This information is accurate as of BfA Beta build 27026.
The sethrak are a new snake-like race for
Battle of Azeroth
, taking elements from multiple different snakes including cobras, vipers, and rattlesnakes. They are speculated as the most likely candidate to be paired alongside the
vulpera
for Allied Race distribution and this guide will explain why they are a strong front-runner for that position.
History and Lore
The sethrak lived alongside the Zandalari in
Vol'dun
long before the region turned into a desert. It's unknown how long ago this terraforming took place, but the leaders
Vorrik
and
Korthek
were present during that large event, suggesting that sethrak live for a long time.
The sethrak are a very cultured race, surrounding themselves in luxury when possible. They are also speculated to be an egg-laying race, however it's uncertain if the egg pools are for their sethrak offspring, or if it's specifically for raising their cobra companions.
Inside various larger caves, we can see that the expanse of the underground of Vol'dun is filled with sethrak habitats. We explore an extent of this underground structure during the
Temple of Sethraliss
dungeon, and there is the potential for more exploration in a future patch.
One important thing to note is that there are two factions of sethrak: the Faithless, and the Devoted.
The Faithless
are ruled over by
Emperor Korthek
, and are considered evil to both Horde and Alliance.
The Devoted
are led by
Vorrik
, and while they interact similarly (the same basic quests) with both the Alliance and the Horde, the Alliance give their direct support to the Devoted, while the Horde are helping more as a consequence of helping the vulpera. The Alliance also do not currently interact with the vulpera during their questline. However, the Horde currently have more quests with the Sethrak as the quest line involving Emperor Korthek and the keystones of Atul'aman is seen to its conclusion as part of the Horde's experience with Vol'dun.
So, while there are fewer signs for the sethrak being an Allied Race than the
vulpera
, there is still plenty to discuss and speculate about, with many subtle things pointing to the fact that sethrak may be the most valid option.
Sethrak's Model
The Animations
While the sethrak's model is not a player model, it does show a high level of polish beyond many other original models. It's clear that there has been a large amount of personality and care injected into their designs.
As a ground up model, all of their animations are unique, though some may have been edited from the female worgen's animations, such as Walk. Within each animation, the tails are fully animated, and very well done. They have fewer facial bones than other bipedal races, but due to their long necks, they still manage to be very expressive.
ArtOffLoopMost noteworthy, however, is a recent addition to their animation list. The sethrak have received no animation updates since very early on, up until around the b.26500's where EmoteEat was added alongside
"ArtOffLoop"
.
ArtOffLoop's primary use is as a player-specific animation used when interacting with the
艾泽拉斯之心
at certain points of the game. While there could be a cinematic use for the sethrak to have ArtOffLoop that has yet to be discovered, on the surface this is
a very strange thing
. It even has a
tongue-flick version
in addition to the normal version, though one of the known uses for this animation has subsequently been changed to use a mixed version of the animation that combines ChannelCastDirected and ArtOffLoop rather than using ArtOffLoop explicitly.
The ArtOffLoop animation for sethrak.
A sethrak utilizing the ArtOffLoop animation during the Heart of Azeroth quest.
Player Capes and Tabards
Also, in build 26567, geosets for tabards and capes were added. Both of these additions are bizarre for different reasons. With tabards, there's supposedly no way to have them properly function without changing their texture to a player texture or reworking it entirely. This is especially true for the top half, that relies on a certain type of geoset for the chest. With capes, the sethrak already have a cape as part of their creature armor, making it a seemingly redundant addition. These two additions could be related to a conversion to player model, or they could have been attempting to introduce a way to distinguish between the Devoted and the Faithless which was then scrapped.
In the following build, the playercape geoset was removed. In the build following that, the tabard geosets were removed. The game files still have 'humanmalecapeskin.blp' in the Sethrak_Melee folder.
Playing with the cape and tabard geosets.
The Female Model
One interesting thing to note is the current lack of a standard female model. While the basic NPCs lack a female model, the
Avatar of Sethraliss
model is
distinctly female
. Sethraliss did not have her animations hooked up until many builds after the model was first included. Among the differences in her model are thinner arms, wider hips, a higher set chest, a unique skin color, eyelashes, horns, and spikes.
Front Comparison: Sethraliss is the light orange wireframe, and a standard sethrak is the dark orange wireframe.
Side Comparison: The colors are reversed here, standard sethrak as the light orange and Sethraliss as the dark orange.
It's also worth noting that, like regular sethrak, Sethraliss can have all of her geosets removed. This is a requirement for models that players can use, and other races that are sometimes suggested as Allied Races, such as Quillboar or Tortollan, cannot have this process done to their current models.
Recent builds have also brought female voiceovers, both for the Faithless and for the Devoted. It's expected we will see a female model added for general sethrak before too much longer, as the standard sethrak model has a fairly masculine feel to it.
Whether they add a unique female model or not by the time the beta ends will be very telling as to whether or not Blizzard has plans to make the sethrak an Allied Race, but a lack of its inclusion does not prohibit the ability for them to add it later on, as the only important female sethrak is Sethraliss. The requirements of adding a female creature model based on Sethraliss consist only of a retexturing of the skin for variety, as well as some female inspired creature outfit geoset collections and textures.
The Helmet Conundrum
When people suggest that sethrak could be an Allied Race, the number one remark made is that helmets wouldn't fit them. The truth is that this isn't as big of a deal as people would think.
Additionally, the same person also created an
image album
with even more analysis on how helmets would work with the sethrak. It's highly recommended to browse the album and annotations for additional reading.
Aside from the fact that other beast races also struggle with helmets, they're essentially worgen with really long necks. It should be
more than possible
to have sethrak wear helmets, and have it look acceptable for most helmet designs without an exorbitant amount of work. Similarly worth noting is that the Kul Tirans, the Zandalari, and the
vulpera
also need all of their helmets reseated for their models as well. In fact, all races have helmets semi-manually set for them. An advantage of the vulpera and sethrak is the fact that they use only one head shape between their male and female versions.
Potential for Alliance Faction
Currently, the sethrak are being utilized similarly to the Nightborne, with no heavy bias towards either faction. However, the quests are not identical between the two factions. There's some subtle differences that are worth mentioning, which indicate a slight Alliance bias.

In the Alliance version, you rescue Vorrik, rather than rescuing Serrik. Vorrik also hides his key directly with the Alliance, while Sulthis' keystone was simply found at a ruin. The Alliance commander also seems enthusiastic about working with the sethrak:
"you did well in befriending the local population. This likely won't be the last time we'll have to depend upon them."
Unfortunately, the second half of the Alliance war campaign for Vol'dun does not involve the sethrak. So far however, the Alliance has not come across a single
vulpera
as part of their main questline.
Just
Faithless and Devoted sethrak.
The Timeline
With a recent removal of a bug involving Sulthis' Keystone incorrectly being on the altar for the Alliance version of quests, the following is the summary of the events that take place in
Vol'dun
, cementing
Vorrik's
initial debt and faction experience as Alliance-comes-first:
First, Alliance rescues and heals Vorrik, then returns
Vorrik's Keystone
to the temple. The Alliance leave to report back. Then Vorrik gets captured in another skirmish at the Temple, but his key remains safe. During this time, Horde heals
Serrik
, and locates
Sulthis' Keystone
. When they return it and rescue Vorrik, the second keystone is stored in the temple. Following that, Vorrik leaves the temple to assault and kill
Korthek
, leaving behind his new Horde friends to help guard. They fail, the two Keystones are taken along with the Horde NPCs, Serrik is slain, and then
Mythrax
is summoned. Because of this timeline, the Devoted could potentially resent the Horde's failure to help prevent this outcome, and the Alliance could step in to provide aid in restoring the Devoted faction to power.
The Future
It's likely that if the sethrak are planned to be an Allied Race, it will happen either similarly to the Nightborne, or more likely be part of some extended content later in the expansion. The current time table for the vulpera indicates 8.2, so it's likely that the sethrak will not be seen in playable capacity until closer to then. As an example of the type of content that could lead to the sethrak being playable, there's currently a set of datamined broadcast texts for the vulpera that are unused in the beta where the Horde is helping
Kiro
to learn shamanism.
There is also an indication of a substantial underground population of sethrak in Vol'dun, as well as the plot point that without Emperor Korthek, the Faithless now lack any leadership and Vorrik may attempt to bring peace to his people. An act that the vulpera may have difficulty in coming to terms with, instead opting to slay as many dirty Faithless as possible rather than approach the concept of peace.
The Patterns
There are other reasons that it's suspected the sethrak will befriend the Alliance if made an Allied Race. Specifically, they are a good choice for thematic duality with the vulpera. Both are brand new races we've never met before. Both give to their faction something that is lacking. And both have some degree of origination with the racial pairing of goblin/worgen.
Expanding on the last point, one current prevailing theory of Allied Races at this time is the fact that every existing race (potentially excluding the Pandaren) will have a similar Allied Race paired with it. This has, thus far, remained a truth. The only remaining races yet to receive a pairing are the goblin, the worgen, the gnomes, and the undead. The goblins' pairing is fairly obvious: the vulpera. For the undead, people are looking at the recent activity of the San'Layn as a potential option. For gnomes, we have mysterious happenings to gnomes in Kul Tiras, and datamined indications of something called 'Junker Gnomes'. And then the last race, worgen, still needs a pairing. The obvious choice here is the race that has visual similarities to worgen, mild thematic similarities, and is currently available in a state that indicates intent of playability. This would be the sethrak.
Diverging from that, there is one other theory that results from those visual similarities. There may be some truth that the work done with the vulpera and with the sethrak can translate back into the goblin and worgen for future model updates. This means that the work done with these two races results in some additional time saved towards the touted visual update for the two Cataclysm races.
No matter which theory you subscribe to, only time will tell if the sethrak will indeed be an Allied Race.
Allied Race Footnotes
Racial Mount
Sethrak are seen in-game favoring Krolusk mounts. With a whopping 9 varieties in the files, and the fact that one does not drop in the Temple of Sethraliss dungeon, there's a strong potential that it will end up tied to some future sethrak related content. Currently, one comes from World PvP, and the other comes from the Mythic Dungeon meta achievement.
While krolusks are occasionally seen other places, it's stated that the sethrak heavily utilize these creatures for both mounts and more, and they are very prevalent in the deserts of Vol'dun.
Wowhead's Krolusk mount preview
Potential Classes
There is still relatively little known about the sethrak and their connection to the ways of life people call 'classes', but they have been seen using abilities relevant to the following classes:
萨满祭司
(Elemental: Lightning)
猎人
战士
牧师
Other classes may be possible, but those are the more obvious choices based on the information we have currently. Fans would also like to see them be Druids to increase the number of races able to be Druid on the Alliance side.
Customization
While the models lack any complex customization due to being NPC models, they do have a range of skin colors available to them: green, black, white, 'dust', and 'diamondback'. These can all be seen within the opening examples of Animations. They are also able to have all creature armor removed and still have a fully functioning model, which is not typically seen with NPC enemies.
Sethraliss
herself also poses an example of what potential customization could be, with the spikes and horns she has on her body.
Additionally, PomPup took some time to create a fan representation of what sort of customization could potentially be given to the sethrak, if they become an Allied Race.

I really hope they do become playable, for both alliance and horde. However.. blizzard wants to KILL fun more than encourage it so I'm not holding my breath.

The Sethrak are honestly what I'm most excited about it for BfA. And WoW is long overdue for a playable reptilian race. So if they don't become playable, I'll be extremely disappointed. But if they do, praise Sethraliss! :3

I really really really hope they do become an allied race, and gank every vulpera on sight with one (if they become an opposing allied race, which I hope not). While using a zandalari druid to attack every worgen on sight.

As told even in this section. Vulpera and Sethrak are a couple similar to Void Elf and Nightborn. Void elves were given to the alliance with the intention to provide the blood elf animation to that faction. Same speaking of the nightborns that are now providing the Night elf model to the horde. Is not casual that the Sethrak and the Vulpera use parts of, respectively, female worgens and goblins. logic imposes a reflection about. Only one couple of allied races has been introduced for a "animation swap" between factions (Void elf/Nightborn) and they were both "never-seen-before" new races with animations of older races. then we had 2 coules of "reskin races" that uses the same model and animations of old races of their same faction (Lightforged-Dark Iron/Highmountain-Mag'har). Then we will get two subraces based on old races by lore and with new models and gameplay (Kultiran and Zandalari). If we speculate that after them we will get the sethrak and the vulpera then we will have two "never-seen-before" new races with animations of older races, exactly like Void Elves and Nightborns, this fact alone makes me sure 100% that the Sethrak will be given to the horde and the vulpera will be given to the alliance for an "animation swap".

Small info update, as of 8.1 PTR:
Currently the Devoted (Vorrik's faction) still have not been involved in the war for either side. However, vulpera are taking a more active involvement in assisting the Horde and this could lead to some sort of spark between the two races. Additional theories for drama include Vorrik attempting to unite his people and restore the faith to the Faithless further down the line.
Additional weirdness includes the fact that for the launch of 8.0.1, the sethrak were resized from Tauren-Size to being Worgen-Size. This further contributes to the weird 'why did you do that if we can't play as them?' decisions, such as player cape and tabard or the Heart of Azeroth animation.
One weird thing on the PTR is an NPC called the "Captive Sethrak" which appears to be a Devoted sethrak, however we have not yet found the source, and again, the Devoted are currently not involved in the quests we've observed thus far. So while there are no new hints really since launch that place the sethrak as potential future allies, the existing hints still apply, and nothing thus-far has deconfirmed them allying with either faction.
It is a prevailing theory that if the Horde recruits the vulpera, the Alliance will be forced to seek additional allies of their own, particularly in befriending the sethrak. Also keep in mind that the sethrak are a very old race, Vorrik himself being as old as Velen or Tyrande (~10-15k) as he was alive when Sethraliss fought Mythrax.
Also, we have confirmation that the sethrak are not related to the trolls, and while Sethraliss was worshiped at a time by both the Zandalari and the sethrak, with her long absence after the desertification of Vol'dun, that has fallen out of favor. So at this time, we are unsure of the diplomatic relations between the sethrak as a whole and the Zandalari faction.

I do think that Sethrak will be going Horde, because the Devoted seem to have a good reputation with the Zandalari, who the Horde are seeking to add to their ranks.

I do think that they will go Horde, because lorewise it is the Horde that go into Uldir and kill Mythrax, so I do think that the Devoted will be very thankful and join the Horde.

Because of this timeline, the Devoted could potentially resent the Horde's failure to help prevent this outcome, and the Alliance could step in to provide aid in restoring the Devoted faction to power.
This is wrong, since when you do the quests, Vorrik insists that he blames himself for Serrik's death, citing that it was his duty to guard the stone, not Serrik (and therefore not the Horde's fault.)
Besides, at least the Horde tried. What did the Alliance do? Chill at their base.
The Horde heals Serrik, rescues Vorrik, attempts to prevent the stones being taken/used, and later kill Mythrax in Uldir.
The Alliance heals Vorrik and returns a stone to the temple.
It's likely Blizzard was doing the War campaign for the Alliance and when they got to Voldun, they decided not to reinvent the wheel, and just gave them a taste of the Horde storyline since it was already done and easy to convert into an alliance version (Vorrik talking to the Alliance on the flight to the Temple of the Devoted is the exact same voiceover as Serrik talking to the Horde player on their flight to the Temple).

I want to make an Alliance Sethrak and a horde Vulpera. I have not grinded for any of the allied races, legion/bfa mounts, or even exalted with Campions of Azeroth. However, I wouldn't mind grinding for these races. I like the idea of having a buy guy Alliance race and a cute little horde race. The Vulpera reminds me of blood elves because they are aesthetically appealing. The Sethrak are the bad guys. I would like to be an Alliance bad guy for a change. I main Worgen Warrior and Blood Elf Paladin. These would give me a reason to stray from the "WoW... monotony." I'm a warewolf fan and I'm not ashamed of it, but let's face it the animal lovers have to compromise with aesthetically unappealing races in Tauren and Worgen. The Sethrak and Vulpera would be a site for sore eyes. There would not be enough to grind out for a second canine race on alliance side. I hope that isn't what they do. I can't see myself choosing Sethrak over blood elf. They aren't as aesthetically appealing as blood elf, but they are definitely more appealing than a Worgen. My Worgen's named Manatoshi. My main would loose his manhood by going full beast.

I doubt they will, like Saurok and Naga. It's another scaly friend they will no doubt not let us play with.
But I'm a pessimist. I would main Sethrak. I'd have to contact Wowhead and have my name changed to TamiayTheSethrak. Love these things, they look awesome!

I don't know why, but my brain is making the connection of Sethrak faces and head shape to Night Furies (and for the female Sethrak, Light Furies) from How To Train Your Dragon. I don't think it's too much of a stretch either. They're both reptiles, similar skin texture, their mouths and eyes are in similar positions, and if horns/fins were customisable options, it could be alike them too. Anyone else think so?
