Laugh if you like, but slam is handy with a slow two-hander. I like it more than Mortal Strike. It's got a low rage cost, and after the 2.0.1 patch, the Improved talent costs just two points and reduces the cast time by a full second. If you are sitting at 100 rage, chaining six or seven Slams in the span of just a few seconds is obscene.

Hmm, the Wowhead explanation states that the weapon damage, when calculated for the purposes of Slam, is not "normalised." Does that mean that it is much better to use a Slow 3.8s 2her and just spam it like no tommorrow?
Btw, I have analysed Slam v Mortal Strike. I am assuming that you can spam it. Please correct me if I'm wrong...
Assumptions:
1. Slam is NOT talented to 0.5s casting time.
2. Weapon damage (W) and speed are identical (weapon speed = 3.3)
3. We track the damage over 6 seconds.
4. Attack powers are identical (1400).
5. Rage requirements are fulfilled.
6. No crits occur.
Mortal Strike-Hit-Mortal Strike
In 6.0s, you get 1 mortal strike at 0s, 1 normal swing at 3.3s, 1 mortal strike at 6s.
Damage:
Mortal Strike 1: W + 210
Normal Swing: W + 1400/14
Mortal Strike 2: W + 210
Total = 3W + 520 @ 60 - X
(X = amount of rage you gain from the interim Normal Swing)
Total damage per rage point is more than 0.05W + 8.667
Exact damage per rage point = (3W + 520)/(60 - X)
Slam Spam
In 6.0s, you get 5 slams at 0s, 1.5s, 3.0s, 4.5s, 6.0s
Damage:
Slam: W + 140
Total = 4W + 560 @ 75 rage
Exact damage per rage point = 0.053W + 7.467
Sounds to me that when Slam is UNTALENTED, MS is likely to outdamage Slam overall. However, if Slam is TALENTED, you could take advantage of an interim swing AND spam it 5 times in the same period.

I don't think a mob or opposing player will survive 24 auto attacks + 12 MS/Slam assuming you will use rend and overpowered whenever possible.

Remember that Slam is also affected by impale so the extra "white hit + damage" you'll gain is clearly more than a white hit with that much bonus damage, given a 2h warrior's huge chance to crit in raids.

I think it is a good skill to use when you level up, because of the lack of instant skills, you have to use heroic strike. Until you get mortal strike or blood thrist, this should be the best rage dumping skill.
note:
However slam dps is quite advanced for a leveling warrior.

Don't be a nub. Slam can be very useful if used with a weapon with slow attack speed. it is actually more useful than heroic strike when timed correctly. Instead of waiting 3.4 seconds for another hit with that 2-hander, you can get another attack in 1.5 secs. Of course, if you have a fast attack weapon like a 1-hand sword, this ability will not be worth it.

Notice that Slam doesn't do damage on your "next swing" like Heroic Strike, Cleave, etc. It does Weapon damage after 1.5 seconds. Therefore, if you're using a Speed 3.8 weapon, you'd be effectively attacking twice as fast if you're spamming these uninterrupted. Just something to consider.

Also, this doesn't take up an attack like Heroic Strike. If you use it correctly inbetween your swings, Slam can cost less rage than Heroic Strike. Because Heroic Strike uses up an attack that would otherwise give u rage. A crit heroic strike wont give u any rage, but a crit normal attack will give u huge rage.
You might not think this isnt important, but if you have a very very slow weapon, heroic strike can actually cost like 10 more rage than it says. Then Slam damage per rage is higher than Heroic Strike, same with DPS.
Basically, Heroic Strikes are best to be used with fast weapons, whereas slam is better with slower weapons and higher dmg weapons.

it doesnt slam the target to the ground, if that would be the case, it would be pretty damn powerful... to bad it doesnt stun

When your MT has aggro, you have your largest slowest weapon and you spam this.
In this role (where you have uninterrupted casts) this would more than double the DPS of your 3.0 speed weapon. In 4.5-5 seconds your arcanite reaper has 3 swings instead of 1.
Against quick targets that keep interrupting your cast, not so useful.

You just have to use it right.
That is, assuming you're an arms spec, using a slow 2h.
To reduce attack speed by more than half equates to increasing DPS by more than 100%. That is without adding in the relatively negligible damage bonus of Slam.
FURTHERMORE, this counts as a weapon skill - With impale, all crits' damage is incrased by 20%.
Remember that when attacking twice as quickly as normal, you also will crit twice as often.
When raiding, all fights basically result in nigh-infinite rage for a well equipped warrior. At hammers away time during boss fights, rather than blowing all my Rage on one or two executes, I spam slam for massive and consistent damage. I've actually managed to pull hate away from our main tank when I had crit several times in a row, merely due to damage dealt.
This ability is not worthless, rather, it is almost too powerful.

No matter what you say or choose to think about slam. Its still here.. so obvioustly more people have found a use for it that others. You just need to know how to play. So improved slam is in fury. Yet if you have a nice big 2h your going to be going for ms. You dont need to improve slam to be able to make good use of it. Slam is a no in pvp, just dont even try. Unless ofcourse there entangled, stunned or in frost. Then use it, but in most cases. HS is the way to go. But PVE is a difrent story. If your a good warrior and know how to keep your rage under control indstead of hitting every ability as soon as you have enough rage you can build up your rage while still doing a good job with your abilities, and as many people have said.. slam is much faster than waiting for your attack which is usually 3+ seconds if your using a 2h, and does extra damage. No it doesnt crit everytime.. who ever said that.. just no.. not at all. But in the end its a decent ability. Those who dont like it, doesnt mean there not good warriors, it means they have a difrent play style which could be just as good in there own way. This is just to show all of you that slam does have a use.

Let's create some make-believe weapons:
SLOW AXE has an attack speed of 3.0 Seconds, with a DPS of 30. That means every 3 seconds, it hits for 90 damage.
FAST SWORD has an attack speed of 1.5 Seconds, also with a DPS of 90. Since it's speed is faster, each hit does much less damage, in this case, it's exactly half: 45.
Slam is a 1.5 second cast, and it causes "weapon damage plus 32." That means when slam hits, it deals the same damage your weapon would normally deal, and an extra 32. Here's some math:
WP (weapon damage) / AS (attack speed) = DPS
SLOW AXE
-Auto attack
90 / 3.0 = 30 DPS
-Slam
90 / 1.5 = 60 DPS
But remember slam is WP + 32, so:
-Slam
90 + 32 (122) / 1.5 = 81.3 DPS
FAST SWORD
-Auto Attack
45 / 1.5 = 30 DPS
-Slam
45 + 32 (77) / 1.5 = 51.3 DPS
Though the 2 weapons had the same DPS, the DPS of the slower weapon was almost tripled with Slam, while the DPS of the faster weapon wasn't even doubled. Clearly Slam was intended for use with slower weapons.
Also consider the Improved Slam ability. In the same scenario, but with 1.0 attack speed, Slam with the SLOW AXE would effectively deal out 122 DPS, assuming it was going uninterrupted.

I slapped myself in the face when i realized this. Your regular attack swing is NOT only weapon dmg / attack speed... Attack Power is also factored in somehow, and i'm not exactly sure how. I'm sure it's some combination of strength and something else, idk. but i re worked this with my current equip and actual auto-swing dps and the slam dps.
Killmaim: 21.7 dps 3.2 Sec
Actual DPS with strength/attack power, etc facrtored in, WITH Battle Shout: 44.8 dps 3.2 Sec
Slam: hits for 69.5 + 32 (101.5). ends up being 67.6 dps @ 1.5 Sec
So default Slam isn't as huge an improvement as we originally thought, but it's still substantial. in my case, if i had the 1.0 second Slam with the 5/5 talents, it would be 101.5 dps compared to auto-swing's 44.8.
Also keep in mind i'm lvl 31 (ROFL), so i don't have any other talents like Enrage or Flurry, etc, if you specced Fury, and it's also not taking into consideration other procs such as Deep Wounds. Also, while using Slam, you can't use abilities such as Overpower, which do not interrupt your auto-swing cycle.
So looking at things as i have here, i retract my original thoughts about Slam being superior.

Why are people even talking about this talent in relation to PvP? That's like discussing the benefits of using taunt in the battlegrounds. This is a PvE ability, designed for those using slow weapons.
For some reason the computer loves using this ability when it mind controls you. It can be beneficial in, say, a Lucifron fight when you are about to roflpwn your priest because the sheepers aren't paying attention. All someone has to do is tap you with damage and it stretches the cast time out longer and longer, potentially saving you from an embarrasing wipe.

Solowise i'd prefer MS for simplicity. But this skill really shine in raid. It has a high dmg/ragecost when using a slow two hander and it won't conflict with the rage gained in normal attack. Recommand use when offtanking it's not crap at all.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned is that Heroic Strike adds extra threat. Slam is good when you are not MT becuase A) you won't be getting attacked so you won't be getting interupted; and B) you won't be generating extra threat with Heroic Strike.

1)Slam does reset the swing counter. It is best used right after a swing.
2) Slam triggers the 1.5 second global cooldown regardless of talents
3) Slam cast time (yes cast time) is 1.5 seconds but can be reduced to .5 second cast with Improved Slam talent. Slam counts as a spell.
4) Slam is not better than Mortal Strike or Whirlwind or any other instant attack. Why? It still takes time to cast and resets the swing counter.
5) Slam > HS for 2hand rage dump, regardless of spec. HS has a hidden cost in that it causes your next auto-attack, which HS replaces, to not generate rage. Let's say you would generate 12 rage with that attack (which after the recent rage buff of 2.0.10 is roughly what you would get). HS then costs 15 rage base + 12 hidden cost = 27. HS also has an average delay of weapon speed / 2. It could be at worst case your weapon speed until the damge goes through. In other words, Slam attacks quicker and costs less rage. It is an ideal rage dump for 2handers.
6) HS has extra threat associated with it, Slam doesn't. If for whatever god forsaken reason you are 2H tanking, use HS as a rage dump.
7) HS > Slam for 1hand rage dump. Why? Most 1hand weapons will attack faster with HS than Slam. Even with the higher rage cost HS is preferrable. Slam's utility is a function of weapon speed.
In short, use Slam as a PvE rage dump for 2hand weapons. Mortal Strike and Whirlwind are always better to use than Slam. Use Slam only when you have rage to burn and MS/WW are on cooldown. In PvP and tanking you don't want to trigger global cooldown (GCD) so use HS.

This is not a pvp skill. Anyone who says this skill sucks is using it in pvp, still thinks the cast time resets when hit, or just doesn't know how to properly use it.
What this skill is: Currently THE BEST 1 vs. 1 grinding and pve attack (sans overpower) for 2 handers .
Why?
Plain and simple, the damage to rage ratio is retarded for this skill. Ya MS is instant but I'm only 1/2 second slower slamming when properly used. In rage cost I do 2 slams for every 1 MS...nevermind the 5 second cooldown for full spec MS vs. a 1.5 second cooldown (the GCD) for slam. Spamming slam and procing flurry = owning mobs easy.
In short, pick this skill up at level 30, get fully improved slam at 31. If you're a 2h warrior, WW axe can be obtained with help at level 30. It was ownage all day everyday and very fast exp from level 31-40+ with the WW axe and mostly green armor items for myself. Go to AH and pick up executioners cleaver at level 43 and keep it going etc etc etc.
As bifodus said, the trick is knowing when to use it. It's best used right after the auto swing EVERY time you auto swing with the main hand weapon. This is not a skill I try to fight and hold rage with; improved slam will cast well before the GCD ends.

Slam is great for protection warriors, using a slightly slower onehander in pvp. (not that prot warriors is any good in pvp but it is fun to do anyway) after a succesful concussion blow, spam this ability like crazy, if your lucky youll get in one or two, and you have done descent dps before you get pwned

Just slam after every autoswing, with improved slam your getting a second attack at the price of just .5 seconds, so you get 2 attacks every 4.5 seconds with a wpn of speed 4. these is roughly a 70% increase in effective attackspeed excluding the bonus damage slam does. this also allows you to get the rage needed because each attack should net u about 15 rage, including the attacks your taking and any abilities you have that increase rage. using slam at any time other than right after an autoswing is pointless.

I see this being useful, pretty much only for DPS raid warriors. For grinding, you'll be getting hit and increasing that cast time, probably above 3 seconds. For PvP, being stationary is way too great a disadvantage for this to be useful, it means you can't chase hamstringed people down, you can't keep up with a jumpy rogue, and you'll also be getting more casting time again. But when you can use it, it's extremely useful.

Is the optimum time to hit slam to maximize DPS right when the white damage number from your normal swing shows up on the screen (if you have that option turned on, of course)? I think I had read bad information before, that you could time slam to occur almost immediately after your normal swing - like if you had a 3.0 speed weapon and the 1.5 cast time slam, if you started slam 1.6 seconds after your last swing, it would land .1 seconds after your normal hit, and only slightly affect the time of your normal swings. In practice, if I am using regular slam and a 3.0 speed weapon, it appears the best I could hope for is swing + 1.5s slam +3.0s for next swing = total 4.5s. Is this about right? If so, I'll likely respec to pick up Imp. Slam to cut the whole time down to 3.5s.
Also, do any warriors here using Slam have Endless Rage? I find that unless I throw in a couple MS once in a while, I'll end a fight with a whole lot of rage. Would like to know if anyone's worked out an optimum time to throw in an MS and not have to miss a slam.

anyone thought this would be good in pvp with improved hamstring, 15% chance to immobilize the target for 5 seconds. 5 seconds is enough time to get a couple of slams in. Charge in, hit hamstring, bam... immobilized sucker, then you can slam your hearts content out (well for 5secs lol).

It is so simple. It is Usable when having a slow 2h Weapon, such as The Pacifier.(4.0 speed)
Not that good when dual wielding or tanking tho. you dela more amage by using other abilities then, such as MS and BT.

Slam = Teh Sux0rz! I'm almost lvl 52 and I have yet to effectively use Slam... the way I see it why slam when you have mortal strike and heroic strike? Waste of rage points imho!

slam doesn't make any sense. using it is to choose weapon damage over set damage. weapon damage is better with 2h, but set is better for a 1h. in other words, if you have a 2h equiped, this is better, but with a 1h, HS is more dmg for the same rage cost. what i don't understand is why theres a 2h spell, in the tree for dual wielders. SLAM clearly benifits 2h users more then 1h users, so why is it in the tree for two 1hs, instead of in the 2h, arms tree? this design makes no sense, inless your an arms specced 2h user just in fury for extra dmg. but if you are specced for fury, you'd be using dual 1hs, in which this spell would DROP your dmg, and using a 2h for fury spec, would lower your dmg even further, since you rely on melee crits, attack speed, and dual wield spec talent.
this spell seems to be in the wrong tree, making it nearly useless. the only use i'd see for this spell is fury wars using 2hs, which dual wielding would produce higher dmg, or arms spec wars in fury stance, but since mortal strike can be used outside of battle stance, why use this spell at all?

Aparently it does not count to your weapon timer, so it's 15 rage = 1 extra attack. Not instant cast like MS but still 1 extra attack, doesn't cost 30 rage like MS either, costs 15 rage. That's not too bad. Extra attacks are a thing to look forward if you're the kind that uses huge and slow 2-handers like me.
The times when I have used this are rare, mainly when:
- Another warrior has all aggro, and I don't.
- My target is stunned/disoriented. (With enough rage, concussion blow gives you a long enough stun to score slam 3 times.)

Slam is VERY useful for people with slow normal attack times.
It takes me 3.40 seconds to land a normal hit. If I use slam 2 times in a row, I do nearly twice the damage that I normally do.
