Welcome to Büü's guide to keybinding for PvP (Player vs Player)! This guide will go over what keybinding is, how it is useful, optimal keybinds, movement keys, strafing, how to keybind, and more. This guide is for beginner players who want to get their feet wet in the PvP scene, and intermediate players who are looking to fine tune their game play.
What is Keybinding and How is it Useful?
Keybinding is basically assigning an ability to a specific key on your keyboard or mouse. The default keybinds are 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0,-,=. In an action-packed scenario, you don't want to be clicking your abilities. Every global cooldown (GCD) counts, and we can't make the most of our GCDs when we click our buttons. It may also be difficult to press 7, 8, 9, and so on while in combat. Knowing how to properly keybind abilities and implementing this playstyle into your game play will drastically improve your performance - and increase the overall impact you make in the battlefield.
Movement Keys and Strafing
Here we want to unbind our ‘Turn Left’ and ‘Turn Right’ keys, which are normally ‘A’ and ‘D’, and bind our ‘A’ and ‘D’ keys to ‘Strafe Left’ and ‘Strafe Right’, respectively. Press ‘Escape’ to toggle your game menu, and select ‘Keybindings’. Your screen should look like this once you change your binds:
This is a much more optimal way of moving around as opposed to what's called ‘keyboard turning’, which is maneuvering with ‘Turn Left’ and ‘Turn Right’. Simply hold down your right click button when you need to change the direction your facing, and move with your new and improved ‘WASD’ movement keys. This may take a little while to get use to, or you may instantly fall in love with your new movement binds.
Rebinding ‘WASD’ not only makes our movement more fluid, but it frees up two useful binds - 'Q' and 'E'. These keys are adjacent to where our hands are constantly hovering.
Note: You may unbind ‘S’ if you so choose to. It's not necessary, but it is an extra bind.
Optimal Ability Binds
Now that ‘Q’ and ‘E’ are free, we can bind our most frequently used abilities to them. For example, I have
邪能之刃
, my main fury generator, bound to ‘Q’, and my fury dump,
混乱打击
, bound to ‘E’. So, with our main abilities bound to ‘Q’ and ‘E’, we branch out and continue to bind our other abilities to ‘SHIFT-Q’, ‘SHIFT-E’, ‘R’, ‘SHIFT-R’, ‘F’, ‘SHIFT-F’, ‘1’, ‘SHIFT-1’, ‘2’, ‘SHIFT-2’, and so on.
Where you bind your other abilities is entirely subjective, but I recommend that the more important abilities stay closer to your ‘WASD’ keys. Ultimately, your binds should feel comfortable to you while also allowing you to press your abilities efficiently. For me, I prefer having my kick bound to ‘R’ since it is right next to my main damaging ability, and in high level arena, there are many times where you just can't afford to miss that kick. Being able to dish out the most damage or healing while effectively and efficiently utilizing your micro-plays is crucial.
Here are pictures of my keybinds, and where they're found under the 'Options' menu. Feel free to use the same binds, or modify them as needed so that it's comfortable to your playstyle. Personally, I bind my burst to ‘SHIFT-1’, my wall to ‘C’, and mobility keys to ‘V’ and ‘SHIFT-V’ (for
邪能冲撞
/
复仇回避
). My focus kick is bound to ‘4’ since it's right above ‘R’ - my main target kick. It is entirely up to the player to choose what keybindings are comfortable to them. These are just the binds that I find extremely comfortable, and that have brought me success. The goal here is to choose keybinds that feel fluid to you.

Consistency
Keeping consistent binds across your characters is very important. Let's say you have a Warlock, and you bind your kick to ‘R’. You wouldn't then want to have your mage's kick be bound to ‘F’. The same goes for most of your other abilities, whether it be
恐惧
,
变形术
, or
妖术
. If you have your major defensive cooldown bound to ‘C’, then it would be a good idea to have ‘C’ as the key for your major defensive cooldown on all of your characters. By keeping things consistent, you won't panic or get confused as often. For example, your healer may get caught in CC with no trinket, the enemies will be popping their offensive cooldowns to land a kill, and you'll know to press your defensive cooldown key without having to think for a second longer. This concept applies to all of your abilities. When you see similarities between spells across your characters, try to associate them with each other. Consistency is key.
Arena Targeting
There's a neat way to swap between targets in 3v3 Arena without having to click on them. If you have a mouse with buttons, you can bind Arena Target 1, 2, and 3 to the first 3 buttons of your mouse. Mine happens to display 'F1', 'F2', and 'F3' because I bound my twelve mouse buttons to my 'F' keys. Only the first three ever get used. If you don't have a mouse with buttons or choose not to use the mouse for arena targeting, you can use some of the open binds on your keyboard.
Furthermore, you can bind your crowd control abilities to the Shift-modifiers of your Arena target buttons. For example, ‘SHIFT-F1’ to CC Arena target 1, ‘SHIFT-F2’ to CC Arena target 2, and ‘SHIFT-F3’ to CC Arena target 3.
Final Thoughts
Learning how to keybind your abilities properly is the first step towards becoming a better player. It might be intimidating at first, and it may take a little time to get use to. Once you play around with the binds however, you will find your gaming experience to be so much more fun, interactive, and fast-paced. When you're able to make the most of every second, the game changes completely. I'm hoping you enjoyed this guide, and I'm truly excited that you're going to be experience World of Warcraft the way it's meant to be played.
