If you want something done right, do it yourself. Or try to, at least. Sometimes a lot before you get it right. Wether you don't need a group or seek challenge, there have been players choosing to delve in dungeons and raids alone since the very beginning of WoW. It was May 2005 when a paladin decided to
solo a 40-man raid boss
. Ever since, many have followed. I am Durendil, and in this guide I will be explaining the principles of soloing and why it is awesome.
This guide hasn't been updated for BFA yet, but it mostly contains generalities and concepts. Specific examples and numbers may have changed.
Soloing as a concept
What is Soloing?
The most general definition of soloing is defeating content designed or intended for several players on your own. This can encompass quests, achievements, dungeons and raids. Anything done by a single character without outside assistance can be called soloing. In the World of Warcraft community however soloing usually means either casual soloing or extreme soloing.
Casual soloing
Casual soloing is soloing lowly challenging content. It can consist of achievements, mounts and transmogrification on past expansion bosses, or an even a single elite monster. Mostly seen by those who solo for profit and a little fun. Soloing is part of this category if most of the following conditions are met:
there is little preparation needed and few adaptations to talents or gear
the chance of dying or failure is low
the soloer is really overgeared
the number of tries required is small - it shouldn't take more than a few hours
An example is farming
决战奥格瑞玛
for
库卡隆战蝎
. If you have no idea what you're doing it can be hard, but by reading a simple guide anyone with easily attainable gear should be able to farm it.
Since casual soloing is already subject to many guides, the later sections will mostly focus on extreme soloing.
Extreme soloing
The simplest way to define extreme soloing is soloing, but hard. Extreme soloers display mastery of their class and the ability to adapt their gameplay to the enemy. The challenges they face require careful preparation and leave little room for error. The difference with casual soloing is the difficulty, which increases the requirements on the character and the player. For example, soloing
英灵殿
on Mythic can be considered extreme soloing for a mage in 940 gear, but the exact same run for a hunter in 970 gear is casual soloing.
Another part of extreme soloing is pushing - whether it is for a world first or class world first. Unlike non-pushing extreme soloing, where you still have guides and examples to follow, these soloers are the trailblazers who create the strategies. This kind of soloing is extreme pushed to its limits, where the soloers must investigate the mechanics of a boss, use all the tools of their classes and come up with new and usually innovative ideas just to get that first kill.
Mionee is probably the most famous extreme soloer in the community
Why is Soloing?
Once upon a time, there was a forum called Elitistjerks, that ironically was full of very nice people. In the depths of its myriad threads, there was one who stood below quite a lot of them except for a small, but enthusiastic, portion of the community. And it was called
Soloing old instances for fun and profit
. The late EJ forum (now deceased) met its maker years ago, but nowadays many other soloing threads have "Fun and profit" in them. As such, I personally think that
Soloing for fun and profit
is the perfect description for the spirit of the community. Let's break it down.
Profit
Let's do an exhaustive list of what soloing (mainly casual soloing) can bring.
Soloing can bring you a little gold (about for a MOP boss),
transmogrification
,
reputation
, and don't forget
mounts
.
It can allow you to do so-called
group quests
alone without pausing to look for a group or even
invasion points
if you do not want to use the group finder and have time to kill.
Some
world quests
require to kill elite mobs, but with a little soloing experience even the hard ones can be 1v1'd.
Dungeons can also be solo'd for the
world quests
,
attunements
, artifact power and quests. For example, many experienced soloers can rush
战争的使者
in less than a couple of hours should they choose.
If you want to do something, but finding a group doesn't motivate you, learning how achieve your goals on your own can be a solution. And it can be fun!
Fun
Once you've spent many hours and thousand of gold on a boss a group can defeat in 10 minutes, profit isn't really in the cards - at least, not in-game profit. But it is still awesome. Soloing can generate many benefits.
The challenge. People climb mountains because they are there, and players solo because it's challenging content. If you think you're bored with your character, then soloing can present a new challenges by adding a new dimension to the game, like PvP or pet battles.
Better understanding of your class. Once you can't blame the healer or the rest of the party, you will learn the limits and mechanics of your class as never before, by using different sets of talents and gear as you focus on both defence and offence.
Better understanding of game mechanics. How are the abilities coded, and what changes when only one player is present? Having to deal with every ability helps you to learn how to survive or avoid them. It also helps to explore general principles - how the game defines a tank, or when and how abilities choose a target.
Quality of life outside soloing. If his party is wiping on a dungeon boss, a soloer can equip his soloing gear and solo the last 20% of a boss once the rest of the party is dead. I'll always remember 2-manning Harbaron +15 Tyrannical because all the others kept dying to the scythes.
Recognition and community interaction. If you solo a new boss or dungeon for your class, don't hesitate to record and publish it. And even if it's nothing impressive, let's say an old raid transmogrification run, but there is no guide, why not share with the community? It will be appreciated.

Where is Soloing?
In-game, soloing is wherever Blizzard says "this is group content" and players say "nope". Which I guess is another definition of soloing.
In the community, casual soloing can mostly be found in guides on forums such as
MMO-champion
,
reddit
or
Wowhead
. On wowhead in particular, you can choose a boss, dungeon or achievement and check the comment. Order by date, and you'll find a lot of comments such as
I was able to solo this as <class> with <ilvl> gear on <patch number>. Here is how I did it: <description>
For extreme soloing, it's currently scattered. Forums like Elitisjerks are gone, and other community blogs - such as
Warcraft Hunters Union
- are no longer updated. There a personal blogs scattered, but nothing is centralised. If you want to find soloers and soloing you can follow them on
twitter
, or check their
youtube channel
, but you have to find them first.
Currently, Wowhead plans on trying to regroup the scattered soloers, and to get more people both interested and participating to the soloing community.

Know your Target
Once you've decided to solo an NPC, remember that they are bound by their code. As such, in-depth analysis is the first step to countering and finally victory.
Abilities
Before attacking a boss, make sure to test out the mechanics.
The first ability any boss has is his
Melee Attack
. On some bosses, it will be the main source of damage. In the same raid, melee damage can go from simple to double between bosses.
Then there is his run speed and the room you are working with, in case he has displacement abilities, void zones or you want to kite him.
Even if you know the boss, recheck the boss abilities. You may not be used to handling them all at once, and they can sometimes work differently than expected when you are soloing. Same with adds.
The other ability every boss has a
狂暴
or a
variation
.
Finally there are the timings. Sometimes abilities combo, and sometimes you have downtime where you'll take less damage or be able to dps more. Getting the timing of abilities is crucial.
Understanding the mechanics
Mechanics are supposed to work a certain way. And they were tested thoroughly. However, a player's understanding of said mechanics can be limited, or it can work differently when a single player is present. As such, testing is necessary.
For melee attacks, the distribution of damage changes during the fight - sometimes he'll stop when casting, or hit harder in some phases, or stay still for a few seconds even if you run away. Some bosses are immobile - for example, on
金加洛斯
, getting out of melee range will avoid you
熔铸之击
and
粉碎打击
deals little and constant damage, but if you try that on
海拉
she will cast
腐蚀新星
, increasing her damage, and follow up with
毒水吐息
no matter the range.
Abilities have requirements. Bosses will usually use tank abilities, such as
爆裂溃烂
, on their target regardless of spec. But there are others, such as
重力之引
, that will never be used on a dps or healer - just as there are "ranged" or "dps" abilities such as
隔离区
that will never target a tank even if no other target is present. Then sometimes it has something to do with the number of players - on
寂灭者阿古斯
,
海天之力
requires a minimum of 2 people to activate, and
阿格拉玛的化身
can go on a non-tank player but will never be used twice in a row on the same target - hence 50% uptime on a soloer and not 100%.
You can check if abilities such as can be outranged, such as
奥术冲击
(40 yd) on
伊凡尔
. Another way of avoiding abilities is checking how line of sight (LoS) affects the abilities - if you LoS
隔离区
on
科蒂拉克斯
it will miss you completely and you can resume dps, but on
格罗斯
, although you can LoS
燃烧护甲
, he will simply not cast it (so it won't go on CD) if no targets are in LoS - in other words, the instant he sees you again, he will cast it, buying you a few seconds but not allowing you to avoid it.
There are unexpected bugs that can arise. For example, on
海拉
,
海洋污染
seems to be coded to deal 10% more damage (non multiplicative) per tick. But if reapplied constantly to the same person, the damage increase will stay - and a debuff meant to do 2M damage in 10 seconds will end doing more than 15M in 10 seconds after a few minutes.
You want to learn how abilities affect each other. Some successions of abilities may combo to increase the damage you were expecting to take, or reduce it. On
麦迪文之影
, if you are solo and are frozen by
霜寒
, it may feel like a wipe. But you have a 50% chance of him using
炼狱箭
. It will unfreeze you, and nullify the fire damage. Sometimes delaying an ability will delay others, changing the timings of the fight.
When the boss change phases it can affect the abilities - maybe he interrupts them, or maybe he waits to finish casting. There may be multiple conditions for a phase change -
占星师艾塔乌斯
enters phase 4 at 30%
or
at the 6:40 mark, whichever comes first.
Finally, once all abilities are understood, you need to understand the timings. For example, the
艾萨拉之怒
fight: if the timing isn't disrupted by the phase change, the second
奥术炸弹
will explode and stun you during a
压抑深渊
, stopping you from using a CD or healing yourself before the massive burst of damage. And the third will stun you during
强力激流
, so if you are in melee range at the time it will hurt. But changing phase right as he is about to cast
奥术炸弹
changes the timers to something more manageable.
In short, do not expect bosses abilities to work as intended or expected, and remember there may be ways to avoid them. Since all abilities will target the only target present, so you'll often have to deal with combos.
Dealing with the mechanics
Once you've understood how the mechanics work, you can decide which ones to avoid, cheese or deal with. You must plan out the timings in order to be three steps ahead. As such, your positioning and CD management should be kept for specific moments or as backup to problematic combo or to correct mistakes. Which is why you must plan and balance two strategies at once : survival and damage.
Survival
If you die during a solo, the fight is over since there is no one to rez you. As such, dying is the most common lose condition. In a pure survival fight, you want to reach the point where you heal more than the boss deals damage. If it is not the case, you must either increase your survivability or find a way to reduce the damage you take. We'll see in the next sections how to achieve this. The most common downside of maximising survivability is loss of dps.
Damage
The objective of a solo is to kill your target. This is usually achieved by hitting it until it dies. But many enemies have a damage requirement: this can be a hard
狂暴
, a
soft enrage
, or simply
hard hitting abilities
where you must kill him before running out of defensive cooldowns. Maximising damage while dealing with the boss's abilities makes a solo easier and sometimes is required for a kill. However, maximising dps sometimes requires you to take risks or even avoidable damage.
In the end, some bosses will be dps races, some will be a battle for survival, but quite a few of them will be about finding the right balance. How much can you reduce your survival for the sake of dps before you die? What is the minimum amount of damage you have to deal? How much margin for error do you want? How will modifying the timing of offensive and defensive cooldowns,
嗜血
included, help? When soloing a difficult boss, you will probably need a lot of theorycrafting and experimentation in order to adapt your gameplay to the situation.
Trash
Soloers talk little about trash, but they can bar your way in raids and especially in dungeons. Treat them like bosses you can stun, CC, and if necessary kill half, die, then kill the rest. They can make from some nice training.
Know your class
Once you know how the boss will be trying to kill you, and the possible countermeasures, you must prepare. A soloer can need every tool in his arsenal to kill a boss - versatility is key.
Specs
All classes have several specs. The first distinction that can be made is the roles:
Tank: usually considered the best class for soloing. They have the most survivability by far, and between 50-66% of a dps's damage. In patch 7.3.5, some tanks can heal themselves more than a healer can heal while being the best at reducing damage - and therefore can survive +22 keys on their own. Their maximum dps is at about 1M33 single target.
Damage: These specs have less in term of survivability, but it changes a lot between classes - warlocks are know for their toughness and self-healing, whereas mages are considered very fragile. However, a 7.3.5 damage dealer can reach 2M dps, allowing them to vanquish foes faster.
Healing: Pretty invisible as far as extreme soloing is involved, since they have less survivability than a tank and very low dps. If you are a high-level healing soloer, please link videos in the comments :)
Finally, even when focusing on a single role, different specs may have different outputs, especially in terms of survivability and self-healing. Kiting and mobility can also play a role. In Legion, you also have to take legendaries into account.
Builds and Talents
When soloing, take a look at your talents - for PvE, classes usually try to maximise their output or damage reduction. In soloing, you usually want to compensate where you are lacking - a paladin confident in his survival but lacking damage can choose
over
正义保护者
, and hunter used to
杀戮眼镜蛇
for maximising dps might want to sacrifice a few thousand dps for
野兽守护
's damage reduction.
On a class-by-class basis, many talents can have situational utility depending on the target. Make sure you know how each one works, and in which cases underperforming talents can have their uses.
Gear
Soloing gear is not necessarily your usual gear. Before setting out, you might have to review your priorities.
Stats
Stamina
: stamina increases your maximum health, allowing you to survive more damage. It also affects percentage-based abilities, such as
普瑞达兹,萨瓦里克的杰作
. On the flip side, sacrificing offensive stats for stamina can reduce the healing of other abilities, such as
无视苦痛
.
Leech
: leech is a great source of self healing, especially in situations when you can dps a lot. Some classes benefit more from it than others - a fire mage with 15% leech and massive AoE can easily survive tanking
斯考匹隆
, for example. For others (mainly tanks) it will only heal a small amount compared to other sources, and for pet classes leech loses a lot of value due to damage being split.
Versatility
: despite being underpowered for some specializations, reducing damage taken can be useful.
Avoidance
: reducing damage taken from area of effect spells can be useful on some fight where they are a significative source of damage.
Speed
: useful if you are kiting, or simply trying to time a mythic+ solo. Seldom serves on bosses, but can give some quality of life improvements.
Trinkets
Trinkets are usually the most unique pieces of gear. If you come across an interesting trinket for soloing, don't hesitate to grab it rather than let it be vendored. If you're looking for stamina or stats, trinkets such as
帕杰什的勋章
or
终极末日印记
have it covered - bonus points if they have an interesting effect.
安托鲁斯,燃烧王座
has some of the best trinkets for non-tanks such as
裂隙世界法典
and
阴燃之泰坦结界
who massively boost survivability in constant damage and burst situations respectively. Another example of an interesting proc is
残缺的种荚
- if it's unique, it can increase your options. On the dps side, there are many options depending on wether you need burst, such as
勇气号角
, or AoE. Trinkets can really chance the pace of a fight, so make sure you know what's out there.
Legendaries
In Legion, legendaries have unique abilities that make choosing the right legendaries vary depending on the boss - unlike raids where classes usually always use the same ones. You are not limited to your spec's legendaries. Focus on what you need the most and which legendaries can bring it to you, or try out different pairs.
Consumables
Here again, choose wisely. The most simple example is stamina vs damage flask, but even some
foods
can have niche uses. There are also quite a few
potions
that have an effect unavailable to your class. Just because you can't do something doesn't mean there isn't an item that can do it for you. Don't forget your
星界治疗药水
and
高山战鼓
.
Tips
Comparisons with Mythic+
If you're having difficulties wrapping your head around soloing, the mindset is extremely similar to high-level Mythic+. Those who follow high key pushing or the MDI can attest that their tanks have learned to survive without the healer, that trinkets used are all over the place, and that they keep trying to innovate their runs in search of the best path possible. They also pull as much as they can for dps but not one more - searching for the balance of dps and survival. They sometimes do +22 keys without a healer, to give an idea.
The difference is that a high-level mythic+ run is a team effort, wether a soloing is about pushing the limits of a single character/class. But they can serve as inspiration.
Entering a raid on your own
If you need to be in a raid group to enter a raid, or want to reset a dungeon and need to be in a group, it is possible to open the group finder then start a group - this will make you the leader of a single player group, and you can switch to raid etc. Note that if you do "leave party", you will be ported out after one minute, which is an easy way to leave a dungeon.
Start small
If you want to learn to solo, old raids and normal/heroic dungeons are a good place to start. Try to find challenging content that will force you to better yourself, but with a certain margin for error.
Summary
Soloing easy dungeons or raids for profit is fun, extreme soloing is even more fun!
The soloing community is spread out, but you can still contribute.
When soloing, analyzing the mechanics is key. Timings, combos and trigger conditions are usually more complex then they seem at first glance.
Soloing is a mix of survival and damage.
Different specs have different soloing potential. But they all have many tools at their disposal.
Making use of every tool you have including talents, gear, consumables, legendaries and more is the key to getting a new kill.

is a special case. He likes to solo with many different classes - not always top tier fights (although he got the world first on Xavius), but he definitely makes up in his ability to play everything. If you cannot find the class you want on the list above, check him out.
About the Author
Durendil
has been playing his hunter since Vanilla. During WotLK, he decided to try soloing because the alternative was playing another class. He started with BC heroic dungeons, and followed with
熔火之心
and
卡拉赞
. It was then that he ran out of guides, so he started creating his own strategies for Zul'gurub (level 60 version), Zul'Aman (level 70 version) and
预言者斯克拉姆
, which required nature resistance gear. He rose as one of the top two hunter soloers along with
Caribald
, and made a name for himself in the hunter community thanks to his first hunter
solo of The Lich King
. He continued soloing expansion to expansion, getting the first hunter kills on
拉格纳罗斯
(10-25H),
雷神
(normal and heroic), and
海拉
. During that time Caribald retired from soloing and
Shoot
made his debut.
He plans on keeping on soloing and pushing his hunter to his limits. He has no plans to play another class, or a petless hunter. He is excited for BFA because the raids of Legion will be fun to solo, and because the introduction of Mythic+ has given him greater quantities of challenging soloing material.

I'm all for bringing the soloing community closer together. The majority of the MMOC stickied solo class threads were closed (and those that aren't are still basically dead) so another place for that kind of discussion is something I'll always welcome. I recall the idea of a discord server being tossed around but I do not believe it gained much traction. Anyway, my content is Rogue and it will always be uploaded on
