Welcome to Wowhead's Burning Crusade Classic Leveling Guide! This guide is composed of general tips on how to level in TBC Classic effectively. While TBC Classic has a level cap of 70 (ten levels higher than WoW Classic's level cap of 60), it will still take a fair amount of time to progress from 60 to 70. This guide will provide tips such as the most efficient ways to level, which zones to approach, and general things that you should be doing as you level in the old world as well as Outland.
Leveling Changes in TBC Classic
Compared to Classic WoW, a few notable changes make the leveling experience smoother for characters below level 60.
The amount of experience needed to progress from level 20 to level 60 has been

TBC Classic Leveling Methods
In TBC Classic, there are a few popular leveling methods: Doing quests, running dungeons, grinding mobs, or boosting.
Questing
is the most basic method, where you will simply go through zones and complete any questlines in them. Questing can be done solo, although some quests may require a group to complete. Questing is a very flexible leveling method, as it allows you to start and stop at your leisure. In addition, questing allows you to level up professions while you are leveling your character.
Dungeons
are far more efficient than questing, as they provide more experience and guaranteed item drops that are often better than gear obtained through questing. However, you will require a reliable group of five people that are willing to commit time to repeatedly running the same dungeons for multiple hours.
Grinding
is also a decent option in-between questing and dungeons. Simply choose a zone and kill mobs repeatedly for experience - ideally grinding mobs that will also drop certain items or provide reputation gains.
Boosting
is typically reserved for characters below level 60, where a max-level player is paid gold to efficiently kill mobs in a dungeon to provide high amounts of experience to lower-level characters. Boosting is by far the most efficient way to level, although it tends to be quite expensive.
It is recommended to use a combination of these leveling methods, as there are a limited number of quests to complete in each zone and dungeon groups might not always be accessible. However, there are certainly enough quests and dungeons to reach level 70 with ease.
Questing in TBC Classic
Questing is considered to be the most common leveling method in World of Warcraft. Leveling by yourself can be advantageous as questing is very flexible and can be done on any schedule - without a reliable group to do dungeons, solo questing can be just as efficient with the following factors in mind.
While questing, there are a few factors to consider that will determine how fast you can level: combat duration, recovery, and travel time.
Combat Duration
is the amount of time spent killing mobs to complete your quests. Leveling in a damage spec, learning new spells and spell ranks, and getting better gear with more offensive stats will greatly reduce combat duration.
Recovery
is the amount of time you will spend regenerating your resources (health, mana, etc) between killing mobs. To effectively increase your recovery rate, it would be worth investing in food, water, and the First Aid profession to create and use bandages that provide healing every 60 seconds.
Travel Time
is the time you will spend traveling from one quest objective to another, and across multiple zones. This is the portion that usually consumes the most time, so it is important to try and optimize your questing. Questing addons such as
Questie
will save a great deal of time overall.
Outland Quest 58-70 Guides
Below you will find Wowhead's set of TBC Classic guides designed for Alliance and Horde players interested in leveling 58-70 by questing through Outland zones. These guides, organized by zone, are meant to help new players navigate through important subregions and quest hubs for their faction in that specific area. These leveling guides will detail the level range for the region, optional leveling path, important quest hubs, and best quest rewards to pick up.

Quests to Avoid
As a general rule of thumb for zone changes, you do not need to complete every single quest in a zone before moving on to another zone. Several zones have questlines that will go well beyond the zone's initial level. For instance,
北荆棘谷
is one of the first zones viable at level 30 for both Horde and Alliance, but quests in STV range from level 30 all the way to level 45, and you will certainly not be able to reach such a high level only by questing there. With Outland this is a bit different, as many quests in each zone provide reputation gains for relevant factions, and lead to dungeon quests with potent rewards.
An easy way to tell whether a quest might be right for you to do is to look at the color a quest is displayed to you in your quest log:
Red quests are quests with objectives that are much higher level than you (5 levels or more). It is generally advised to skip these altogether until you reach a higher level.
Orange quests are quests with objectives slightly higher than your level (3 to 5 levels). You are able to complete these quests, but it might be advised to form a group to complete them.
Yellow quests are quests with objectives close to your level (2 levels below to 2 levels above). You should be able to complete these quests by yourself without much issue.
Green quests are quests with objectives slightly below your level (3 levels to 10 levels below). You should be able to easily complete these quests solo.
Gray quests are quests with objectives much lower than your level (10 levels or less). These quests will grant only 10% of a quest's experience and are generally not worth doing.
It is generally considered better to wait until you slightly out-level a zone's initial requirements, as it is much faster to do lower level zones at a faster pace instead of doing zones that are slightly higher level than your current level. Tthis can always change depending on whether you are in a group, you're just questing, you're also grinding, or even doing dungeons while also questing.
Other types of quest you may want to avoid while leveling by yourself are
Elite quests
. However, if you have friends, or can find groups for these quests, they do offer more experience and better rewards than normal quests. With TBC Classic, a number of elite quests (and their associated mobs) have been converted into non-elite quests and non-elite mobs, such as Jintha'alor's associated quests in The Hinterlands.
Experience Solo vs With a Group
Although questing can be done solo, it is also beneficial to group up, even if just to share credit so you are not competing with other players. In addition to sharing experience gains with a friend, you will effectively kill more mobs collectively, or at least kill them twice as fast. However, experience gained from killing mobs is shared between all players in the group, so you might not receive as much raw experience. The advantage of grouping lies in the fact that you can kill mobs faster and thus complete quests quicker, in addition to a more even experience gain split.
To offset the experience gain split while in a group, a small amount of bonus experience is included when killing mobs as a group. Assuming a mob grants 100 experience when killed by only one player, the experience gain split will look like this (based on the number of players in the group, assuming they are the same level):
Solo: 100 experience
2 Players: 50 experience per player
3 Players: 39 experience per player
4 Players: 33 experience per player
5 Players: 28 experience per player
It is worth noting that only experience gains from killing mobs are affected while in a group. Group members will still receive the same amount of experience for turning in quests. As such, the experience losses for killing mobs with more players is offset by the fact that a group will typically complete quests faster. Always consider how long it takes to complete a quest compared to how much experience you can gain from mobs before grouping with other players.
In addition, it is
not recommended
to try to complete quests while in a raid group. Most quests are unable to be completed in a raid group (unless explicitly stated in the quest log), and and the experience gained from mobs is dramatically reduced while in a raid group.
Dungeons in TBC Classic
Dungeon leveling typically refers to repeatedly running the same dungeon (or dungeons) multiple times with the same group of players. With an efficient group, you will be able to clear through dungeons very quickly with notable experience gains and item drops that tend to be better than quest rewards (and with later dungeons, may be considered pre-raid Best-in-Slot). However, this can only be done in a group with reliable and committed players - either found in your own guild, or from recruiting in chat channels such as
LookingForGroup
.
A heavy emphasis is placed on commitment, as dungeons tend to be less flexible than questing, so all players in the group should reliably be able to complete the dungeon or several dungeons. Recruiting unreliable members can result in a great deal of time being spent recruiting in chat channels, or simply waiting around. All group members will need to travel to the dungeon entrance, although unlike in Classic WoW, the meeting stones can effectively be used as summoning stones. So long as at least two group members make it to the dungeon's entrance, they can summon the remaining three group members. The only caveat to this is if the summoner (or summoning target) is too low or too high level relative to the dungeon, they will not be able to be summoned with the meeting stone.
Another downside with dungeon leveling is that you may out-level your professions. However, gathering professions may not be impacted as much depending on which dungeons you do, as many dungeons have node spawns for
采矿
and
草药学
, as well as skinnable mobs for players with
剥皮
.
A notable positive of dungeon leveling, specifically on PvP servers, is that world PvP will not impede your leveling progress as you will be in an instanced dungeon. While questing can be done solo, other players may be more interested in PvP combat than leveling quickly.

Dungeon Quests
Although it is possible to level quickly without dungeon grinding, it is still worthwhile to run a dungeon at least once in order to complete any quests associated with the dungeon. These dungeon quests can reward items that are comparable or better than the dungeon's loot, in addition to providing quite a bit of experience. Some dungeon quests can involve a fair bit of traveling, or a number of quest completion prerequisites before they become available.

Classic WoW Grinding
Grinding can be defined as choosing a zone with mobs and killing them repeatedly for experience gain. Grinding can be a good alternative to earn experience while transitioning from zone to zone, as the experience gains from grinding can outweigh the experience gains from questing in some circumstances. With grinding, you will want to find good zones with mobs that you can kill repeatedly with minimal to no downtime.
While it isn't required to camp out in one area and kill the same types of enemies for multiple hours, a good habit to maintain while leveling is to simply kill mobs as you travel to complete quests. Given that travel time tends to consume the most time while questing for experience, offsetting some of the travel time with some grinding can be beneficial. By grinding effectively between quests, you will be able to more easily reach certain thresholds to enter higher-level zones and/or complete higher-level quests.
Mob grinding is a popular strategy for certain classes that are able to handle multiple mobs in certain areas without any issue, particularly
法师
s. Our Classic WoW Mage Leveling Guide has a compilation of grinding locations that are mostly applicable to TBC Classic.

Leveling with Professions
Professions can provide useful items while leveling, such as consumables, armor, and weapons. Gathering professions (Mining, Herbalism, Skinning) are fairly easy to level up while you're leveling your character up, although production professions (Alchemy, Blacksmithing, Engineering, Jewelcrafting, Leatherworking, and Tailoring) can be a bit more difficult to match with your character's level while leveling up. Often times players will pick up one or two gathering professions to make some additional gold while leveling, and then exchange one of them for a production profession once they reach level 70.
in particular is a strong profession to pick up while leveling, as all characters can learn it due to it being a secondary profession. Players can craft bandages using the cloth they find from humanoid mobs, which will allow them to heal themselves during downtime and even during combat.
Profession Leveling Guides
Leveling Gear and Consumables
It's important to understand what your character needs to deal damage and progress - for example, melee classes scale greatly based on their weapons' speed and DPS, and caster classes scale greatly with spell damage. Itemizing for your class to deal optimal damage will allow you to level very efficiently. Gear can be obtained from a variety of sources, such as questing and professions, although it is generally a good idea to check the Auction House for affordable items that other players might find or craft.
In addition to gear, consumables are worth highlighting due to their utility. In TBC Classic, players are limited to using a Battle Elixir and a Guardian Elixir, alongside a Potion cooldown. While leveling, healing potions tend to be very affordable, so it would be worth checking the Auction House for them.
Saving for a Mount
At level 30, players will be able to purchase their 60% speed ground mount and
初级骑术
training, and
圣骑士
s and
术士
s can train their mount summoning spells from their respective class trainers for . The standard prices (before faction discounts) for training and a mount are listed below.
Level 30:

Level 60:
中级骑术

Increasing Bag Space
By default, all characters start with a 16-slot bag and a
炉石
. Increasing your bag space will allow you to carry more items, which is a huge benefit while leveling. Bags can be obtained from a variety of sources, such as mob drops, vendors, professions, and the Auction House. Most bags can also be traded, so when they're replaced by larger bags they can either be traded or sold.
As an incentive to improve the security of players' accounts, the default 16-slot bag expands to 20 slots if a
Battle.net Authenticator
is added to your Battle.net account.
Bags and Storage in TBC Guide
Setting Your Hearthstone
Your
炉石
allows you to return to wherever it is set, which can be done by speaking to a town or city's innkeeper. While it has a one hour cooldown, it can be set strategically while questing to reduce downtime. Typically players will set their
炉石
to the inn of a major city, such as
沙塔斯城
.
Minimap Tracking
In TBC Classic, players will be able to toggle the tracking of a variety of NPCs, such as NPCs that can repair, innkeepers, and flight masters. Tracking for gathering professions will also be listed at the top, such as
寻找矿物
, which can be toggled on and off - this also applies to
猎人
and
德鲁伊
tracking abilities. Tracking multiple things can clutter the minimap, so you can toggle them off and on based on your needs.
Taking Breaks from World of Warcraft
Leveling can take quite a lot of time in TBC, so taking some time to relax can be advantageous to your endurance. Breaks can result in time lost while leveling, although there are strategic times where you can easily take a small break - such as waiting for a zeppelin, or while you're on a long flight path. For more populated servers with login queues, it is a good idea to hop into the queue and get things done while you have no choice but to wait.
While it can be a bit risky, using the autorun feature allows your character to move forward automatically. By default this keybind is set to Num Lock.
Gaining Rested Experience
Related to taking breaks, you will inevitably have to log off and do things other than play World of Warcraft. To take advantage of this, it is advised to log off in an inn or a rest area to gain rested experience. Rested experience allows you to gain 200% increased experience from mobs that you kill. While this experience bonus can be gained while logged in and idling in an inn or rested area, it is gained at a much faster rate while logged off (and can be gained in a non-rest area at a slower rate while logged out). Rested experience accrues at a rate of 5% for every 8 hours of rest that your character takes, up to a total of 150% (1.5 levels).

the list of questing zones doesn't have swamp of sorrows. Was that intentional?

Some of these zones are a bit out of whack for the quests there. Hillsbard (Alliance) for example, quests from Southshore are all 30-38+, similarly Ashenvale alliance is quests 20-30. Likely be a few people levelling in Wrath that would appreciate a more accurate guide.
