These pants (Tier4) are actually worst than Trial-fire trousers (dropped in Opera event), worst than Spellstrike pants and even worst than Battlecast pants...
Blizzard loves mages or what?
I have the Battlecast Pants, and I'd only take this for a 4 piece, but I'd prefer gloves, head, chest, shoulders.
The thing is, as an arena mage, with AP, Spell Power and the rest in frost I find these very handy due to the two set bonus, which is in my opinion the best set bonus in the game (If Frostbolts are your main dmg output, and you dont have Ice Barrier).
As the legs are without doubt the weakest part of the Gladiator set: I use these, the tier4 head and PvP/Gladiator gear in the remaining slots. The "high" intellect also compensates to some extent for the lack of mana alot of mages have in longer matches, these also helps you get close to capped PvP hit, which is about the only thing the PvP and arena rewards are missing.
The worst choice for any mage. Trial-Fire, Spellstrike, Battlecast and Gladiator are all better. Having both the Trial-Fire and Spellstike I won't even take these if the token is going to be dusted.
The only reason to take it would be if you needed it for the 2 piece while waiting for another token to drop or if you're too cheap to make the Spellstrike or Battlecast and don't do arena's but even then
are as good or better once you gem them up. Horrible Itemization.
I actually went ahead and spent some dkp on these after 2 weeks in a row the token dropped and no one wanted it. If you're looking to min/max, these aren't the pants for you. Spellstrike has better damage, Trial-Fire has better stats.
But this makes a nice piece to achieve some sort of happy medium. Most fights past Karazhan don't really give you the luxury of the Stand n' Spam we got used to in 1.0. It's not really viable to head into SSC or TK with 6000HP and 1200dmg and expect to live through most of the bosses. (And if you use the half-cast meta gem like I do, the passive spell hit is a nice way to cut down on the number of yellow gems you've got.)
Also worth noting that a lot of the people saying how bad T4 is are the same people complaining about mage mana regen, because they keep taking "superior" pieces with no spirit.
The +hit is important, but in comparison to trial fire, the damage/crit increase is far greater than the benefit of the +hit, if you do the theory craft.
Spellstrike is better than both, unless your a stat-a-holic. (Spellstrike has more damage, more crit, and about the same hit).
Another aspect to look at is what spec you are. For arcane mages, these pants are awful. We have +10% to hit in our spec, so unless you are just starting to get +hit gear (which is unlikely if you are in gruul), it would be much wiser to go with a different pair of pants. Even Khadghar's from BM would be better in this scenario.
Edit: Wow i cant spell...
The main knock on these pants is that they're the only epic PvE tier leggings without crit. (to see for yourself: filter by epic legs with crit that aren't a pvp set) The equivalent ilvl drop is Seventh Circle, which lacks stamina.
On top of that is that the other choices also have sockets.
ok i'm a pvp mage and i almost never do instances but i'd b willin to do a few raids just so i can get the 2 set bonus on this
if ur a mage that does pvp like me, u know how good that would b
but which ones should i get? i don't wanna get the gloves because the merc glad gloves give a good bonus, i don't wanna get the head b/c i'mma engineer and i'm about to get the epic goggles, and i don't wanna get the robe b/c i'm too lazy to get a group that wants to kill mag, so i'm prolly gonna get the shoulders and the pants.... anyone disagree w/ wat i'm doing? cuz i don't wanna get it and b like "crap, that was a waste"
I totally agree, it's almost like blizzard swapped the warlock and mage pants..... cuz the mage pants seem perfectly fine for a warlock and the warlock pants seem great for a mage
As an arcane PVE Mage, Spirit is quite important, it helps during raids and long boss fights. People don't appreciate it until later raids.
These honestly suck, try to compare them to Spellstrike Pants, even without gem slots they are almost equal...
Smack a Runic Spellthread on these pants and they are just as good as Spellstrike, just with better stats ;D.
Fun to get and free. > Paid for.
i guess these are the new tier 4 pants for mages.... omg
Personally I prefer Trial-Fire Trousers from Opera in Karazhan.
Much easier to get, and much, much better.
I wouldn't say that trial fire are better... but they are an great piece of gear if you socket them right but the reason you get these legs is for the set bonuses thats why i would replace my trial fire with this had i won the roll last night lol...
nice intel bonus and spirit for mana regen .
Designed for pure PVE (+hit and +dmg only) long and deep fights.
Its a sage piece
With the right gems in Spellstrike Pants, Legwraps of the Aldor dont make any sense for a mage to get. The only thing noticably different about the T4 legs is that they have much more intellect than Spellstrike Pants, and if you want that over stam you can gem for it. Really pisses me off that I wont even be rolling for these pants next time they drop.
I had to switch back to the moroes neck item to compansate the hitloss from the spellstrike pants. But It's worth it after all because I now have enough hitpoints for ssc eye and za, where I had to wear some PVP stuff recently.
So I would consider this an update to spellstrike.
I love the pants and was lucky enough to get them and the pauldrons of the aldor Today with my guild we finished Gruul's lair in less than 40 mins.
