Abilities Earned While Leveling from 50 to 60 in Shadowlands
The Level Squish necessitated a reassigning of the Levels at which each Ability is learned. Inevitably some of those fell beyond the maximum Level for Battle for Azeroth. These are the Abilities that Mages will gain access to as they level through Shadowlands.

Blizzard's Mage Patch Notes
Blizzard has released Patch Notes including the class changes for Shadowlands. The following is the class change summary for Mages.
Classes: Mage
General
Mirror Image is no longer a Talent and is learned by all Mages at level 44. Mirror Images damage greatly reduced, Frostbolt added to all Mirror Images, and while your images are active, damage taken is reduced by 20%. Taking direct damage will cause one of your images to dissipate.
All Mages can now use the following abilities:
Arcane Explosion – Causes an explosion of magic around the caster, dealing Arcane damage to all enemies within 10 yards.
Frostbolt – Launches a bolt of frost at the enemy, causing Frost damage and slowing movement speed by 50% for 8 seconds.
Fire Blast – Blasts the enemy for Fire damage.
The following Talents have been adjusted:
New Talent: Focus Magic – Increases the target's chance to critically hit with spells by 5% for 30 minutes. When the target critically hits, your chance to critically hit with spells is increased by 5% for 10 seconds. Cannot be cast on self. Limit 1 target.
Shimmer cooldown increased to 25 seconds (was 20 seconds).
Rune of Power now places a Rune of Power on the ground for 15 seconds (was 10 seconds) and has an additional effect – Casting Arcane Power, Combustion or Icy Veins will also create a Rune of Power at your location.
Ring of Frost incapacitate duration in PvE increased by 50% and has an additional effect – When the incapacitate expires, enemies are slowed by 65% for 4 seconds.
Arcane
New Ability: Alter Time – Alters the fabric of time, returning you to your current location and health when cast a second time, or after 10 seconds. Effect negated by long distance or death.
Mastery: Savant now has an additional effect – Increases all other Arcane damage.
Clearcasting now has additional effects – Stacks up to 3 times and causes your Arcane Missiles to fire 1 additional missile.
Arcane Power cooldown reduced to 2 minutes (was 3 minutes).
Touch of the Magi is no longer a Talent and is learned by all Arcane Mages at level 33. Touch of the Magi has been redesigned – Applies Touch of the Magi to your current target, accumulating 25% of the damage you deal to the target for 8 seconds, and then exploding for that amount of Arcane damage to the target and reduced damage to all nearby enemies. Generates 4 Arcane Charges on cast and has a 45 second cooldown.
Arcane Power no longer has a global cooldown.
The following Talents have been adjusted:
New Talent: Master of Time (replaces Mana Shield) – Reduces the cooldown of Alter Time by 30 seconds. Alter Time resets the cooldown of Blink when you return to your original location.
New Talent: Arcane Echo (replaces Charged Up) – Direct damage you deal to enemies affected by Touch of the Magi, causes an explosion that deals Arcane damage to 8 nearby enemies.
Amplification causes Arcane Missiles to fire 2 additional missiles when Clearcast (was 1).
Resonance damage per target hit with Arcane Barrage increased to 15% (was 10%).
Time Anomaly now grants Time Warp for 6 seconds and no longer grants 4 Arcane Charges.
Nether Tempest now deals reduced damage on secondary targets.
PvP Talent changes:
Rewind Time has been removed.
Fire
Mastery: Ignite now causes your Phoenix Flames to spread your Ignites to 8 nearby enemies Ignite no longer spreads to a nearby enemy every 2 seconds.
Phoenix Flames is no longer a Talent and is learned by all Fire Mages at level 19. Now Phoenix Flames has a 25 second recharge time (was 30 seconds), damage increased by 15%, and no longer guarantees a critical strike.
Enhanced Pyrotechnics is now Fireball (Rank 2).
Phoenix Flames now deals reduced damage on secondary targets.
The following Talents have been adjusted:
New Talent: From the Ashes (Passive) – Increases Mastery by 2% for each charge of Phoenix Flames off cooldown and your direct-damage critical strikes reduce its cooldown by 1 second.
Blast Wave damage increased by 5% and duration increased to 6 seconds (was 4 seconds).
Alextrasza's Fury now always critically strikes for 50% increased critical strike damage and has an additional effect – Damage done by your next Pyroblast or Flamestrike is increased by 35%.
Kindling now reduces the remaining cooldown on Combustion by 1.5 seconds (was 1 second).
Pyroclasm now increases Pyroblast bonus damage by 250% (was 225%).
Living Bomb now deals reduced damage on secondary targets.
Frost
Flurry now reduces the target's movement speed by 80% (was 70%).
Icy Veins no longer has a global cooldown.
Frozen Orb now capped at 8 targets.
The following Talents have been adjusted.
Frigid Winds additional movement speed reduction is now 10% (was 15%).
Ice Nova now deals reduced damage on secondary targets.
Mage Class Change Highlights
All Mage specs are receiving the following abilities:
Baseline Abilities
: Arcane Explosion, Fireblast, Frostbolt, Mirror Image, Fire Ward, Frost Ward
Alter Time
Reworked - When cast, this spell gives the Mage the ability to return to their initial location, with the same health and mana, after casting it a second time or after a short duration.
Focus Magic (Talent)
: Focus Magic grants an ally a slight bonus to their spell critical hit chance; in addition, when the ally critically hits with a spell, the Arcane Mage receives the same boon for a short period of time.

The target becomes a Living Bomb, taking (24% of Spell power) Fire damage over 4 sec, and then exploding to deal an additional (14% of Spell power) Fire damage to the target and reduced damage to all other enemies within 10 yards.
Other enemies hit by this explosion also become a Living Bomb, but this effect cannot spread further.

Creates 3 copies of you nearby for 40 sec, which cast spells and attack your enemies.
While your images are active damage taken is reduced by 20%, taking direct damage will cause one of your images to dissipate.

Places a Nether Tempest on the target which deals (17.061% of Spell power) Arcane damage over 12 sec to the target and to allnearby enemies within 10 yards. Limit 1 target. Deals reduced damage to secondary targets.
Damage increased by 60% per Arcane Charge.

Mage Talent Changes for Shadowlands

Increases the target's chance to critically hit with spells by 5% for 30 min. When the target critically hits your Intellect and chance to critically hit with spells is increased by 5% for 10 sec. Cannot be cast on self. Limit 1 target.

Summons a Ring of Frost for 10 sec at the target location. Enemies entering the ring are incapacitated for 10 sec. Limit 10 targets. When the incapacitate expires, enemies are slowed by 65% for 4 sec.

Arcane
: Casting Arcane Power will also create a Rune of Power at your location.

Clearcasting
has an additional stack.
Mastery: Savant
now extends its damage-increasing properties beyond Arcane Blast and Barrage to all spells.
Touch of the Magi
: is now baseline.
Enlightened
: While the Arcane Mage’s mana is above a certain threshold, it empowers all Arcane damage dealt by a moderate amount; when below that threshold, it significantly increases mana regeneration.

Flurry’s Winter’s Chill
Winter’s Chill is now a much longer debuff that causes Frost Mages’ next two spells to treat the target as frozen, a debuff that increases the critical hit chance from the Frost Mage and their allies against the target.

Hello Mages. In this week's build, we've made many changes to Arcane as well as a few updates to the other specs to address recent concerns about talents and GCD usage.
General Mage Changes

Developers' notes: The goal is to push

away from a DPS cooldown and give it a defensive component. Now, only taking direct damage will cause an image to dissipate and there is an ICD of 2 seconds to ensure at least a 6 second uptime when taking damage.

very frequently, we've seen feedback that this creates a lot of tension and still makes it difficult to control when you and don't want Ignite to spread.
In the next alpha build, we're going to try letting

fill this role, as a baseline spell for Fire Mages. This gives

a unique function and identity as a core spell, as well as allowing for more choice over when to spread

. If we continue with the change, we'll look into a new talent to replace

in upcoming builds.

Seems like they're making Arcane more powerful overall, great i guess, but less fun with the removal of Displacement. I love that ability and what it does for the feel of the class. The fun thing about Arcane, especially in PvP is the incredible maneuverability of the Arcane Mage. I might have to respec if this change stays.

This seems like arcane is getting the proc gameplay frost and fire currently has. Seems like they want Arcane Mage to use Arcane Missiles on those Clearcasting procs at all times, and with Arcane Barrage change to return some mana depending on charges you can see they are focusing on having a more defined way of playing Arcane Mage rather than just spamming Arcane Blast 90% of the time.
Given they doubled the CD of arcane power then that means they are moving this spec into more consistent damage and less reliant on cooldown window, that's a nice change and will make the spec different than how Fire is now. Currently Fire and Arcane specs are pretty much the same in terms of gameplay mentality, just Arcane has only 1 button instead of 2 during the cooldown window.

Why would you remove 1 stack of glimmer on top of getting ridding of displacement while melees receiving no similar gutting to their movement abilities, mages will basically turn into turret style warlocks instead of blinking around and actually having fun. Trash changes and pruning abilities for no reason once again, we'll probably get them back next expansion and be presented as new content like touch of the magi.

With this change to "Shimmer", how does it now differ from "Blink"? The most significant difference between Shimmer and Blink had been that Shimmer gave you 2 of them. Take that extra one away from Shimmer, and add no new capabilities to compensate for this, haven't you just made another Blink?

"The Great Class Unpruning," huh? Mage seems to be losing more than it's gaining. How can we even make use of fireblast, arcane explosion, and frostbolt without specialization passive support? Where is Frostfire Bolt?

Just give arcane 3 stacks of missles and no range for displacement like it was in legion. No needed, imho burst change and alter time if we have pvp timewarp+ displacement

I really feel like changing classes after this. Losing one stack of Shimmer, plus Displacement being removed as well? Why? Altered Time doesn't add enough to justify both of those changes. Altered Time is too clunky, just puts you back to where you were which in PvP can be predicted easily and at the same time making it hard to reposition during heavy movement fights. At least reduce the recharge time of Shimmer from 20 sec to 15 sec to match blink as of right now, the only difference is blink removes CCs while shimmer is castable while moving. The recharge should be 15 sec now to match blink if your going to remove a charge of it.

When they say "only taking direct damage" with Mirror Image active will remove a mirror image, I hope they mean that health for mirror images will be completely gone and they'll be immune, distracting enemies for you.
I will miss the attack component of it, but arcane mages really need more defensive abilities. The only real drawback to this, though, is that now Mirror Image is a tad bit useless in solo content when you're trying to weaken an enemy down. I highly doubt they're going to keep the threat generation the same. Especially since, if they're immune to damage, enemies will ignore them as they usually do with, say, a paladin in a bubble that can't taunt.
I don't know, I'm not completely for it, but we'll see how it works in practice. I know the game can't stay the same, but I feel like they're actively making classes worse in ways that would only annoy me.

Blizzard, if you read this. For the love of God revvamp Blast Wave. It is really really bad, can not under any circumstances compete with shimmer (not even on the same planet). Blast wave knock back should be longer, it should damage more (and contribute to Hot Streaks if it crits), and it most definetly should be a base line abillity for fire mages.
