Blackrock Depths is the largest instance in the game. It played a large part in the pre-expansion end-game, back when the level cap was 60. It contains a multitude of bosses and quests that range in difficulty from the low 50s right up to 60 and, back then, was the first instance where a substantial amount of the loot would last into the post-leveling end-game.
There are lots of interesting features inside that once played a big role but currently get overlooked. A portal to the Molten Core is fairly deep into the instance, but it's mainly for show. A quest completed in BRD allows you to teleport into MC, negating the need to run 40 (or quite a bit less these days) raiders through the instance just to enter. BRD is also home to the Black Forge and Black Anvil, which were required to create raiding gear (primarily fire resist).
To get to BRD, enter Blackrock Mountain from either southwest Searing Gorge or northwest Burning Steppes. If you enter from Searing Gorge, climb up on the giant chain that appears to your left and go down onto the big rock suspended in the center. Follow the stairs down and exit downwards onto the chain at the bottom. The quest giver for MC attunement is straight ahead and a passage leads right to get to the instance. Bear left in the cave and the instance is at the end of the chamber.
BRD is very non-linear: there's many ways to go through, and because of the sheer size, you'll probably want to pick and choose the encounters rather than running the whole thing in one sitting. Some of the more interesting things to do: the
Ring of Law
, a random boss in an arena, the
Dark Coffer
, which spawns the holder of a key to a chest in a random location, and the Grim Guzzler, a mid-instance bar that features a couple vendors and several boss encounters.

The quest-giver for the MC attunement is a High Elf. He's also the guy who will port you to MC whenever you go. The quest-giver for the Shadowforge Key (see a below comment for quest info) is a ghost, and you must be a ghost as well to see/talk to him.

Blackrock Depths is home to the Black Forge and the Black Anvil.
The Black Forge is the only forge that you can use to smelt Dark Iron ore. It can be found outside of the enterance to Molten Core. Across the bridge from the enterance to Molten Core, there is a path that lead off to the left (if you are facing the Molten Core enterance). At the end of the path is a fire elemental, and behind him is the Black Forge.
The Blank Anvil is the anvil that must be used to craft items that come form many of the Thorium Brotherhood recipes. It can be found in the same chamber as Lord Incendius, and as such, Lord Incendius must be defeated before you can make use of it.

Yeh I would say this is a very hard instance to do. The mobs are placed in these huge groups that are very annoying. Yeh I have done it twice both times the groups I was with wiped. Not just once but a few times. Maybe we just didnt have the right group composition (maybe cause Im a ret Pally). This will take a day to do, and I'm not kidding it is large and there are a lot of mobs. I think the place is a bout as big as one of the capital cities (maybe bigger). And be prepared for patrols, and lots of adds. And make sure you have a dedicated healer for this not someone who specs in combat but can heal (aka a shadow priest, or a ret pally).

You will need to run this instance at least 3 times to complete all the quest chains, and it is definately advisable that any groups you run with are well balanced. I have ran this instance in a few unbalanced groups and really struggled to get anywhere. The respawns in this instance are quite annoying as well, especially if you wipe (protect that healer!).

You are able to enter the instance at lvl40, it is not recommended tho.

There is a shortcut to the emp, which allows you to skip many annoying mobs and bosses if done correctly. In the same room as Lord Incendius, go to the lower bridge, and look for a large, molten rock. Jump down on it. Get your health up, then get in the lava and swim over to a small ledge, get on. There is a rock in the middle of the lava, swim over. Swim to the next ledge, and get full health and mana. The whole group should go at this time, because on the last rock nearest the bridge there are 4 elementals you need to fight. Kill them, then swim over to the bridge. You are there! Also, elementals swim in the lava, so keep an eye out for them. I recommend you jump as much as possible while swimming. Good luck :P

As a mage on lvl 70 and in rather decent gear I can solo this entire instance, the emperor is a bit of a bitch though as he likes to make himself immune to all damage and frequently spams "hand of thaurissan" on you which is a direct damage fire based spell followed by a lengthy stun.
Excellent source for large brilliant shards if you're an enchanter, and it's always nice paying this old epic instance a visit, wish there was some form of equivalent on lvl 70.

Finished most of the instance in about 2 and a half hours (everything except the seven, emperor, and a few other bosses). Probably could have done a full clear in about 3 and a half. I'd recommend the tank be at least level 54 or 55 after the fixes, since the pulls are quite large in some places.

Some thoughts on BRD as a whole, after running through it on a dps (warlock), a tank (warrior), and now a healer (shaman).
I have, overall, had some really good groups for this instance - but also have had some horrible, horrible groups that have made me hate the instance overall. In general, though, it is one of the best instances in the game, just because it is involving and the dynamics of the instance change from one area to another.
CC - Warlocks and Mages are both excellent cc for this instance, with plenty of things to banish and sheep. Even from the get-go, most of the cc is going to almost require mages or warlocks because of the huge pulls. With a level-requisite group (it actually is 48-58 for LFG queueing, I believe, maybe as high as 60), it's hard to go through this instance without more than one cc. A priest, I found as of tonight, is also really good cc for Mind Control - granted, the priest should not be the healer. A rogue is also good to have for sap, and hunters for freezing trap.
AoE - Lots of stuff to AoE in here, especially if you have a half-decent pally tank. Just about anyone can AoE, but mages and warlocks are still great for this. You have plenty of options, though, based on your group composition - Blizzard, Rain of Fire, Magma Totem, Explosive Trap, Holy Nova, Consecration, Thunderclap, Arcane Explosion, Hurricane, etc.
Multi-mob pulls - Especially as a druid or warrior tank, you get a LOT of experience multi-mob tanking here. I think that with my warrior, BRD was invaluable to my tanking experience. You're using just about every cooldown you can with almost every large pull, especially when you don't have a lot of cc, which tends to be the case more often than not (Murphy's Law and all that).
Healing - AoE healing is probably going to be the best here, so priests and shamans definitely shine in BRD (chain heal and prayer/circle of healing), but competent druids and paladins should also be able to manage just fine (mouseover macros ftw!). It is a very difficult instance to heal at any level, but may get exceedingly difficult without being at least level 50. Just remember to get your group to understand that you will need mana often, as some pulls can be incredibly stressful. We didn't get to do the bar, or the Seven, but had hit every boss before that (so, we still had Phalanx and every boss after that - though we did get Fineous and Incendious. Even then, though, there are many different routes one could take through BRD).
Tanking - Tanking BRD, as I said, was a good thing for me, in learning how to manage your aggro vs. other people's aggro. Remember that you, as a tank, should pull. There are a lot of LoS pulls, so using a ranged attack (bow/gun/thrown for warriors, avenger's shield for paladins, feral faerie fire or moonfire for druids) and backing around a corner is one thing that you really need to learn well. Again, this instance will probably be increasingly difficult without being level 50+, but also not having your 41-point talent will probably prove to be more devastating than not.
DPSing - DPSing this instance is entirely reliant on having your tank establish aggro. There are certain cases (particular cc/los pulls) where this changes, but for the most part, Pyroblast when your tank has missed is a very, very bad thing. BRD really is a huge pve "l2p" tutorial for just about every class out there, from cc to tanking to dpsing to just general group coordination.
There are also some really good drops for each kind of class - including a druid idol, and really good pally/shaman healer items (not to mention an ele shaman boots). It's something to definitely consider, as some of the items may last into Outland (most, maybe not, but some of the stuff may be a little more difficult to replace, such as the druid idol).

Does anyone know what opens or closes the giant door at the end of the Dark Iron Highway that leads to Incendius?
I run BRD regularly for Large Brilliant Shards. There are times when I will kill Bael'Gar and then run down the Highway to kill Incendius, but the giant door is not open. There are other times when it is open... but I can't determine what causes it to be open or shut.
Anyone know? By the way, I'm not referring to the gate that requires the Shadowforge Key... I'm referring to the giant 5 story door that blocks the way to Incendius at the opposite end of the DI Highway from Bael'Gar.

How do you do the torch room. I had a really good grp we cleared everything with no wipes but there were a few deaths here and there. My was me lvl 53/54 pally tank(me), lvl 52 ret pally, lvl 56/57 druid healer. lvl 53/54 moonkin and a 55 aff lock. We didnt have much trouble up until the torch it was the first time most of had gotten that far but we wiped twice there and our healer broke all his stuff. So back to my question how do you do the torch room?
btw: The first one we all died but i did Divine Intervention on the moonkin so he lived but I still considered it a wipe.

You have to kill two Shadowforge Flame Keepers (

). Loot their torches and activate both braziers to open the door. Braziers are near them.

If you haven't been to The Bar in BRD I suggest you make a trip. It has been upgraded.
There is a band that plays every night at 8pm server time (there is a drumset set up and everything!), there is also a Season 4 Arena Vendor, Griz Gutshank, with 2 Gnoll bodyguards named Slobbermouth and Snaggletooth. Both of whom are wielding the Season 4 2h Mace.
Griz Gutshank also sells the PvP Gems regularly purchased with honor for arena points. 800 points each.
I'm still waiting for the band to come on, about 15 minutes to go, I will update once I hear them play, should be excellent!

also how u do it most effective is run straight to middle...kill 1st flame keeper n then run to left hand side brazier to doze , why this is ...u need rest break for ur aoe also from left hand side u can most easy spot 2nd flame keeper , which u kill n flame right hand side brazier...
also when u kill magmus ...let all ur group get to him n hug solid wall to avoid aoe firecannons on walls

there is also a brew master standing behind plugger and you can get a drink from him... not something that goes in your bag though... kind of like:
talk to npc, get buff
Right. Time to tell:
You drink beers with him. You get him tipsy. You'll then make him extremely drunk, and fall. (iirc)
Then he should drop a mug on the ground, near the kettle.

I'm amazed that it hasn't been mentioned as yet (although I may have very well missed it amongst 40+ comments) but I can't stress enough to all you lovely rogues and kitty druids out there that
THE HOUNDS CAN SEE YOU!
Sorry....I really don't mean to sound abraisive but I simply couldn't get this point across last night in three seperate pug groups. It's mind blowing to watch a rogue stealth and dash into a group, only to come running out with 5+ mobs on his tail, catch and pull a 5 man patrol, and bring all hell down on your group.
Now some people may say that a tank can handle this, and I'll agree to a point; but I'm a lvl 51 druid tank, and 10+ unexpected mobs is never a happy time.
Stealthers out there, please please please for the love of Thrall listen to your tank. They're not trying to make your lives difficult (most of the time), they're just trying to save the group.

Additional notes I haven't quite noticed as yet, and possibly some helpful tips for those brave enough to get to the end of this wretched hell hole (I think I'm wellw ithin rights to refer to it as such seeing as it is a flaming fiery pit *grin*)
Alright....you've killed off as many bosses as you possibly could, you've gone through every other part of the dungeon, you open these large solid doors and....
WHAMMY!
Dwarf central.
Most groups panic.
If you're fortunate enough to have one of the few with you who has already attempted and succeeded at reaching the King, then kudos to you, chances are you don't need what I'm about to say. If you happen to be someone who has never attempted this before, before you run off and Jenkins the entire place allow me to shed some light.
1. The groups respawn here continuously until you light the torches
2. There are several large patrolling groups that could mean an insta-wipe if you're not careful, mark their position and track their movement to avoid them at all points!
3. Due to the respawn you must keep moving, this means little to know drink time, ready up your potions and just try and move through the room as quickly as possible.
4. If you have a rogue or a druid in your party, toss lead to them and have them stealth and mark the torch bearers, this makes life so much easier as you progress through the room as you'll have a much better idea of where you're going.
With that said you should be well prepared to at least attempt this area.
Soulstones will not buy you a second chance due to the fact that the mobs will respawn before your healer can soulstone and rez anyone.
Use druids battle res if in the occassion that your healer goes down.
After everything has been marked (torch bearers as well as large patrolling armies) find your best path and stick to it. Torches have a 5 minute timer, which means that between killing/looting a torch bearer, and actually reaching and lighting a torch you can take no longer than 5 minutes. If you miss your mark the torch bearer will respawn, at which point you'll simply have to move backwards and grab him again.
Each torch is guarded by an elite fire elemental that shouldn't do much more than get in the way. Whoever does loot the bearer should shout out when they have the torch and upon reaching the pedestal they need to make lighting the torch a priority, everyone else tackle the mobs, that one person hit the torch.
Anyways that's my $.02 I know very few people actually run this place in full anymore, but for those who would like to those are my suggestions.

I spent literally ALL night (from around 1:30 AM or so to around 6:00 AM) in BRD with a 70 prot pally and a 70 mage (not sure what spec). I am a prot pally as well but I was given the task of keeping them alive as the 70 pally had a tendency to bite off more than he could chew, so to speak. Personally, it was hell. We wiped many times. Perhaps my bad first experience has ruined it for me but in my opinion, I'd rather just skip it. Even so, it is a must at least once for everyone. And when you see all those arena spectators and such, make sure you smack a few. Hehehe.
Warning: Gratuitous 'smacking' of arena spectators may cause a wipe.

BRD is a hard instance mabye... its the lenght and even if u use shortcut it can still take 2-3 hours. now if you wanna finish it fast but true wich takes 2-3 hours there are rules.
1 choose the right way! if you have the key take a shortcut if not go to the arena. do this and go on. now there is a lever down a stair in the next room. use this (you ened to clear some mobs) then u go not to the room over the arena but the hallway next to there. now youa re at the right way. kill your way until the grim guzzeler and you are in!
2 aggro palanax to get trough the door. you either try to kill a mob there. if that dont work then u gotta pick pocket the bar man or someone else and get the key to the door. mind that a pat will come now. after you have dont this you come to the even worse part.
3 if you have a 70 in grp bring it now! there are grp of 20 non elites with a realy low hp each. aoe is needed. they hit weak and have little hp, but they are so damn many and respawn like rats. we had a 70 lock but here is the tactic. kill ur way to one of the torches you find in the inner parts of the room. kill the elite u find there and this will be your base. then you will need to search for the fire keepers. they are red i tthink and will ve randomly around the big room. mind that your base willb e aggrod all the time by respawns. after you have found one. make a rush (we didnt try this we had a 70) but try to get a rogue to pickpocket him. if this dont work u gotta fight ur way there and kil him and light the torch in your homebase with the item he drop. now move on to the next torch and repeat.
4. the next boss is a tank and spank. but a well geared tank and healer is very much needed here. the problem is the fires that spawn of the walls and kill you. you will prob wipe so rein and SS is very handsome here.
5 the boss. here you gotta clear the whole room before you start at the boss. when you aggro him heel go and is pretty much tank and spank. he have the princes of IF with him wich also is needed to be tanked since she cast spells like a rat.
he will use a abilty wich enlarges him. he will hit harder and deal dmg to everyone that hit him. so everyone stop attacking him. building aggro for princess is a gd idea here. then main dps him down. he is qquite easy when u get the hang of it.

Running Blackrock Depths (all bosses, for quests, look them up individually)
Assumes you do NOT start with a Shadowforge key, and thus need to get one.
0) (Pre instance)
Get yourself killed anywhere near blackrock mountain at level 48 or higher (if you're questing in the area, some level 80 will eventually come by and gank you) Go into blackrock mountain as a ghost, and cross the big chain on the north side, enter the chambers beneath the blackrock depths summoning stone, and talk to Forgewright to get the legacy quest. Remember to talk to him twice. Also, look up and start as many of the pre-instance quest chains as you can. There is a LOT to do in the instance. See the individual quest descriptions for information on how to complete them.
1) Bosses off the entry area
Clear the first big room of mobs. Take the first tunnel to the right of the entrance (going in) and clear the first loop. Alternately, you can go down the center if you don't want to have to clear all the mobs on the loop. Kill High Interrogator Gerstahn at the back of the loop to get the cell door key. Finish any quests involving the cells that you have. Next, when you have finished the first loop, proceed to the next loop, starting at the Second tunnel you get to on the right hand wall as you come out of the first loop (You're basically doing a big "Figure 8" to clear both loops) - Be sure to kill Houndmaster Grebmar at the lower gear area, and Lord Roccor the patrolling elemental. When you have finished the second loop, enter the big empty-looking arena on your right to proceed to:
2) Ring of Law
If you want to go directly here, skipping the houndmaster and Interrogator, proceed to the third tunnel to your left from the entrance at the first big room. Get the entire group inside the room before starting the event. To start the event, one character must walk to the center of the arena. The group should reposition themselves to keep the agro off the casters and healers as each wave comes in. After two waves of non-elite mobs, a random boss will spawn. Once that boss is defeated, the gate will open to...
3) The East Garrison.
Clear the mobs in here, and double back up the ramp next to the tunnel you enter from. It leads back to the viewing area above the arena. Lots of non elites here with a few elites mixed in. Kill em all and exit at the other side, to get to...
4) The Dark Coffer.
First, turn right and kill Pyromancer Loregrain to clear the statue area. Then head the other direction to the bank. Clear the dwarves from the rooms above, then proceed downstairs to the bank. Kill Warder Stilgliss and Open the Dark Keeper Portrait to the left of the door leading into the vault and look at the plaque to spawn the Dark Keeper. Assuming that you have enough keys by now, open all of the relic vaults to spawn Watchman Doomgrip and activate the guardians. Open the secret treasure. When you defeat the Dark Keeper and get the Dark Coffer key, come back here to loot the coffer. Next, proceed across the southhern rampart-bridge, and down the tunnel to kill Fineous Darkvire and/or Dark Keeper Uggel, if he was the one who spawned. Those who need to can now double back to the statue where you killed Pyromancer Loregrain and use the hammer on the statue to get the Shadowforge Key. This is a good time to kill Dark Keepers Zimrel or Pelver (in the arena spectator area, or the tunnel leading to Pyromancer Loregrain's area, respectively.) Once you're done with these objectives, proceed past Darkvire to...
5) Black Anvil and Bael'Gar.
This is basically a straight shot. Kill Lord Incendius and proceed down the tunnel to the end for Bael'Gar. By now you should have the Shadowforge Key, so take the tunnel back towards the entrance, opening the gates with the Shadowforge key to return to...
6) East Garrison, Part Deux, and the West Garrison to Golem Lord Arglemach.
If you had the Shadowforge key to start with, you can skip straight to here, if you want to skip the Dark Coffer or go back for it later. Go to the big gear on the lower level, and use the Shadowforge Key on the device blocking the gear from turning. This will close the Humungous Door (TM) that leads from Lord Incendius to Bael'Gar, thus opening the way from the East Garrison to the West Garrison via the tunnel on the upper level of the Eastern Garrison. Clear the area, and kill General Angerforge and/or Dark Keeper Ofgut. Then head north and clear all the gnomes and golems from the next room, then kill Golem Lord Arglemach. Finally, proceed across the bridge over the lava, guarded by fire elementals to...
7) Grim Guzzler.
Sell stuff at the bartender, kill Dark Keeper Vorfalk if he's the one who spawned. Easiest way to get out is to buy 6 ale mugs from the barkeep and talk to Rocknot, giving him the ale mugs 2 at a time. He'll go mess with the kegs and accidentally break down the exit door. If you plan on coming through a lot, you can do the Love Potion quest for the succubus waitress and, next time you come back and every time thereafter, you can just talk to her and get her to open the door. Alternately, a rogue can pick the barkeeps pocket to get the door key. Once you get through the door, it's on to...
8) Ambasador Flamelash.
Keep the little fire elementals away from him and he's a fairly easy boss. Hang a left turn to...
9) The Golem Foundry.
Clear the golems and Casters...no bosses here, but the mages occasionally drop some cool eyepatches for those who want to talk like a pirate. Arrr! Head on through the next doorway to:
10) The Seven Dwarves.
Miners who brought the necessary tribute, talk to Gloom'rel (Second Dwarf on the right) to get Smelt Dark Iron. Then, go to the far end and talk to the dwarf there to challenge the seven dwarves to battle. They agro on you at about one minute intervals, and they're fairly tough. There won't be much time to rest between them either, so be ready with some mana potions and healing potions. After beating them down, the next door unlocks to...
11) Entrance to Molten Core
The black forge is a little cave-looking thing in the lava flow at the end of the smaller bridge. The molten core entrance and the core fragement you need for Attunement to the Core are across the large one. Once you finish your business here, unlock the next door to get to...
12) The Lyceum
Don't even think about trying to clear this room...it can't be done. The dwarves respawn very quickly. Best bet is to work your way around the edges of the room, keeping in a very tight group. Have good agro-grabbers to keep the dwarves off the casters. Light the two big braizer-torches after killing their guardians to unlock the door to...
13) Magmus and the throne room
Ta Da! You have successfully navigated Blackrock Depths.
X) Shortcuts
There are numerous shortcuts in BRD. For example:
You can jump through a window in the East garrison onto a ledge and then down onto the pathway between Bael'Gar and the black anvil.
You can jump into the lava at the black anvil or at Ambasador Flamelash and hop-skip-jump north to the islands in the lava (better have an agro-dump ability) This gets you past without having to fight the seven dwarves to smelt dark iron.
The Shadowforge key can bypass a lot.
(Edit: Got Flamelash and Foundry backwards. Sorry.)

Last time we went to Blackrock Depths cause we wanted to go to Molten Core. The instance difficulty was set to Heroic but someway we entered, then MC didnt let us in cause it was set to Heroic and we had to Heartstone and go again.

Shadowforge Key is NOT necessary to enter...
When you get in, there is the door that needs the key, and there is a hallway, where you can just go through...
From there, you can acess the rest of the instance, except for the last 6 bosses (the total bosses are 22) which are from lvl 57-59...
If your tank is less than lvl 57, don't go to the last 6 bosses, because you simply won't make it...
Even with 1 lvl 60 healer, and 3 lvl 60 DPS, if the tank is less than 57, you will die, no matter what, especially in the room before Magmus, where you have to kill 2 mobs that drop some torches, while mobs are respawning 5 seconds after they die...
So, if you want to kill the last bosses too, you'd better get a good tank, with patience and understanding.
Last time I did it, tank was lvl 62, rest were 57-58, and I was 55 (healer) ...
We did everything so easy, that I barely did 1 regrowth to the tank after each boss...
But before Magmus, where those little creepy things spawn... we underestimated them, and got wiped 5-6 times before the tank left...
So if you want to get the achievement, find a good tank and a good healer to do it, some CC would also be nice...

If you have any plans at all later. Do not start this instance. I have personally not finished this instance with a full group after 3 hours. I recommend getting the key. Going theough the non-key areas. Then going back the next day for the key-only areas.

A very well geared and skilled warlock looking for a challenge is able to solo most of the trash here. It's rough at points, but thoroughly enjoyable.
Level 54 warlock with 215 spell power, 3000ish HP/Mana, (as you can see, VERY well geared) and the Voidwalker Glyph make this place a fun ride. I'm affliction, so I imagine Demonology would have an easier time keeping their Void alive. I haven't tried any bosses though. It's also a nice opportunity to brush up on your threat management skills in high stress situations with more than one mob involved.
No need to say it, but this is a fantastic way to grind experience if you're bored with quests. Being rested can get you 1600-1800 experience on the elites.

This is a very long instance indeed, but a very fun one too. I ran this last night for 3 hours and another half with a very decent group. We only got 1 wipe at Emperor gauntlet event and that was all. We downed every boss and it was a very fun experience. It was more of a raid dungeon. I wish it was a raid dungeon in old times ( maybe it was I can't remember I never did a full run of BRD in 2005 or 2006). Our group was Paladin Tank, Mage (me), Warlock, Priest and Hunter.

For achi hunters, this can be done under one hour with l80, even without shadowforge key.
this one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjuWgUxJ9ZA
will lead you almost to Lord Incendius.
Then jump down swim to the bridge, go up and you will be next to the Lyceum.
If you have shadowforge key just go to the left to highway and directly to Lord Incendius.

"They don't make 'em like this anymore"
On my lvl 53 pally I ran through this yesterday with a nice group. We moved a good pace and downed 10 bosses. Today however, I was not so lucky. My group was...blehh.
This is the first instance where player skill begins to matter.
One full clear with all 20-some-odd bosses down will gain a full level, and likely much more. Twice that on double exp =D
Wrath of the lich king needs more five mans like this. 3 / 4 boss instances are simple....blackrock depths has something new to learn even after 20+ runs.
great content

Excellent instance, this was really fun.
Reading the posts above was very helpful, particular in finding the torches.
Our group consisted of an 80 hunter BM specced, and a 80 mage arcane specced - wiped once, as we went straigth for Emperor Thaurissan, not noticing the plethora of mobs in the room, killed almost all of them before wiping so took the last ones when we got back.

Heh never noticed this before but on the wall on the right when you enter The Grim Guzzler is hiding a picture of Ragnaros, you have to be parallel looking towards the entrance on the wall so see it.

I did this with a 70 feral drood pre WotLK lol. Full run, took maybe an hour and a half but he was full T6 at the time. It'd be so cool in this place if the mobs stayed dead and friendly npc's spawned :D new city loloololololol but seriously, when this place is cleared and in the later parts of the instance, it really seems if it was a city that a massive Ally raid took down.

If u are going to run here with a group at the instance lvl, be prepared to spend some time:) This instance is massive! But it sure is a place for a nice, long and challanging adventure! Loads of Bosses to take down, loads of areas to explore, and much more for the ones that wants to test their skills :)

I was pretty confused on how to get to the instance. But. Rez when have Pt.2 of the shadowforge key quest, run down past the giver and down to the chain over the lava. Head down that chain and go to the MC attunement giver. right before him is a passage to a large quarry area. Go through that until you are able to turn right at the masonry, follow that tunnel to the instance portal.

Lol. In the ring of justice, after killing Ok'Thor, 4 of our group members (including me) got trapped in his cage because he killed him inside it. The one outside brought us some enemies so we could die or have the two warriors use charge to get out, but sadly we engaged in combat so quickly we could not use charge, and we easily killed them. Oh and the person locked outside died...
So DO NOT EVER . in the ring of justice, kill them inside the cage.

Currently still the largest instance in the game, if I am not mistaken (at least, 5-man).
This quest was one of the endgame 5-mans for Vanilla WoW. It's one of my favorite instances - it has everything from rooms full of hostile dwarves to labyrinths of hallways to a bar where, get this, the enemies aren't hostile (initially).
The downside is it takes a very long time to fully clear, but it's worth every last second you spend.
You do
not
need the Shadowforge Key to enter, but to get to the last few rooms it's a requirement.

A rogue with sufficient Lockpicking skill can get through most (if not all) the doors. I'm 300 skill and haven't found a door yet that I can't pick in BRD :)

Just wanted to add that a good warlock makes BRD his playground. It makes a run go so much smoother with one. They can banish the elementals, making it so much easier on groups, and they can enslave the demon dog near the vault, making that fight, and the one right after with all the golems a piece o cake. Then all the obvious benefits you get from a warlock - SS, Healthstones, Summons, all that.

I have been looking for a guide, that explains how to deal with the events before Thaurissan, and Thaurissan himself. Though i found lots of tips for Thaurissan i didnt get to see him still. Problems were the huge room with fast respawns, and then thereafter the lesser problem (Magmus).
Huge Room: Have a Druid or Rogue look for the Flame Keepers and kill them (he has to be very quick).
During he is engaged with the flame keepers, the 4 other go for the groups. This will only work with decent AoE, like a mage with iAE or a lock with imp. Hellfire. A priest wont do the job good, his AE isn't cheap enough. Everyone should have bread, water (lv55) and potions ready. Kill the elementals @ the Fireplaces in the eastern half of the room. You'd best go for the one in the soth first. The rouge/druid now should have returned with the torches, placing the first. Then quickly go north, to the 2nd fireplace also taking down the elemental (with the mage/lock focusing on AoE (lol)) and place the torch. This has to be done within 3 minutes after the first torch was placed or you will wipe.
When the 2nd torch was placed, you have done the hard part. Go into the hall east to you.
Magmus: There is no difficulty in the boss hisself, but in the Environment. There are statues, that will breathe fire dealing DoT of about 200 fire damage per 2 seconds. The wall is separated into black sections by white pillars, and the statues only will appear only every 2nd section. Also, in each section there are either no statues, or statues on both sides.
There are now two possibilities:
Have your Warrior tank him 2 sections in front of the ranged dds/healers, or have him tanked in the same section where all other ppl are. In either of the situations, everyone is supposed to check, if the fire cone reaches him, and if so, step aside. Then its an easy kill.
Thaurissan: The mobs in front of him are to be killed. They are eays trash-mobs most of which arent even elite.
Now ask if anyone has the Thaurissan quest. If so have your tank Mortal Strike (hope he isnt def-specced :>) the Emperor, if he aint got that one it will be a harder kill. Dont touch the princess or the quest will fail. After quite a short time, the princess will turn against the priest. He now only has to heal hisself, sometimes shielding the others. U'd best have a shaman/paladin or druid now heal the group - or you will have to burst-damage the emperor - which in our attempt first took the priests, then the warriors, then the rogues and after the hunters life - leaving only me to kite the emperror until he would not be immune to magi anymore - aye he sometimes turns immune to magic. If he does, he also grows in size.
If noone has the quest, first kill the princess, then kill thaurissan.
I will be updating the guide with images when i next kill him.
our group was: 60 mage, 60 rouge, 60 hunte, 57(entered with 56) warrior, 57 priest.

To enter the instance at all, you must be level 40, otherwise it won't let you in. Going in at level 40 is useless, as finding a group is beyond unlikely, and doing anything basically impossible.

This is probably the last dungeon you should be running pre-Outland. After this point, the gear isn't worth the time for instancing, at it's only a matter of levels until your gear gets replaced. I know that there are special cases (i.e. mount quests, dungeon armor sets, etc.), but don't waste your time with stuff like DM or Scholo... just isn't worth it.

I guess I am one of the rare ones who LOVES BrD. lol. I have been ther 26 times in the last 5 days. I have dinged from Level 53 thru 58 inside there. Just today i went there 7 times in a row then did stratholme and finally 4 of us just went to blackrock Spire for kicks n did pretty good for a 4 man group i must say. Myself ( Lvl 58) warriors, lvl 55 warrior, lvl 54 pally n lvl 51 priest. In those 26 trips of mine, I was grouped with various combinations. The Best combination I found to be 3 warriors 1 paly and 1 priest - man trust me.. we kicked serious BRD butt. Our favourite priest happens to be lvl 51, we tried a few others lvl 56 and lvl 62 but they sucked. This guy was like an angel from heaven - there is never a moment I have even looked at my health bar when he's around. If my health went below half, that would mean he was dead. I know the place like the palm of my hand now :) I stopped questing at level 56 i think - theyre too complicated and being a working man - I cant possibly take time out to go thru the headache of figuring out things instead of leveling - so I generally only do quests people share inside the instance. Also, the reason I liked BRD is it doesnt feel like a grind - its like a survivor episode in there. When u come out you're 25% higher xp than when u went in each trip - my 26 trips got me from 53 to 58 and now I'll do Blackrock Spire a bit n head to outlands. I have been lucky to get angerforges axe and the fiery wrath polearm. i only use them on lower level enemies but they look uber cool!

To address a few of the past posts:
No, you don't need anything to enter BRD. There is no key, or process for it.
To get to it, enter Blackrock Mountain, and go to the top of the circle. You'll see some chains that lead down to an area in the center of the mountain. There's a small ramp up to one of the chains, so go up that, and run down the chain. Then follow the doors and paths down around to the bottom. There is a second chain, and be careful not to fall off the ledges. When you get to the bottom, you'll see a guy in a little cutout. He's the guy for MC, so turn around, take a few steps back, and there's a door that goes inside. Pretty much head straight after you get in there, and after a few mobs, you'll see a pathway, like a bridge almost. There's a patroling fire elemental (who is the objecet of a quest, if you have it), but the instance entrance is at the end of that lane, on your right.

This is possibly the most "Totally Changed" instances since TBC came out. People HATED running it, because it took five or six hours to do, and people would leave, and new people would arrive, and items were easy to ninja.
Now, in the year 2007, three or four Lv.70s go in with a Lv.52, and slaughter the entire instance, every last monster, in two hours. The drops are very good, and if you know where you're going and the quickest routes to each boss, you can clear them all in under an hour. Lv.60 players used to tear through Scarlet Cathedral in a similar way, and now, you can practically solo the instance if you have enough time.
Other major instances for some nice gear for your Lv.50-60 friends can come from the Baron runs in UD Stratholme. A Lv.70 Warrior and Priest can duo the whole thing, and add in a Lv.70 mage or something to do it in about 20 minutes.
In any case, all the people who said they hate this instance and want it to burn in hell, now have the chance at Lv.70 to group up, help out lower level friends, and BURN THE HELL HOLE TO THE GROUND!
It's fun :D

i ran BRD with a good group
56 loc
57 warrior
53 hunter (i believe)
52 mage (me)
62 druid (balence spec, but healer)
we made it to the bar, smashed the kegs and beat the boss that comes in, and then went up stairs. the loc died and while we were waiting for her to get back, i accidnetly pulled the dwarf guy walkin around talking about beer, and we had to kill him. when we did, the whole bar became a prison. all the non aggro mobs sittin at the tables wena aggro, and we were stuck in the corner. the warrior threw a knife at 1 of the drunks and the whole bar attacked us and we wiped and gave up D:.
moral of the story kids: NEVER attack the widdle cute dwarf as a sure wipe will be apon you unless your group is ready to face about 20 shadow mages and 20 warriors at once.
ouch.

BRD is without question my favorite instance of all time. Why?
1) it is fricken huge
2) it has a lots of quests
3) it has a good story
4) it has good drops
5) it has lots of challenging pulls
Before you go, here is some advice:
1) Do all the quests you can in Badlands, Searing Gourge, and Burning Steppes. There are many quest chains that feed into BRD. You can have like 9 quests in your log going in.
2) Recognize that for various reasons you CANNOT do it all in one run. If you are in a PUG that is doubly so. Pick 2 or 3 quests that are near each other and do them.
3) A large section of BRD practially requires the Shadowforge Key, which is a quest reward. The quest is picked up from a ghost in the center section outside the instance when you are dead. Make sure everybody picks it up on the first wipe. :)
4) Most of the dwarf pulls are 4 or 5 mobs, often with a healer and ranged attacker. If your group is around the intended level (about 55) you will get creamed if you don't use crowd control, keep aggro off the healer, and prevent runners.
5) The fire elementals do HUGE damage. Banish or kill them first every time they are in a pull.
6) On your second or third run you might have the quest to kill the main boss. (Save the princess.) You must get through the the Lyceum, which is amazingly hard compared to all dungeon content in the game up to this point, IMO. Unless you have some high levels or veterans in your group you are going to wipe many times. Sorry. Google it.
As mentioned in other posts above, this instance is solo-able and quite fun at 70.

If you have a lock in your group remind him to cast level one curse of recklessness on any and all humanoid enemies as they get low on health. For 35 mana you will prevent pulling another mob and save yourself many wipes.

Alright, I've spent WAY to much time trying to find the dmn bar and get to the other half of the instance. Read below for help:
You will need to have the Shadowforge Key to get to the bar. Once you enter the instance, go left through the Gate and right again through the second gate. You'll see the Garrison door on your left along the wall. Enter there. Staying on the lower level, you'll have to get to the big gear lock on the far side of the room.
Head upstairs and go to the left. You'll head down a passageway that will become very narrow and you'll cross over the gate through the door you just opened with the big gear.
Once you come to a bigger room, you'll want to turn right and head north into the Manufactory. In there, keep to the right and head east through Shadowforge City. You should see 4 Fireguard Destroyers on the bridge. Past them is the "bar,
" aka the Grim Guzzler.
Good luck!

Well most of you people actually HATE the lyceum.
But, my friend mage found another use!
Get yourself a pair of Invisibility Potions and Swiftness Potions, and use invisibility at the right spots. Right spots are: When you enter, take first door to the right, take the highway, jump to lava after the corridor with elementals, swim to the bridge, to your right. If you're an engineer with Seaforium charges, are a rogue, or have the key, open the door. If you're not, relog and as soon you login press up. It works.
Ok, here's the trick.
Get aggro from a group, AOE AOE AOE AOE AOE AOE AOE AOE AOE AOE AOE AOE AOE AOE AOE AOE AOE AOE AOE AOE AOE, Drink sticked to the wall.
If you have enough mana, it's 48 to 60 in about 2 or 3 days with this crazy exp method!

Ok, I'll make something clear to prevent other people to go trough my BRD-run; spend 3 hours trying to figure out how to do it, not sure wether you need that famous shadowforge key or not, and wasting a lot of time.
To do the ENTIRE dungeon you NEED the SHADOWFORGEKEY. Just to make clear. The quest for the key can be obtained only when you're dead, so in ghostform. Theres a ghost in that tomb you encounter on your way to the entranceportal. Quest is easy enough.
The 2 first gates to open are also easy to find but the 3th thing you need to open isn't a door nor a gate...it's a mechanism in the room on the lower level of the east garrison door.
Hope this can save ppl some time

Why are there no proper descripition of how to get to BRD? Everyone just say "go down the chain" but what the heck... there are a loads of chains! Here's how I do to get to the instance:
1. Enter Blackrock mountain (if you are coming in from Burning Steppes, then go to the side of the big circular room where the entrance from Searing Gorge is ((to the north))).
2. Standing with your back to the entrance from Searing Gorge. Go to the left until you see a small stone in front of you. Go up on that and go up to the chain that is connected to the stone.
3. Follow the chain over the lava, to the stone in the middle of the big circular room.
4. You will see two doors. Take the left and go through the tomb (there is only one way, no mobs) until you reach the door out of the tomb.
5. Follow the path to the right, precisly outside the door. (You are still on the big stone in the middle of the circular room).
6. When reaching a chain that is CONNECTED to the stone, go up on it and follow it over the lava until you reach the end. You will see a NPC with a quest. Then follow the corridor to the right until you come to a big cave with working and patrolling dwarfs - now look at your mini-map - there's only one way (left, right, entering another room, then forward) to go now. You'll now see the entrance!
This sounds complicated but it really isn't! Good luck!

Easiest to get to actually- just hard to find. Go through the Ring of Law (the little arena you get locked in and are forced to fight). After the fight, take the exit and when you get to the top of the hallway, take a couple steps out and turn around. You'll see the stairs leading upwards to the spectator area. You should find it just off to the right up there, following a few mobs.

You need:
mage (55+)
or
Good lock (58+)
or
Epic Warrior with nice 2h(60)
and
Good healer
and
A lot of luck
Just keep going when you kill one pack (20ish mobs with not much hp) and continue to the next mob, since they respawn fast (30secs or so). Kill the so called "Flame keepers" and loot the flame thingy they drop. You need to keep going like this until you come to one of the 'stage' thingys where there is a 53-55 elite fire elemental on top. Kill him and put the flame keeper loot on the fire. Keep doing this until you have lit all the 4 (think it is 4) fires. Then door will open. Fight your way to the door. Here is the first time for you to rest. Next room there should be only normal trash mobs, next up is Emperor.
Hope this helps.
