FR gear and Onyxia Scale Cloak on this fight is very important if you think on taking down Firemaw
As a Rogue, I always tended to go max FR for this fight.
Why? Because the more buffets you can resist, the longer you can stay in and do maximum sustained DPS. I can typically stay in the fight until I get 5 or 6 buffets, and then hide out of line of sight to bandage up. Usually, a Shaman is in my group for the fire resist totem, so I can grab an extra top-off heal from them. After waiting for the debuff to wear off, you can go in again.
A fun fight to execute once it is on farm status, but it's a real pain to learn the first time.
It's important at Firemaw that you don't stay and DPS on him all the time. That was the mistake in my guild when we first went to him. You will get some debuffs increasing fire damage taken. If you have more than 3 debuffs you should hide behind a wall.
It's important your melee DPS avoids the shadow flame as well, shadow flame hits for around 5000 damage even if you wear the cloak.
The positions of tanks and melee DPS can be a bit hard at Firemaw, here is a link to a picture..
Firemaw is the fourth boss in Blackwing Lair, after Broodlord Lashlayer and before Ebonroc. He drops the Tier 2 Epic Set gloves for all classes.
Like the other 2 drakes, Firemaw casts wing buffet and shadowflame. His unique drake ability is Flame Buffet (pronounced buff-it). Firemaw's flame buffet is a stackable and non-dispellable debuff that hits anyone within Firemaw's line of sight. It begins by doing 150 damage. And each tick that you are in LoS of Firemaw the debuff is renewed and stacks another time. Each time it stacks the damage increases by another 150. The Flame Buffet debuff will last for 16 seconds if not renewed. While you are not in the LoS of Firemaw you will not take any damage from Flame Buffet. The Flame Buffet is a Fire effect and can be resisted if you have sufficient fire resistance - it is a binary effect so you will either resist it entirely or take full damage, you will not resist it partially.
Firemaw should be tanked in the entrance to the room he guards, where the Broodlord Lashlayer was stationed. He should not however be pulled
without clearing the first few packs of Mobs in the room, the amount needing to be cleared depending on the skill of the raid, but most likely three.
He should be aggroed so that he is attacking the main tank inside the doorway and can be put out of sight by the raid if they hug the walls either side of him. This is necessary to negate the stack of Flame Buffet that quickly accumulates. One tank should stand in front of him to take aggro for most of the fight being healed from the right side of the room, however during his knockbacks the tank behind him will have to take over, healed by the left side.
DPS should stand, with the majority of the healers, on the right hand side of the room and get out of LoS when stacks reach about 10. Bandaging should be used on non tanks as much as possible as mana will be needed to heal tanks taking more damage from their lessened fire resistance.
As with all the other drakes, Firemaw's most deadly weapon is his shadowflame. In order to reduce the impact that this has it is considered wise to have priests cast a Power Word Shield on the MT just prior to this. Other tactics include having one or two healers using big heals and attempting to time them so they land the second after the shadowflame hits.
As with all BWL fights, it is important to manage aggro heavily here as wing buffet reduces the aggro on the tank who is hit by it. In a perfect kill the MT will never take a buffet and will be able to keep ahead of aggro, however if he does get hit by one aggro can get flighty later in the fight.
As in the next two bosses Ebonroc and Flamegor this tactic is almost the same.. i post it here below as it tend to be straight forward.
This guy is pretty tough for a first time run through.
Alright strat for melee: make sure you have all your FR on, and especially your ONYXIA SCALE CLOAK!!!!!!
Bring heal potions and bandages for close encounters. Whenever you get low on hp make sure you run away and get out of line of sight, then bandage up. Keep coming in while your tank is being healed and sundering aggro. Watch your debuffs because if flame buffet stacks up too much on you, you're likely about to be killed. Keep repeating process until he is dead, enjoy your epics!
Does anyone have any good strategies on how to kill him?
Firemaw is the 4th boss in BWL and the first of the three dragons. They drop the tier 2 gloves (obviously) and all have 1 attack in common: Shadowflame. So make sure your entire raid has Onyxia Scale Cloak equipped when fighting them or you're screwed.
First kill Broodlord (duh) and claer out the room he's in, both floors, to avoid pulls. When Broodlord is dead, they no longer respawn.
Next, pull the adds inside the room with Firemaw flying around. Sheep the engineers, kill the warlocks ASAP. Warlocks can, and should, bamnish the warlock summons if they happen. The Big dragon-dudes that look like Broodlord are VERY resistant to all but one class of magic, which they take twice the normal damage from (casters, crits ahoy!). Once they're cleared, get ready to pull the bugger.
The tanks stand with their backs to the closed gate. ?Healers and ranged stand inside where broodlord was. You'll need MASSIVE fire-resistance here!
Once the pull is accomplished, ensure two tanks get aggro. Healers should stand in an angle where they're not in line-of-sight of Firmaw to avoid his AOE but so they can still heal the tanks. Whenever firemaw is about to do Wing Buffet, the secondary tank taunts him. Firemaw will knock him back ( ALL RANGED move out of Firemaw's LOS when CT_RaidAssist notifies of 3 seconds to Wing Buffet). As soon as he's knocked back, MT taunts to get aggro back.
Ranged needs to do fast DPS (mages use uninterruptable Arcane Missiles), and then move out of line-of-sight due to the stacking fire-dmg debuff. It improves his fire-damage against you, so once you got 4-5 of it stacked, move out of the damage and wait for it to dissappear. bandage up and get abck into the fight.
Do it right and he really ain't all that hard =)
^^ exactly what he said but just to add a thing or 2..onyxia scale cloak will not help you unless ur the main or offtank. It hits for 4-5k hitpoints even with it, so you're gonna get one shotted if the offtank taunts and are dps'ing ranged from the right hand side because he will be facing you, so dps from the left side. Also healers should wear 0 fire resist, if done correctly they'll never get hit.
Pretty fun boss fight, it gets DPS classes ready for Chromaggus, since you have to dodge attacks using LOS for that fight too. (unless you get time lapse)
we just downed Firemaw 1st time tonight and I know that none of the healers and some of the DPS we're not wearing the Ony cloak. We did the LoS tactic too. At 4 stacked whatever move he does is called we had the Melee DPS pull out and bandage/pot and where off their debuffs.
also for onyxia u don't really need onyxia scale cloak as a rogue....never die on onyxia aswell on normal surcomstances
slashslap: are you sure you joined a syncchan with your dmgMeters? Because it relies on the combat log of yours, and that doesnt reach for more than maybe 30yds. This means, you most probably didnt have the real values of the other members of your guild. :)No offence, but that's a common misunderstanding.
"w00t, im new and blue, and i'm the best dpser in this BWL guild even when they're epic dudes from MC/BWL and i've not got a single epic".
Note how stupid it actually sounds.
hmmm atunna first of all i said: high - which means like nr.6-8 i consider that high since i was the weakest geared damage dealer inside....btw i don't have damage meter someone had and told me......
also i dont wanna prank here i just wanted to say that having onyxia scale cloak isnt the only way to survive....
(now do have onyxia scale cloak and it does increase my survivability)
Is Flamegore a similar fight to Firemaw?
out of interest how easy is this with lvl 70's?
can it be done as a group now?
If you can take this guy down, you can take Nefarian down. :)
Time lapse Chromaggus is pretty hard too.
Nefarian is easy, we have taken him lots of times, u only need to try stay out of the dead guys aggro as a healer, and the MT should just stand the right place, since Nef can kick you out of BWL, the only thing that hurts is his Black Fire, wich hits for 6.5k+, and you need to have 410+ Fire resist to have 10% chance to restist it, actually, our MT has 479 Unbuffed, so he has like 800+ buffed;D, we have wiped sometimes on Nef due to our MT has been kicked out of the Balcony, and the healers got Nef's aggro:P
i am still a newby to WoW, and i was wondering, is Firemaw's stats that of a 60 elite but marked level 1, or is this page just misprinted?
Loot from Firemaw Lifetime:
Cloak of Firemaw
Claw of the Black Drake
as a priest this fight is lame and easy :D?
easy as cake
dropped me a staff of shadow wing
2nd staff for our guild:)
it goes Razoregoree,vaelastraz,broodlord,firemaw,flamegor,ebonroc,chromaggus,nef
Level 1 eh? I think I can take him...
actually a lvl 60 elite is nothing compared to this. 60 elites have around 8-10 k hp. This guy has around 900k-1mil hp. He is a lvl 1 Boss. All Bosses are lvl 1.
Primalist's Linked Legguards
Improves your chance to get a critical strike with spells by 2%.
Improves your chance to hi with spells by 1%.
