This appears to have a bug(visual?) in the item description; it gives 4 block rating in addition to the 4 dodge rating. it is just below the socket gems and just above the socket bonus. Has anyone else seen this? I socketed +4 defense rating +6 stamina and +18 stamina +5% stun resist gems into it.
Check if you really get both socket bonuses.
I had the same effect on an item whose gem socket bonus got changed in a patch. Both were shown afterwards but only the new one would actually be applied.
Powerful earthstorm diamond (18stam, 5% stun resist) combined with a Solid Star of Elune (12 stam) seems to be a good combination for this item, since +4 dodge rating isnt really a great socket bonus.
Unless you need the avoidance to maintain uncrushability, go with stam!
On a sidenote for the enchants, get the keepers of time revered glyph (16def rating, 17 dodge rating). Alternatively, warriors can get Prescense of Might from Zul'Gurub, which would require farming with the help of guildies.
For all the Blood Elfs out there, that have "hair with attitude", this will clip your hair causing it to be flat.
Just a fashion note for everyone :)
How does this compare to Oathkeeper's Helm?
Oathkeepers has a red and a blue socket where the T4 has a meta, but the T4 has dodge instead of mp5, and more stamina.
For myself, I'd probably take the T4 instead, am I wrong?
And I'm not entirely sure which gems to stick in it.
I've already put in a Powerful Earthstone Diamond, or whichever one gives +18 Stamina. But I can either put in an Enduring Talasite or a Solid Star of Elune in the Yellow Slot.
I already have 499 Defense, it's just a question of what's better. An additional +4 Defensive Rating (about +1 defense), and +4 Block Rating. Or having +60 health. I have almost 11k health unbuffed and I know I could always use more. But does 60 health outweight a bit more block / parry / dodge?

I can see very little advantage in using this one over:
(Faceguard of Determination) which essentially has the same stamina (because you will get the socket bonus), more defence, the same dodge and the much needed shield block rating.
I would take the block rating over the int and spell damage any day (except maybe for heroics and other 5 mans).
Block rating will help you block usually mitigating your block value per hit. In high level instances and most heroics, npcs hit slow for large hits, meaning less spell dmg per time reflected on them, less block value per time because the hits aren't fast. If you want to let your mages go nuts and kill the boss fast, more spell dmg means more aggro, more threat margin, and block rating isn't that useful considering a tankadin can spam holy shield raising block rating by 35% with libram of repentence.
Dodge is as useful for Paladins as any tank. Yes you don't gain agro from dodging, but you are preserving your small health pool. If you blocked every attack you would soar up the threat meter, but be dead. That is why you need to balance everything. Avoidance is the best mitigation (I.E. parry and dodge you take 0 damage). I'd rather generate agro from consecrate, exorcisms when available and judgements then from getting pummeled all the time. I've found agro isn't the problem... usually it is staying alive and occasionally running out of mana, which is solved by pots early in the fight.
P.S. I wouldn't use retribution aura for serious tanking, maybe 5 mans.
I think this is one of the few set pieces of the T4 Protection set that is worth being referred to as "tanking equip"!
This one and the shoulders provide good tanking stats as the others are even replaceable by blue items that just have less armor but WAY BETTER STATS!
Seriously, Paladins are excellent tanks since BC and the D3 set helped out great for Dungeons, Heroics and half way through Karazhan. But WTF? Are Tankadins supposed to take a break, skill to healer until they join an SSC/TK Raid, roll for the T5 and skill back to tank? OK, you can assemble nice tanking equip in Karazhan, Gruul and Maghterion but non that actually says "Paladin"!
The set bonusses are excellent, as one may by now have sacrificed a lot +spell dmg by using swords like the Sun Eater or King's Defender for tanking and could use the extra damage this set provides.
Pleaaaaasssee add some sockets to the pants or some more +dodge / +block stats!
Hmmm.... got the Helmet and I'm truely not amused.
I am using it for heroic AOE Tanking but seriously... I prefer the faceguard for 50 Badges for ZA and in Kara for Bosses like the Prince and Nightbane. The extra int and spelldamage is nice for bosses who do not cause enough damage to have my mana replenished by spiritual attunement. This Purple Miner's-Lamp has less Stamina, no block.... Faceguard of Determination is the way to go!
UNLESS I get the set shoulders and/or gloves with this i will not use it as my main helmet... but then again, as I have the Parry-Gloves Badge reward and once the Timed Loot Shoulders from ZA finally drop, i will have to re-think my equipment completely... CURSE YOU BLIZZARD FOR CONFUSING ME!
Ok just to reply at the guy who said Dodge is nothing for paladins.
As tanks you use two different versions of gear. A BV (blockvalue) gear and Avoidance gear (dodge/parry).
That said I will explain what for. BV gear is used for trash, they don't hit very hard so the BV will negate most of the damage and give you threat thanks to holy shield.
Avoidance gear is used for Bosses. I hate to see the message: Nightbane hits you for 4500 (300 blocked), so why would I use block gear at him (yeah I need some BR to get uncrushable). With the avoidance gear you will get less hits, less dmg, and healers can sit back and heal a bit more relaxed.
This said: Pallies need dodge for bosses
