Despite some other shields having higher basic values, this shield may in the end be the best choice, due to the two sockets.
This is a perfect shield for Prot Pally's who don't play a whole lot to attempt to get while still tring for
in Botanica if you have been unlucky in your runs to farm it. Even in the event the sunbird never drops, you still farm reputation for this item.
I'd like to see more like this.
For ultra health
two solid star of elune
+18 stamina (Shield enchant)
19 stamina (Alrdy on shield)
61 stamina = 610 health
not to mention other stats and set bonus.
Great Shield got it after TK runs
Instead of enchanting this shield with
(+18 Stamina) I opted to get the
(+18 Block Rating). I would suggest the +18 block rating rather than stacking stamina. If you want extra stamina, eat some food and get Well Fed. Nothing else but this enchant, and some items, can give you +18 block value.
I am keeping this shield over Azure Shield of Cordarra, simply because of the stamina difference. The Azure Shield, while beating this shield in every stat, is possibly a worse choice than the Crest of the Sha'tar because of the great stamina difference. Your looking at (with an 18 stam enchant on both), 49 stam on the azure shield and on this one, with 2 +12 stamina sockets, 61 stamina. Thats 120 HP right there with this one, with the other stats being a small deal better than this one. In the end, I believe this shield is the better option, as it gives better stamina.
Any good prot specced warrior will know that Azure Shield of the Coldarra is a better shield than this. The reason for that is because the Azure shield has more Defence, more Block valure, and more armor, which is just as important as stamina. Migitating damage to the point where you can take just as many hits while having less health is just as good as having that health.
Azure Shield of the Coldarra > Crest of the Sha'tar
This is a great shield, I did roughly 7 or 8 heroic mech runs for the Sun Eater. When that finally dropped I realised I was Shat'ar exaulted, so I got this shield. All of a sudden I had 2 really nice tanking items.
As for the debate as to which shield to choose out of this or Coldarra, I chose this one. The main reason was, although the Coldarra shield is better (only slightly) it costs 33 badges. As I have joined a raiding guild currently farming kara i'll just wait till we down nightbane and get this badboy
which has almost identical stats to the Coldarra shield and looks a whole lot meaner
For anyone possessing the Crest of the Shat'ar the next obvious step is kara, and it wont be long till you get the Shield of Impenetrable Darkness. Why waste 33 badges for the sake of +200 armour and for when something as good will drop half way through kara, go buy some chants.
Saying Nightbane is "halfway" through Kara is not exactly true. He is the toughest boss in the instance and will more than likely be the last one your raid will kill.
As for the shields, I have the Crest of Sha'tar now and love the stamina. I have enough badges to get the Azure shield but I want the trinket first. I agree with the above poster in waiting to get the Impenetrable shield instead of having two similar shields, the Azure and the Crest. Just don't think you will be able to get the Kara shield a couple weeks into it, more like months.
The sockets give it a bit of versatility. Healing in heroics with bad tanks make me want to /spoon with this shield. Thinking of getting it, and socketing with some +int gems...
Until have enough badges for the healer shield, or the one from Chest in kara.
Yeh same deal, was farming Sun Eater on alt then realised hey, only 2k rep from exalted. Saved my badges for the trinket/ring rather than the shield.
IN all honesty, I don't see any real reason to drool over this if you are already running heroics. if anything, this is a pre-Azure shield. The Azure shield is by far better for only a small "cost" of 120 health. 120 health isn't going to change the world, but the stats on the Azure shield will help greatly overall. Plus saying that one should wait till nightbane drops the shield is still not a good idea. You may have other tanks, might not be able to down 'em and/or are just unlucky when you do down 'em. The azure shield is much easier to get, by far, has pretty much the same stats and has a cool graphic. Who doesn't like glowing gear? LOL! At any rate, I would go with the azure shield over this any day. Trade a small amount of stam for a lot of other valuable tanking stats. This is pretty much a heroic shield, kinda. The only thing that's good about it is the small stam advantage....not much else. If you have the badges, get the azure first and save your gold for more important things :) Just my two cents ^^
i also agree with stub save ur badges for the worthwhile tanking gear as this sheild is just better in alot fo ways to the heroic badge one.
Got it last night and loving it wont be replacing it soon.
Actually... Armor does in fact suffer from diminishing returns unfortunately. Not in the combat sense like a stun effect would, but more rather the more you stack the less effective it is. It's arguable who ever said this didn't mean it in this manner but its true none the less, however more armor is always better.
First Post :)
What's The Sha'tar?
Well I was going Botanica over and over to get Aegis of the Sunbird and it refused to drop for me for incredibly long time. It finally dropped for me when I was already half way from revered to exalted with Sha'tar. I replaced it with this one short after. I like everything about this shield except for it's looks. It could have more interesting model imho.
i am wondering which shield is better, this one or azure shield of the coldarra, bought with badges. the other shield seems like it would have more damage reduction because it has more armor and block rating. however i cant say whether that shield is better than this one, because i can socket it with 2 +12 stamina gems. pretty much i dont know if more damage reduction or slightly less damage reduction with massive amounts of health is better. anyone know?
This shield has good versatility. I socketed it with 2 Enduring Talasite (+4Def +6Stam) to start off.
I picked this shield up as to start my Heroic grind on the HH rep instances (ramparts, citadel, shattered halls). Once I get my Badge of Justice i will pickup the Azure-Shield of Coldarra. After I upgrade i will swap the gems on the Crest of the Sha'tar to either two +12stam gems for max HP or two +resist gems so i have a resistance shield.
If you PVP you can always throw on other gems to assist your game. two gem slots is huge.. especially when the shield is nice to begin with.
Whatever floats your boat.
I'm in a state of semi disagreement with you. A paladin can tank very well I know, I don't play a paladin. A hybrid class such as a druid or shaman can excel in almost all areas of what they can do. I have seen some pretty amazing resto druids and some amazing Feral tanks. Paladins are just another hybrid class, sure you may not want a paladin to tank some of the new stuff such as Gruul and Magtheridon. But as long as the guy who's playin the character knows what he's doing you have no reason to complain.
Paladins have succesfully MTed all Kara bosses, read forums. And as OT they are perfect (assuming they are good players and know what they are doing)
Totally looks like something Batman would use.
any1 know a good and fast way to get exalted whit Sha'tar?
Personally I look for big stam when I'm doin my arena battles and this thing with 2 solid stars of elune (+12 stam a pop) and the +18 stam enchant can give a total of a whopping 60 stam on a shield. I dunno about you but that's definitly woth it over any spell dmg shield with stam (yes even the spellbuckler) for any SHAMAN. The loss in spell dmg/mana regen/spell crit or w/e is totally made up for by the extra armor of this beauty over that of any (required) lvl 70 blue shields (3600ish armor) and also, obviously, the huge stam. It didn't take me long to realize i was close to exalted sha'tar and what would happen if I got there. I would deinfitly recommend this shield to any pallies/shams that want to buff up their stam and get a solid shield in the process. Gl reaching exalted all, it's worth it.
btw great tankin shield too :)
I was evy curious what would be better between this or arena shield, i have just hit reverd with shatar and i went mortal strike for about 2 weeks in hope of getting enough points for the shield, would it be worth it to go back to prot and grinf rep for this shield or get about 500 more arena points and use the arena one?
This is getting buffed in patch 2.10 greatly. New stats are:
+13 Defense Rating
+24 Block Value
Do u have a source about that buff?
Check out his name, I would say thats his source ;)
But seriously, if they buff this, surely they need to buff the heroic shield aswell? This IMO is far more easy to grind, and will greatly outshine the Badges shield if your information is correct.
Many epic items get a small buff with 2.1
You can see improves by clicking on the "test" link right under the search form and switch to the ptr database.
The Coldarra gets buffed as well. Improves are about the same as for this shield.
I socketed two
gems into my Crest of the Sha'tar and slapped Enchant Shield - Resistance on there for a grand total of 13 resist to all schools. I use this shield for all my basic resist tanking fights - first boss of serpentshrine lair, mana tombs...
It may only be 13 resist total, but with these gems and the enchant, it keeps me from wearing one garbage green item so i can put on another piece of proper tank gear.
400 more armor, 25 more block value!
When i first got this I though, it's not much better than the
Aegis of the Sunbird
aside from the two gem slots. But after the 2.1 buff it's now WAY better. I don't see myself ever replacing this since I don't raid much. I love it though, just wish it had a better skin for an epic.
Why are heaps of warriors decking themselves out with enduring talasites and what not? Why do you all need more defence? After 490 (the magic number for warriors), any extra defence is disregardable. Just go with all +12 stam gems (Solid Star of Elune), or even the cheaper option of the +9 stam gems, w/e they are called.
I've been revered with Sha'tar for about a week until i decided to seriously start working on rep for this shield.. And know this the rep grind for this is mind numbing, the only great part of the rep grind was that i got the sun eater from heroic mech. I recommend getting a healer that needs exalted(since there is a nice healing mace from sha'tar) and just team up with him/her and run mech over and over until you get it. That's what me and a shammy healer did from our guild, towards the end we were finishing regular mech in under and hour, in about 50 or so minutes.
I'm already halfway to exalted with Sha'tar (not specially for the shield) because it's a great upgrade from
Aegis of the Sunbird
. However because of the graphic I think I'm gonna skip it and go straight for
Azure-Shield of Coldarra
which in turn is a bit better and the best you can get pre raid (with
Shield of Impenetrable Darkness
as first follow-up and then
Aldori Legacy Defender
, ofcourse). Too bad Azure-Shield of Coldarra has an ugly graphic too. They should make them better.
Equiping this shield actually buffs my defense rating by 25, not 13. Socketed with +12 stam gems. Shh...don't tell blizzard.
Nevermind, I'm a noob. Equiping it was enabling my meta gem.
The post that says 490 is uncritable is incorrect. You are not uncritable at 490 def skill. You have just reduced the chance to be crit so low that it seems that way. There are still mobs that can crit. Read the Elitist Jerks forums. There are lots of posts that are great sources of information about tanking, TPS, and such.
Sitting at 490 def reduces the chance to be crit by 5%, which is the basic chance for a mob your level to crit you for (providing your 70). Pushing it higher will reduce it even further, but when the mob only has a 5% chance to do it, it's kinda wasted. That's why people way that anything over 490 is useless. It's always good to stick at a little bit higher so that an upgrade won't throw you under. At that point it's good to grab more block rating, dodge rating or *shiver* parry rating gear / gems, as they provide more total benefit then the extra block/dodge/parry from the +def.
My two cents.
Back on topic, just started revered, with a bunch of sha'tar rep quests to do, gonna grind them out, and grab this shield. Looks sweet, nice upgrade to my
Aegis of the Sunbird
There is no such thing as PVP tanking gear. Flash PVP epics might save you against rogues and warlocks but not PVE bosses... Leave ur PVP gear at home and go for the gear real tanks want.
