Drops from the chess event in Karazhan.
Indeed, this sword is a poor choice for a combat rogue. If a rogue is looking to dual-wield swords, the best choice is to take up Swordsmithing and start working up the Master Swordsmith swords, starting with Fireguard (
), which has the same DPS as King's Defender but better rogue stats. The subsequent Master Swordsmith swords are out of this world.
If you don't mind giving up Sword Specialization, you could get Blade of the Unrequited (
) or Dirge (
). Both daggers have much better stats for rogues than King's Defender.
Leave King's Defender for the tanks. It's clearly their sword.
Let's do our best to refrain from "this is clearly a <x> weapon" comments on this site. They're cancerous enough elsewhere.
I got one this past lock, and it's great tanking sword (and I'm actually a fan of the graphic).
As an aside, other people who have gotten it how did you do on the chess event? Last lock was the first time we stopped goofing around and only lost 2 pawns before winning, and the loot seemed much better. I've always wondered if your performance was somehow linked to drops (ala tribute runs).
- Latro's Shifting Sword...
Is still a better offhand than this, despite its smaller dps, for a combat sword rogue. The increase in energy regen from a 1.6 weapon to a 1.4 weapon with 5/5 combat potency is unreal. Around 60-80 extra energy per minute, not to mention offhand poison procs
Even getting a gladiator's shiv is a smarter move for a combat sword rogue than a kings defender. The offhand may lose its sword spec procs but its so much better for energy regen that the loss is not even slightly note worthy.
Seriously rogues. Dont take this sword unless the tank 100% passes on it. Its not doing you any good...(despite how good it looks). Just hold out for the spiteblade from netherspite if you want to see this gorgeous weapon model in your hands - Its the best and most obvious rogue sword (although MH) this side of serpentshrine cavern.
Just got this sword yesterday. Any suggestions for enchants on this?
Oh, yeah.. I'm a protection warrior.
This sword has been buffed:
87.5dps, 182armor, 28stamina, 13 def rating and 17hit rating.
I used to wonder if Sun Eater was better, now not so much.
LoL...Saw it on a warlock that had solo'ed chess event. She had some mail epic legs too :P
Between this and the Sun Eater, they're about equivelant. This offers a bit more Armor and a bit more +HIt (If you don't hit the target, you don't won't hold Aggro very well), or +Dodge (Every Warrior should really rely on Dodge...)
Sorry for being lazy and asking here instead of forums, but how do you guys compare threat generation (leaving aside avoidance/mitigation questions)?
Running a mod lilke KTM or something and then fighting a mob using some special procedure? At least from common sense that's what I'd do (if I was at home and not sitting on this old lap). I'm quite curious coz I read some opinions and .. try to double-check for myself if I would have gotten to the same result or at least fully understand how this works.
Moongnoose or Battlemaster?
and what enchant to put on TSE?
Excellent tanking weapon and extremely easy to obtain. We have had it drop for the last three weeks, and we usually will bring in subs/alts for chess since most of the rewards are meh. But king's defenders is an amazing tanking weapon, I've noticed huge amounts of threat increase in our otherwise undergeared tanks.
If you can't realise this is a tanking sword and would give it to a rogue you will not go far in raids
i cant belive people even said it should go to a rogue. . yes, tanking sword thorugh and through, but after that, either de, or give it to someone so they can look completely imba
This sword drops from Chess event in Karazhan, and its the best tanking sword and it defenetivly worth a Moongoose enchant.
I just Crafted Blazeguard (
I was wondering if King's Defender is an upgrade for tanking?
so is this sword better than thunderfury for tanking?
Its too slow for combat potency
I have to take umbrage with this statement. Forgive me.
I understand the basic rationale for objecting to a Rogue taking this weapon, though I'm of a pretty laid-back mindset in terms of loot distribution. I don't question that.
But.. seriously, exactly how many one-hand, melee-based swords do you think are out there that are faster than this? I count 17 total - that are available to players - and that's not excluding weapons that are way beyond or below Karazhan level. Furthermore, most of those are 1.5 speed.
I'm not quite certain if "too slow" was meant to be ironic, but even if it was, that statement is terribly misleading - most particularly to any Rogue of the appropriate caliber looking for a Combat Swords off-hand.
i got this on my paladin the other day for some tanking gear and through on a +40 spell damage. Now i know most of you will say its not a tanking weapon, but it doesn't matter cause it works. I tank well with it and besides during the time i got it nobody wanted it so the RL asked if i wanted and i said sure.
Paladins i recommend it, but maybe look at other options before you spend time in kara hoping it to drop
I would just like to point out that most posts are basing tanking on DPS, where that stat is almost irrelevant. Devastate is you main aggro holding ability and has a 1 second cooldown. It deals 1/2 weapon dmg +35(rank 3). So whether you are swinging a 2.60 mace, or a 1.60 sword you will still get 1/2 the weapon damage +35 every second.
I'll pit the Drakefist Hammer (Master Hammersmith step1 epic 1H mace) VS. the King's Defender. note:DPS on the Drakefist is lower than King's.
devastate value (before modifiers): 114.5-183 dps (1/2 dmg +35)
devastatre value (before modifiers): 84-126 dps (1/2 dmg +35)
Only a very small portion of tanking is about damage or DPS, such a small part that the values aren't given considerable thought when tanks are choosing their weapons.
If for no other reason, a rogue should stay away from this because its BUTT UGLY.
one thing i do not see at all mentioned in these comments is the massive edge this weapon has over the sun eater in effective health.
182 armor on a weapon is an amazing stat and its got 5 more stam
and well dodge is nice when it works but effective health applies to every attack, and more consistent damage taken means a more predictable fight for healers
get this for the same reason you use the gladiator shield over the badges one
Any thoughts on getting the executioner enchant for threat generation? I have the Sun Eater with mongoose for avoidance already.
For a rogue, if the tank doesn't have it, the rogue who would want to own one is a blood idiot. Everybody should look down on him.
Drops from Chest in KARAZHAN, a moderate update from the Sun Eater, If you have your choice i would go with this sword over Sun Eater.
I want this for my mage lol i have the preditions blade from MC its called stupid loot, looks good no use... lol
the best item in teh game-- just looks the coolest!
I received this weapon as a tankadin today. I got both the Sun eater and the pvp weapon (S1) + 40 spelldmg enchant on it.. Im now doubting what to use.. what do you guys recommendt on spelldmg? +200/300 total?
And what to use? what situations?
This doesn't seem too tough
Kings Defender vs. Sun Eater:
King's Defender (
): 87.5dps 1.6 Sword 28STA +1.1%hit Tank Points:3352. Better aggro weapon. It has some mitigation, hit rating, and higher DPS. Straight white damage is important in threat generation, and this weapon provides more of it.
The Sun Eater (
): 83.4dps 1.6 Sword 22STA Tank Points:3995. Better mitigation weapon. Has dodge rating. Also has a cool flavor text.
I don't know about the new Frost enchant and Battlemaster seems sub par, but there are two nice tanking enchants:
Elitist Jerk's: The Protection Warrior
): Provides ~65 TPS.
): Provides mitigation and ~12.5 TPS.
I have both weapons and use them both. I have King's Defender with Executioner, and The Sun Eater with Mongoose. They compliment each other very well and I am very happy with that setup. I also like having the option of having a weapon without Mongoose for certain encounters (e.g. Zul'Jin). Mongoose provides ~4% dodge (idk exact number), and that leads to more overpowers and spike damage on the tank during bear phase.
Go here for gear rankings:
Berg's Tank Gear Rankings
The Sun Eater is the better mitigation weapon, and King's Defender is better for aggro, therefore I feel that the enchants I put on each compliment their roles very well.
i see that our guild pally tank is using this sword as a tanking wep with 40 spell damage on it. although it's not a bad idea, am i wrong saying that there are better weapons (blue perhaps) than this for paladin tanks?
Being a rogue myself, this weapon has terrible DPS. Also, the bonuses are for tanking. Rogues dont require defense nor armor. Although the hit rating is a nice bonus.
stats are boosted if you are a king
I'm a tank and I have King's Defender and I put
Mongoose on it. I plan on keeping it cuz tht enchant
cost me too much. Unless someone can show me a
clearly better tanking weapon I think after putting tht
enchant on it Im not switching it
One of the most frequently discussed tanking topics across all forums. For quick reference:
(The Sun Eater)
The Great Defender
The advantages of King’s Defender over The Sun Eater are:
+17 Hit Rating
The Engulfing Edge
The advantages of The Sun Eater over The King’s Defender are:
+19 Dodge Rating
The Clear Winner
but i recomand to get both and put a weapon chain on the sun-eater for disarming mobs.
finnaly got mine .. /cheer
Digz , Nepthilia , Hellscream ftw...
defo looks nice aswell with moongose enchant it just dangles on the floor with my tauren =) next on the list t4 shoulders gief plxkktybi

BEST EVENT EVAR1! This is a reward from probably the EASIEST and FUNNEST area in Karazhan, the CHEST EVENT! I like choosing the horsey :D. Anyway, I was thinking of DW this in my main hand with the Gladiators Quickblade in my OH. Seeing as how I'm still waiting on spiteblade again, I feel thisll hold be til spiteblade or the decapitator as a fury warrior. So, gimme some suggestions if you guys think this'd make a good MH, and if so, what enchant is good for it?
Just got mine as a Tankadin too. I told my guild that I am not sure if it will do any good but they insisted me to get it. I will slap a 40sp on this and will try next raid. However, i am here to see if there is any ohter opinion out there regardign to this word and Tankadin. I would love to hear any advice or suggestion.
Thanks in advance.
Great tanking sword, good speed and stats. Hard to find a better one as it even edges out the one that drops of lurker in SSC.
wow this is a godly tank sword anyone have a picture?
Got this on my mage last night lawl.
Got mine on my first Kara run, but as a Tankadin I'm not sure it should replace my
my lock has this ans also the sun eater, both enchanted with mongoose. i am not kidding, my lock has 500 AP 1100 spell damage, not at the same time though... i just run around with this in shatrath city pissing lvl 70 under warriors off, some times even lvl 70s

Drops from the chest after chess event (Karazhan)
Dropped for "For the Horde" today.
If you want to make custom wow cheats or mods id recommend visiting
drops all the time for my guild hopefully it drops tonight so i can snag mine
Found this link on another post about another blade. Then I discovered that it drops in Kharazan. To complicate it was stated that it also drops in a 10-man.
Anyone know for sure where it drops and what configuration, the instance is (are). drop rate etc..
Thanks for any help, this blade is quite sought after.
very nice sword for tanks, gotta get this baby for my Warrior :)
Rogue Here. Also just so we are clear, I know this goes to tanks first I got mine after all of the warriors etc. got it.
My question is. After the patch will this sword be greater than Latro's for an offhand?
I just got mine 2 nights ago and threw mongoose on it the same night! o.0 thing looks sexyyy!
Have it on my rogue now D: since the 2 other people in the raid already had it.
This item comes from the chess event in Karazhan, the 10-man instance. It is very simple to do as long as you communicate and plan ahead. <Eminent> of Spirestone Horde downed the Chess event (1/29/07) in live.
It is entirely possible to solo the chess event
after The Curator is down. You need to be class able to stealth it. I did this after my guild had downed Curator and the instance was about to reset. Granted, it is a tank weapon, although 81.2 DPS and a fast speed makes this great for me, especially because I was the only one there to get it.
Tank weapon for sure. Not saying its not good for anyone else. but mainly geared towards warriors (tanks)
The chess event is no longer possible to stealth to, the mobs on the way all have stealth detection :) Good thing I got it while the gettin' was good.
Its pretty much bloodlords defender TBC stylee
Combat rogue here, I got the 7th one in my guild, and only 'cos it was gonna be sharded.
Speed is viable, damage range is viable, dps is unbeatable off-hand unless you're a blacksmith. Hit rating is viable too. Uh, we don't have too much armor, so another 140 won't hurt. 25 STA? Well, my last 2 weapons (Reflex/Stormreaver fists) had 26 STA total, so by swapping them out I only lost 1 STA.
11 DEF? I'll find a use for it:p
Ain't no big thing, in all seriousness. If you are in a guild that's doing Kara, you'll know this is going to tanks first. If you are pugging Kara far enough to get a look at this, same deal.
Although you get rage generation and save 3 points in spec with TF, the DPS is just too low, and you end up losing aggro. Kings defender is fast, has very good tanking stats, and has much more dps, allowing you to produce that much more aggro then from TF proc.
King's Defender IS better then Thunderfury. No questions asked.
Just because he is the tank in the #1 guild does not make him the best tank. Someones been in their basement too long.
TF is nice, if you got one and you think it's better, use it and stfu. If you don't have one and you think KD is better, use it and stfu.
Most folks can't get a TF and the rest of us don't give a crap if you already have one. So take your e-peen and sit on it.
As for breaking shackles on Moroes. If you are stupid enough to not move, then you need to reroll to Mario cart because you sure as hell don't need to be tanking anything.
How the hell can he crit 1,5K with The Sun eater?
I do like 1,4K with The Decapitator with HS, and i got about 2,4-2,5K ap Self buffed...
You should know to put your tank BEFORE anyone else on this bad boy otherwise if all of your tanks have it or one isn't around or whatever then sure pass it onto a rogue or who ever can make good use of it...NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT!
you guys do know what is going on here right? stupid ass rogues/#$%^&*!s come on here and say OMFG I STOLE THIS WEP FROM A TANK ROFL! and laugh at us having a hissyfit and shooting a wall of text at them saying why they shouldent have it. they know they shouldent have it, and they dont, they just like seeing you people waste your time typing a 10 page report on why a tank should get priority on this. we all know they should, so stop #$%^ing arguing....
now for a real question... Sun Eater(
) vs King's Defender?
ok KD has 182 Armor and 6 more stamina, thats 60hp, thats pretty much negligible the way is see it, but yea it helps. they both have the same amount of defense, so we can basically cut that out of the picture. now KD has 17 hit rating, which is very nice for getting those sunders up quicker, but SE has 19 Dodge rating, which is MUCH more valuable as a tank imo. tell me what you guys think, and don't be a flamming idiot plz, everyone has their own opinion.
-Papatank 70 Prot Warrior Black Dragonflight Horde
-Thabait 70 Hunter Shattered Hand Alliance
the basic reality is,
which one can you get first? either one if a fine choice.
i was planning on getting my sun eater, but it dropped my 1st kara run last night.
I think the main reason people are concerned about which is better is because the enchants are expensive. I have Sun Eater now, so I think I will enchant it with Mongoose.
Sun Eater and King's defender are both great Tanking weapons. I would in this case state, that the King's defender can be a better weapon for Warrior Tangs because of the hit rating, which is very useful for warriors to build aggro(sunder armor etc.).
In general, I would consider the Sun Eater a better weapon for endgame Paladin Tanks who stacked their spell damage through other gear (D3/T4/5/6) and can therefore afford not to wear a caster weapon.
Pallys have to stack more dodge/parry/block than a warrior, as their version of shield block only adds 35%, but once a Pally hits uncrush, it is more reliable then the warrior, who may still get one or the other crushing blows if he is hit more than 2 times in 5 seconds (e.g. Prince in Karazhan). The Pally's uncrushability is only brocken if single enemy hits more than 8 times within 10 seconds. There is no such encounter in the game.
Playing a Pally Tank and having played a Warrior Tank pre-bc, the Sun Eater is their (pally's) weapon of choice above the King's Defender.
A warrior who has got enough dodge/parry/block stacked to hit "uncrush" should go for the King's Defender because of the Stamina & Armor.
The name comes from a chess move incidentally (This drops from the chess event.. duh, read above). The move is called the King's Indian Defense, and the purpose is to .. defend the King.
honestly id rather have the SE but whatever one i get first thats wat ima use so i dont waste time goin for one when i have the other and there is not that big of difference between the 2
this sword is awesome im so going to get this!...but honestly it isnt any diffrent from the se
I already had the Sun Eater when I got this, and the way i see it, Kings Defender has +hit rating, which can help get sunders on faster and do more threat, but The Sun Eater has dodge which helps you live longer. I would suggest using Kings Defender on trash, and starting out using Kings Defender on bosses, then switch to the Sun Eater when threat isnt an issue so that you can aviod more damage and help your healers. Both weapons are good, but they have different uses.
what if i put executioner on kings defender would that be good?
Best for Main Tanks leading raids. Proc gives damage mitigation from armor and dodge increase, plus threat boost from a crit or two.
Best for gold buyers. Proc increases your threat generated. No damage mitigation. Showy looks.
Best for Off Tanks in raids. Proc heals everyone in your party. Great in a 25 man setting for Off-Tanks.
Passive effect. Damage mitigation/avoidance from constant armor/dodge boost. Threat boost from extra crit chance. Notably affordable.
king's defender...not my choice in tank weapon even though i know its better, i still want the Sun Eater more...my first time tanking a raid, my first time tanking kara for my brand new, 3 week old guild: i got King's Defender last night. considering how undergeared i was, my guild was ecstatic to get their MT an upgrade like this. i also got the t4 gloves, same night; very slowly gettin the gear to do prince...
now, just to find someone to do mongoose for me! :D
I just won this but unfortunately I have no Gold for another mongoose as I just bought one for my Sun Eater. Should I continue to use Sun Eater or use King's Defender without mongoose or do something else? Help would be appreciated. (My hit Rating is 0, expertise is 6)
I got this two days ago.. drops from chess. Didn't have money for mongoose so I just put a 20+ agility on it.
good for pallys? with +40 spell dammage on it.
Not realy, much better tanking weaping for pallys would be the sword Off gruul, but you will have a hella time gettin that since casters want it aswell
