Consercration is the only Paladin Area of Effect spell, other than some strictly undead only ones. This helps with, in PVP, keeping those nasty rogues from ambushing you!

This spell will be used later on in instances. WIth bosses like gluth and vankriss I beleive it is in aq40. The paladins kite mobs along with righteous fury.

From my experience from being a Holy Paladin, this isn't really worth it. It does do aoe damage but it is only good when your level 60 and you are running your friend threw VC, WC, SFK, Stocks, ect to take down the low levels easily. It is now replaced because of the last patch.

Since this spell as of Patch 2.0.1 is trainable at level 20 and no longer requires a taent point it should be obtained and used by all paladins. Its the only AoE(Area of Effect) spell that damages all types of enemies not just undead. It also along with righteous defense is a great tanking ability when paired with righteous fury.
In PvP it doesnt fare so well the spell does a very weak amount of damage to your enemies at a high mana cost. Not even in close encounters with multiple members of the opposite faction is using this talent recomended by most paladins.
In PvE this is a great Tanking talent when combined with Righteous fury. However it is an extreme mana burner and most Tankadins prefer righteous defense as of patch 2.0.1 as their prefered tanking talent over Consecration/Righteous Fury.

Unlike some other aoe spells, this spell doesnt get you into pvp if a flagged person is nearby. So just spam away if you wish to.

So...what is the point of even using this ability anymore if it still does the same amount of marginal damage/threat, costs a chunk of mana, and has a 30 seconds cooldown?

Nerfing this didn't hurt tanking at all. It's very possible to hold AoE aggro
without
using this - I regularly go through entire dungeons without consecrating, and the only times I've ever had threat issues is when
RF
isn't on. 4.0 brings a big change for Prot pallies - learn your new "rotation" and you should be fine.

After Patch 4.0.1 went live I decided to tank a couple heroics to get a feel for the new mechanics (in full ilvl 264 gear and T10 2pc bonus). After failing miserably on AOE threat and having to spam
Righeous Defense
as a core part of my new rotation just to keep agro off of everyone else in my group (who were all in much lower level gear), I logged out of the game and cursed Blizzard as I cried myself to sleep in the fetal position...
Then the next day I thought..., maybe, just MAYBE I'm missing something very basic here. Turns out, I was (it pays to do a little research/practice). Here are some CRITICALLY IMPORTANT, yet easy to miss changes that you may not have caught yet which will play in to the new Consecration/AOE threat (read the tooltips closely as i explain the significance):

Holy Wrath
: This spell has undergone changes that are just as extreme as Consecration. Before the patch it had a 30 second cooldown (glyphed down to 15 seconds) and only affected undead targets. Now it natively has a 15 second cooldown, and affects
ALL TARGETS
(yes, any target in the game) and can be glyphed to stun/interrupt elementals and dragonkin in addition to undead and demons. Simply put, this alone nearly fills the AOE threat gap for Consecration and should be used on cooldown during every single trash mob you tank.

: Avenger's Shield has now been buffed tremendously. Before the patch, it was on a 30 second cooldown and costed a ton of mana which made it only practical as a pulling tool or "oh crap, get over here!" crowd controller. Now it costs almost no mana at all, does more damage, and has only a 15 second cooldown (currently via talents; baseline in cataclysm) with a 20% chance to be
INSTANTLY RESET
each time you use Hammer of the Righteous or Crusader Strike. This means that if you open up with Avenger's Shield, followed by HOTR, it is possible to launch two Avenger's Shields within less than 5 seconds! Grand Crusader also has no internal cooldown, so with all the HOTR and Crusader Strikes you will be casting, this will generally proc multiple times in every fight. Add in the fact that it automatically silences (and dazes if glyphed) any mob it touches, and it becomes a core part of your rotation that can and should be used on cooldown every chance you get.

Hallowed Ground
: This has probably undergone the most extreme change out of all tankadin abilities. Before the patch, Consecration lasted 8 seconds and had an 8 second cooldown, which meant that it was part of our core rotation with 100% uptime. It costed a ton of mana, but our
Divine Plea
(also nerfed hard) had 100% uptime, so it wasn't a problem. Now it does the same amount of damage with a whopping 30 SECOND COOLDOWN and no more constant Divine Plea (and all Tankadins said in unison, WTH BLIZZ!). However, the new Hallowed Ground talent makes this spell dirt cheap manawise and increases it's potency. Instead of having 100% uptime, it lasts only 33% as long, but does 40% more damage. If used as an opener on each trash mob this makes it much easier to gain initial crowd control due to it's high levels of threat generation through
Righteous Fury
. When used in conjunction with the huge buffs to Holy Wrath and Avenger's Shield your mobs will stick to you like glue even through the most powerful mage's blizzard or druid's hurricane.
I hope these tidbits have helped clear the air on what Blizzard was trying to do in this patch. I urge everyone to play around with these talents and abilities, and I assure you, you WILL be able to find a spec/rotation that is just as much if not MORE powerful than what you had before the patch.

no one complains about rain of fire or blizzard or even volley. y? prolly cause they can be improved with talents. newsflash: all of them r channeled. that means the caster must stay there with a big KILL ME mark on his head
consecration is instant cast and only a little less powerfull than those. also it's a lot easier to get the full effect, thus enhancing mana efficiency
and 2 the guy with a very !ey name: 8DPS unmitigated is pretty good. hunters spend 31talent points to get 7DPS added to their and their party's at lvl60. it's not a fair comparison, but a way to realize the potential consecration has, especially 4 tanking

Last time I used Consecration, as long as your target(s) were within range once it hit, the damage was "locked" on them. Meaning once they the leave the area of the spell, they still take the DoT. As I said however, this may have been nerfed as well since multiple patches and updates have been released since I last used my pali. Can anyone else confirm or deny?

think about having a pally tank in strat ud. the 1st pulls are all aoe'd down..to help keep agroo the pally good spam this to help :)

1. Unstealth rogues and druids.
When u cast, it instanly deals the dmg to them, so auto unstealth.
2. Keeping aggro in instances. I always have righteous fury up in instances when im tank. Doing this gives me even more aggro, keeping the mobs off of the casters.
3. AoE grinding undead
I AoE grinded from 50-60. This with holy wrath and some bombs. Fast lvling.
4. It looks cool.

The dmg also increases with Judgement of the Crusader. It increases all holy dmg done, so consecration, SoR, SoC, ret aura, exorcism, holy wrath, etc will do more dmg. At rank 1, with improved SotC judged, this will do about 20 dps. at lvl 20, that is relativly good. 160 dmg over 8 secs.

This might be obvious to anyone who understands game mechanics but I found this out a little while ago and thought it would be helpful to throw on up here.
Given that consecrate is basically an AoE DoT, it gets full effect from spell on damage on any rank. I was aware that this worked for other DoT's (eg. Shadow Word: Pain), but didn't really think about it when considering consecrate - turns out it works the same.
What does that mean to you? If you're going for a holy +spell damage build, you've got a fairly nice DoT on your hands once you get some +spell damage.
Eg. 0 spell damage, rank 1 consecrate does 64 damage for 120 mana untalented.
400 spell damage, rank 1 consecrate does 464 damage for 120 mana untalented.
Couple this with the above mentioned pvp uses, and consecrate has quickly become my favourite spell. It also looks cool as hell, hehe.

if your a rogue and want to get into this a lil trick i use to get to the pala or w.e is inside the AOE is count the seconds,it ticks every 3 seconds so when it ticks ump in and get em :) if u jump in sometimes u miss a tick doesnt always work tho..

Well, this spell seems to be a letdown.. 11 Damage per 3 seconds. as a Paladin twink in training (( 20-29 Bracket )) I was thinking about putting +30 Spell Damage on my
Zealot Blade
This could increase the damage caused by many other Spell effect's for Paladins. But im not sure about This one. Any comments?

most people of you are thinnking of pvp or taking one person on at a time... to get the REAL full affect of this round up 10-20 people then use it whats the dps then? while lets see if its 20 people 64X20=1280/8=160dps so there ya go... solo instences with it and round up bunches of people.

As of the most recent patch this spell no longer puts a debuff on targets within the AoE range. They continue to take damage ONLY if they are still in the area around the paladin.

You need to get level one by enabling it in your talent tree (under Holy). Once you've put a talent point on it you get your first level.

does this spell do damage in the area you cast it or does it act like an aura and follow you around?

You recieve consecration rank 1 from the holy section of the talent point window.
To be more specific it is 2 talents down from divine strength.

im a 34 pally and have trained for every spell offered by the trainers. now i see im eligible for consecration rank 2. however i dont have, nor was i ever offered, rank 1 by any trainers. i cant get rank 2 w/out rank 1. was this offered in a quest i missed or something like that. please help.

Does anyone else remember this being a level 30 Retribution talent before they moved it to level 20 Holy or am I crazy? I swear I was excited to hit level 30 ret just to use this fabled consecration ability only for it to become a holy talent the next week.
