Shadowlands, the upcoming World of Warcraft expansion that will follow on from Battle for Azeroth, will introduce players to many new systems as would be expected of a brand new expansion. Every class has individual changes and the core systems of Shadowlands will affect the way every class plays as a whole. This is an overview of what those changes are and what they will mean to classes.

Classes in Shadowlands
Classes in World of Warcraft have always been a core part of the player experience and identity. Talent Specializations (specs) within each class allow each player to play their class in a way that suits them. In Mists of Pandaria, players of each class were required to choose a spec and could access talents restricted to that spec as part of the evolving class design philosophy. Warlords of Draenor saw many abilities pruned from classes, reducing the number of buttons that a player needed to play effectively. Legion saw a further evolution in this philosophy around class design. To support the Artifact Weapon, a core system for that expansion which saw each specialization of each class focus around a powerful weapon, specializations became the defining aspects of the class. While the Artifact Weapon system was unique to Legion, replaced by the Heart of Azeroth system for Battle for Azeroth, Battle for Azeroth inherited this spec over class design philosophy. With the advent of Shadowlands, the class design philosophy is changing once again, with the class returning to its status as the primary identity.

The Level Squish
A Level squish means that all of our important numbers will be changing. Expect to see a change, not only to your Level, but also to Stats and Item Levels.
For more information about the Level Squish, check out our guide:
The Level Squish
Global Class Changes
While each class has seen individual changes to abilities and specs, there are also a few global conceptual changes that will affect our interactions with the game world and each other.
Most non-periodic damage and healing abilities will now have a 5% variance on each individual use.
Healing received debuffs have been doubled in PvE while they remain the same in PvP. Examples include
致死之伤
for Warriors, Hunters and, Monks (50%/25%),
致伤药膏
for Rogues (8%/4% per stack), and
致死顺劈
and
军团打击
for Warlocks (20%/10%).
Group buffs,
真言术:韧
,
奥术智慧
, and
战斗怒吼
, have been halved to now grant 5% of their respective stats to party members.
The Unpruning of Abilities in Shadowlands
Announced at BlizzCon in 2019, unpruning, a core component of Shadowlands class design, will bring back many abilities to the base classes. These are abilities that had been relegated to specific specializations or removed entirely. Once again, spec choices will supplement the core class rather than restrict it. Click below for a quick summary of the spells and abilities that are returning as baseline for each class and will be usable by all specs within that class.
The Unpruning
Global Cooldown Changes for Abilities in Shadowlands
Blizzard has implemented a GCD to control the flow of spells and allow "epic" abilities "a moment" in which to be...well, epic. Recently they have conceded that for many “burst cooldowns,” all that the GCD does is hinder a smooth rotation. To counter this, in some cases they have added additional effect (eg.
剑刃乱舞
or
升腾
), and in others, the functionality has been rolled into another ability (eg. Unholy Frenzy). Still more abilities are proving to be an issue, and for these Blizzard is removing them from the GCD.
GCD Changes
Talent Changes in Shadowlands
As you might expect, between the change in class design philosophy and another large change coming in Shadowlands, the level squish, talents are seeing some updates. Talents are now available at levels 15, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, and 50. For specifics on the talents for each class as we know them at this time, check out our updated Talent Calculator:

Area of Effect Damage Changes in Shadowlands
Area of Effect (AoE) Damage is seeing a change to its basic philosophy. Currently in Battle for Azeroth, players can pull huge numbers of mobs with AoE abilities that will do damage to all of them. While this is rather efficient for players, Blizzard would like to see a return to a more strategic paradigm. Target caps are being introduced to AoE abilities. The most lenient caps are to tank abilities for obvious instanced content reasons; tanks need to be able to hold threat to do their jobs. DPS players will notice that different abilities have different target caps applied. This allows for a range of situational ability uses. A 2 or 3 target cap on an ability would see a much different intended use for that ability than, for example, an ability with a cap of 5, 8, or 10. Players can expect to see multiple abilities in their toolkits with different AoE target caps.

Shadowlands Core Systems
In Legion we had Class Halls and Artifact Weapons, in Battle for Azeroth we had the Heart of Azeroth and Azerite Armor. Shadowlands is coming with a whole new set of Core Systems including Covenants, Soulbinds, and new Legendaries, as well as a new type of dungeon, Torghast which has special Class Powers, Anima Powers that will have you playing your class in new, fun ways.
Shadowlands Covenants
One of the core systems in Shadowlands is Covenants. Players will choose one of four different Covenants for their character to ally with, Necrolord, Kyrian, Venthyr, or Night Fae. Their chosen Covenant will grant various perks and rewards to a character as well as a Covenant Signature Ability granted to all members of a Covenant, and a Covenant Class Ability, granted to all members of a Covenant of a specific Class. Many of these abilities are still works in progress, with some having already been announced by Blizzard, while others have been datamined and may or may not bear any resemblance to their final versions.
While Blizzard seems to intend that players choose their character's Covenant based on aesthetics and philosophy, concern has been voiced about players feeling that they need to choose a Covenant based on the performance of the Covenant Signature and Class abilities. There is also concern that a player may be unduly punished for choosing the "wrong" Covenant and deciding to change. Blizzard has reassured players that changing Covenants is not hard, the difficulty will come when a character wants to rejoin a Covenant that they had previously left. The concern about the relative power of Covenant Signature and Class abilities remains. For more details on Covenants, and Covenant abilities and aesthetics, check out our guides.

Covenant Soulbinds in Shadowlands
Besides Covenant abilities, one of the reasons that a player may pick a particular Covenant for their character is Soulbinds. Each Covenant offers a selection of NPCs with whom a character may Soulbind. Once a character is Soulbound to an NPC they have access to several useful abilities associated specifically with that NPC:
Covenant Signature Ability Augment Trait:
This is an inherent trait that you receive when you Soulbind with your selected NPC. It is designed to augment the Covenant Signature Ability.
Damage and Utility Traits:
Active and passive abilities that provide damage and combat enhancements and added utility.
Conduits:
A progression interface system where traits can be earned and selected, and various augments (throughput, survival, and utility) can be socketed. Conduits will be spec specific and can be changed for a nominal fee.
The Conduit system is very reminiscent of the Artifact Weapon interface in Legion. Sockets will be purchased with a new resource, Anima. Much like Artifact Power and Azerite, Anima will be acquired as players adventure through the expansion. When asked whether or not Anima would be the "grind" of Shadowlands, Blizzard responded that there is no infinite grind system in Shadowlands.

Torghast and Anima Powers
Torghast, Tower of the Damned is a new replayable endgame instanced feature in Shadowlands. Once a player is inside Torghast, they can gain access to Anima Powers. These temporary skills will affect how players interact with Torghast. Like Covenant Abilities, there are both General and Class Specific Anima Powers. For a summary of the General Anima Powers that have been datamined so far and for more information about Torghast and how Anima Powers work, check out our overviews.

Legendary Items in Shadowlands
What expansion would be complete without Legendary items? Shadowlands introduces crafted Legendaries. Using the Forge of Domination and materials gathered from Torghast, players will be able to craft custom legendary items to suit their needs. We don't know a great deal about the system yet, but it promises to be the next evolution of the punchcard trinket in Mechagon. Players will apparently be able to craft the armor piece of their choices and attach abilities to it. We will report further details as we learn more.

I have one question regarding the level squish - How will it impact running old content? Right now my 120 can power through Legion Mythics solo, will my 50/60 (post squish) be able to do the same?

Just a thing I noticed: Pretty much all Class pages have at least 1 alliance representing them, but some don't have ANY horde. I know you guys like Alliance so much but I think there should be a middle ground here, or, on some classes put the most iconic characters (like Horde shamans and Alliance Paladins, for example). But I'd prefer a middle ground, time to refresh the Class arts with one of each at the cover of the pages, why not attacking each other heh?
Like, for example in the Monk page you have that 'human' mainly for that class, only recently I began to see the pandaren one too. Warlock one has a Worgen + Gnome (2x Alliance).

Hmmmm, maybe the combat in the game would be more strategic and people wouldn't pull so many mobs if Blizz didn't oversaturate every square meter of the game with enemies? You can't ever enjoy the game world if you can't walk two feet without a mob aggroing. There Blizz goes, "fixing" something that was their fault in the first place.

Has playing multiple specs been addressed with covenants? For example, druids have 4 specs and a lot of players play multiple specs, the class abilities for one covenant may be suitable for one spec but not all. Do you change covenants when you change spec or will blizzard allow a covenant for each spec?

Created spreadsheet to show what choices the different races and classes have when you create a new character in Shadowlands, based on BETA v9.0.1
Tried exporting my Excel to Markdown.
First attempt with some cleanup:
https://github.com/headshawt73/WoWinfo/blob/master/Shadowlands_NewChars
TL;DR summary
Original races, most classes except DK, start at level 1 and have choice: old starting area or Exile's Reach
Pandaren, all classes except DK, start at level 1 and have choice: individual original starting area or Exile's Reach
Deathknights (100% any and all races) start at level 8 at Archerus: The Ebon Hold
Demon Hunters (still just NElf and BElf) start at level 8 at Mardum, the Shattered Abyss
New Allied races start at level 10 at their individual original starting area

they need to make unholy assault and epidemic baseline, the kit feels incomplete without them a especially after the changes to both abilites for shadowlands, put something else competitive in those rows that will bring flavor and let us pick something besides them, otherwise those rows are dead and those two talents will always be taken, much like they are right now in bfa.

Wouldn't it be sweet if they made it so Void elves and Nighborne could be demon hunters? O_O
