The wind serpents in Sethekk Halls also drop these. Though killing nonelites is definitely a more lucrative practice.
1x Wind Scales = 10g :O
These are very easy to farm up quickly in Blade's Edge Mountains, in an area called "Scalewing Shelf", which is not far from Toshley's Station. Felsworn Scalewing and Scalewing Serpent both reside in the area and the scales can be skinned from both of them. They are used for a number of very nice epic crafted items, and are usually fairly cheap to purchase on the Auction House as well. ( If only we could say the same for Cobra Scales.. ) In the process you may also find yourself with a nice stack of serpent flesh which can be used to create spell damage food. :)
Cords for "Scalewing Shelf" - 67, 65
hello. i was wondering i tried to farm these scales from the Blades edge at the "Scalewing Shelf" .now is the drop rate bad there.for me i killed like 30 of these serpents and i only got 3 scales ,is this a normal drop rate percentage ,plz let me know
Killed 35 in a row in blade's edge, and still not one has skinned for a wind scale... no chance on earth that these are 20% drop rate...
These can also be skinned from the
dragonhawks in Zul'Aman
Farming for new belt, got 10 in about 45 minutes in blades edge, just east of deaths door. Watch out though, maggoc pats the area sometimes. Not amazing chance of scales, but knothide is good too.
Blizzard have secretely nerfed the droprate of basically all things you skin off animals, except knothide scraps and leather :S
These, as well as clefthoof leather are now real $%^&*es to farm and you'll spend hours trying to get enough since the droprates have been nerfed to about 5%.
Very good rate when skinning Scalewing Serpents, I've gotten 17 out of 21 so far in the last 15 minutes.
I've been farming these to help level my leatherworking. Then I found out they sell for about 11g each on my server. Wow! So I started farming them to sell and said screw the leatherworking! The drop rate is decent enough that I get over 200g an hour here.
The extra Knothide Leather I'm getting, I'm using to make the yellow patterns in my LWing to level it up. I figure using more leather is fine since I'm getting so much from grinding out the wind scales.

I noticed while I was farming these on my hunter in the area of Scalewing Shelf in BeM, that when I let the mob finish hissing (sounds like letting air out of your tires) as it died, that I had a much higher drop rate than looting and skinning it right away.
A piece of advice: don't farm them from the Swiftwing Shredder in Netherstorm! even if it say on the site that those have the highest drop% they probably have the worst drop rate of all of them! no kidding i kill them for 40+mins and only got one!
what are these used for?
can u loot these without skinning em or do u need to skin em?
from what i gather u need to skin them.. the drop rate for me is about 15% .. however clefthoof leather is a bi#$h to get :/ however if ya leark arond the start area in nagrand can get it by the tonn
Been killing the serpents in BeM, about 25% drop rate so far, collected 15 :)
Windhawk set here I come!
drops from scalewing serpents in edge blade mountains
It's a skinning drop,
according to Thott, and if it is anything like other skinning experiences, it can be either a low-% 'normal' drop, and/or from skinning.
Similar to Raptor Hides in that sense, or some quest items, like those bear skins in Azuremyst.
If you are looking to farm them, then it is better to 1) check the skinning drops, and go there 2)find a quest related to the mobs with decent drop %es, and/or 3)if you aren't a skinner, travel/quest with one.

Drops from the Dragonhawks in Shadowmoon Valley, at Eclipse Point
no, its not a normal low % drop. its a skinning drop. if someone skins and not loot it right away (full inv, skinning for someone else etc etc) thottbot records it as a drop instead of a skinning drop.
got one from Swiftwing Shredders in Netherstorm, near Tempest keep
Really good skinning drop rate (atleast for me) from Scalewing Serpent at blades edge :)
the scalewing serpents in blade's edge mountains have a 12-18% drop rate from being skinned.
the Felsworn Scalewings have about a 15-19% drop from skinning but there are less of them.
best to just fly up and down path on the right side of deaths door and up past forge camp anger
hope it helps

if u want wind scales people go and farm at eclipse point in SMV i farmed there and in 20 mins i had 14 wind scales its easy and remember YOU HAVE TO SKIN THEM!
Farmed them on Scalewing shelf in BEM. 18% drop rate, skinned of course.
3 in first 3 kills, rest took about 15-20 more kills.
Try Scalewing Shelf
(due south of Forge Camp Anger) and head North from there. Watch out for 70 elite Maggoc who wanders through...
Eclipse point, Killed approx. 100_110 Dragonhawks. Recieved 19 windscales from skinning. Thats approx an 18% skin rate. After 15 kills I was getting near a 50% skin rate for a short time.
2nd day of farming collected actual data:
Every kill you get a talon or feather. Used those to get kill numbers.
104 total kills
Kill Numbers I recieved the loot on:
Average of loot 19.2%
Numbers of skins in between Windscale loot:
average skins to get a Windscale 5.2
A few waits there as you can see, other times gold mine.
Either im lucky, or its a nice drop rate in BEM but I killed 26 and i got 9.
4th(N) 15th(F) 17th(F) 18th(F) 19th(N) 21st(N) 22nd(N) 23rd(N) 25th(N)
I also killed quite a few raptors that kept on getting in my way and these are the results:
Band of Dominion
(World Drop), 26 Knothide Leathers, 22 Knothide Leather Scraps, a few greens, and 9 Wind Scales. Nice farming if your bored. Hurray skinning.
All done in a 30 minute time frame. These numbers are actual data.
Day II/III Results
day 2-(All of these are from the normal ones)
-43 Serpent Flesh, cooked and sold for 40g.
-~11g trash loot
-11 Heavy Knothide Leathers
day 3-(All of these are from the normal ones)
-44 Serpent Flesh, cooked and sold for 38g
-~11g trash loot
-12 Heavy Knothide Leathers
-Another lucky world drop-
Crystalblade of the Draenei
Sold for 100g. nice.
These Two days were done in 1hr and the other in 1hr 15mins. once again, actual data.
Don't go charging in there like I did; as a farming area it's worse than shovelling Kodo dudu.
There are lots of roaming Bloodwarders (around level 68 or 69) who have an aggro range just short of an ICBM's. I accidentally aggroed one while I was still in Shattrath City, I think. They're not tough to kill unless you get one of the ones that gets down to about 10% and then heals himself to 100%, so you basically get to kill two for the price of one.
Then there are the Hawkstriders (level 70); the same two-for-one policy applies. Kill the guy and then kill his ostrich, but noooo, you can't skin the ostrich and it doesn't drop anything either, not even a Twitching Leg.
My hunter usually tries to get two or three mobs together and use multi-shot for greater efficiency but be careful; with the big aggro range of these bloodelves, you can find yourself fighting a battalion of them pretty quickly. They must have those push-to-talk cell phones.
But don't worry, you can always run into the lava river. They're too smart to follow you there and then you realize why: you can't get out because the side are too steep. Lovely.
These wind scales better sell for about 10G apiece because that's about what it would take to bring me back here.
Of course I'm exaggerating. The best way is to fly behind the bloodelf camp (42.69 for example) and start picking targets off one by one. The dragonhawks are easy to kill and if you're careful, you can manage the bloodelves. They drop Arcane Tomes and Sunfury Signets as well as some silver. Just watch out for the Crazed Colossi (69 Elites)in the valley behind. They have no sense of humor.
Guess I'll try SMV's Eclipse Point, because I know that I
be trying to get these scales in Netherstorm anymore - got one on my first kill, then NEVER saw another one - plus I routinely got jumped by 3 Wind Chasers at the same time as I was fighting the Swiftwings, since the whole area is
with them and their overlapping aggro ranges.
Not that I'm bitter.
I just went through Zul'aman, skinned a few of the dragonhawks leading up to the dragonhawk boss, very nice droprate
Not to pis on your parade Pendragon, but Z'A isn't excatly the place you go farm wind scales.., so im having a hard time seing your point!
SMW is my fav location with the dragonhawks, been here 4 times n' usually get a pretty good drop rate on em, but like all things it seems to variate.
Chill out Banshe(or whatever the spelling is), im just letting the general skinning public know that the dragonhawks in ZA are a source of wind scales, so if you are ever in ZA you might want to take the time to skin them rather than run past them
I aggree. Banzhe your a nob.
killed 78 scalewing serpents got 1 stack = 25.8%
you guys. i farmed for 30 min at least in SMV. I got 0! drops.
omw to BEM now.
I skin these in BEM due east of Tochie Station, Over 1100 kills with a 21% droprate (Skinned) since i started using mobinfo addon.
Due to Maggoc a 70 elite who roams the spawn area of the scalewings there are no bot farmers to be seen :). He is easy to aviod as his path is set and merely repeats but impossible to set a bot to avoid as he is regularly killed for a BEM group quest thus reseting.
On my server these sell for 7g50s to 12g. 95% of my listings sell within 12hrs and i also buy any i see listed at below 5g(which has only been 3 times) and relist. These scales have netted me about 6000g(Hello Epics)and are less hassle to farm than Clefthoof(Too many farmers in area) and Cobra(Too many aggroing mobs around)
