This trinket dropped off Magtheridon, in Magtheridon's Lair, for the guild Death and Taxes on Feb 27, 2007.

This trinket looks a bit strange... most people are probably equipped with spell hit to avoid resistances so in order for this to work u have to what? go low on spell hit so u leave some room for resists?
if i was looking for passive dmg and active dmg bonus i suppose i would aim for

In Molten Core-like instances this would be good.
I mean, against creatures with high resistance vs specific Magic School.
By mentioning MC, I meant that a mage could throw some Fire spells and get them resisted, then go back and spam Frost/Arcane for 10 sec and so on.

Comparing this against a single trinket like the Icon of the Silver Crescent is hardly fair. We have (2) trinket slots to use. Most people that would even come close to having a chance of obtaining this trinket will probably have had Silver Crescent for awhile.
This is still one of the highest passive caster DPS trinkets in the game. Resists are unfortunate and cannot be avoided. Thinking of ways to increase the proc rate of the trinket is silly, as anytime a spell is resisted, thats not good. This trinket has an interesting way of making something bad end up being quite nice.
Hopefully one day I will be adding it to my bag of tricks.

let's see...
10 second's worth of casting with +170 damage = +485 damage before talents.
So basically every time this trinket procs, you lost the damage of a single spell, but gained 600+ damage from this trinket, depending on your talents and the spells you are using.
Having lots of +hit gear is still better, but this trinket is the next best thing for casters with no easy access to +hit (all besides Arcane mages and Shadowpriests).

Actually people need to quit thinking of this trinket in regards to how much it 'sucks' and how much it could be used to your advantage in certain situations.
As with all high-end instances, there are times when certain bosses/mobs have high resists to one school of magic. - If you (say as a mage) can spare 1 global cooldown to purposely fire a spell that you KNOW will resist, you could consider this trinket overpowered in that situation.
Take for example shade of aran who pops water elementals at like 30%....your constantly having to move in that fight. So why not target a water elemental real quick, icelance it (I'm not sure if this trinket works on 'immunity'...so maybe this isn't the best example) then go to town on Aran.
Either way, this trinket may seem 'teh suck' to some of you, but to those who know how to use it in certain situations it could be quite useful.

As far as % to hit goes:
1% spell hit chance increases the base chance for a spell to land against a target by 1%
If your target is the same level as you, a spell has a base chance to hit of 96%.
If the target is +1 level compared to you: 95%
+2 levels: 94%
+3 levels: 83% if the target is a mob, 87% if the target is a player.
+4 levels: mob: 72% player: 80%
+5 levels: mob: 61% player: 73%
So in other words, this trinket is fekkin uber @ heavy boss encounters, especially if you're a frostmage due to binary frostbolts (and ya want a steady linear dps).
You're whining, ignorant speculations and xamples sucks :p

I use it with the Icon of the Silver Crescent.
I'm a shadowpriest, and I cast near non-stop...I can tell you that on any given boss, I'll be resisted once every 1-2 minutes. Heck, on Nightbane tonight, I was resisted at least twice a minute.
100% proc rate on resist. That fantastic. It ups my dps quite appreciably, and thus my mana/health return to my party.
Also, if you have a resist during the 10 second proc, it currently resets the timer. So, in a way, lower hit can help you with this trinket.
Don't knock it until you try it. (Going to go try out PvP with it now.)

As a mage, just came to think of the slight advantage you get particulary against a rogue.. as he CoS, you just fire up icelance, get this baby to proc wait 5 sec and then AP->Trinket->PoM.
imba in arena, so-so in pve.

Why this trinket seems terrible for a mage, by a mage:
Fireball - A resisted fireball means 1900+ damage is lost. It would then take ~10 fireballs cast with this trinket to make up for that lost damage. You only have time for 3-4. Clear loss.
Scorch - just as unforgiving since you only get 43% of the damage buff each cast. You'd need to cast just as many times to get your lost damage back.
Arcane missles - is probably ideal if you want to use this trinket as a mage, since a resist off a single pulse will more than likely proc it. If you're already working well with arcane missiles in a raid, this trinket can probably up your damage. I'd go for a lightning capacitor over it though for AM. I'm not supporting AM builds in any way, but if you happen to be using it, this trinket would be worth testing.
I could see shadow priests and locks using it. A DoT lock only loses 1.5 seconds of GCD on a resist and a single tick of a DoT. They easily recoup that loss and mana is becoming less of an issue for them. Shadowpriests get similar advantages with resisted ticks from mindflay and SW:P applications. The mana loss on a resisted SW:P is pretty ugly, but the resulting damage buff lets them return more mana/hp to the group, which is its own reward on top of higher DPS.

This is an amazing trinket for a Spell damage paladin. If I am spamming rank 1 consecration, as well as judgments, and my SoR hits. I do about 80 attacks that can potentially be resisted each minute. If a boss has a 5% chance to resist each of those 80 spells this trinket is going to be up more than 60% of the time. On average over time this will equate to about +100 spell damage. Plus the 42 base that is rather a nice trinket. :)
That is assuming consecration resists will trigger it, but I don't see why they wouldn't.

Right now, with my gear, I have about 10 percent +chance to hit (14 with a draenei elemental shaman in my party). I'm usually the highest DPS caster in my raid. This trinket would cost me about 1.2 percent hit (replacing neltharion's tear). I'm not sure if the dps increase from the proc is equal to the hit loss.
That said, I think I would resist plenty to get this to proc, without removing any hit gear which would further gimp my DPS. I think this is great for a mage, since mages have more trouble hitting the +hit cap. The 6 percent chance I have to resist on cast is plenty, and this would help to mitigate what I lose on those resists.

As it stands, the single most effective way of upgrading your DPS/DPM as a Mage is gaining more +hit.
This trinket is alright for the people who raid and haven't gotten the picture yet, but for anyone who actually knows how to gear up, with sufficient hit, this item quickly loses its value.
It'll only get worse for its place in the game as jewelcrafting develops and more spellhit gems become available.
If you've got the honor to count yourself amongst the crit/damage whores who still lack in DPS due to laughable hit, by all means get this, you'll make it easier for the sensible Mages to gear up.

With the buff to 54 +damage, this is hard to pass up, plus the fact that 1% of your spells will resist.
Assuming you casted a spells every 1.5 seconds (like scorch) with 16% to hit on a boss, this trinket would go off every 2.5 minutes for 10 seconds, which is about 10 +damage over time.
So with the best hit gear, this trinket is worth 64 damage, and scales as up as you have less hit gear. However, trinkets like Icon will get you a temp buff when you want it (good for Enrage) so some may prefer that trinket over this.

After using this trinket, I would like to add that even when a spell hits, a secondary effect such as Shadow Weaving, Winter's Chill, Shadow Embrace, etc. can be resisted (even if it is already stacked to its maximum) and will trigger the proc effect.

I have 16.66% Spell Hit (Counting talents)
When I first rolled on the item I was interested in the spell damage it gave pasively.
I assumed the proc wouldn't activate often for me since I was at 16% spell hit. However the proc on this little trinket actives quite often.
So this is a amazing trinket good for anyone that wants +spell damage.

i have a 43/1/17 lock. for affliction spells, I ~nearly~ do not have resists, for shadowbolts I have ~some~, so, lets say, I see a resist in every 2 minutes (very rough calculation).
10sec in every 120sec, 1/12 of the time; 170/12 is about 14.
54 + 14 is 68. +68 dmg up in average, I say it sounds good. for every other caster, who has less hit, the number is greater. even better.
comparing this to Silver Crescent (43 + 155/6 = 69 spell dam), they are very close.
comparing it to Darkmoon Card: Crusade (80 spell dam, after some warm-up, only good for bosses), hmmm.
I will wear the eye for trash and the card for bosses.

This trinket is very nice. The passive damage boost is awesome and with the proc it is great. Especially for destruction locks who get no + hit talents when speccing into the destruction tree, it certainly makes resists a lot more bearable.
On a side not this is also good fun with Cloak of Shadows, cast an instant cast when CloS goes up, get your damage buff, wait for the Cloak to wear off and pop you 'use' trinket and you've got rogues QQing on the lock fora again :P

Has anyone used this while pvp'ing, again rogues with Cloak of Shadows up? I think it would come handy there.
I agree that it's a fantastic trinket for pve though, as at boss fights you can't help but having a few resists, and this helps you recover from the dps loss. And the passive damage bonus is great too.

I think the real use of this trinket is for classes with +hit from talents that only affect one of their magic schools. An Affliction lock with maxed Suppression can purposely keep his +hit on gear at a Minimum. If his Destruction Spells have only about 3-4% additional Hit chance he can probably keep the buff by casting searing pain every now and then. But I doubt it is even possible to neglect +hit that way with any decent raiding gear.

Although not obvious at first this trinket suits a deep arcane mage.
Deep arcane only requires 6% spell hit from gear due to the 10% spell hit bonus to arcane spells from talents. But arcane builds use spell rotations, such as:
AB->AB->AB->AM->scorch
The scorch only inherits the spell hit bonus from gear, 17%-6% = 11% chance to resist. Although the scorch adds neglible DPS (its more of a spacer to ensure you get a 1.5 sec low-mana-cost AB next rotation) it has a decent chance on the rotation of proccing this trinket.
So deep arcane mages get to have their cake (reach max spell hit) and eat it too (decent chance of proccing this trinket)

Amazing for a Tankadin. Holy spells are binary as well. Each tick of consecrate can be resisted, each swing of SoR can be resisted, every judge or holy shield proc can be resisted. +Spell hit has no room in the tankadin itemization.
So it can and WILL happen almost constantly.
Of course it's not exactly a "tank" item, but can be incredibly nice in those high threat situations. The infamous aoe tanking.

Similar to the arcane mage who includes scorch in his/her rotation to attempt to proc this trinket due to a reduced +hit rating for spells outside of his/her talent spec, as a night elf shadow priest, I use the now infinitely more useful (since patch 2.3) starshards racial spell to proc this trinket. Because it is classified as an arcane spell, it does not receive the hit bonus from my shadow focus talent. The best part is that it doesn't cost any mana!

Assuming perfect conditions (no latency), no interruptions in casting (no silences, knockbacks, damage taken, or moving around), and spamming Arcane Missiles (one hit every second), in a 10 minute fight, you'll get 600 ticks of Arcane Missiles in, meaning 6 resists through the whole fight.
Also assuming that you get no overlapping procs (which would be ideal), you'll get the 170 spell damage for a total of 1 minute in a 10 minute fight. So that means that the proc itself is worth a passive 17 spell damage over a 10 minute fight, in those conditions.
Now lets assume that you're fighting Magtheridon, moving to click cubes, standing there not casting while you're cube-clicking, you run out of mana for a while, have to Evocate or wand while you're waiting on a potion cooldown, moving out of Cave Ins, etc.
Lets say that overall, with all of that going on, you manage to get a cast off (on average) every 3 seconds. That's probably a lot more accurate than a cast every second without having to move at all and never running out of mana.
If you get a cast off every 3 seconds, that means you'll get 200 spell hits during a 10 minute fight. 1% (2) of those are resisted, so you'll get 170 spell damage for a total of 20 seconds. Spread that out over a 10 minute fight, and that averages out to a total of 170/30 = 5.666666 spell damage overall.
I think my math is right, if it's not, please correct me.
Assuming a spell hit every second, this trinket is worth 54 + 17 = 71 spell damage.
Assuming a spell hit every 2 seconds, this trinket is worth 54 + 8.5 = 62.5 spell damage.
Assuming a spell hit every 3 seconds, this trinket is worth 54 + 5.6 = ~60 spell damage.
This post is long enough, so I won't get into the math, but the Icon of the Silver Crescent is worth 43 + 15.5 = 58.5 spell damage over a 10-minute fight (regardless of how often your spells hit).
So I think this one is better than the Icon. Especially if you're an arcane mage that uses Scorch in your rotation, or any other caster that uses multiple schools of magic and has lower than 99% chance to hit on one of them.
Any good caster will have their spell hit capped for at least their main school of magic by the time they're killing Magtheridon anyways, but even if they do, this trinket is awesome. Too bad i've passed on it twice now...wish I had done some theorycrafting first.
/tar Pledioch
/kick
Edit: Oh yeah, and i'm currently using the Icon and the Darkmoon Card: Crusade (passive 80 spell damage), and having 2 passive trinkets (I think, unless you make macros to automatically use your trinkets every time they're on cooldown) is much easier than having an extra click to do. So if this drops again i'm freakin taking it.

I am not sure where you got 15.5 spell damage value for the Use: portion of the Icon.
155 spell damage for 20 seconds/2 minute cooldown means it will be up 1/6 of the time. 155/6 = ~25.87, not 15.5, assuming you are using it every cooldown. That makes the overall value for the trinket 43 + 26 = 69 spell damage on average.
Icon clearly outclasses this trinket if you are hit capped, for most classes.

I wonder the same thing. Cause when a warlock has 16% spellhit(202 hitrating) the hit cap is reached. no matter what you do to raise it higher, you will always get that 1% resist.
So for a highlvl trinket, in reality this will proc 1% or the time. My question is this, will it proc when a tick of the DOT is resisted? or will it only work when you cast the spell, and the whole DOT is resisted?

wont hit cap a mage you say?
I was still on my 1st few kara runs, and was hit capped without any talents for spell hit. It's very easy to obtain spell hit gear, if you jst socket for it.
And now I'm in SSC/TK, arcane specced (and yes my mana last jst as good as the fire-clearcast mages, I wonder what they do wrong tbh) and are trying an arcane / icy veins specc, it's great and the higest dps I've reached so far (and yes again, I have thought about the fact that I have upgraded my gears).
That gives me room to get 10% arcane spell hit from talents, just as good as any lock.
And I'm able to go AB AM rotation, and even spam the AB a bit when I feel like having some fun! lol
The only boss I've encountered that's arcane immune is curator, but to make up for some lost dps there, my arcane missiles are doing a great job on the adds.
I know it says on WoWWiki that VR is arcane immune, but nah, he really isnt..
Alltho, this trink would be nice since I suppose it will proc as soon as one of my missiles is resisted, and even overcapped as I am, I do get more than 1 resist during 2 mins. So, compared to a trink that's got a use like: 150 spell dmg 15 sec 2 min CD, this is gonna add more spell dmg, without me trying to get a resist as I've seen suggested..
So atm, without any trinks from ZA, my dream pair would be this one, together with Icon of the Silver Creasent, which I allready have. :)

Think about this, "when your spells are resisted, grants you 170 spell damage"
What do rogues do when they deal with mages warlocks or priests. Use cloak of shadows.
What does cloak of shadows do? "95% resist to ALL FORMS OF MAGIC"
Meaning youre guaranteed more damage against those pesky rogues.

Got this awesome little trinket last night. To answer some questions:
1) The Proc is applied only when a spell is fully resisted
2) The Proc dose not stack, but the timer refreshes with multiple resists.
3) This trinket is very awesome for the +Spell Damage alone, and the Proc is great for making up DPS time when a Raid boss resists a spell.
4) You can have another DPS trinket effect active at the same time (ie. Xi'ri's Gift, or Glowing Crystal Insignia) . While the effect doesn't stack pe se, both are counted as separate effects and thats a big DPS boost.

Des someone know, if the proc is always applied, whether a spell is resisted, or is there only a chance of a proc?
If it always proc, if a spell is resisted, it is a huge improvement in a boss fight for a warlock, since for the main attackspells the warlock has no talent, which improves the hit-chance. So I expect that for a warlock the bonus is almost all the time in a boss fight active. Very nice!

More then that, though, this is an very beneficial trinket to have in PvE, high level mobs tend to have a high resist rate, even with abit of +hit gear. This trinket is a very good way to make up for damage lost by resists.

Of course this trinket has it's situational benefits like cloak of shadow rouges, destruction warlocks, or felhunters, and it has a great ability of allowing a caster to get no spell penetration gear or talents and focus on other stats, but the best benefit for this is that it guarantees when you cast a spell it is not a waste of time.
You could use the trinket as an easy way to proc the buff in both PVE and PVP but more often just focusing on dpsing the target and letting it take it's course naturally without purposely forcing the proc will allow you to maintain a higher dps. As a warlock with a spec that doesn't recieve benefits to crits, spell penetration, or spell hit, it is important to me to maintain as high of spell damage as possible. Right now I almost have 1K spell damage with only my personal buffs. I can make sure that the high DPS isn't going to waste if I have this trinket.

really nice trinket no matter what some of you seem to think. you're just looking at the proc which says RESIST, not IMMUNE...) it has +46 spell damage, in case you dont know thats awsome enough as it is. then the whole resist proc is very good, epsecially for locks (more afflic) because its not like you have 150+spell damage, and every spell does an extra 150 damage. some spells take more then what you have (i.e. CoD which takes 180% of your spell damage), and some take less (i.e. shadow bolt, only takes like 80%) so to have an extra 150+damage every time my spell is resisted is awsome, could equal to a big boost in dps. say i have a DoT resisted it procs i put up all my DoTs again and those spells all get the% of the spell damage they are supposed to. thats freaking insane

Each hit in channeled spell could proc this..only one needs to get resisted.

The proc is just an added bonus. You don't want to or need to drop +hit gear to increase the proc rate b/c that would be stupid and it would decrease your overall dps.
Even with maxed out +hit and shooting 3 sec fireballs, you'll be resisted at least once every 100 fireballs (1 in 300 secs ... 1 proc every 5 mins). half this for a scorch mage. On average w/ EP (mage talent) a mage will ahve 11-13% +hit, leaving a 1/20 or 1/25 chance to be resisted. that's one proc every minute to 75 secs as a deep fire mage. Which is less than trinket CDs. Making this trinket ... leet and well designed.

The time I can see this being most useful is in the hands of a insta-DoT class (either a warlock or a shadow priest). With mages, like people have said, if you get this thing to proc that means you just wasted 2-3 seconds casting a spell that should have done 2k dmg, plus a good chunk of mana. This makes the proc basically a consolation prize. With insta-DoT classes, if you get resisted you just click the button again and you get a powered up version of the spell that just got resisted. And the fact that you wasted mana is less significant because DoTs *generally* cost less mana than nukes.
Not to mention the flat +damage is pretty tricked out.
Warlock item ftw

It does proc on 100% of all resists (in case it wasn't said already).
I was in Shatt Halls playing as my GF's Lock, and I had 2 DoTs resist within the 10 sec timeframe and I had the proc for the full 10 secs on the 2nd resist, therefore it has NO HIDDEN COOLDOWN.
However, the 2nd one proc'ced as the 1st was ending, so I can't tell if it adds another proc-buff, or simply resets the timer of the existing proc back to the full 10 secs. (I could not tell if it can double proc or not. Given 100% proc rate, and no hidden C/D, I don't see why not, unless it does a timer reset.)
I did notice, it only procs on FULL resists, not partials, so for a fire mage / destro lock the proc would almost be useless. (Still can't argue the nice raw +damage.)
Afflic-Lock/Frost-Mage/S-Priest trink imo.

This is not a bad item but for a Boomkin it doesnt help much, I get full resists on reg mobs once in a blue moon. Bosses (currently only have +5% spell hit still working on some of my gear) Will almost always partial resist then full resist, And for a spell that takes 3 seconds to cast +170 spell damage for about 3 casts isnt to amazing. It would give after talents ~224.4 spell damage.
Otherwise overall it would be good for a DotaLocka or someone with spell that are easy to recast if resisted.
Now if this procs off of Starfire Stun also. All the better. Still doing the attack and now +spell damage for next couple of attack.

More of an affliction lock trinket seeing how they canst mostly instant casts and to get the full effect of it simply take some points out of suppression. with the amount of spells your gonna be casting (UA, siphon life, insta corruption, immolate, one of your many curses, shadow bolts and drain life) your most likely going to be resisted seing how with capped hit you would still have a 1% resist and having to refresh your dots every 20 seconds or so and one resist isnt going to be too big of a deal for you because there instant casts. (also great for dueling rogues when they CoS cast something and free 170 spell dmg)

Ok, I have an idea, feel free to shoot it down if it would not work or would not benefit lock dps as much as I think it will.
Basically, I'm wondering if lvl 1 versions of spells get resisted more often. If they do, then simply setting a lvl 1 curse of agony first in your spell cycle would mostly likely get the proc. Then every spell you cast afterwards would get the very nice bonus dmg. This would only work if lvl 1 spells are in fact more likely to be resisted.
As someone mentioned before, I believe that locks get the most benefit from 10-20sec dmg trinkets. I pop my trinket, cast siphon life (100% bonus), agony (100%), corruption (100%), immolate (not sure, but initial dmg gets probably 70% and dot gets some bonus too), and as many shadowbolts as I can before time is up. 3 instants, a 1.5 second cast, then 1 or 2 shadowbolts at 2.5 all within 10 seconds is 6 spells, maybe more, all getting some portion of this dmg. Other classes do not have as many instants as locks and won't maximize the 10 seconds as well.
I'm not saying "this is for locks only," I hate when people say that #$%^. Just saying we can maximize the dps bonus. (oh yeah, if nightfall procs thats an instant shadowbolt added to the mix).

Assuming you've maxxed out your hit rating like a good raiding caster should, you still have a 1% chance to have your spell fully resisted. No matter what spell it is (some people call it "missing").
For mages casting 2.5 sec Frost or Fire bolts let's do some simple math:
This will proc, on average 99/100 casts that means:
99 * 2.5sec casts = 4.125 minutes. On average, assuming you ONLY cast bolts this will proc every 4.125 mins.
Throw in some FireBlasts, IceLances or Scorches and this dramatically increases. That + the base damage increase = One great trinket. Regardless of Hit Rating.

Great for demo/afflic locks in PVP/BGs. It takes less than .5 secs to put either seed of corruption, corruption, and curse of agony on someone. So, id be happy if I had this trinket and one spell was resisted. = )

Does it already proc from arcane missiles now?
Does it proc from fireball and ignite DoT resists?

I don't think this means you can take out all your +hit gems just yet. The proc looks nice but it is misleading. You will get the maximum benefit of this trinket on raid bosses if you have no spell hit rating, meaning your spells are resisted 17% of the time. This is a functional 17% drop in your dps. +170 damage doesn't really seem to make up for losing 17%.
Doesn't seem worth it IMO, sure the passive is nice, but the effect is next to useless, it would have to be like +200 or more to be worth it.

This is an ok trinket if you do not have the 16% spell hit rating, but once you get a 99% chance to hit, this trinket loses its luster.

i see this as a aff locks dream, if your dot is resisted, you lose like, 500 mana max? and a gcd, just reapply dots. getting a proc from this and the 2 piece voidheart set is just insanely awsome

Does this seriously proc off of thorns and other Tankadin abilities?
If so, it's most definitely the best threat-generation trinket for Prot Pallies in the game.

most of the above posts seem to not notice the spell damage on this trinket, and focus on the proc. i admit the proc is geared towards certain spec's of certain classes but to ignore the +dmg and assuming the people getting a shot at this are in tempest/hyjal is just silly. most of the people rolling on this probably don't have a shot at a higher +spell damage trinket in the near future.

Has anybody noticed yet that this could be godlike in the hands of a prot pally when tanking boss mobs?
Tanking pallies have so many aspects to consider with their gear that spell hit rating usually takes a very low priority. We aren't special in any regard -- we still need +16% from gems to max out our chances to hit with judgment, concecration and holy shield (we get +3% from talents, but that's it).
Now, throw this trinket into the mix and it effectively gives the pally a whole crapton more threat potential (since their spells are resisted fairly frequently on boss mobs). Aside from casters seeing the tanking pally as a loot $%^&* (as always), can anyone find fault with this?

This is a solid trinket for most fresh 70 casters who are not able to reach the spell hit cap, though it should not be used to deliberately stay below spell hit cap.
For the upcoming Wrath Classic: Once the Wrath pre-patch hits, spells that miss will no longer display as "Resist", and instead will show up as "Miss". Fortunately, this trinket will also proc from spells that "Miss".
However, the 1% innate miss chance on spells has been removed, making it impossible to proc this trinket once you are hit capped. Given the ease of reaching hit cap now, this trinket is mostly just a stat stick.

This is not that great trinket. Everyone raiding the high end raids has 16% hit rating. Making "resist" have a change of 1%. Thats like throwing 100 shadowbolts and maybe you get one proc. wohoo.
When infact there is trinkets that has similiar equip spell damage but has quaranteed on the spot spell damage addition just when you click an icon. Wouldnt use this at all.
