This is your "OH SHI---" cooldown for when you're tanking and you eat a string of unlucky critical/crushing blows and know that your heals aren't coming fast enough, or that you're about to eat something too big to swallow.
In general, this is used when you're taking more damage than your healers anticipated, and you need to give them a window to catch up. Combined with Last Stand, this can be a lifesaver.

Its not a dumb spec at all. I have all my OTs spec that way. They DPS good and can pick up a boss after a MT goes down on a bad enrage gives healers over 20 seconds of easy healing and gives our dps time to nuke the boss down.

wouldn't it be great if tactical mastery gave an aggro bonus to one of the prot talent skills like SS or Devastate. i mean why the hell hasn't bliz made that be from day one. and why would sb use bloodthirst or MS in defensive stance, or what prot warrior has even has them, the only way TM second part is any good is for off-tanking

Another awesome use for Shield Wall is during fights with heavy splash damage. Should the healers be incapable of getting the raid topped off quickly enough, having the main tank (if it's a warrior) pop Shield Wall gives your healers that extra time to focus on the raid.
Granted, there's no excuse to ignore the tank even while Shield Wall is up.

The new glyph of shield wall reduces the cooldown of this ability by 3 minutes.. This means warriors can use this for almost all fights without thinking twice about using it later..
The only bad thing is the damage taken reduction by 40% instead of the original 60%.
With the new glyph, shield wall got much better compared to the paladin's divine protection which was essentially the same. This gives more reasons why warriors will be MT :(

for raids that are progressive using this talented and glyphed reduces the cd to 2minutes, granted you only have 40%, but the fact that you can pop this up 2.5 times more gives you more time to figure out what is going wrong before the next wipe

A rather pointless but interesting note here. Shield Wall can reduce the damage from swimming in -lava- of all things. Something humorous about seeing a warrior consciously blocking some of the damage from being submerged in magma.

If a pally does divine shield, and you do Shield wall, would he be doing 35% of damage?
Listen up...
Defensive stance adds
10% reduction
Shield wall adds another
60% reduction
Adds up to
70% overall damage reduction.
Then Bubble makes
all damage caused reduced by 50%
Pally's reduced damage is at 50%, and warrior's received damage is cut by 70% would mean 70% of 50% damage?
.50*.70=.35?
35% of pallies damage makes it threw Sheild wall?

Shield Wall has base cooldown of 5 mins.
Shield mastery reduces its cooldown by 3 mins.
Glyph of Shield wall INCREASES its cooldown by 2 mins.
To sum it up, this can have a 60% reduction for 12 secs once per 4 mins.

The glyph should only increase the timer by 1 min not 2. Your major oh !@#$ buttons should be on a 3 minute cooldown. Your secondary oh $%^& buttons should be on a 2 minute cooldown. Your minor effects should be on a 1 minute cooldown. That kind of layering allows for interesting gameplay options.

Ok, so does the glyph actually increase the damage reduction by 20%? The wording is confusing and it sounds as though for an extra 2 minutes of CD, your shield wall will now only reduce damage by 20% instead of 40%! Here's to me hoping the wording is just bad :P

Now in cataclysm this spell is 40% damage less, using the Tank build Shield Mastery you bring it down to 2 minutes
I believe 2 minutes make this spell great to make the 5 man dungeon faster. You can always pop Shield Wall because 2 minutes CD is really fast and charge a room with normally would need lots of little pulls, plus use it alot and you will never see the healer say "Mana Time" again. Use and Abuse it.
This, of course is only for 5 man Dungeons.

I think that 40% damage reduction is great also for raids,
with 2 mins CD it can be used (often) twice in a boss fight, while a 4 mins CD only once.
It depends also which boss you'r fighting... some boss (like Festergut) needs olny a great CD once
imho i prefer 2 mins CD and 40% reduction ... with
T11 4P bonus

So I noticed a nice perk of playing Fury in PvP. Normally in PvP when a warrior has to go defensive, he sacrifices damage because you need to keep your shield on in order to shield wall. However, this is not the case if you use a basic
/equipslot 17 Offhand
macro. You can pop on your shield, activate shield wall, then swap right back to your offhanded weapon and keep the buff! A wonderful trick for not falling into a vicious cycle of getting outpressured.

Nothing in this game besides some talents are additive..they are all multiplicative.
so if you are in defensive stance which reduces dmg by 10% and then shield wall which reduces damage by 40% for example..it is not 50% damage reduction but rather 46% damage reduction.

Unlike Recklessness and Retaliation where you have to be close, this is great against Mages, Hunters, Druids and Priests, who sometimes you can't reach. Shield Wall allows you to drop most of the damage you take from physical hits and spells.
This is the best defense against being kited (+ Intercept.)

It's what you use when your healer(s) is (are) nearly out of mana and the mob is at like 20% (preferably some key encounter in the instance, ie the end boss).
It has a 30 minute cooldown which is also linked with Retaliation and Recklessness. HF owning casters twice each hour. ^^

In BC, u can upgrade this talent to become completely imba. If u put talent points in both improved shield wall (protection tree) and in improved disciplines (arms tree) u can make this ability last for 21 secs and have a 20 min CD...
That's pretty nice, considering u can both get Concussion Blow and Mortal Strike as well...

I'm a level 60 Warrior and in WSG I'll always get the flag when the CD on the 3 wondefull skills are ready.
When I got the flag I'll change to 1H + Shield and defensive stance (just less damage gained) ^_^
Most of the runs to your own base will be filled with 5-10 Enemies chasing you, so I'll just use a 16 sec Shield Wall (talents) and won't die. And in before you know it... I"m in our own base and getting overhealed, muhahaha! Point Our Team ! =D

You can actually get a 21 second shield wall but it requires specing in a very weird way (half arms, half prot) and is not worth it for an ability that can only be used once every 20 minutes (talented).

Not sure of the exact viability of this, but I can give some examples of what I have seen it do and possible uses of it.
First and most importantly, the ten second duration makes it a tricky timing dance. Should I use it at the beginning of a hard fight and wait for the mob to get situated in a room, let any adds be pulled off of me while I keep the named, or wait till the heal chains get situated and I don't die in the first few seconds and cause a wipe... Or maybe I should use it at the end when a monster has a possible amount of adds that spring up in the end or perhaps it goes beserk or some other nasty trick.
It is not certain when it should be used, but the dramatic power of it is very obvious. When I was lvl 49, using Defensive and Shield of course so I can use the ability, and having about 4600ac or so, I attacked that wandering dragon in Blasted Lands, something the Devourer I believe. I attempted this twice, once the first fight with nothing but a druid buff on and not using Shield Wall, but using my shield, not dual or 2h, I took straight hits, non critical, for 900s, 700s, 600s, an AE fire breath of 550s or so, and one crit for 1200 and then dead.
Trying again, with same buff on, I took hits of 200s, one crit of 300s, 100s, and never got hit by a fire blast before it wore off, but I think it would have been reduced just the same. As soon as the wall fell, damage went back to 800 and up and I died fast. So even fighting a skull, Boss designated dragon, shield wall had insane impact, all be that a short duration of such an impact.
So, there is some info about this spell, what I have observed thus far, and would like to see any other opionions and possible uses of this mentioned, some strats, whatever.
