By the time (gear-wise) you're actually socketing items with epic gems, this will mostly like be the best DPS gem in the game, for Mages and most Warlocks. For these classes at near-end game raiding levels, haste tends to eclipse spell damage point-for-point as the greatest raw DPS increase.
The offset is that haste doesn't increase DPM (damage-per-mana), so this gem represents a very reasonable compromise between the two, with slightly lower DPM than a 12 spell damage gem, but higher DPS.
As is the case with rogue gemming (5 agi 5 hit vs 10 hit), the 5/5 gems (or 6/5 in this case) tend to offer slightly more benefit than pure stat gems.
Does the spell damage on this gem contribute towards healing also, or is it straight spell damage only?
Given that most theorycrafters value spell haste as 1 spell damage = .90 spell haste, this gem is not better than runed crimson spinel. The difference between the 2 gems being 6 spell damage and 5 spell haste, a simple conversion shows that the 6 spell damage is equal to 5.4 spell haste, or that this gem in total is worth 11.55 spell damage. This is a very slight difference, but it is a difference. This means, given a 3 socket item, putting in 3 runed spinels is approx. 1.35 spell damage more valuable than 3 of these.
If, however, your socket bonus is +2 spell damage or higher for 3 yellow/red sockets filled, then these become slightly better in that piece. This is where reckless pyrestones shine, they easily fill yellow and red sockets, allowing the possibility of socket bonuses. Granted, red sockets should still be filled with runed spinels, but if you can get a spell damage bonus out of your socket bonus, then these should be in the yellow slots. Keep in mind though, that you should not worry about socket bonuses if they aren't feasibly better damage (ie. if you have a piece with 3 sockets and one is blue, cram them all with runed spinels. Alternatively, if your socket bonus is not damage or not enough to top cramming spinels in, then cram spinels in.) A good example here is the Boots of Incantations (new badge vendor boots.) They have 1 yellow socket and a socket bonus of 2 spell damage. A reckless pyrestone would be more dps than a runed spinel in that piece by approx 1.55 spell damage, but only because of the socket bonus. These are, however, better than Quick Lionseye, which converts to a value of 11.11 spell damage, where this converts to 11.55 spell damage.

That bit is dubious at best. First of all the value of spell haste is dependant on class and spec. Second of all, it is very dependant on your other stats; for shadowpriests, the consensus is that at 1400 spelldamage, spell haste equals spell damage point for point. With less spell damage, spell haste is worth less, with more spell damage it is worth more. Similar considerations will apply for other classes, though the specific numbers will be different.
So this type of gem is not an entry-level choice, but by the time you get to tier 6 content it will be a very powerful alternative to the good old runed crimson spinel / runed living ruby.
5. If you REALLY want it, part with 350 gold on the auction house (you server will be different) for a Pyrestone and find a JCer to cut it for you.
Yes you'll pay through the nose for it, but it is an awesome gem, so rightfully so. I personally don't want every Tom, *!@# and Harry on every realm having these. We need less welfare epics tbh.
If this gem is better for you than 12 damage, then 10 spell haste is probably better than this gem too.
The advantage to this gem over the types that give a bonus to a single stat is that for the purposes of meta gems it's like having both colors that the gem is made from
When/If I get the Sunfire Robe, I'm gonna chuck 3 of these in it.
