Magtheridon's Lair has been confirmed by Blizzard to be a quick, raid encounter, similar to that of Onyxia's Lair. It will be a raid wing of the Hellfire Citadel dungeon.
I could be mistaken, but I believe the raid is located somewhere underneath Hellfire Citadel, the room of the last boss of the blood furnace, the floor is see-thru, if you look below, you can see Magtheridon.
The entrance to the lair is on the west side of Hellfire Citadel on the ground, its on the ground of one of the sides of the Citadel just look around, as I entered (solo) I saw 2 patrols of 3 level 70-71 elites, they seemed to be humanoids not sure if sheepable/sappable.
Is there attunement or key for this place?
The trash in here is pretty annoying. There are 4 pulls of groups of 3 hellfire warders. The respawn timer on the trash is 1 hour giving, and if you have megtheridon engaged, and any of HIS channelers are alive and the trash warders respawn, they will aggro into Mags room and kill you all.
Each of the 3 mobs in the trash pulls has the same abilities
Shadow Bolt volley - range 41+ yards, you cannot los the bolts. Does decent damage. This is a cast time spell you can interupt it.
Rain of Fire - Summons a rain of fire, instant cast and not channeled, does very high damage, handle this spell by simply avoiding the fire.
Fear - Fears the warders 2nd highest threat target
Death Coil - Same as fear
Shadowfury - They very rarely use this skill, the trigger for it seems to be if the tanks aggro on this mob is low, he will use this attack which lowers everyones threat that is hit with it, thus making that warder far more annoying to deal with.
The basic idea for the trash is you have 1-2 tank on each warder, but since you will probably only be going in with 5 tanks in the raid, 1 tank on each is possible.
The pull, 1-2 hunters will misdirect pull to the tanks that are going the farthest distance
The warders will be fought in a line, each one pulled 40+ yards away from the other. so basicaly the first one is tanked near to where they were standing, the second one is taked farther back tword the instance entrance, and the 3rd tanked all the way back at the entrance. (This does not apply to the 3rd and 4th pull, but if you can understand what im trying to say on where you fight them, you can easily adjust the locations of those pulls)
Each mob will have a tank, a warlock, and a rogue assigned to them for CoT and Kick.
The trouble with the fight is tank aggro, they have very little time to do this, but each tank HAS to be the highest threat of thier mob at all times, if a random healer draws aggro, the tank will be second aggro and get feared, if that happens, people start dying in a massive hurry (The idea behind 2 tanks on 1 warder is that if one gets feared theres another one there that will have aggro, or that the second tank will be getting the fears, but this is not really a need if the tanks can handle them). Hunters will do the distance pulls as the tanks cannot run down, get thier target, and run back or else they will get triple shadowbolted, get healed big time if they survive, and lose thier aggro to the healers.
So the main idea is pull them back, get aggro as soon as humanly possible, cancel the shadowbolt volleys, and win. It takes several attempts to really get this trash learned, but becuase of the 1 hour respawn and the fact taht you want to get as maany Magtheridon attempts in as you can in that hour, you need to perfect this trash so that no more than 1 person dies to each group, so you save time.
Is this a 25-man raid instance? 40?
While Mag's seen a couple of nerfs since the original comments in this thread, it's still a challenging encounter. The trash leading up to him has become easier as people have picked up better gear, but on the fight itself, there are many roles to assign and bringing him down takes some preparation. A full guide to Mag is posted at
Just Got my t4 on my toon Chanks-Gurubashi ^^. ez fight, as long as people click on time. pretty much tank n spank
I have 70 mag,how much spell dmg do i need to have to get in this raid instance, can good geared pvp mag get in matheridon
If you clear the trash in the start, that means you can get near Magtheridon and the Hellfire Channelers without aggroing.
And I found out that when your waiting for the raid leader to finish saying the tactics, or waiting in Magtheridon's room for any other reason, the perfect thing to do to pass the time i play Jump-Rope with Magtheridon's tail.
Its really amusing.
On a side note : I made up this game!
Wats the reset days on mags lair?
What is the difficulty for this encounter? Would Karazhan-on-farming-stadium-gear be required, or SSC-gear, or what?
Thanks in advance.
Be sure to tank him away from all cubes and against a wall so you dont get knocked everywhere.
When you finish the blood furnace in Hellfore's Citadel, just look nderneath your feet !
Here is that big fatty :)
Just on the south side of Hellfire Citadel.
Yes - Mobs hit with Staves at 5.5-6.3K if you are only sitting at 2.5k armor (like a clothy or druid). But in bear form at 8.5k (cuz I am not feral) ... they ONLY hit for 3.5k a pop. Very managable when you start talking about tanks with 12k and or feral druids with 20+k armor.
Reign of Fire confirmed at a big ouch. Some say shadow bolts - but I didn't see it in my logs.
Anyways - we are just starting to get into Karazhan ... but we are going to start targeting this place and see what it offers.

Ok here's the scoop.
Mag's Lair is a 25-man raid instance which is for highly geared raiders. After clearing Kara multiple times Gruul's Lair multiple Times THEN! your ready for mag its useless to just go in and think you can do it in quest greens and blues. Also there is NOOOOO ATTUNMEANT! Just a simple raid instance south lower part of hellfire citadale in Hellfire Penisilla. He drops T4 chestp[iece items for all classes and some other random epics that are preaty nice. Also T4 is from kara(head/gloves) Gruul's Lair(Shoulders/Pants) and Mag(chest piece) T5 is from Tempest Keep: The Eye(25-man raid instance) i believe 2 or 3 pieces from there and 2 pieces from Serpent Shrine Cavern)other 25-man)
Hope that cleares everything up !~! :)
Becouse theres no actuall usefull info on Mag yet, heres how the fight goes.
-I highly suggest 4 or 5 well geared tanks, (we run it with 3, a fury warrior in his tanking armor, and a very well geared Druid tank for Mag) and a few locks to CC the summoned infernals
-Theres only 4 or 5 pulls to mag, and they are on a 2 hour respawn timer.
There are 5 summoners equally spread out around Mag casting some spell to keep him from moving. They also won't attack until you attack them first.
-These guys have around 250K health, cast a shadow volley which will hit anyone in front of them and in range, and they heal for around 40-50% of there health (i honestly forget what the exact percentage is) The two spells both need to be interupted, if too many heals get off you will wipe, they both have a very fast casting time, so the interupters need to be on there toes.
-Lastly each channeler will summon upto 2 infernals, theres different ways to controll these guys, my guild will bring several locks that just banish them. (but they can also be feared, trapped, frost nova works on them, as well as stun) these guys will disapear after a minute, so i don't recomend dps'ing them down, it's in my oppinion a waste of time.
- Mind-numbing Poison and Curse of Tongues works on them
- At 2 minutes Mag will be freed and your main tank needs to pick him up, just use misdirect.
-Also you need to have 3 of the channelers dead at this point in the fight or realistically you will all wipe.
Mag himself is sitting at like 4.75 million health, -hits for around 7K on the tank
-he cleaves for around 8K
-Blast Nova (this ones the pain) if this goes off it will wipe the group
-Quake is sends out ripples which doesn't really do much but interupt spells, also be careful cause if your hurrying back to your cube and this goes off it makes it impossible to move for alittle bit
So like i mentioned, and you will have noticed in the room, there are 5 cubes, exactly where the channelers were standing. All five of these must be clicked on (activated) by 5 people at once when Mag casts his Blast Nova, if it's done right, than the spell is interupted and Mag will take 300% damage until the cube's done. You need to keep in mind though that the cube will do 800 damage a second to the player thats channeling it, and the cube debuffs the player to where he won't be able to click on a cube for the next Blast Nova.
**So you need two rotations of players**
- When he hits 30% health he will cave in the walls, and the ceiling falls on the raid, dealing 6K damage to everyone
- from this point on, small parts of the ceiling will fall down, and it will one shot anyone it hits But theres alittle animation to warn you it's about to happen, so no worries.
-It's actually an easy fight once you bring down the channelers, but it's complicated.
-I also think he has a 20 minute enrage timer, but it's like a 10 minute fight, so you'll have won or wiped by than anyways.
-There is NO attunment
- And ya, your raid needs to be pretty epiced out and be able to react to the channelers.
-If your leading a guild and you can't down this. Don't think you can't go after Lurker or Void Walker, i know guilds who are almost through SSC that haven't dropped Mag yet
-Good Luck, he drops some nice loot
Tier 4 drops in: Karazhan, Gruul's Lair and Magtheridon's Lair
Tier 5 drops in: The Eye and Serpentshrine Cavern
Tier 6 drops in: Mount Hyjal and Black Temple
Stop whining about t4 in SSC and t5 in Hyjal...
Alright, heres the lore. Magtheridon was lord of Outland. Illidan came in and whooped his ass. He then took Magtheridon prisoner and is keeping him in Hellfire Citidel, using his blood to create buffed up Fel Orcs. The whole Blood Furnace instance is where they are changing the normal orcs into Fel Orcs. And the last boss of it is the Warden of Magtheridon. Thats why you can see him casting a spell to keep Magtheridon, who is right underneath him (Although unaccessible from this instance) prisoner.
Heh...having done Mag before and after the patch...it is sad. He is nothing after the patch. Not a challenge whatsoever. I kinda miss the old Mag.
Is this JUST as short as gruul´s Lair?
Plz Answer.. i kinda´ wanna know..´
Shorter. 4 pulls and your ready for encounter. If your guild is doing it for the first time it takes a fairly long while to explain all the ins an outs of the fight and make assignments. Even after the nerf this is still a much more complicated raid than Gruul's imo. My guild tried it for the first time as a guild only run last night with a lot of first timers(myself included) and got him all the way to 96%...lol.
We have been clearing Gruuls for a month now. So there ya go
Tbh, i have done this raid many times on my main. And i think its much easier than Gruul. It's pretty straight forward. Take the channeler's out in sequence, and Gruul is set free in 2mins. Mt grabs him, dps kick his butt and healers heal. Click the boxes to stop him channelling and hey presto! Just stay alert and you'll win :-)
yeh i reckon he would be a little harder than gruuls. just did gruul in a PUG
Mags is short as hell-really in my opinion its a good way to check if your ready for SSC. Mag is much harder then any boss in gruuls or kara.
well we had a druid at 1600 and he was outhealing the priests that had 2000+ heals so id say around 1700. i typically tend to go with 6-8 healers because this instance requires alot of raid heals. druids and shamans are perfect for this fight all they do is hot main tank and throw a hot on cubers and tranq and shamans just use chain heal. good stuff
o yea my first time i did this i pugged a grp (read a guide tho so knew what to do) did 2 attempts and got him to 40% then the raid grp disbanded. Hes easy takes about 10mins of explanations
Anyone notice how Mag says "My blood will be the end of you!"? Well if you were wondering what he means by that, he has HIV. Just saying.
Just did mag's last night, did first boss in gruul's after.I was with My Guild <Devious Gadflies> my other guild just merged with them and we already have mag down so we know we're good together,i got Eye of mag on a 91 roll and im happy with my new trinket XD :) 70 affl warlock Terokkar realm Yuunyuuzhan is my Name WOOT
