So having been busy with the site since the expansion came out, I'm actually not NEARLY as high level as I should be. My paladin was level 73 at the time of this writing, which is pretty tame considering the rate at which people are tearing through the new content. But as time goes on, I've realized that I have a problem with WotLK.
I've heard complaints that it's too easy, or that the new gear isn't good enough to replace the old, or other things along those lines. But the difficulty that
I
have is with instancing.
The instances in WotLK are
great
. I mean, I don't know if there are any people out there who haven't done them yet, but they're just
great
. The environments are bigger and more interesting. The fights are more nuanced, and more fun. They feel more connected to the game world--you don't feel as much like you're stepping out of Azeroth and into instance-land. You can see the Howling Fjord from the balcony of Utgarde Keep. There are cinematic sequences embedded in the instances to draw you further in--not long ones, just enough to hype you up and keep you interested.
So what's the problem? The problem is that everything
else
is so great
too
.
I have this whole completion anxiety thing. I don't like the feeling that I'm
missing
something when I play the game. Back in my Diablo II days, I used to walk obsessively around the outside edges of the automap, even though I knew full well that the map was randomly generated, and it made no difference whatsoever. The same thing grabs ahold of me when I play WoW--I want to do
everything
. Only in WoW, the game is made intentionally so that you
can't
do everything.
I've completed every quest in Borean Tundra, and I'm halfway through Howling Fjord now. I love playing all of these solo quests, the quality of the quest design is massively better than it was in TBC, and in TBC it was pretty awesome. But I'm already level 73, and both
Utgarde Keep
and
The Nexus
are designed for players as low as level 68. Now what's the fun of doing an instance when you're way too high level for it?
So here I am with a conundrum. If I go and try all the instance content, then I level out of the solo quests. If I do the solo quest content, I level out of the instances.
So what then?
How do you find a balance between the two, and what do
you
guys prefer to spend your leveling time on?
