Stats are a key component when customizing your Unholy Death Knight in World of Warcraft--having the right combination of them can be crucial to your performance.
In this guide, we will detail the best stat priority for your Unholy Death Knight, as well as provide explanations covering how to determine Unholy Death Knight stat priorities personalized for your character in , as well as how to check if a piece of gear is BiS, upgrade or just bad for you.
Besides talking about your Unholy Death Knight stat priority, we will also cover your stats in-depth, explaining nuances and synergies for niche situations that go beyond a generic Unholy Death Knight priority.

Unholy DK Stats
Strength is your primary stat, and is found on plate gear. Strength increases your attack power and damage done with abilities.
For secondary stats, Unholy DKs have the following:
Critical Strike
: Chance for your damaging abilities to deal 200% damage.
Haste
: Increases attack speed, reduces the global cooldown, and increases your Rune regeneration.
Mastery
: Increases the shadow damage you deal as well as the damage from your minions, through
精通:恐惧之刃
.
Versatility
: This is an all-around stat. Increases damage dealt, healing received, and reduces damage taken
Best Stats for Unholy DKs
Strength is again the best stat for the Unholy Death Knight. The secondaries change slightly depending on situations!
Single Target
The generic stat priority is the following:
Strength
Mastery
Haste
Crit
Versatility
Strength >> Mastery >= Haste > Crit = Vers
Unholy primarily focuses on Mastery and Haste as their secondary stats, pretty much trying to get up to 5.5k raw stats on each. We then allocate the rest to Crit and get as little Vers as possible. The exact raw amounts of Mastery and Haste matters a lot to us as we are running the ]. The trinket provides a good chunk of our current highest secondary stat (by raw amount) meaning we need to be careful how much raw stats we have! The optimal stat to proc is generally Mastery, which is why Mastery is our top stat. You should aim to keep Haste close to Mastery still, as it's also very much valuable! The ideal distribution is therefore to have Mastery as your top raw stat with Haste close behind it!
Some further notes on ] as this trinket makes us think extra carefully about our raw stats. Any trinket that provides some
raw
stats can impact what Mirror triggers. This includes ], ] and ] in Season 3. Usually, you just need to mindful that these can proc early in your rotation and mess up your stats. Setting up your secondaries so that this cannot happen can be beneficial, like ensuring your Mastery stays sufficiently far ahead of your Crit with ] equipped (trust sims here as getting crit for mirror outside of the opener isn't terrible)! Furthermore, with ] you want to get your Mastery between 1 and 2 stacks of Haste above Haste to ensure the trinket doesn't give a proc early and mess up your opener! At 487 this will be around 200 Haste. Interestingly enough, non-lusted burst windows actually prefer Haste as the proc from Mirror! This increases the value of ] as it can stack up after your opener and provide that valuable Haste at the next 3 minute burst window.
AoE
In AoE, all of our stats are generally incredibly valuable, You should probably still have more of some, but, well-balanced stat distributions will always be better than putting too much into any one of them!
Strength
Mastery
Crit
Haste
Versatility
Strength >> Mastery = Crit = Haste >= Vers
Strength
: Increases all damage done by native class spells, abilities, and auto attacks. Importantly, it also increases the damage from our pets since they inherit our stats! Previously one of the weakest stats, but now much more impactful, making raw item level much more important again.
Haste
: Compresses the rotation by reducing both the GCD as well as increasing the proc rate of most spells and trinkets. Haste does not increase your DoT tick rate!
Critical Strike
: Increases damage done by abilities, auto attacks, and trinkets.
Mastery
: Increases your shadow and minion damage. Importantly, this only affects spells and abilities specific to the unholy death knight, not trinkets, potions, or other sources of potential shadow damage. The initial Mastery diminishing return kicks in at
68.4%
Versatility
: Increases damage done and reduces damage taken by half the amount. Unlike Mastery, however, it affects all damage done including trinkets, potions, and enchantments.
Pets and your Stats
Pets themselves contrary to popular belief, don't actually get some player stat buffs instantly, instead, the pets check the player's current stats on a server-side heartbeat, which happens every 5.25 seconds, and then update their current stats to match that of the player.
Stats that are affected by this are as follows; Haste, Critical Strike, Attack Power, and Spell Power. Mastery and Versatility are oddly, updated instantly when the player's stats change.
Since this heartbeat is constantly going in the background, we never actually know when it's going to happen pull to pull, sometimes it could be almost immediately after the player's stats change, other times it could be 5.25 seconds later. Thus, when planning on using your buff abilities (outside of Mastery and Versatility) if you don't currently know when the heartbeat is, you should assume it will take the average duration until the next heartbeat to apply. That average is 2.625 seconds after applying the buff to the player.
Pets summoned after a buff is applied, instantly get their benefit on being summoned, as they immediately grab the player's stats on being summoned.
符文腐蚀
and Haste
Just like the Rune regeneration rate,
符文腐蚀
's duration scales down linearly at the same rate with haste, at 0% haste, this is 3 seconds, at 100% haste, this is 1.5 seconds. Since this increases your Rune regeneration rate by 100% for that duration, at 0% haste this would result in a Rune regeneration rate of 10 / 2 ( 5 seconds ) for 3 seconds. Thus, if you have any Runes regenerating when this procs it would regenerate the equivalent of 6 seconds worth of Rune regeneration time in its 3-second duration. So in order to get the number of Runes regenerated by a proc of this, we would apply the formula
( 1 / 10 (rune regeneration rate) ) * ( (Runic Corruption Duration * (effective rune regeneration time)) - actual elapsed time (Runic Corruptions Duration) ) * number of runes regenerating = Runes generated by Runic Corruption.
While that may be a lot to take in, let's actually do the math for a 0% haste Runic Corruption proc with 3 Runes regenerating
( 1 / 10 ) * ( ( 3 * ) - 3 ) * 3 = 0.9 Runes
And what about 100% haste?
( 1 / 5 ) * ( ( 1.5 * ) - 1.5 ) * 3 = 0.9 Runes
Pretty simple right? And notice how the result is the same? This is a fancy little trick that Blizzard uses to make sure that we don't start generating just an absolute ton of Runes as we increase our haste.
Pawn Strings
This section is here for the sole purpose of discrediting general Pawn strings. If you choose to use this addon, you do not want to use a general pawn string taken from the internet. A pawn string depends strongly on your current stat distribution. Since the value of stats can drastically change as they increase and decrease, using some general weights taken from some arbitrary distribution is going to do you no good!
So how should you use the addon? You should simulate yourself. If you do a stat weight simulation on your character, the pawn string will appear in the output HTML file. You can then simply take that string and use it as your own! Remember to regularly simulate your character when you replace pieces of gear to keep your pawn string up to date!
I don't personally use Pawn or stat weights when considering upgrades, and this is for a simple reason. Those two tools only consider what happens when I
increase
the different stats. They do not consider the fact that I generally lose some other stat when I switch out an item. Because of this, what might seem like an upgrade from the viewpoint of pawn and stat weights, is actually not an upgrade at all. I use the "top gear" function of
raidbots.com
to simulate the best combination of gear from what I have available!

So I'm confused about the secondary stat penalty? I currently have 44% mastery (331 from gear) is that far too much or am I okay?

So i just came back to WOW (Shadowlands) and im building my DK (first time in 175 days /played, playing unholy) what % do i want my stats at? im Currently 184 ILvl my stats are 39% mastery, 18% crit, 12% hast, 2% versatility (I do 2.5k-5.5k DPS ATM). i know hast should be higher but what % should i get it to or is the sky the limit. if so should i only go Mastery/ hast items (like with legendarily's and craftable's with the Missives) ?

Mastery: Increases the shadow damage you do. Importantly, this is only spells and abilities specific to the unholy death knight, not trinkets or potions or other sources of potential shadow damage. The initial Mastery diminishing return kicks in at 68.4%
Mastery also and
extremely importantly
increases minion damage.
