The Heroes of the Storm "Echoes of Alterac" promotion runs from June 12th through July 9th. PST. As this is a WoW-centric event in Heroes of the Storm, we have compiled some beginner tips for WoW players looking to jump into Heroes of the Storm for the first time!
New Hero: Yrel
Yrel, the Light of Hope, is a Draenei Paladin who WoW players first encounter during the Assault on the Dark Portal, the first scenario players encounter while starting the Warlords of Draenor zones. On the quest
伊瑞尔
/
伊瑞尔
, players escort her to their main forces. Yrel then appears and accompanies the player through the entire Warlords of Draenor expansion.
Yrel is slated to be released in Heroes of the Storm on
June 12th
.
Backstory
Born on Draenor, on the sanctuary of the exiled Draenei, Yrel was dedicated to her faith. She does not remember much besides being raised by her older sister, Samaara - It is unknown what happened to their parents. Yrel grew up in the Temple of Karabor, and served as an acolyte. She showed great promised as a healer, to the point where the alternate universe's Prophet Velen noticed her talent. She was invited by him to trail has his pupil, where Velen began to teach her the value of leadership and sacrifice.
Yrel's peaceful life was shattered when the save Orc plans forged themselves into the Iron Horde, setting out to conquer Draenor. Yrel was captured and thrown into war.
Yrel is first encountered by the Azeroth expedition during their mission in
塔纳安丛林
, where she was being held by the Iron Horde as a slave in the Umbral Halls. She is discovered by an adventurer after she killed
堕落者安考瓦
in self-defense, the first time she ever took a life. After that, she joined Khadgar's group and helped Lady Liadrin heal the former Frostwolf and Draenei prisoners. After the Dark Portal was destroyed, she accompanied the Alliance and escaped to Shadowmoon Valley.
Afterward, she can be seen in
影月谷
, claiming Lunarfall to help the Alliance establish a Garrison, and re-encountered her sister, Samaara. After losing her sister due to her confrontation with Ner'zhul, leader of the Shadowmoon Orc Clan, Yrel promised to become strong in order to protect her people. When the alternate universe Prophet Velen sacrificed himself to thwart Ner'zhul's plans, he passed the mark on his head to her.
After many trials and tribulations, including the loss of Vindicator Maraad to protect her, Yrel rose to the position of Exarch and joined the Council of Exarchs. After Archimonde's defeat in Hellfire Citadel, Yrel thanks Khadgar and mentions she will help him if they ever need the people of Draenor. Yrel stays in the alternate timeline, vowing to see Draenor rebuilt.
In Battle for Azeroth, on the
Mag'har Orc Allied Race Recruitment Scenario
, it is revealed that Yrel became the High Exarch of the Lightbound, a group of fanatical Orcs and Draenei that worship the Light. It is revealed that the Lightbound are attempting to force everyone in Draenor to worship the Light, no matter the cost. Between those Lightbound Orcs, the Alternate Universe version of Garrosh Hellscream is supposed to become one. It does bring a interesting parallel to the Light in the main timeline, where the dangers of fanaticism have brought a balance between Light and Void.
We are with you, Geya'rah!
Cease this pointless defiance, mag'har! Stand down and welcome the Light!
Retreat while you still can! You will not force your doctrines upon us, draenei!
The High Exarch orders you to submit... or face judgment!
Enough talk! Let us be judged upon the field of battle!
For Draenor! For the mag'har!
The naaru offer us peace and order!
You mean subjugation!
Give up your hate! The Light can heal the scars of war!
Our scars are not yours to take!
This once-fertile land is now lifeless dust. That's what your hate has done!
Yrel... I have failed you...
Your High Exarch cannot save you. My people will never stop fighting until Draenor is free!
Come, champions of Azeroth. We must tell the warchief of our victory.
Yrel Spotlight
Blizzard
After their homeworld fell to demonic corruption, the Draenei found refuge on Draenor, and for a time, knew peace. Raised within the Temple of Karabor, Yrel served as an acolyte, until a mysterious stranger united the Orcs into a fearsome Iron Horde. Only through a chance meeting with the forces of Azeroth, was Yrel rescued from orcish captivity, and able to become a leader for her people. Now, in the Alliance's moment of need, Yrel comes to return the favor in the Nexus.
Yrel is a deliberate melee tank, whose heavyweight abilities reward investment and careful timing.
Each of her abilities is channeled, and gain strength as it charges up to maximum. Upon activating an ability, its target indicator begins to light up. New Map: Alterac Pass
Alterac Pass is a new Warcraft-themed map in Heroes of the Storm. This map is inspired on the battleground
奥特兰克山谷
.
Alterac Pass is slated to be released in Heroes of the Storm on
June 19th
.
Map Spotlight
Blizzard
A new realm has come to the Nexus, and with it, untapped power, and a bitter feud for control. Realm lords, factions and heroes will stop at nothing to claim victory in the mountains of Alterac.
Alterac Pass is a large 3-lane battleground that hosts the familiar warcries of long-time rivals, the Horde and the Alliance, as the clash in the Nexus. Unlike traditional Battlegrounds, Alterac Pass does not feature a structural Core at the Hall of Storms, but in its place, stand respected faction leaders for each side, General Vanndar Stormpike for the Alliance, and General Drek'thar of the Frostwolf Clan for the Horde.
Players must fight their way through traditional 14 keeps to find themselves face-to-face with their opposition's leader. If you want to claim victory, you'll have to bring them down.
Map Objectives
Instead of a traditional core, it's replacement is one of the traditional final bosses of Alterac Valley, Vanndar Stormpike and Drek'thar. Those NPCs will attack you, and like in the WoW battleground, running too far away from them will reset them. If they reset, they will run back to their starter position, and will immediately start regenerating health. The victory condition for this map is to successfully defeat the opposite General.
Like in the WoW Battleground, each General is bolstered. Except, instead of Warmasters, they're empowered by the 3 Keeps near them. Each Keep that is destroyed, reduces their damage done and increase their damage taken, by removing some of their armor. On their health bars, there is an indicator of how many Keeps are left standing to bolster them.
In the central part of the map, the main objective to help with your team's victory will spawn, in the form of two sets of prisoners for each team. To claim this objective for your team, you will need to defeat the prison guards that are guarding each cell and maintain control of the position while the prisoner attempts his escape. You also need to stop the enemy team from freeing their prisoner, requiring hefty amounts of teamwork to keep both areas under control. You can counteract the enemy freeing your prisoner by simply right-clicking to stop the freeing sequence, and channeling further to relinquish control of your prisoner back.
Successfully freeing a prisoner for your team will spawn a Cavalry Unit in every lane of the map, that will push at the enemy territory, and granting increased damage and movement speed for allied players and minions nearby. This cavalry unit will become stronger for each subsequent objective completion across the game.

Skins
Skins from Echoes of Alterac will be released on Heroes of the Storm on
June 19th
.
Although these skins are labeled Alliance and Horde, they are not limited to what choice you make on the Echoes of Alterac quest. You can earn them regardless of the side you chose!
For the Alliance!
Spirit Healer Auriel
Spirit Healers are impartial arbiters of life and death and it takes a considerable injustice for one to choose a side and go to war. Auriel's presence has granted a new hope to the Alliance.
Vanndar Muradin
After years of combat with the Frostwolves, Vanndar was among the first warriors Varian contacted as he rallied the Alliance. His invaluable experience may prove key to finally securing the pass from the Horde.
Grand Marshal Varian
Rallied by the Lady of Thorns call, Grand Mashal Varian Wrynn left Stormwind with his father's blessing and the Stormwind army in tow. The Alliance would not let Alterac fall before to the Raven Lord's machinations.
Nightslayer Valeera
While Valeera's allegiances may be her own, her friendship with Varian meant she couldn't allow him to go to war alone. If he was going to fight the Horde, than so she would be his blade in the dark.
For the Horde!
Sapper Junkrat
The mischievous Goblin Sappers are known throughout the Horde for their incredible aptitude for destruction. Despite their short life expectancy, some sappers like Jammi Foxxleson even became goblin engineers
.
Drek'thar Rehgar
The great Raven spirit had been right... The Alliance marched into Alterac with new allies and ready for war. While the spirit's strange power could aid him, to fight an army he would need allies.
High Warlord Garrosh
After decades of dutiful service to his warchief Thrall, Garrosh was appointed High Warlord and given a mission of vital importance to his mentor and friend: secure Alterac for the Horde once and for all.
Warsong Johanna
It is said that to face a Warsong Commander in battle is to experience the might of the Horde first-hand. Despite years of constant warfare, Jo'Hanna still charges into battle with a warcry that shakes the heavens.
Mounts
Mounts from Echoes of Alterac will be released on Heroes of the Storm on
June 19th
.
Although these mounts are labeled Alliance and Horde, they are not limited to what choice you make on the Echoes of Alterac quest. You can earn them regardless of the side you chose!

Do I have to spend money to play Heroes of the Storm?
Heroes of the Storm is free to install and free to play.
When you first log onto Heroes of the Storm, you will be prompted to complete a
Basic Tutorial
, which teaches you the basic mechanics of the game for each of the main roles, as well as how battlegrounds work. When you finish the Tutorial, you are given the choice of one of three Warcraft heroes permanently for free:
Jaina
,
Muradin
, or
Tyrande
.
Afterward, you will be offered a
Veteran Tutorial
, focusing on more advanced tasks that happen in every match. Competing it will award you a starter chest, which has a guaranteed Hero and a 7-day Stimpack, which increases XP and gold gains.
Each week different heroes are available to play for free. For June 12th-19th the following Warcraft heroes are free to play:
Malfurion
,
Gazlowe
,
Thrall
,
Lunara
,
Falstad
,
Rehgar
,
Garrosh
and
Varian
.
You can easily identify Heroes that are free to play by the Nexus icon on their portraits.
There are also weekly sales on heroes and skins. A great deal right now is the
Foundation Bundle
, which has 8 very diverse Heroes for only $19.99, and 3 of them are Warcraft Heroes:
E.T.C.
,
Greymane
and
Uther
.
You can buy heroes for money or via Battle.net balance. You can also buy Heroes with gold, a currency awarded for completing matches.
They range from 2,000 gold or $3.99 to 15,000 gold or $12.99
However, between the free hero you get AND the rotation you should not feel pressured to buy a hero.
You can also purchase skins, which are pricier as they get more elaborate, but they do not affect your character's skill or power. Skins are merely cosmetic changes to characters.
How long do games take?
Games usually take around 15 to 30 minutes, ending faster than other MOBAs. You should be able to complete these games in the tutorial AI mode as well, which can go even faster.
How do I queue with a friend?
To queue with a friend, make sure both you and your friend/s are on each other Battle.Net Friend's lists. Then simply log into the game, click on your Social tab on the bottom right-hand corner of your screen (or hit "O") and it will pull up your Friend List. From your Friend List, you can then click on the little icon on the right side of the friend you would like to invite. Once you have your friend/s invited into a party, you can then select on the top of the screen "Play".
From here you can choose what game mode you'll be playing.
Versus A.I.
(play against a team of A.I, enemies recommended for brand new players to Heroes of the Storm or MOBA games in general)
Quick Match
(select a character and get to rumble! recommended for those who are used to Mobas or want to go out against other players)
Unranked
(allows players to construct teams according to enemy picks)
Ranked
(test your mettle in competitive move against other players)
Brawl
(funky game modes that change weekly!)
Custom Games
(custom build your own settings to play with friends)
If you are brand new to MOBAs and heroes, it is recommended to at least try the tutorial OR play with a friend that knows a little bit and can help explain a long the way! For your very first game, it's probably best just to have a warm-up game against the A.I. Versus mode just to get more familiar with the controls. A.I. games do count towards the mount so no time is wasted.
What is a MOBA?
The definition of a MOBA is: Multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA), also known as action real-time strategy (ARTS), is a genre of strategy video games that originated as a subgenre of real-time strategy, in which a player controls a single character in one of two teams.
Essentially using teamwork and strategy in order to complete an objective which usually the control or destruction of the opposing teams base.
In Heroes of the Storm, there are many different maps which each have different objectives, but all leading to the destruction of the enemy teams "Core".
How do I look like less of a noob?
There are quite a few things you can do to learn the basics of the game even before you enter the Nexus. Here I will teach you a few steps to take to get you started if you are venturing into Heroes of the Storm as a first-time player and even a first time MOBA player.
If you're unsure what kind of heroes you prefer best, like a tank, an assassin or etc., it's highly recommended to play either Versus A.I. or Training mode first, to find what you feel is best suited for you. Usually, what most players like to do is to pick 1 hero in each category, so they can be versatile, and stick with that Hero until you feel comfortable enough to move onto another hero.
Once you have decided on a hero, you should learn a bit about builds. Builds work much similar to talents in World of Warcraft, which are traits you pick to help with the strength of your Hero.
To learn more about builds, you can go to our sister site,
HOTS Logs
! Your one-stop shop for builds and strategy, HOTS Logs is looking better than ever heading into the release of Yrel, Light of Hope.
With HOTS Logs, you’re able to preview everything from statistical talent breakdowns to matchups and wins by Battleground. The first and most important feature to familiarize yourself with is the Popular Talent Builds. Viewable as either a table or a carousel, the Popular Talent Builds give you a glimpse into which Talents are being chosen together most frequently and to what degree of success. If there’s a talent you’re itching to try, check out the Builds to see if it aligns with any other popular Talents to maximize Yrel’s potential or any other hero you might find okay for your playstyle. Is Divine Steed as useful a cooldown in HotS as it is in WoW? This is your way to find out.
While Yrel has a strong teamfight presence, Yrel isn’t ideal on every map or with every Hero. Synergy is important, but fear not– HOTS Logs has you covered. By going to the “Matchups” tab, you can see which Heroes Yrel might perform strongly against. Alternatively, the “Duos” tab gives you a glimpse into which heroes have worked well with Yrel within the Nexus. Lastly, the “Wins by Map” tab will show you Yrel’s percentage win chance on every Battleground in the game including Alterac Pass upon release. This is also applicable to all heroes!
Gain early insight into Yrel’s strengths, weaknesses, and quirks with an analytical approach using HOTS Logs. Through the community’s joint efforts and replay uploads, HOTS Logs will be live with Yrel shortly after her release into the Nexus.
