creatures now do
drop Motes anymore, e.i: Culutas Hounds and Eyes !
This does not mean they have to be removed from the list as their percentage will simply become so low they won't show up in the top 3/10 whatever no more.
The drop rate itself has not been touched by Blizz (officially not anyway !).
What you experience is the the fluctuation which generates the total percentage of a drop rate.
Remember the percentages on this or in-fact any website is coming from ALL Servers from ONLY the people which upload data to here and not ALL players that exist and play WoW !
Thus its impossible to get a 100% reliable percentage on the drop rates to begin with.
For most drop rates which have 100Thousand of statistical uploads the number is most likely to be 99% correct but don't get frustrated if you are experiencing a fluctuation, specially after 30 minutes of farming :)
Farm at least for 6 or more hours on the one spot before passing a comment on the drop rates !
I farmed Nagrand for the best part of 10 hours or so in total not in one go, which sounds like a long time but actually it only means I killed aprx 400 elementals there.
400 is not a big number of kills to generate a reliable percentage from is it now !
Lock box and a pat. out of about 12 of them
1. If you combine 10 of them they become a Primal Shadow.
2. Primal Shadow are used in many higher level crafting recipes, including Tailoring, Enchanting, etc...
3. They can be transmuted to Primal Water which is also used in m any higher level crafting recipes.
Terrorfiend's do not drop these. Thott lies! I just killed 30+ and not a one... 45% droprate my arse
in nagrand you were only getting 16%? ive killed about 200 or so and have gotten about 32% from the 65's and 35% from the 66's just around oshu'gun you can walk in circles farming the place, and the respawn time is great. ive been getting a primal every 15-20 minutes, it takes 10 seconds to kill a mob and then maybe 10 seconds to get to the next, i sit down to eat/bandage every 5-8 mobs depending on how lucky i am about taking dmg. if there is a mob semi far away i usualy mount up and just bolt right to them...im even a rogue and dont care about my opener. the droprate on netherweave cloth is about 75% or so, i got 10 stacks of cloth and about 6 primals in about 2 hours.
I have found that the mobs in Void Ridge (just south of the Dark Portal in Hellfire Peninsula) have a fairly common drop rate for the motes of shadow. Farming there for a few hours should net you at least a few primal shadows. Also a good place for mining fel iron, as there are 3-4 nodes along that stretch at any given time. If you farm them more to the south, you could go hours and hours without ever seeing another player, because the area exists due to a quest to get a drop from the voids, and most players get the ones they need in the north.
The collapsing voidwalkers are the main mob to farm there, because they deal little damage and have effectively 5% less hp because they self-destruct. Make sure you back away when they start channeling, because killing them still triggers the detonation.
The vacillating voidcallers have very little hp, but have very powerful offense and mimic the first type of energy used against them (holy, fire, shadow, etc.) as well as develop a 75% resistance to it. They are rarer than the collapsing, and easy to avoid.
Overall, farming there is a breeze, and you should have enough primal shadow for, say, an entire frozen shadoweave set, in less than 9 hours.
just southwest of
is the best place to farm
Motes of Shadows
Who cares about percent drop? What i care about when farming is how
i kill per
. One guy was talkin about 10sec kills(on a lvl 65) go to HF and down lvl 61-2's in 2-4 secs.
i did this, and even as fast as i could kill them, there were always plenty more spawning to farm asap with minimal competition, i was able to farm 15 primals in a few hours.
Found a VERY good drop rate on Voidshriekers and Unstable Voidwalkers around Manaforge Ultris in Netherstorm. They are high levels, like 68 and 69 IIRC, but they dropped 2 motes on almost every kill.
Drop off any
creature, Hellfire and Nagrand have the largest clusters of them for farming afaik.
The ones in Nagrand drop cloth and coin as well so they're very good for farming.
The ones in Netherstorm dont drop any cloth or coin so farming there is a waste imo.
I've been farming this in Nagrand at off the voidwalkers at (41,71) and in the last hour, i've gotten about 40 mote's, or 4 primals. about a 27% drop rate, which is better than any other place i've tried. and if a mote dosent drop, you'll at least get cloth, green vendor trash, and money.
I guess people missed the message......
THEY DON'T DROP OFF DEMONS ANYMORE!1!
70 Shadow Priest Grinding Voidspawns in Nagrand for 30 minutes:

3. Shadow Word: Pain
4. Vampiric Embrace
5. Stop Backpeddle
6. Mind Flay
7. Mind Blast

If NOT MB Crit Then:
Between VT, VE and Shadowfiend, I never had to drink or eat the entire time. Just ran around on my Land Epic Mount and hit the next guy. Pop Shadow Protection for more fun.
Total loot in 30 minutes
10g 7s Raw Cash
22 Motes of Shadow
2 Motes of Air (Aggroed a Wind Elemental by accident)
13 Oshu'Gun Powder Samples
How can you not grind this?
NB: I got about a 25% drop rate on the Motes of Shadow (25/102) but this is deceiving because 95% of the time the drop is 2x Mote of Shadow. So the DROP rate is closer to 12.5%, but that drop is 2 Motes.
The drop-rates in Nagrand seem to have been normalized in the most recent patch. Either that, or I'm terribly unlucky.
I agree that the area near Oshugun used to be one of the best places to farm these, but since the 2.20 patch, they barely seem to drop at all. I only managed to get 2 primal shadows (i.e. 20 motes) in 90 minutes while grinding on my mage (fire). The kills were quick, since I 2- or 3-shot most of them.
One thing they do drop a ridiculous amount of is netherweave. MobInfo put the drop-rate for it at about 150%, since most of them drop up to 3 at a time.
I'm wondering if Bliz put a time-of-day droprate variance on these, as they do with many fishing drops. I seem to get a much higher droprate at night, whereas in afternoons I am likely to kill 50 or so voidwalkers for 3 motes.
Yes, they can do that. No, it wouldn't surprise me. Maybe because it's "shadow" it likes the night?
Anyone else notice a pattern like that?
Interesting theory regarding the time of day when hunting voidwalkers for Motes of Shadow.
I noticed that the drop rate was around 28% last night in Nagrand, but this morning I couldn't get ANY after about 30 kills in the same place at around 8:00 AM server time.
I headed over to Hellfire Peninsula and I've gotten around 20 motes in about 20 minutes there. There might be some truth to the time of day idea.
I farm motes of shadow in Nagrand at Oshu'Gun. all i do is follow the white circle that is closest to Oshu'Gun (the big white rock), and come out from the the "white rock" at 40.76 40.66 and 31.68 to kill some more Voidspawns. their lvl's range from 64 to 66. i find that most times i can get 1 Primal Shadow in about 20-30mins. NOTE: i am a feral druid lvl 70 with mostly blue's, druids are by FAR not the best class to farm with, somthing like a Mage or Warlock would kill far more Voidspawns then me thus lowering the time it takes to get 10 for a Primal Shadow. Pimal Shadow's sell on my sever (Jubei'Thos) for about 25g
Hope this helps someone.
I've found that the voidspawn in the field of spirits in Nagrand are the best for farming these motes. Unlike most other elementals, the Voidspawn not only drop motes and the vendor fodder, but they frequently drop Netherweave cloth, which is more for your kills.
This area is also more favourable for warlocks, as a lot of people just run around the inner ring of path killing the voidspawn they see there or nearby there - a lock with sense demons up can quickly tell even on the inner path if there are any voidspawn on the paths that branch off from it. As the spawn are generally spread out, Dotting and fearing a spawn while having another wand-tapped and banished as well as sending you pet against one with dotted support while you can take on another means for quick and easy area clearouts. The spawn time is relatively short as well, roughly 5-8 mins. But most people run around the circle, so by the time you've lapped it theyre often already back.
I also recoment not visiting Void Ridge for shadow motes as a lvl 70 unless youre also a miner, as (this may just be unlucky) that I got far less motes on the ridge as a 70 than I did back when I was actually doing the quests up there.
wow...i killee like 20 colapsing voids in the void ridge and only got like 2,...this sux
So, I did a little experiment since I had to farm Primal Shadow for some gloves for my Druid anyhow. First, I went to Nagrand and farmed Voidspawns (Level 65-66ish) I gave myself and hour, then counted what I had. In that hour of circling the Spirit Fields, I made out with 28 Motes of Shadow.
Then, I went to the Warp Fields in Hellfire Peninsula and gave myself one hour there. I made out with seven in that entire hour. Yeah, you can kill a lot more, and a lot quicker (I was using my 70 Hunter). But the droprate, at least for me, was a lot lower.
Cosmos showed the droprate (factoring in all my characters), as 33 percent in Nagrand, and 11 percent in Hellfire. I don't know if I was just unlucky at farming that day, or what, but there it is. On the upside, the Blade of Misfortune dropped off a Rogue Voidwalker for me while farming.
Should sell well, so it wasn't a total bust.
I was farming the motes yesterday around Oshu'Gun in Nagrand. I got about 150 mots in 4 hours of grinding. The Voidspawns also drop ca. 12s each on the evarage as well as netherweave cloth, Oshu'Gun crystal powder and ocassinally green quality items. I ended up with about 50g, 20 stacks of netherweave, 10 green items and 40 powder. I was there alone for the first couple hours. Then a couple more people came there. It hasn't really changed the eficiency as the respawn rate is pretty high and there's a plenty of elementals.
My char is a level 69 (turned 70 while farming) fury warrior with some nice blue gear, but nothing outstanding. I was able to kill about 15 Voidspawns before having to eat. Each Voidspawn took about 15 seconds to kill.
Yeah, I just farmed there for a good while and got 3 motes. Minimal competetion and killed upward of 100 VW's. Either HUGE nerf, or unacceptably unlucky.
I agree with older comments, even in Classic TBC the Void Ridge and Warp Fields of Hellfire Peninsula have the best drop rate for these. If you happen to have an engineer with your Zapthrottle Mote Extractor then Shadowmoon Valley is, by far, the quickest way to farm shadow motes. I farmed every voidwalker in the two areas of Hellfire Peninsula and came away with 11 motes (took about 40 minutes) but one loop of SMV with my mote extractor yielded 29 in less than half the time.
