The Voidwalker is best used for soloing situations as a tank. He has high armor, health, and only does moderate damage. With further points into the demonology tree, such as Improved Voidwalker, pulling aggro from him will be difficult (unless you have a lot of epics).
The voidwalker can learn 4 abilities:
- Torment: Taunts a target to try to get it to attack the Voidwalker
- Suffering: Taunts all mobs within 10 yards to attack the Voidwalker
- Consume Shadows: Consumes nearby shadows to regain health. This helps decrease downtime
- Sacrifice: Sacrifice the Voidwalker so that you gain a shield which protects you from all attacks for a few seconds. This helps when you see that you're in a sticky situation and need to run.

The Voidwalker is actually the most feasible pet for the style of play known as "Drain Tanking" This is mainly a soloing style so its not very useful in groups or PvP. However, it makes up for this by being one of the best and fastest styles for grinding. Here's how it works: Send in your VW against a mob and let him get in a few hits. DOT the target with Corruption (helps if you have Improved Corruption from the Affliction tree) and Curse of Agony. The VW should still have aggro. At this point use Life Tap to replenish your mana. Afterwards, use Drain Life on the mob to get back your health. Once you see that the mob is at about 50% health cast Immolate. It may also be necessary to re-cast Corruption to keep damaging the mob. Use Life Tap and hit the mob with another Drain Life. It sounds complicated but its very simple once you get it down and you can come out of the battle with only moderate losses in health and mana. This cuts down on time spent eating and drinking. Use Consume Shadows on the VW to replenish his health and move on to the next target.

It should be noted that with the XPack, the Voidwalker gets a few skills upgrated.
First of all, since the 2.0.1 patch his threat-generation has been _substially_ improved, he easily outtanks the far more dps-producing Felguard, without being as fragile as the latter is.
Second:
Suffering now also reduces the hitchance of all affected targets by 10% for 15 seconds.
Consume Shadows increases the Voidwalker's ATK by 200 for 20 minutes - any data on stackability?
Both of these new side-effects only exist on the 61+ levels of the pet-skills.

Little trick for arena, you summon a voidwalker at the beginning, and with 15 seconds left, sac it and summon the pet of your choice for a nice 15ish seconds on the shield, you want every advantage you can get in arena.

Succubus sucks? o_O Did you never buy seduce or something? o_O
in PvP:
seduce the guy, throw some big ass spells at his ass, cast fear, throw some big ass spells at his ass, seduce him ... keep doing this till he's dead... =P ok, so I made it sound a little too easy XD but that's the main aproach!
VW is best for solo-ing enemies that are the same or higher lvl than you... if you have enemies that are a lvl lower, you can send in a succy + dot's on 1 and dot's + yourself on the other... I would never choose VW to do that sort of stuff... much to slow =)
Haven't used imp's for a long time o_O only when my soul shards are all out... which hardly ever happens with my new soul bag (<3 TonTon XD)
And I haven't gotten the Felhound yet... but they're awesome for pvp against magic users XD at least =P So I have seen and heard XD
Each minion is good for another kind of situation, this is what makes Warlock the most fun class to play with, IMHO! XD

Claiming VW is "Slow grinding" or "sucks" is bull!@#$, its like saying "Why should we have a tank in instances? Mages got LOADS more dps! AND they buff us!1". its a %^&*load of crap.... VW is a really nice pet.
PS I soload a shaman with VW only, think he was AFK though...

if you wanna do this turn off the hing that makes succubus automatically soothing kiss or whatever is the move she does that lowers aggro and only use it when she is low on health

I use vw all the time.
Most of the time i send his ass in first then after the first torment I start up my line of dots.
after my dots and immo is done i start with shadowbolt after the second or third shadowb the agro get's to me and i finish it off with shadowburn.
and if there are more then 1 simply let the tank handle it with suffering just 1 by 1 I finish them off.
If i wanna play recless I put the vw on 1 target then dot him 1 shadowbolt and walk the vw to the next target, while i finish off the first he will have 1 or 2 torments on it and then i will be done with the first one and attack the second one that already has 1 or 2 torments on him.
and after the dopts it is on to the next creep.
you can keep this up for 7 or 8 creeps before you are 100% out of mana and life to lifetap and the vw will be at 10% or lower also regen regen regen and go on again.
I love vw I use it almost always.
btw it is a really good tank vs elite creeps just w8 till the vw is at 75% hp then start the dots and shadowbolts and the creep is dead before you know it without ever attacking you.
Also You can do a lot more dps if you get the time to cast witch is possible if your vw holds the agro with imp you always get the creeps to agro you and itterupt you.

Yeah....
An imp tank....
They would last about 5 hits then die. Succs are ok for dmg, but they dont hold aggro well, and dont have enough health either.

While I do not deny that in the lower to middle levels the vw was by FAR the best demon for solo'ing, the highre level mobs are a little smarter than the lower ones and after they lose about 30-40% of their health, they start after me. I found that after level 48 or so (give or take) the VW loses some of his effectiveness, not much, but enough to make a destruction spec'd Lock such as myslef go back to my imp, even for solo'ing. Through talents you can drop your imp's firebolt time to 1 sec and with my gear giving around "up to" +100 spells and effects, my imp does between 90 and 110 damage per fireball, which is 1 second cast time, which equals out to pretty darn close to 80 or so dps when you figure in lag time from end of one firebolt to beginning of next. I can knock down mobs 2 or 3 levels highrer than me very quickly and go through about 4 or 5 before I even have to lifetap. Just my opinion and playstyle. Everyone plays differently. :)

this maybe a stupid question but do void walkers have talents you can buy like imps do example blood pact.

You get a soulshard by casting drain soul when the target is about to die, but he has to die while you are doing it.

The quest to get a Voidwalker in Stormwind is called "Surena's Choker" from Gakin at the Slaughtered Lamb in Mages Quarters.

Per usual, the quest line begins with an NPC Warlock near the trainers in one of each faction's major cities. When you reach level 10 as a Warlock, go to any Warlock training area for your faction (other than the level 1-6 starting areas) and there will be a quest for you, either starting you on the quest or directing you to the right person to talk to.
For the Horde, Ophek in Razor Hill will send you to Gan'rul Bloodeye in Orgrimmar, and Ageron Kargal in Brill will send you to Carendin Halgar in The Undercity.
Alliance Warlocks will be directed to Gakin the Darkbinder in Stormwind, either by Remen Marcot of Goldshire or Lago Blackwrench of Ironforge (to whom you may be directed by the Gnome Warlock trainers of Kharanos).
In either case, the questgiver will send you to retrieve a quest item from someone nearby, who will not part with it willingly, and when you return with it, the ritual begins. A trainer will then tell you to summon a Voidwalker somewhere nearby. You must defeat it to earn the power to summon one yourself again in the future. Others can assist, of course.
For the Blood Elf quest, you are told to retrieve a red glowing stone; this is incorrect. The stones are actually the same blue as the Voidwalker.

Voidwalker Tip
The Voidwalker is a great tank pet; he takes massive amounts of damage, has great armor, holds massive amounts of enemy aggression (which is nice because it's not on you!) and heals himself quickly after every fight. If you intend to fight multiple enemies simultaneously, the Voidwalker is your best choice. If you spend a few talent points in Improved Voidwalker, he can keep the attention of even the highest level enemies. His Sacrifice is great when being ambushed by another player or mob, giving you a shield that can absorb thousands of points of damage at a moment's notice.
Sadly, the Voidwalker does the least melee damage of any of the regular 4 Warlock pets. Don't rely on it to kill the target with melee damage. Instead, put your DoTs on the mob, and maybe use some direct-damage spells as well, such as Immolate or Shadow Bolt, but be sparing so you don't draw the aggro to yourself. The whole point of a Voidwalker is to absorb the mob's attention and damage so you're free to let your spells work, watch for adds, use Life Tap, bandage yourself, etc. See the strategy section of Curse of Agony for tips on how to effectively combine usage of DOTs with the Voidwalker.
Besides increasing its threat generation powers, the Improved Voidwalker talent also amplifies the self-healing effect of Consume Shadows and the damage absorption of Sacrifice.
If you're going to be facing just one mob at a time, turn off the auto-cast on Suffering. There's no sense wasting mana doing an area-of-effect taunt when you're using a single-target one too. An exception to this would be at high levels when Torment just isn't keeping the aggro off you, but even then, Suffering doesn't help much if that's the case.
Torment and Suffering have absolutely no use in PvP combat. If you know in advance that you're going to be engaging in PvP and are still determined to have the Voidwalker around for some reason, turn off auto-cast on these abilities so you'll at least have plenty of mana for Consume Shadows.
Because of its high health and Consume Shadows ability, the Voidwalker is likely to have a lot of health at any given time, making it the best pet to have around if you're going to use Soul Link, especially if you also have Fel Stamina. However, because of its low mana and high mana usage, this is a terrible pet to have around if you're going to use Dark Pact.
The Voidwalker's benefits under the Demonic Sacrifice and Master Demonologist talents (rapid health regeneration and damage reduction, respectively) can add to a Warlock's survival chances in many situations.

I hate these noobs that complain that their VW doesn't hold agro when they use searing pain etc...especially searing pain. If you have a VW out you have no need for searing pain. Use moves that have lower threat like corruption and curse of agony. By this time your VW should have 1 to 2 torments depending whether you have instant corruption or not. Now it's time to use immolate and shadowbolts. Save them for later in the battle. Life drain, curse of agony, and corruption should be the first things you use. Searing pain should be used to keep agro off your squishy pets imp, succ, etc. Or potentially as a quick cast finishing move. Don't even use it when you have your VW out. Enough said...

This information is based on my personal experiences near the end of the September 2004 Stress Test Beta (9/9/04). I assume some of this will change come launch:
-----
Link Removed by Staff
This spell is only received through a Quest. For Humans, that quest will start in Goldshire, south of Stormwind, once a player has reached their 10th level (though I imagine the quest steps are the same for Gnome, Undead, and Orc). When you visit the Warlock Trainer in the basement of the Inn, you will find an NPC there who will send you to Gakin, in the basement of the Slaughtered Lamb, itself in the Mage District of Stormwind.
Gakin sends you out to the Brackwell Pumpkin Patch (
#9 on this map
) to slay
Surena Caledon
and retrieve a choker the girl stole from Gakin. She's level 10 Mage it looks like, and generally spawns with two level 9 or 10 melee henchmen. Not soloable at 10, particularly because the patch itself spawns beasts and the woods surrounding are invested with all manner of death dealing.
Once the choker is retrieved, return to Gakin in Stormwind.
The next step of the quest is to Summon a Voidwalker, using the choker Gakin lends you (nice of him, given the work he made ya do for it) down in the Summoning Circle at the very bottom of the Slaughtered Lamb. The goal is to subdue (kill) it once you summon it.
As with all Warlock pets, this one summons at your level, so have your Imp out and ready. The Voidwalker won't automatically attack, nor can the Imp initiate attack. So you do it :) Then the Imp can join in and it's just Shadowbolts from there.
Here's two things to note:
1) Once you complete the quest, you won't be able to Summon a Voidwalker right away. First you need one of
these Soul Shards
.
These
only come from using the
Drain Soul
spell on a mob. Visit the link for more details.
2) Voidwalkers are trained at the Demon Trainer (not the Imp one), and the closest one is two NPCs away from Gakin. Don't bother trying to train right away though. The first power a Voidwalker can learn is at level 16.
The thing about Voidwalkers is that they are archetypical Tanks. They can absorb damage great, but can't dish it out too well. Later on they get a few ranks of Taunt, and at 16 they can be dismissed by the Warlock to make the Warlock invincible for 10 seconds. Otherwise, they are there to keep the mob busy while you stand back and use your veritable Swiss Army Knife of options upon the mob.

The key to the correct summoning circle is that it's downstairs from the NPC and it has a neon hot pink symbol in the middle.
Good luck!

I solo'd her today as a lvl 11 warlock. trick is you have to kill the named one at a time. so sick your pet on the weakest one, and nuke for all your worth. When it's dead run away. good to have a healthstone at this point. after they lose agro, go bach and repeat until they're all dead. btw make sure you clear all the roamers before attemping this

Did this quest at level 10, received it in IF outside the warlock training room, he sent me to mage district in SW, there I received the killing quest.
Here's how I did;
DoT Erlan with Immolate, CoA and Corruption, then quickly fear Morgan (make sure to clear the mobs around the house first), DoT Surena and send pet on her.
Finish off Erlan, then Surena and last fear Morgan again and DoT him and keep distance and kite him if needed.
made it in first attempt, interesting fight but easy.

I created a human warlock and at lvl 12 or so I went and did the quest to kill Surena Caledon and then went to WF and spoke with the trainer and got my mission to use the summoning circle to call a voidwalker and kill it. I tried for about 15 minutes using all 4 of the different summoning circles below the warlock trainers in the Slaughtered Lamb, but each time I tried I received an error message, "You must use a summoning circle to call.." Do I need something else in my inventory or to go to a different summoning circle to call the VW?

Easy way to solo her:
Stand outside the cottage, target her, sic you imp on her (ctrl+1), then straight away hit her with curse of agony and corruption, then run away. you should still be able to survive, and when you go back, her corpse should be waiting for you.
