DesMephisto's New Speed Leveling Record - 5 Hours 36 Minutes to Level 50 in Shadowlands

DesMephisto
has hurtled through the
Shadowlands
Alpha leveling process once again, taking a new character from
level 10 to 50 in just 5 hours and 37 minutes
, shaving about 1:20 off his
previous 7 hour record
. This allied race character was able to skip the 1-10 stage, but that only saved around 20 minutes and this wasn't an overly optimized race, due to dealing with a few bugs and blocked quests on the Alpha.
He probably leveled too fast to notice it wasn't a Warrior.
Part of the improvement this time around came from better Heirloom scaling, as in previous Alpha builds they were not scaling properly as your character leveled up, allowing quest gear surpassing them. Better access to lower level enchants also increased speed and killing power. Although DesMephisto stated that the speed is likely not intended or necessarily indicative of what leveling time will look like when the
Shadowlands
pre-patch finally arrives, as it's to be expected that this part of the game is still very much a work in progress on the Alpha, it's still interesting to see nonetheless; as he related on Reddit, the five and a half hour solo leveling process could probably be reduced down to around 3 hours with a higher level character assisting the leveler with killing mobs and two-person flying mounts.
Most interesting is the tuning appears for
Battle for Azeroth
content still appears to heavily favor the bonuses from Azerite, whereas leveling without them is noticeably harder. However, since those armor slots conflict with Heirlooms, speed players like DesMephisto end up frequently gear swapping to benefit from the experience bonuses before turning in quests. A lot of things are still not yet balanced or even enabled (
Legion
Artifact weapon quest scenarios currently require level 35), while expansion introductory scenarios award abnormally high item level weapons, so it's very likely we'll see significant changes before live.
For those who aren't familiar with him, DesMephisto is a major supporter of autism awareness and the
Autistic Self-Advocacy Network
, which he supports through his love of Warcraft as one of the most prolific "leveling" players in World of Warcraft, having taken 47 characters to max level (all of them Warriors!), achieving multiple speed records, and been a major contributor to
Azeroth Auto Pilot
. While certainly not the only speed leveler in WoW, his dedication to streaming and frequent charity events have garnered a lot of attention on Reddit, Discord, and other online communities, including a recent
interview with PC Gamer
. He also recently attempted inclusion in the Guinness Book of World Records with a
36 hour WoW marathon
, although no official determination has come back yet. As an extreme Warrior-centric player (and personality!), perhaps the most interesting part here is that he leveled a Kul Tiran Druid, a serious departure from his usual Warrior-only policy, though he insists it was just for the sake of charity!
