i assume this was so to bring the critical damage of fire spells up to par with frost spells - frost spells have a total of 100% extra damage when they crit (if you're specced for it), so ignite enables fire spells to have 50%+40%=90% extra crit damage (the 10% diff is evened out due to the fact that fireballs have their own dots as well as lightly more damage than frostbolts), and the threat of this 40% of the total dmg is also spread over 4 secs, meaning overall it produces slightly less threat over a period of time than critical frost spells

what if I crit 4k with a fireball, then fireblast crits 2k... does ignite stack? Or does it renew (like after the fireball ignite disappears, fireblast ignites pops up)?

Ignite does not stack. A new crit will replace an exisiting ignite, with the new ignite, even if it does less damage. For example, You crit for 3k with fireball, and the target receives Ignite. A second later, your fireblast crits for 1k, and it replaces the existing Ignite, with the new and less powerfull Ignite, I hope this helped =)

In comparing betwen Arcane/Fire and Arcane/Frost, it appears that ignite scales much better than ice shards. Fire crits are going to be 280% damage ((1.5+0.5)*1.4) whereas frost crits will be 250%.

yeah i get 6k PB crits and 2k ignite
this ability used to be awsome for Scorch Mages when it used to stack to 5 i hate blizzard for nerfing this spell,

Actually there is a way I am finding to "float" the ignite. Ignite ticks twice after a crit, if a second spell crits rather than 2 separate ignites ticking the single ignite will then tick for both. The Important part is if the ignite has already ticked once and you crit again the ignite is refreshed, and at the new #
For simple math lets say that an ignite will tick for 100.
Fireball crits, wait for one tick, fireblast crit.
In this scenario the ignites should tick like this
100, 200, 100.
However, they do not tick this way. They tick like this
100, 200, 200.
Scenario 2
Fireball crit, wait, fireblast crit, wait,scorch or pom crit
the ticks should then be as follows
100, 200, 300, 300
I Have tested the first part to be true, and if this can be extended to it's logical conclusion that means that properly timed crit "combos" will continue to make the initial (and subsequent) ignites keep ticking as many times as you can crit and reset the ignite.

what % (if any) of +spelldmg does this receive? technically it should get all of it because of its 4 second duration, but I doubt it does. anyone know?
