Tested it out. The runes absorb the FIRST XXXX damage you take. So in the case of my above example, it will absorb the 1900 damage.
It takes a couple seconds to apply, so you can't use it midfight. On the other hand, it is a nice little damage buffer to start a boss fight with, letting the tank take a bit more damage and get some more aggro before the healer needs to start healing.
I think this would be good to put on a Paladin or Shaman healer. Could prevent them from dieing, wasting mana to heal themselves etc. Its also good to take a bit of damage at the start of a fight.
Runes do not go away when you log out or zone.
Also when still absorbing damage, your spells are not effected by spell knockback from damage.
I can say as an Elemental Shaman, these things are I.W.I.N. in PvP... Well worth the 5g or so if you want to 100% beat someone.
Can you put this on two or three different shields, and swap them during combat?
Absolutely Excellent tool to have if you tank. Put one on yourself for boss fights and give a few to a pally or shaman in your group too. They could wear it for most of an instance, in the case of stray aggro, before it fails. A must if your group has an Elemental Shaman.
Can anyone verify the average amount of absorbsion?
Can anyone confirm whether or not these absorb magical damage, as well as physical damage?
Do you have to keep a shield equipped to maintain the buff, or just to cast the rune? If you can safely de-equip the shield once the buff is applied, these could be handy for any DPS that can equip a shield.
This item is being changed in 2.2.
It will be applied to a chest/robe item and it will periodically absorb damage to a maximum of 4000.
And the level requirement is now 60 instead of 55.
It's Actually called Greater Rune of Shielding, not Greater Ward of Shielding
No one seemed to mention this, and I want to be certain - does this have a duration, or does it only go away once you've taken 4,000 damage?
Does this have a cast time? If not it could be used in an emergency situation when tanking a boss or something.
These are extremely useful for Shaman and Paladin healers on fights with a lot of raid damage being thrown around (e.g. Lady Vashj). They can help to shave off some incoming damage and spell pushback.
This is probably the most useful during the Reliquary of Souls phase 1 encounter. Using this ward, power word: shields, Blessing of Sanctuary etc a tank can easily solotank through one whole cycle of fixates before an enrage.
This is probably less useful for a tank, since you will take 4k damage pretty fast, and the damage absorbed doesnt seem to generate rage.
With thise babies on I can easily slack on Prince. If you get Enfeeble and you're just too busy healing the tank, this will absorb the Shadow Nova. Or if an infernal lands on your head.
Can I ask a silly question ? :P Is this item useable in Arena in Retail ?
Have the pattern on EU Anachronos (H), for sale for the right price :) Whisper Edgewalker
ChiaCow @ Dalaran can Craft (Horde Side).
I can Craft it on EU Bloodscalp realm.
Only write to Slimer.
you can view who can craft this on your realm or add yourself as a crafter.
What kind of damage does this absorb? Melee or everything?
Got the pattern, skill not there yet but should be soon.
Whisper Alexice on Alonsus to check for availability.

Goes away after 4k dmg
This and the chest piece one are great for PvP. No blacksmithing skill required. =P
does it overwrite shield enchants?
No, this is similar to the oils, poisons applied to weapons
How long to apply? Like is it realistic to apply in combat?
Where i can find a recipe for such fing?
Plans are BoP. Got mine from a Sunfury Mage in Netherstorm while doing my dailies. Here is a link to the plans
. Hope it helps.
